Archimedes: A Great Mind in Ancient Greece
Archimedes was born in Syracuse, a city in ancient Greece, around 287 BC. He was a mathematician, physicist, and inventor— and one of the greatest minds in history.
One of Archimedes’ most famous stories is about the king’s crown. The king asked him to check if the crown was made of pure gold, without damaging it. Archimedes thought about the problem for a long time. One day, when he got into a bath, he saw the water rise. He realized that the volume of water displaced (排出) was equal to the volume of his body. This gave him the idea to measure the crown’s volume: he put the crown into water and checked how much water it displaced. Then he compared it with the volume of pure gold of the same weight. Finally, he found that the crown had other metals mixed in— the king was cheated!
Archimedes also made many other discoveries. He worked out the principle of lever (杠杆原理) and said, “Give me a place to stand, and I can move the earth.” He invented tools like the Archimedean screw (阿基米德螺旋泵), which is still used to move water today.
Archimedes died in 212 BC, but his ideas and discoveries still influence the world. He showed that curiosity and careful thinking can lead to amazing things.
26. What did the king ask Archimedes to do?
A. To make a new crown. B. To check if the crown was pure gold.
C. To invent a new tool. D. To teach the king math.
27. How did Archimedes measure the crown’s volume?
A. By weighing it. B. By cutting it into pieces.
C. By putting it into water. D. By comparing it with his body.
28. What do we know about the Archimedean screw?
A. It is no longer used today. B. It was used to move earth.
C. It was invented for the king. D. It is still used to move water.

Two Great Minds: Einstein and Yuan Longping
Albert Einstein and Yuan Longping are two great minds from different times and countries, but they both changed the world.
Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He was a physicist who is best known for his theory of relativity (相对论). His famous equation E=mc² is one of the most important formulas in physics. Einstein was also a man with a good sense of humour. He often joked with his friends and students. He believed that imagination was more important than knowledge— and he encouraged people to think differently.
Yuan Longping was born in China in 1930. He was an agricultural scientist (农业科学家) known as “the Father of Hybrid Rice (杂交水稻)”. Before his work, many people in China and other countries didn’t have enough food. Yuan spent his life researching hybrid rice. He worked in fields for hours every day, even when he was old. His work made hybrid rice produce much more food, helping millions of people avoid hunger.
Both Einstein and Yuan Longping were hard-working and curious. They never gave up when facing difficulties. They showed that great minds don’t just have clever ideas— they also have the courage to turn ideas into reality.
29. What is Einstein best known for?
A. Hybrid rice. B. The theory of relativity.
C. The Archimedean screw. D. The king’s crown story.
30. Why is Yuan Longping called “the Father of Hybrid Rice”?
A. Because he invented hybrid rice.
B. Because he ate hybrid rice every day.
C. Because his work made hybrid rice produce more food.
D. Because he taught people to grow rice.
31. What do Einstein and Yuan Longping have in common?
A. They were both born in China. B. They both worked in physics.
C. They were both hard-working and curious. D. They both lived in ancient times.

How to Be a “Small Great Mind”
You don’t have to be Archimedes or Einstein to be a “great mind”— you can start small in daily life. Here are three ways:
1. Be curious. Great minds love asking “why”. When you see something interesting, like how a plant grows, ask yourself questions. Then try to find answers by reading books or asking teachers. Curiosity helps you learn new things.
2. Think differently. Don’t always follow others’ ideas. For example, if your class is discussing a problem, try to think of a new way to solve it. Einstein once said, “Problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.”
3. Never give up. Great minds face many failures. Archimedes didn’t find the crown’s secret in one day. Yuan Longping spent years researching hybrid rice. If you fail a test or can’t finish a project, don’t stop trying. Keep working hard, and you’ll make progress.
Being a “small great mind” is not about being perfect. It’s about loving learning and trying your best. Start today, and you’ll see the difference!
32. What does the writer advise us to do to be a “small great mind”?
A. To be perfect. B. To follow others’ ideas.
C. To be curious and never give up. D. To avoid failures.
33. What does Einstein’s quote mean?
A. We need new ways to solve problems.
B. Problems are easy to solve.
C. We should use the same ideas to solve problems.
D. Problems can’t be solved.
四、阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(七选五)(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
