One year ago, a couple was enjoying a meal at a beach restaurant with the man's wedding ring, fell from his hand and dropped through the gap in the wooden floor, seemingly lost forever. Recently, when the restaurant manager began replacing the wooden preform, workers uncovered a silver ring alongside an old gold coin and some one hundred dollar bells. A waitress shared a photo of the ring on social media, hoping to find the owner. The post was shared about five thousand times. Three days later, the couples saw the post and contact the restaurant to get back the lost ring. They sent photos as proof dining there. The restaurant returned the ring to the couple by mail. Meanwhile, the manager learned that the gold coin was extremely valuable. IT was from eighteen fifty five and worth as much as two thousand dollars. Bonnie Blumberg has always known her mother’s love for knitting(针织) felt natural. When Bonnie grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, her mother Janice often volunteered to sew costumes for her daughter’s class plays — even for the whole class, staying up late to sew and knit.
Then Janice suffered 40 small strokes(中风) and three serious ones. In 2017, she lost use of her right side and had to use a wheelchair. Two years ago, when Bonnie sold her mother’s house and moved to a smaller place, she found three unfinished knit sweaters while packing. She knew they were for Janice herself, Bonnie, and Bonnie’s daughter.
Bonnie took the sweaters to a local knitting store, hoping to get them finished. The store workers told her about Loose Ends, an organization that connects people with unfinished crafts from ill or passed loved ones to volunteer finishers for free. Founded two years ago, it has nearly 30,000 volunteers who have finished about 3,500 projects.
Loose Ends linked Bonnie with Anna Minmier, a knitter with 20 years of experience. Anna started working on the sweaters, her fingers moving skillfully as if dancing — a habit she’d had since she began knitting at 9.
“Meeting Anna, all I could do was to hug her tightly,” Bonnie said, tears in her eyes. “This project is so special. I’d have paid a lot for it.” Anna spent months finishing the sweaters. She said she felt happy to be part of this story that connects generations, recalling her own grandmother, once a knitter, who stopped due to arthritis (关节炎).
Janice passed away last September. When Bonnie holds the finished sweaters, she’ll hug the memories her mother started. As Loose Ends co-founder Jennifer Simonic said, “It’s more than kindness. These physical things let people hold their missing loved ones close — and that matters a lot.”.
24. What was Janice like according to paragraph 1?
A. Caring and devoted. B. Patient and curious.
C. Diligent and ambitious. D. Friendly and careful.
25. What do we know about Loose Ends from the passage?
A. It mainly connects local stores with craft lovers.
B. It has finished over 30,000 projects in two years.
C. It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge.
D. It was founded to train young volunteers in knitting skills.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Anna could dance skillfully with her fingers at 9 years old.
B. Anna’s grandmother gave up knitting due to serious strokes.
C. Bonnie paid a large amount of money to get the sweater finished.
D. The finished sweaters will serve as a reminder of Bonnie’s mother.
27. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Daughter’s Love for Her Mother’s Sweaters.
B. Anna’s Devotion in Finishing Bonnie’s Sweaters.
C. Loose Ends: Connecting Crafters and Volunteers.
D. Finishing Unfinished Knits, Keeping Memories Alive.

