It started the space age. Later, NASA (美国国家航天航空局) in the US sent Explorer I to space. In the following years, humans made great progress—for example, astronauts walked on the moon in the 1960s! Today, space exploration (探索) carries on. Governments still compete to make new discoveries. In 2011, NASA began a Mars project: they landed a spaceship on Mars to study the planet. ________ However, there’s a big change now: private companies are entering the space field. Take SpaceX as an example. It succeeded in commercial (商业的) space travel. Its spaceship Dragon sends daily things to the space station. The company started SpaceX in 2014 and hoped to send people to Mars by 2026. Another company, Virgin Galactic, was started in 2004. Its resolution is to open space travel to everyone. The company has sold nearly 700 tickets, each costing. $250,000! Those future space tourists come from different countries and are different ages. Private companies don’t depend on government money, but accidents can still happen. In 2014, a Virgin Galactic spaceship crashed (坠毁) during a test, and an astronaut died. In the same year, a SpaceX spaceship exploded (爆炸) in Florida. No one was hurt, but important information was lost. More companies are joining space competitions. You have just found a group of fireflies (萤火虫), and their twinkling (闪烁的) lights are like a secret language. This nighttime light show, especially in the forest, has interested people for a long time. Let’s explore (探索) the secret of fireflies. ②Do you know how fireflies make their tails shine? The special power of fireflies to make light is called bioluminescence (生物发光), a special ability to create their own light through a chemical reaction (化学反应). It happens when two chemicals in their bodies join together and produce light. ③However, why do fireflies need to produce light in the dark? Now, imagine you are a firefly looking for someone special in the dark. How would you find Mr. or Ms. Right? Fireflies use their lights to send “hello” messages to each other. Each kind of firefly has its own special way to shine. They use their lights as an invitation to get to know each other better so that they can have baby fireflies. ④But fireflies do not just use their lights for conversations. They also use them to stay safe. Imagine you are an adult firefly in the dark, and a big spider is trying to catch you. What do you do? You turn on your light to make a sign that tells the spider “I taste disgusting. You won’t like me. So don’t eat me.” ⑤Besides, some scientists say fireflies may also use their lights to hunt. Imagine you’re a hungry firefly waiting in the dark. You flash lights to trick other insects into coming closer. When the curious prey (猎物) gets near—suddenly! —You catch a quick snack. It’s like using a glowing “free food” sign to attract dinner! ⑥This story of fireflies tells us how amazing and wonderful the natural world is. Exploring the world of fireflies helps us see how important it is to take care of nature and all its amazing organisms (生物), no matter how small they are. 1.How do fireflies make their tails shine? A.By collecting sunlight in the day. B.By collecting little lights around them. C.Through a chemical reaction inside them. D.With the help of other insects. 2.Why do fireflies need to make light in the dark according to the passage? a. To help stay safe.                        b. To see their way clearly at night. c. To make the night more beautiful.        d. To talk to each other as a language. e. To hunt for other insects. A.a, d, e B.a, c, d C.b, c, e D.a, b, c 3.What does the underlined word “disgusting” mean in the passage? A.Hot. B.Sweet. C.Awful. It is in South America. It is so wide that it covers a little more than the half size of China! The Amazon River runs through the rainforest. It’s the world’s second longest river. The Amazon Rainforest covers much of Brazil. The green colour on the national flag of Brazil stands for the rainforest. However, climate change and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to a new study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon Rainforest may turn into hot, dry grassland in a few years. Why is the Amazon “sick”? The Amazon Rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire. Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. All these kinds of activities have made about 17% of the rainforest disappear. ▲ The Amazon Rainforest is like the lungs (肺) of our planet. The rich plants there take CO₂ out of the air and make oxygen (氧气). They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon Rainforest “dies”, there will be more CO₂, and our earth will become even hotter. The Amazon Rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 1.According to the passage, what is NOT the reason that makes the Amazon Rainforest “sick”? A.People burn the forest to make farmland. B.Climate change. C.People cut down trees. D.Too many animals and plants live there. 2.What will happen if the Amazon Rainforest “dies”? A.People will lose their lungs. B.Many animals and plants will disappear. C.We will feel colder. D.There will be more oxygen. 3.What does the underlined word “droughts” mean? A.Too little rain. B.Too little snow. C.Too much rain. D.Too much fire. 4.Which of the following statements is NOT true? A.The Amazon Rainforest is in South America. B.The Amazon Rainforest is the world’s biggest rainforest. C.The Amazon River is the world’s longest river. D.More than 3 million animals and plants live in the Amazon Rainforest. 5.新考向 [信息回填] Choose the best sentence to fill in the ▲ in the passage. A.Where is the Amazon Rainforest? B.Who lives in the Amazon Rainforest? C.How can we protect the Amazon Rainforest? D.What will happen if we lose the Amazon Rainforest? 