A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

When Mrs.Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Having got the approval of their mother, the children began to carry out the plan happily. Early in the morning, they couldn’t wait to call at Bernard’s house, telling Bernard the plan. So touched was Bernard’s mother that she burst into tears. Afterwards, they got down to making preparations together with Bernard. Soon after, they succeeded in making popcorn and packed it with paper bags.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He went door to door around the community where he lived, nervous and anxious along the way. Much to his astonishment, his popcorn was very popular for its low price as well as the nice flavor. It was not long before bags of popcorn were sold out, which was far beyond his expectations. Holding the money he earned tightly in his hand, he knew without the Meredith family’s kindness and assistance, his family would still be suffering in years to come.

Yesterday, our next door neighbour, Mrs. Green, was having a difficult day. I noticed something was wrong when I saw her pacing back and forth in her yard with a worried look on her face.
I went over to ask if she was okay. With a sigh, she told me that her car had broken down and she had an important doctor’s appointment that she couldn’t miss. Her son, Tom, was away on a business trip and couldn’t help her at the moment.
Without hesitation, I said I could drive her to the doctor’s. She was so relieved and grateful. On the way, she shared with me that she had been feeling a bit under the weather lately and this doctor’s visit was crucial for her to get some proper medical advice.
When we arrived at the doctor’s office, I waited patiently in the waiting room. After a while, Mrs. Green came out with a much more relaxed expression. She said the doctor had given her some useful medications and positive advice, which made her feel much better.
However, when we got back home, we found that there was a big puddle(水洼) of water in front of her house. It turned out that a pipe in her backyard had burst while we were away. Mrs. Green’s face fell again, and she seemed at a loss.
I quickly took out my phone and started to call some local plumbers(水管工), but it was already late in the afternoon, and most of them were either busy with other jobs or had already closed for the day. Mrs. Green’s anxiety grew as the water continued to-spread. We tried to use some old towels to soak up the water, but it was a useless effort against the continuous flow. The situation seemed rather hopeless at that moment, and we were both starting to worry about the potential damage to her house.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just then, my husband, Jack, came back from work.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mrs. Green, with tears in her eyes, thanked us sincerely.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
Just then, my husband, Jack, came back from work. Seeing our worried faces and the messy scene, he immediately asked what had happened. After learning about the burst pipe, he rolled up his sleeves and said he would give it a try. Jack was handy with tools and had some basic knowledge of plumbing. He quickly located the source of the leak and managed to turn off the main water supply. Then, he spent nearly an hour fixing the pipe with the tools we had at home. Although he got all wet, he didn’t stop until the problem was completely solved.
Mrs. Green, with tears in her eyes, thanked us sincerely. She said she didn’t know what she would have done without our help. She was deeply touched by our kindness and willingness to go out of our way for her. From that day on, our relationship with Mrs. Green became even closer. We often visited each other, shared meals, and helped one another whenever in need. This experience taught us that a little help can make a big difference in someone’s life, and the warmth of the neighborhood lies in these acts of kindness.

Every morning, he sat quietly and motionless on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so distant and sad. Every morning, my daughter and I walked to her kindergarten and we passed his house. We were new to the neighbourhood, so I didn’t know many of my neighbours. On one beautiful morning, as we passed his house, my daughter joyfully called out to him, ‘Hi, Mr. Man!’ She was an outgoing girl, and I wasn’t surprised at her cheerfulness, but her enthusiasm soon faded when the man didn’t look at her or say ‘Hi’ back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter curiously asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Stumbling for words, because I didn’t have the answer, I said simply, ‘Maybe he is having a bad day.’
Once back home, I washed the breakfast dishes, and I thought about ‘Mr. Man.’ What was his story? Why did he seem so sad? Determined to do something to cheer him up, I brainstormed a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbours tending her front garden. After I introduced myself, she invited me in for a chat. She was a long-time resident of the neighbourhood, who knew everyone and everything. She was a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man who lived nearby, she grew serious. ‘Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.’
The following week seemed to fly by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to bring a smile to Mr. Man’s face.
注意:

Paragraph 1: With every suggestion I made, my daughter simply said ‘No, not that.’