One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to Chat-GPT and specialist therapy(治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy(同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive(直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.
28. What does the underlined word “boon” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Trap. B. Prize. C. Blessing. D. Challenge.
29. What does the recent analysis show about empathy?
A. It calls for clear communication. B. It starts with emotion identification.
C. It rules out individual difference. D. It depends on rich imagination.
30. What can AI do according to Paragraph 4?
A. Provide data-driven feedback. B. Recognize one’s real desire.
C. Update large language models. D. Predict one’s behavior by intuition.
31. What does the author think of ChatGPT?
A. Its development should be sped up. B. Its intelligence is winning more favor.
C. Its application should be strictly managed. D. Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’.
D
Breakfast is food for the brain and for the rest of your body, say experts in children’s nutrition. And taking in those morning calories are worth it, even for people concerned about their weight, a new study finds. Middle-school students who ate breakfast were more likely to have healthy weights than those who skipped breakfast. This was true even for students who ate two breakfasts-one at home and one at school.
“Not skipping breakfast sets you up to not overeat later in the day,” concludes Marlene Schwartz. This psychologist studies obesity(肥胖) and directs the Rudd Center for Obesity & Food Policy at the University of Connecticut in Hartford.
Breakfast is considered so important that many schools now serve it as well as lunch. But at least one study has found that a lot of these kids who take part can end up eating two breakfasts, Schwartz says. People became concerned that kids who ate breakfast at home and at school might become obese.
In fact, Schwartz now says, that's not what her data have turned up.
Her group studied some 600 middle-school students. Over three years, students from 12 different schools—in fifth, sixth and seventh grades -were asked about their breakfasts. Throughout the study about 34 to 44 percent of all students said they regularly ate breakfast at home. Up to 17 percent, or almost one in every six kids, regularly ate breakfast at school. On the whole, about one in every 10 kids reported downing breakfasts both at home and at school.
Eating habits changed somewhat as the kids got older. For instance, fifth graders were more likely to regularly eat breakfast at home. But by seventh grade, 22 percent of the studied kids skipped breakfast frequently.
Surprisingly, at every age, kids who ate breakfast were less likely to be overweight.
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Breakfast is more important to your brain.
B. Eating two breakfasts is better than eating one.
C. Eating breakfast mightn’t cause kids to gain weight.
D. People concerned about their weight should skip breakfast.
33. What’s the possible result of skipping breakfast according to the passage?
A. Being more popular. B. Putting on weight. C. Becoming thinner. D. Being sick.
34. What can we learn about Schwartz’s study?
A. It took her four years to finish her study.
B. Eating habits remained the same as the kids got older.
C. Three different grades’ students took part in her study.
D. The number of students who ate breakfast at home was smaller.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Breakfast is more important than lunch.
B. Eating habits should change as the kids grow.
C. Kids who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight.
D. It is important to develop a good habit of eating two breakfasts.
It hurts to keep secrets. Secrecy is associated with lower well-being, health problems, and less satisfying relationships. There is a seemingly obvious explanation for the harm: Hiding secrets is hard work. You have to watch what you say. If asked about something related to the secret, you must be careful not to slip up(说漏嘴). This could require evasion(逃避) or even deception(欺骗), which can be exhausting.
36 The real problem with keeping a secret is that you have to live with it and think about it.
To better understand the harm caused by secrecy, my colleagues and I first set out to understand what secrets people keep and how often they keep them. 37 A survey of more than 5,000 people found that common secrets include preferences, desires, relationships, cheating, and violations(违背) of others' trust.
Across several studies, we asked participants to estimate how frequently they concealed(隐瞒) their secret during conversations with others, and also how frequently they thought about the secret outside of social interactions. 38 The frequency of active concealment when interacting with others, however, had no relationship to well-being.
Following up this research, a paper reveals why thinking about secrets is so harmful. 39 We found that when a person tells a secret to a third party, it does not reduce how often they have to conceal the secret from others who are still kept in the dark. Rather, it reduces how often their mind wanders toward the secret in irrelevant moments.
The act of sharing a secret can feel relieving, but mere catharsis(宣泄) is not enough. When you tell someone a secret, what is actually helpful is the conversation that follows. 40 When people find a healthier way of thinking about their secret, they focus less on it and have improved well-being.
This new science of secrecy brings both good and bad news. The bad news is that even when we are not hiding our secrets, they are still very much with us and can still hurt us. The good news is that even when we choose to still keep something secret, talking to another person can make a world of difference. Secrets do not have to hurt as much as they do.
A. Turning the question around, we examined the consequences of revealing secrets.
B. Our tendency to mind-wander when we have secrets seems most harmful to our well-being.
C. Our studies suggest that what is important is avoiding talking to another person about a secret.
D. We found that the more frequently people thought about their secrets, the lower their well-being.
E. New research, however, suggests that the harm of secrets does not really come from having to hide them, after all.
F. We found that 97 per cent of people have at least one secret at any given moment, and people have, on average, 13 secrets.
G. People report that when sharing a secret with another person, they often receive emotional support, useful guidance and helpful advice, all of which make people feel more confident and capable of coping with the secret.