根据“But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change”和“Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland”可知,A、B、C选项都是造成雨林“生病”的原因,没有提到D选项。故选D。 2.细节理解题。根据“The Amazon Rainforest is also home to over 3 million animals and plants. Many of them can’t live anywhere else. They would very likely just disappear.”可知,如果亚马逊雨林“死亡”,许多动植物将会消失,故选B。 3.词句猜测题。根据“The Amazon Rainforest is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. The trees don’t have enough water to grow.”可知,这里说的是原本湿润的雨林受到某种情况影响,树木没有足够的水生长,所以“droughts”意思是干旱,即雨水太少,故选A。 4.细节理解题。根据“It’s the world’s second longest river.” D。 AI technology has been used in many fields and is now playing an increasingly important role in matters of public interest. A group of students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) has developed an AI system (系统) that restores (修复) old photos of missing children. Until now, they have been providing technological support for many parents with over 1, 000 restored photos and helped reunite (使重聚) 11 missing children with their families. The team was built by Sheng Jianzhong in 2020, when he was a student at HUST. He first thought to restore photographs of missing children when he saw a missing child notice with an unclear photo. As he was studying digital image processing (数字图像处理), he decided to use his skills to help the parents restore their images. But the system cannot be completed by one person alone. Luckily, many students soon volunteered to join Sheng’s project. After half a year, they developed an image restoration AI system that solved the problem of unclear faces in photographs. A restored image can be produced in just a few minutes. Parents can then print the high-quality images of their missing children onto T-shirts or large posters (海报). In many cases, the team doesn’t directly connect with the families. And sometimes the families don’t even know the team has helped them. “But we still feel satisfied, and we are happy for them,” Sheng said. In the future, Sheng plans to build a better team. “It would use technology to help people who have lost their loved ones, and also encourage more young people to work for public good,” he said. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 1.Who has developed an AI system that restores old photos of missing children? A.A group of students at HUST. B.A group of teachers at HUST. C.A group of missing children. D.A group of parents who lost their children. 2.What made Sheng get the idea of the project? A.A notice he saw. B.A photo of his friend. C.A missing child he knew. D.An activity in his school. 3.Why has the AI technology brought hope to many families? A.Because it saved the printing time of the photos. B.Because it provided large posters for the families. C.Because it had lots of volunteers from local universities. It exists in various forms and plays multiple essential roles in different aspects of our world. One of the most obvious yet crucial (关键的) aspects is its role in sustaining life. Every living organism, from the tiniest microbe to the largest mammal, needs water to survive. In humans, water makes up a significant portion of our body mass. It is involved in countless biological processes such as digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation. Without an adequate supply of water, our bodies would quickly start to malfunction. In the natural world, water shapes landscapes in astonishing ways. Glaciers, which are huge masses of ice (solid water), have carved out deep valleys and fjords over thousands of years. Rivers are like the life-giving arteries of the land, providing habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals. They also transport nutrients and sediments, enriching the soil in floodplains (洪泛区) and supporting fertile (肥沃的) agricultural areas. Water is also of great importance in human activities. In agriculture, it is used for irrigation to grow crops that feed the global population. Without proper watering, food production would be severely limited. In industry, water serves as a coolant, a solvent (溶剂), and a medium for many manufacturing processes. Moreover, water has a profound cultural and recreational (娱乐的) significance. Many of the world’s most famous landmarks, like the Venice canals in Italy, are centered around water. Water-based activities such as swimming, surfing, and boating are popular forms of recreation, bringing joy and relaxation to millions of people. During childhood, asking questions such as “Why is the sky blue?” or “How do birds fly?” shows a natural desire to explore the world. This curiosity drives learning and shapes their development in amazing ways. First, curiosity improves learning. When children are curious, their brains become active in searching for answers. For example, a child who wonders how plants grow might read books, watch videos, or even plant seeds to observe the process. This hands-on experience helps them remember information better and builds critical thinking skills. Second, curiosity encourages creativity. Curious kids often try new activities or solve problems in unique ways. Imagine a child experimenting with building blocks: they might fail many times, but each attempt teaches them something new. Over time, they learn to think outside the box and develop creative solutions. Also, curiosity helps children face challenges. Life is full of unknowns, but curious minds see challenges as adventures. Students struggling with math might ask questions, seek help, and practice until they succeed. This builds confidence and resilience. To support children’s growth, parents and teachers should encourage questions, provide learning resources, and let them explore safely. Remember, curiosity is not just about finding answers—it’s about enjoying the journey of discovery. By nurturing curiosity, we help kids become lifelong learners and creative thinkers. In short, curiosity lights the path of growth. Let’s protect this precious gift in every child! 