Paragraph 2: Inside, in perfect calligraphy, it simply read, ‘Thank you, from Mr. Man.’
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】With every suggestion I made, my daughter simply said ‘No, not that.’ Under my questioning, she spoke her own mind. She wanted to write an invitation to Bob this afternoon, inviting him to come over for the evening. I could make a nice dinner for him, and we could eat and talk with him as a family, so he wouldn’t be so sad and lonely. The happy atmosphere of the family can make people feel happiness from the bottom of their hearts. In the evening, when Bob came over for dinner with the family, it was a little awkward at first. Later, in our conversation and laughter, Bob laughed in delight. After dinner, we invited him to come over often. The next morning, we received a letter.
Inside, in perfect calligraphy, it simply read, ‘Thank you, from Mr. Man.’ When we opened the letter, we saw that it was written by Bob. We were happy because Bob had regained his hope for life. A month later, Bob came to our house with a gift. My family was very happy. Bob told us about his recent situation. He said it was my daughter cheerfulness and our family’s warm atmosphere that awoke him. He had begun to work hard and live happily. Later in that evening, my daughter said to me proudly, “Mom, we have brought a smile to Mr. Man’s face”. “Yes, we have made it.” I gently hugged her and smiled.

My mum died on a cold and rainy December morning. The dark clouds and constant light rain over her Cape Cod neighbourhood fit our sadness as my brothers and sisters and I arranged with the local funeral (葬礼) home for Mum’s last departure from her beloved house on the edge of the river.
All five of us were there, having been alerted (警觉) earlier that week. As soon as we had gotten “The Call”, we had immediately flown or driven from our homes in California, Florida, Georgia and New York to the house by the river.
As I joined my brothers and sisters at the house on the Cape, I felt oddly peaceful. Though I was afraid to lose my mother, I wasn’t anxious about the process. I knew that Mum had prepared well for her death. All we had to do was be present for her and each other during this final stage. She had done everything else.
Mum was a born teacher and a natural organizer. When she had received the diagnosis (诊断) of incurable cancer that September, she had planned her death as practically as she had planned her busy life as a wife, mother and professional.
Mum did think fondly of her neighbours and friends. Even though she had declined to share her remaining time with them, she wanted to acknowledge their friendly care and express her lasting affection for them. So Mum had asked my older sister to purchase, on her behalf, a case of wine. The small bottles were to be decorated with ribbons (缎带) and delivered by us in person, after Mum’s death, to those neighbours who had been her favourite local companions.
Accordingly, in the early afternoon, as the cold morning rain gave way to a watery blue sky, all five of us set out to walk through the neighbourhood together, braving the cold air. Taking turns carrying the heavy boxes, we visited every house. Together, we carried the news of her death, that final gift of beribboned bottles, and her instruction to her friends: “Please use this Champagne to toast to our friendship.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
We hugged, and cried, and laughed, with neighbour after neighbour. We gave each special person Mum's last gift, a gift that reflected her unique flair for life and honoured the strength of their mutual affection. And my mother the teacher taught me one more lesson. As I walked in her shoes and hugged in her place, I felt her love flow through me to each grieving friend. With it flowed my love for her and my heartbreak at her death. And, with each hug, an answering affection poured from each person. My breaking heart opened as 1 absorbed through my sorrow, the joy of a life well lived and friends well loved.
As the five of us returned to the house, we saw, against the backdrop of the grey sky,a breathtakingly beautiful rainbow. It made us all laugh. Obviously. Mum had orchestrated the whole thing from her new seat in the heavens, "Stop the rain so my children can deliver those bottles without getting wet." she probably instructed. The storm clouds had obediently dispersed, just long enough for us to fulfill Mum's last request and, in the process, learn one more lesson about whole-hearted love. Clearly, a rainbow that arched over the whole sky was the perfect way for Mum to express her approval.

Harry Caine retired from a local power company. After his retirement, he just wanted to do something for his community. One day, he spotted many abandoned bikes, which were gathering dust in the neighbouring garages. “Why not fix them up and give them to those needy?” he thought. So he posted to an online group in his Alaska Homer, offering to fix people’s bikes for free.
Soon some neighbors began to donate their abandoned bikes after their kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models. Then, in Harry’s tidy little garage, he set about working. Its inner walls lined with tools, the garage held a workbench and repair stand. Classic rock music often drifted from its open doors, a sign that Harry was working hard. After Harry’s highly skilled repairs, the donated bikes took on new looks and functioned very well.
One Saturday, Harry transported the first batch of six repaired bikes to a nearby food bank, a place that gave food to the poor. He camped out with his Free Bikes sign and waited to see whether the bikes were needed. Five minutes later, a little boy wearing worn-out clothes came up to Harry with a doubtful look, his eyes glued to a blue bike, “Is it really free?” the boy asked. “Yes. If you like it, it’s yours.” Harry answered joyfully. The boy beamed a broad smile. He briskly walked towards the blue bicycle. Then he touched its handle, pressed its bell, and explained how he had dreamed of owning one bicycle. Grinning with delight, Harry watched him pedal away and disappear in the distance. The following 30 minutes saw the remaining bikes ridden away, which gave him a sense of satisfaction.
As word of Harry’s project spread, neighbors admirably called him Uncle Harry, and they kept him busy with a steady supply of bikes, helmets and even locks. However, with more abandoned bikes flooding in, Harry had his hands full and the repairing work was more than he could deal with.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To match each bike with its new owner, Harry gathered their specific needs.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
Knowing Harry’s situation, a group of volunteers came to help him. They came from all walks of life—students, retirees and even some stay-at-home parents, each eager to lend a hand. They selflessly devoted their time, skills, and knowledge to tackling piles of the donated bikes. Together, they sorted the bikes by size and condition before the repairs. Harry’s garage came alive with energy, filled with laughter and lively conversations as the volunteers worked side by side. With volunteers’ support, Harry was determined to expand the project to more people. And he thought it was necessary to offer each of them a right bike.
To match each bike with its new owner, Harry gathered their specific needs. Along with the volunteers, Harry carefully took into account individual preferences, such as bike styles, colors, and sizes, as well as ages, addresses and occupations. With the valuable information, every bike was perfectly tailored to meet the recipients’ needs. Once the bikes were fully repaired, they delivered each bike in person to the recipient’s home, ensuring it was an ideal fit. The recipients were overjoyed, expressing their heartfelt gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. This personalized approach not only warmed their hearts but also strengthened community bonds, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and connecting.