An Unforgivable Mistake
A few years ago, the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers(行凶抢劫者) in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a $10 bill in my back pocket.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped(撞) into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of muggers in the park occurred to me. It could have been a mugger! I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket. The money was missing! I immediately started to run after the jogger. I finally caught up with and grabbed him firmly by the arm. I started shouting and demanding that he give me the $10 bill. I’m not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper at that moment. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately interrupted(插话), “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
Paragraph 1:
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

Hello, listeners! On today’s “My Story”, we are going to hear about a couple’s story. One year ago, a couple was enjoying a meal at a beach restaurant when the man’s wedding ring fell from his hand and dropped through the gap in the wooden floor, seemingly lost forever. Recently, when the restaurant manager began replacing the wooden platform, workers uncovered a silver ring alongside an old gold coin and some $100 bills. A waitress shared a photo of the ring on social media, hoping to find the owner. The post was shared about 5,000 times. Three days later, the couple saw the post and contacted the restaurant to get back the lost ring. They sent photos as proof of dining there. The restaurant returned the ring to the couple by mail. Meanwhile, the manager learned that the gold coin was extremely valuable. It was from 1855 and worth as much as $2,000.

A 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第一段“Bonnie Blumberg has always known her mother’s love for knitting(针织) felt natural. When Bonnie grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, her mother Janice often volunteered to sew costumes for her daughter’s class plays — even for the whole class, staying up late to sew and knit.(当Bonnie在20世纪60年代和70年代长大时,她的母亲Janice经常自愿为女儿班级的戏剧缝制服装——甚至为整个班级缝制,熬夜缝纫和编织。)” 故选A。
根据第三段“The store workers told her about Loose Ends, an organization that connects people with unfinished crafts from ill or passed loved ones to volunteer finishers for free. (店员向她介绍了Loose Ends,这是一个免费将病重或已故亲人的未完成手工艺品与志愿者完成者联系起来的组织。)”可知,Loose Ends组织的主要功能是帮助人们完成未完成的手工艺品,而且不收取任何费用。因此,选项C“It helps people complete unfinished crafts without charge.(它帮助人们免费完成未完成的手工艺品)”符合题意。故选C。
根据最后一段“When Bonnie holds the finished sweaters, she’ll hug the memories her mother started.(当Bonnie拿着织完的毛衣时,她会紧紧拥抱母亲开始的回忆。)” D“The finished sweaters will serve as a reminder of Bonnie’s mother.(完成的毛衣将成为Bonnie对母亲的回忆)”符合题意。故选D。
C
C 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第二段的“Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans.(一些专家认为这是一件boon。
根据第三段的“One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980and 2019, which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. (最近有一项关于同理心的分析,研究了1980年至2019年间发表的52项研究,结果表明,产生同理心的人首先必须能够识别出对方的感受。)”可知,关于同理心的最近分析表明,同理心的首要条件是能够识别另一个人的感受。故选B。
30. 推理判断题。根据第四段的“On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. 故选A。
根据第四段的“But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation. (但在其他标准方面,人工智能在很多方面仍未达标。同理心是一种人际关系的体现,持续的反馈有助于完善产生同理心者的回应,这也需要对一个人及其处境有一定程度的直觉意识。)”以及最后一段的“At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chat-bots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend. (最终,尽管我在网上与多个聊天机器人进行了交流,但我还是做了我一直知道自己必须做的事:我拿起电话,给一个朋友打了电话。)”可知,虽然ChatGPT能提供一定的帮助,但在作者看来,它的人工善意仍然不能与真实的人类情感交流相比。由此可推知,作者认为它的人工善意无法与人类的相比。故选D。