1.What is curiosity compared to in the article? A.A treasure map. B.A dark night. C.A magic key. D.A mystery box. 2.Which question does the article mention as an example of children’s curiosity? A.How do birds fly? B.Why do animals have different colors? C.What causes seasons to change? D.When do stars appear? 3.What skill does a child develop by planting seeds to observe plant growth? A.Artistic talent. B.Critical thinking. C.Musical ability. D.Physical strength. 4.How does curiosity help children face challenges according to the article? A.By making them avoid difficulties. B.By teaching them to see challenges as adventures. It covers approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface, yet the availability of fresh water suitable for human consumption is alarmingly limited. Oceans hold the vast majority of water on Earth, but this is saline and unfit for direct drinking or most agricultural uses without desalination processes. Fresh water exists in various forms, such as rivers, lakes, groundwater, and glaciers. Rivers are not only crucial water sources but also act as arteries, transporting water across landscapes and supporting diverse ecosystems. Groundwater, stored in underground aquifers, is a vital resource, especially in arid regions. However, the over-extraction of groundwater has led to problems like land subsidence in some areas. The water cycle, a continuous process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, plays a fundamental role in replenishing the Earth’s water supply. Solar energy drives the evaporation of water from water bodies, which then rises into the atmosphere, cools, and condenses into clouds before falling back to the surface as rain or snow. Nevertheless, water resources are under severe threat. Pollution from industrial waste, agricultural runoff containing pesticides and fertilizers, and improper sewage disposal contaminates water sources. Additionally, climate change is disrupting the water cycle, leading to more extreme weather events like droughts and floods. 1.What percentage of the Earth’s surface is covered by water? A.About 29%. B.About 50%. C.About 71%. D.About 80%. 2.Why is most of the water in the oceans not suitable for direct human use? A.It is too cold. B.It contains too much salt. C.It is polluted. D.It is in a gaseous state. 3.Which of the following is a form of fresh water? A.Saline water in the ocean. B.Water vapor in the air. C.Groundwater. D.Water in a polluted lake. 4.What drives the evaporation in the water cycle? A.Wind. B.Earth’s rotation. C.Solar energy. D.Moon’s gravity. 5.What are the main threats to water resources according to the passage? A.Earthquakes and tsunamis. B.Pollution and climate change. C.High temperature and strong winds. Traditional media, such as newspapers, radio, and television, once dominated how people consumed information and entertainment. However, with the rise of the internet and digital technology, these platforms now face unprecedented challenges. According to recent statistics, the global digital media market is expected to reach $350 billion by 2025, while print media continues to decline, with newspaper circulation dropping by nearly 50% since the early 2000s. Digital media has revolutionized how content is created, distributed, and consumed. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become primary sources of news for many users, especially younger generations. These platforms enable instant sharing of information, allowing news to spread virally within minutes. However, this speed has also led to challenges, such as the spread of misinformation and “fake news”, which traditional media outlets with established fact checking processes are less prone to. Another significant shift is the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, which have transformed how people watch television and movies. Unlike traditional broadcast networks, these services offer on-demand content, allowing viewers to watch what they want, when they want. This shift has led to a decline in traditional TV viewership, with younger audiences increasingly turning to streaming platforms for their entertainment needs. The advertising industry has also evolved dramatically. Digital advertising now accounts for over 50% of all advertising spending globally, surpassing traditional methods like TV commercials and print ads. Advertisers are increasingly leveraging data analytics to target specific demographics, making digital ads more effective and personalized. Despite these changes, traditional media is not disappearing entirely. Instead, many organizations are adapting by integrating digital strategies. For example, newspapers like The New York Times have shifted their focus to digital subscriptions, while TV networks are launching their own streaming services. This hybrid approach suggests that the future of media may not be a replacement of old by new, but rather a coexistence where each platform leverages its unique strengths. 