The sky turned an unusual orange as 16-year-old Kalyna checked the saddle (马鞍) on Sovereignty. Wildfires had been spreading through the Los Angeles area for days, forcing nearly 200,000 people to leave their homes. The air smelled like burnt toast, making Kalyna’s eyes water. Kalyna’s family had already loaded their horses onto trucks, but Sovereignty — a nervous brown horse belonging to their neighbor — refused to enter the vehicle. Flames moved closer, coloring the sky red. His ears twitched (抽动) nervously as flames licked the mountainside three miles away.
“Easy, boy,” Kalyna whispered, trying to keep him calm. She knew time was running out. When Sovereignty stepped back nervously, smelling the smoke, Kalyna made a quick decision. Holding his reins (缰绳) tightly, she climbed onto his back. “We’ll do this together,” she said.
The 14-mile escape path went through dangerous mountains. Kalyna sometimes rode and sometimes walked beside Sovereignty to save his energy. Burning pieces of wood flew around them like angry bees, while her father followed behind in his car, headlights shining through the smoky air. Twice, Sovereignty stopped at broken branches, his body wet with sweat. Kalyna’s legs hurt, and her throat felt dry, but she kept talking softly to the horse. “Just a little farther,” she encouraged, offering him water from her canteen.
As they reached the safe area, people waiting by the road cheered. Sovereignty’s ears moved forward at the sounds. Kalyna got off the horse, her legs shaking slightly, and touched her face to the horse’s sweating side. “We made it,” she said quietly. A firefighter ran toward them, but Kalyna kept watching Sovereignty—now eating grass peacefully, as if nothing had happened. Kalyna smiled weakly, her heart pounding despite the relief.

Two months later, Kalyna stood meroously at an award ceremony. When her name was called, the crowd cheered loudly, their cheers echoing through the grand hall. Holding the medal, she remembered the smoky air and Sovereignty’s nervous eyes. “I just did what felt right,” she told everyone, her voice shaking. A reporter asked why she risked her life. Kalyna smiled slightly and said, “When you love someone—even a horse—you don’t think about danger.” The room fell silent, for a moment before bursting into warmer applause.
Backstage, a familiar horse sound made Kalyna turn quickly. Sovereignty stood there with a blue ribbon, his head held high. Her father waved from behind. “He wanted to thank you,” her father said. Kalyna hugged the horse’s strong neck, feeling his steady heartbeat against her cheek. Outside, the setting sun painted the sky gold—no longer red with fire, but bright with promise. “Ready to go home?” she whispered. Sovereignty lowered his head in agreement. Side by side, they walked toward the horizon, their shadows stretching long under the peaceful evening sky.