根据第一段第二句话“And taking in those morning calories are worth it, even for people concerned about their weight, a new study finds. Middle-school students who ate breakfast were more likely to have healthy weights than those who skipped breakfast.(一项新的研究发现,即使对那些关心自己体重的人来说,早晨摄入这些卡路里也是有必要的。吃早餐的中学生比不吃早餐的中学生更有可能拥有健康的体重。)”可知,关心体重的人也需要吃早餐,吃早餐的中学生比不吃早餐的中学生更有可能拥有健康的体重,由此推知,吃早餐可能不会导致孩子体重增加。故选C。
33. 推理判断题。根据第二段第一句话“‘Not skipping breakfast sets you up to not overeat later in the day,’ concludes Marlene Schwartz. (玛琳·施瓦茨总结道:“不错过早餐会让你在一天中晚些时候不会吃得过多。”)”可推知,如果不吃早餐,晚些时候可能会吃的更多,从而导致肥胖。故选B。

第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
E 37. F 38. D 39. A 40. G
36. 根据首段中的“Hiding secrets is hard work. You have to watch what you say. If asked about something related to the secret, you must be careful not to slip up. This could require evasion or even deception, which can be exhausting.(保守秘密会让人感到痛苦。保密与较低的幸福感、健康问题以及不那么令人满意的人际关系有关。这种危害似乎有一个显而易见的解释:隐瞒秘密是一项艰巨的任务。你必须注意自己的言辞。如果被问及与秘密相关的事情,你必须小心不要说漏嘴。这可能需要回避或者甚至欺骗,而这些都会让人感到疲惫)”可知,本段的重心是论述隐藏秘密很艰苦。结合第二段第二句“The real problem with keeping a secret is that you have to live with it and think about it.(保守秘密的真正问题在于,你必须一直承受着它的压力,并不断思考它)”可知,第二段与第一段的话题发生了变化,第一题要起承上启下的作用,要体现这种转折之意。
37. 根据第二题前面一句话“To better understand the harm caused by secrecy, my colleagues and I first set out to understand what secrets people keep and how often they keep them.(为了更深入地了解保密行为所造成的危害,我和我的同事们首先着手研究人们会保守哪些秘密,以及他们会持续保守这些秘密的频率)”可知,作者研究人们保守哪些秘密以及保守这些秘密的频率,第二题要承接该话题,要介绍作者和同事的研究的结果如何。
39. 结合第四题前面一句“Following up this research, a paper reveals why thinking about secrets is so harmful.(在此研究的基础上,有一篇论文揭示了思考秘密为何会如此有害)”和后面一句“We found that when a person tells a secret to a third party, t does not reduce how often they have to conceal the secret from others who are still kept in the dark.(我们发现,当一个人向第三方透露了一个秘密时,这并不会减少他们向那些仍不知情的人隐瞒该秘密的次数)”可知,本段用论文作为依据说明思考秘密有害。 故选A项。
40. 根据第五题前一句“When you tell someone a secret, what is actually helpful is the conversation that follows.(当你向某人透露一个秘密时,真正重要的在于之后的对话交流)”可知,所填句要承接上句,要提及接下来的谈话能有什么帮助。选项G表示“People report that when sharing a secret with another person, they often receive emotional support, useful guidance and helpful advice, all of which make people feel more confident and capable of coping with the secret.(人们反映,当与他人分享秘密时,他们往往会获得情感上的支持、有用的指导以及有益的建议,所有这些都会让人心情更加舒畅,也更有信心去应对这个秘密)”,说明了告诉他人秘密后可以收获的东西及其意义,与推断相吻合。故选G项。

Dear David,
I’m very sorry to hear that a conflict occurred between you and your mother because of your Internet addiction.
In my opinion, you should apologize to your mother, as she has done nothing wrong to prevent you from Internet addiction. Excessive internet usage has many negative effects. Many students spend most of their time playing computer games or chatting aimlessly with others, which may not only result in poor health and decline in study but also loss of communication in the real world.
When available, you may as well walk outside with your friends or take some exercise to keep fit instead of playing online games. Only in this way can you live and study happily and healthily.
Yours,
Li Hua

For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. “How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? I still remembered his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I had met that jogger, but in vain.
Paragraph 2:
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.