1.What is the primary reason for the decline of traditional media like newspapers and television? A.Increased production costs B.The rise of digital media and the internet C.Decreased interest in news and entertainment D.Government regulations on media companies 2.Which of the following is a challenge associated with social media as a news source? A.Faster distribution of news B.Spread of misinformation and fake news C.Increased engagement with content D.Higher quality of journalistic standards 3.What has contributed to the growth of streaming services? A.The decline of movie theaters B.The availability of on-demand content C.The increase in traditional TV viewership D.The decrease in internet speeds 4.How has the advertising industry adapted to media changes? A.By focusing solely on print advertisements B.By reducing overall advertising budgets C.By using data analytics for targeted ads D.By eliminating digital advertising 5.What strategy are traditional media companies using to remain relevant? A.Completely abandoning digital platforms B.Integrating digital strategies with their existing models C.Relying exclusively on government support D.Ignoring changes in consumer behavior 【答案】1.B 2.B 3.B 4.C 5.B 【导语】本文是说明文。 根据“The media landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past few decades ... Not only can you see his face and hear his voice, but you can also smell the cookies he has just baked. It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but could it actually happen? Smells are created by tiny particles called molecules (分子) that float through the air and reach your nose. Your nose then sends signals to your brain, which recognizes the smell. So, could your phone send smell molecules to you so that you know what it is? Think about how your phone screen works. It doesn’t have every color in the world stored inside it. Instead, it uses just three colors to create millions of different hues and shades. Now imagine something for smells. Scientists are developing digital scent (香味) technology that uses a number of different cartridges (盒;匣), each containing a specific scent. Just like how pixels (像素) mix red, green and blue to create images, these scent cartridges could mix to create different smells. Images on your phone are made of digital codes that represent mix of pixels, and smells are created in the same way. When you receive a digital scent code, your phone could mix tiny amounts of the different scents from the cartridges to create the desired smell. This mix would then be released through a small vent (通风口) on the phone, allowing you to smell it. With a few cartridges, your phone could create a large number of smells. Creating such a phone faces more challenges. One is designing a system that can produce thousands of different smells using a few cartridges. And phones will also need to sense scents near them and change those into digital codes, so your friends’ phones can send smells to you. The cartridges should also be easy to refill, and the chemicals in them be safe to breathe. Even though we’re not there yet, maybe one day you’ll be able to not only see and hear your friend’s birthday party over the phone, but also smell the candles they blew out. 1.How do people smell? Put the following sentences in the correct order. ①Tiny particles reach the nose.    ②The brain recognizes the smell. ③The nose sends signals to the brain.    ④Tiny particles float through the air. A.①④③② B.④①③② C.①③④② D.①③②④ 2.By mentioning how phone screens work, the writer tries to ________. A.compare technologies used in showing colours and sending smells B.explain the real possibility of making phones send smells C.show that it is easier to show colours on the screen D.introduce the powerful function of future phones 3.Which of the following correctly describes “cartridges”? A.Three cartridges are needed to make different scents. B.Cartridges are able to sense scents around the phones. C.Cartridges create smells according to the digital scent codes. D.Cartridges play the most important role in making smell phones. 4.Which of the following things CANNOT help people to smell with the phone? A.Pixels. B.A vent. C.Chemicals. D.Cartridges. 5.What can we infer from the passage? A.Pixel technology can be used directly to create digital scents. B.Only in science fiction movies can we see people use smell phones. C.Smell phones send digital scent codes to the brain to make us smell. D.A powerful system needs to be developed to make smell phones a reality. 【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 5.D 【导语】本文介绍了科学家正在研发的数字香味技术,未来手机可能通过混合不同香味盒中的气味来实现远程传递气味的功能。 1.细节理解题。根据“Tiny particles called molecules float through the air and reach your nose. AI technology has been used in many fields and is now playing an increasingly important role in matters of public interest. D.Cloud formation and precipitation. The media landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past few decades. A.Completely abandoning digital platforms B.Integrating digital strategies with their existing models C.Relying exclusively on government support D.Ignoring changes in consumer behavior One day you pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Is the Internet good or bad? It’s always a hot topic in our daily life. Different people may have different answers. Since the Internet came into being, it brought us pleasure and tears. Today, let’s take a look at some things that are disappearing as the Internet grows up. When modern people need to record some important things quickly, they don’t find a pen and a piece of paper to write, but to open their mobile phone or computer to record. As a result, it’s common for many people to “pick up the pen but forget words”. Perhaps, in a few years, will pen and paper disappear? As people more and more lose themselves in the online world, the real-looking photos disappear and you can only watch the beautiful pictures on the Internet. If one day you send a real (真实的) photo in your circle of friends, others will even think if it is a photo to make fun of. Now everyone can get digital (数字的) maps in a few seconds by using computers or mobile phones. They are easy and fast for users. Do you remember the last time to look at a paper map? After a busy day for the whole family, people used to watch TV together, share information and express feelings.
