My father is a man who works hard with his hands and never complains. He is a simple man with little education. He always teaches me in his own way.
One day before I was leaving for college, he sat me down, took out a pencil with an eraser from his pocket and told me four things that I would never forget. They are as follows.
“My son, there are four things you need to know before you go into the world. First, look at this pencil. We know that in order to become a useful pencil, it will have to be sharpened (削) from time to time. If it could feel, we could imagine how painful that would be, but that’s what it takes to be a useful pencil. Life is much the same. Painful experiences and challenges come to us all. Second, the eraser can correct the mistakes you make, so don’t be afraid of making mistakes. If you learn from your mistakes, they’re not mistakes but lessons you can use. Third, just like this pencil, every place where you’re used, you leave your mark. You’re writing your own story, so no matter what difficulties you meet, never stop writing. Fourth, always remember the most valuable part of a pencil is what’s inside, so who you are is more important than what you look like.”
My father’s words have a great influence on me. Every time I am in trouble and don’t know what to do, I will think of his pencil and will find the right way in the end.
1. What did the father use to teach his son a lesson?
A. A story from a book. B. A pencil with an eraser.
C. His own life experiences. D. A letter written for his son.
2. According to the father, what should you do when you make a mistake?
A. Hide it from others. B. Be afraid and avoid trying.
C. Use an eraser to correct it and learn from it. D. Forget about it and move on quickly.
3. What does sharpening a pencil from time to time stand for?
A. The mistakes you have made in life. B. The painful experiences and challenges in life.
C. The lessons you need to learn before entering the world. D. The love from your father in life.
4. How can the writer turn the mistakes into lessons?
A. By learning from the mistakes. B. By sharing the mistakes with his father.
C. By writing them down on a notebook. D. By writing some stories about them.
5. If the writer feels bored and wants to stop working, which thing may cheer him up?
A. The first one. B. The second one. C. The third one. D. The fourth one.
6. How does the writer feel about his father's advice?
A. He finds it simple but not very useful in real life.
B. He feels it is helpful when he faces difficulties.
C. He thinks it is more about schoolwork than about life.
D. He believes it is only suitable for young children.

解析:
1. B 细节题。文章第二段明确提到父亲"took out a pencil with an eraser from his pocket"(从口袋里拿出一支带橡皮的铅笔)。

As e-sports grow in popularity, more people consider playing video games to be a sport. More than100 colleges in the United States now have e-sports teams. Many of those school provide scholarships(奖学金), just as they do for ___1___ athletes(运动员). The organizers of the Olympics are even considering adding e-sports competitions in the future.
Still, many people say e-sports don't belong in the same category(类别) as traditional sports.
Here's what two of our readers think.
1.Yes!
Just like football or soccer, e-sports are all about competition. They require skill and concentration. The best players are so talented. They're like the LeBron James of video games. Serious gamers spend many hours ____2___their skills. Some professional gaming teams practice for up to 50 hours a week. Some people say playing video games doesn't need physical activity. But that's not always ___3__When I play Wii sports, I move around and sometimes even ___4__.
2.No!
A sport needs physical activity and skill. Playing video games takes skill. But it doesn't require enough ____5___ to make it a sport. In fact, people often sit for hours while playing video games.
Actual sports, like basketball, help kids get exercise.
Just because there are a lot of e-sports competitions doesn’t make playing video games a sport.
People compete in spelling bees where winners get prizes. Yet that's not a sport. And ___6_ _is playing video games.

Answer the questions:(回答问题)
An old English saying says, “Laughter is the best medicine.” One person who certainly would have agreed with this is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins was the editor of a magazine called Saturday Review for almost forty years.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins discovered he had a rare disease.
In less than a week after he got back, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that the illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness.
He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching comedy shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free sleep at night.
Mr. Cousins left the hospital and he continued his experiment with laughter in a hotel. For eight days, he watched comedy shows on television, read amusing books a nd slept when he was tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to run on the beac h for exercise.
After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to health.
1. What was the matter with Norman Cousins after his trip to Europe?
2. Could the doctor cure his problem?
3. In Mr Cousins' opinion, what could cure his illness?

2. No, he couldn’t.
解析:问题询问医生能否治愈他的病。文章第四段明确提到:“The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problem and he might never get over the illness.” 这表明医生对此病无能为力,答案直接引用原文信息即可。
3. Happy thoughts or laughter could cure his illness.
解析:问题询问卡森斯认为什么能治愈他的病。文章第五段提到,他认为疾病可能由“unhappy thoughts”引起,并相信“happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness”。答案需强调他主张用积极情绪替代药物。
4.By watching comedy shows on television, reading amusing books, and focusing on positive activities.
解析:问题询问他如何让自己快乐。文章第六段和第七段描述了他的方法:在医院和酒店通过观看电视喜剧、阅读幽默书籍来引发笑声。答案需列举这些具体行为。
5. The sentence means that Mr. Cousins recovered from his illness through laughter and positive emotions, without relying on traditional medicine.
解析:该句是全文的总结性观点。需结合上下文理解其深层含义:卡森斯通过主动创造快乐(非药物治疗)逐步恢复健康。答案需点明“笑声”的直接作用及其对传统医疗的补充意义。

Still, many people say e-sports don't belong in the same category(类别) as traditional sports.
Here's what two of our readers think.