Jenson went to the swimming pool quite early this morning. He was hoping that there would be another swimmer, but not his annoying neighbor Mr. Jostice. However, when he got to the pool, Mr. Jostice was the only swimmer there, floating on his back in the deep end.
Jenson waved at him half-heartedly before diving in and doing a few freestyle laps. When he stopped, Mr. Jostice said, “Great job if you were doing the breaststroke (蛙泳). You have to keep your hands cupped the whole time for the freestyle stroke. And you’re not dropping your head enough to breathe properly. You should see how my grandson Little Swedan swims ...”
“Grrr ...!” Jenson thought. He dived underwater and swam away. After a few strokes, just out of curiosity, he cupped his hands the way Mr. Jostice had advised. His stroke did seem smoother. He tried lowering his head a bit, which seemed to make him faster.
He swam to the shallow end of the pool. Maybe having Mr. Jostice around wasn’t so bad. He wondered how Mr. Jostice knew so much about swimming techniques. He glanced at where he had been floating, but he was no longer there. Suddenly he noticed a large, bright mass on the bottom of the pool. He stared at it. Not it — him — Mr. Jostice. He wasn’t moving! “Oh no!” Jenson cried. Mr. Jostice looked like he was unconscious ... or worse!
“Help! Help! Someone is drowning!” Jenson yelled. He didn’t know whether anyone heard him. It was only a few minutes past six o’clock. Nobody seemed to be awake or outside.
He’d have to rescue Mr. Jostice himself. He dived under the water and swam toward him as fast as he could. But when he got closer to his still body, he wasn’t sure what to do. Mr. Jostice was so large. How could he possibly lift him? Jenson wrapped one arm around his neck, paddling up through the water and kicking with all his strength to the top.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
He finally managed to push Mr. Jostice out of water. The old man lay face up on the poolside, his chest not moving. Panic rushed through Jenson, but he remembered the first-aid lesson from school. He knelt beside Mr. Jostice, tilted his head back, and pinched his nose shut. Taking a deep breath, he covered Mr. Jostice’s mouth with his own and blew air into his lungs. He repeated this twice, then placed his hands on Mr. Jostice’s chest and pressed hard, counting rhythmically, “One, two, three…”
Mr. Jostice lay still, and Jenson kept pressing. His arms ached, but he didn’t stop. Suddenly, Mr. Jostice coughed violently, spitting out water. Jenson froze, then smiled with relief. “Are you okay?” he asked, patting the old man’s back. Mr. Jostice opened his eyes weakly. “Thanks, kid… You saved me,” he whispered. Just then, a lifeguard ran over. Jenson explained what happened, and Mr. Jostice squeezed his hand. “Guess I owe you a swimming lesson now,” he joked, making Jenson laugh.

While walking along the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Barrow was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I rushed into the sub way station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court (美食广场) was attracting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes, it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for some food. But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, without a hat and gloves. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】One possible version:
My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly putting aside his miracle meal, my neighbour stood up and guided the elderly man to share his seat. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbour tenderly put his jacket over the elderly man’s shoulders. He said with a smile, “Can you help out?”, passing the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in his hands. The old man obviously was astonished, but he accepted it with gratitude. Seeing this, I was so ashamed of myself. At the moment, my head and heart stopped battling, determined to buy a meal for my neighbour.
I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. Despite a sense of guilt in my heart, I felt it was my job to do the same. After a while, I came back with steaming soup and a sandwich. I approached my neighbour respectfully, “Can you help me out?” I asked “Why not?” He responded jokingly. People around cast admiring look on me, which made me relieved. It wasn’t until that day that I truly understand the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station, feeling warmer, even if the bitter cold wind filled the air.

We used to live in a small village. While all of the villagers were quite poor, my family was relatively better off. My mother would bring over whatever food we could spare to our neighbors.
The Lim family, who ran a bicycle shop just opposite our house, was the poorest one. It was hard for Lim to feed his twelve growing children daily. It became even harder when the economy was doing very badly in the 1930’s. For many people, three meals a day was a luxury, let alone buying a new bicycle. Even my family had to make ends meet with two meals a day.
One day, I noticed my mother seemed very troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. There and then, she decided to sacrifice part of our meals for the family. Despite my protest that we too were hungry, she kept on doing the kind act from then on. Fortunately, the troubled situation did not last long, and the children in our family returned to our three meals a day again.
As time went on, I noticed that Mr Lim grew cheerful, too. The number of customers at his shop kept increasing. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as bicycles were very useful and popular for transport then.
However, it was at this time that my father’s business took a turn for the worse. My father was a grocery owner and he trusted people readily. One day, his senior assistant ran off with almost all the shop’s earnings. My father had to make up for the loss.
During that time, his health was also worsening. One night, my father suddenly fainted (晕厥). My mother tried several times to wake him up but failed. We children were all frightened and cried loudly.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing our cries, Mr Lim rushed to help. The moment he figured out the emergency, Mr Lim quickly drove my father to the nearest hospital and paid the medical bill. Luckily, the operation turned out a success. While my father was in hospital, Mr Lim often visited us with some necessities. To relieve my mother’s burden, he even drove us to school every day.
Finally, my father recovered but had more bills to pay. Again Mr Lim came to our rescue. He lent us some money and arranged for my father to work in his shop to get some income. At the same time, he financed the education for me and my sister and brother. Whenever my parents thanked him for his help, he just simply said that our kindness deserved it. Finally, I understood the old saying that a good neighbor is better than a distant cousin. I felt blessed to live in such a good neighborhood.

Man’s face.
