单元综合检测(六)
(总分120分)
第一部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳
选项。
Interested in building a schoolyard habitat? Here's how to get
started.
Gather a team
中
Students can do a lot on their own,but you'll need adults for a
project this big.Get teachers, parents, and even the headmaster
interested.Don't forget the maintenance staff-they know more
about your school's yard than anyone else and can give you lots of
help.
Map your site
Which part of the schoolyard can you turn into a habitat? Is
there an unused corner of the playground? You'll need to make a
map of the area showing what is there now. Then you can figure out
how you want to change it.For that, you need a plan.
Plan a habitat
Here's what you'll need to make your area attractive to
wildlife.
Food:Plant flowers and trees. These provide foods for birds,
insects, and small animals. You can also add some feeders for birds.
Where possible, stick with native plants-wild plants that grow
naturally in your area. They need less care, which means less work
for you.
Water:A small pond,a bird bath,or even a dish of clean water
on the ground will attract birds.
Shelter:Trees make great escapes for birds.Tall grass and
weeds are home to insects and some birds.
Reach for resources
To make the habitat happen, you'll need lots of plants, seeds,
and other supplies. You'll also need to buy or borrow tools and
maybe even some heavy equipment. Now's the time to reach out for
donations.Start by asking your parent-teacher organization.Then go
to garden clubs, garden stores (they might give you a discount),
local government agencies,and businesses.If they can't donate
supplies or money, ask if they can donate workers!
Build your design
Now you can dig in.Set a date, and get growing!

in early November of 1942,my geology(地质学)class was
supposed to go on a field trip to see the mica mine(云母矿).
Although it rained, everyone showed up on time.I was the only girl
in the class. We all fit into two cars.
21
■
Near Deary,Mr.Tier, our teacher, went into a store to ask
about the direction, while townspeople looked at us with curiosity.
On the store owner's advice,we drove out into the hills for a few
miles. Then we left the cars.We were afraid they would get stuck in
the mud.
Eventually,we located the mine near the top of the mountain.
There was a very small hole, running about two or three hundred
feet into the mountainside. The passage (was so narrow that
we could touch both sides with our hands, and not tall enough to
allow us to stand up straight. The first boy held the torch;we took
hold of the backs of each other's coats,in a line, and followed him
in,ducking our heads.After getting in,we were disappointed
because it was not the mine our teacher was looking for.
The rain was coming down hard as we started back to the cars
to go home.Back at Deary,we went into a drugstore and stood
around its big heating stove to dry out.The clerk was a middle-aged
lady.Seeing our entirely wet hair and clothes, she handed each of us
a cup of hot water immediately and asked if there was anything
wrong with any of us.
Hiking eight miles in the rain had not reduced our interest at
all.We all felt we had a wonderful time, even if we didn't find the
mine.
4.Why did the class leave the cars halfway?
[A]Because their cars broke down in Deary.
[B]Because it was not easy to drive in the mud.

[c]The teacher was not professional enough.
[D]The author was not liked by her classmates.
C
Las Vegas in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known
to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that
there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never
laid on,played on or even stepped on.The grass is only there to look
nice.
Now,the city is asking the Nevada state legislature(立法机构)
to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America
to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets,in housing
developments and in office parks.
It is estimated that useless grass makes up 40%of all the grass
in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive.Grass needs four
times more water than dry climate plants like cactuses.By tearing
out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003,the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned
developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered
homeowners 30 for each square meter of grass they tear out.But
fewer people are now using the program.Water usage has increased
in southern Nevada by 9%since 2019.And last year,Las Vegas set
a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River
provides much of Nevada's drinking water. The river could lose more
water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be
reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las
Vegas if their communities do not accept them.Cynthia Campbell is
the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona.
"There might come a point when city restrictions get too severe
for some residents. They'll say that is the point of no return
for them,Campbell said."For some people,it's a pool.For some
people,it's grass..”
校本单元评估

9.What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003?
[A]Allowing planting grass before new houses.
[e]Encouraging the residents to tear out grass.
[c]Praising those who signed up for the program.
[D]Awarding those who reduced water usage.
10.What is implied in Campbell's words in the last paragraph?
[A]Many residents will never follow the ban.
[B]Influence and reaction from the reform will be different from
person to person.
[c]Other measures should be taken to protect water.
[D]Water officials should take many factors into consideration.
11.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
[A]Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass

Thanks to its cold environment,Antarctica remained largely
untouched by humans for thousands of years. However, since the
1990s,the last true wilderness on the planet is becoming an
increasingly popular destination for tourists. Now,a new study
shows that the visitors may be bringing harmful bacteria which
could reduce the area's native bird population.
Researchers believed that the Antarctic creatures were not
affected by the danger due to the continent's extreme weather.
However,microbiologist Marta Cerda-Cuellar didn't believe this
was true. She and some colleagues decided to examine samples from
Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste
was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds
22
themselves. This was no easy task.If they missed catching a skua at
first, the bird never came close again.
It took the scientists four years from 2008 to 2011,to collect
fecal (samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. The
results of their study showed the presence of several types of human
bacteria in the bird waste.
"While we should do as much as possible to reduce transmission
(传播),it's hard to believe that we can stop tourism and science at
these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won't continue
to transmit pathogens(病原体),”said Kyle Elliott.
Experts, including Gonzalez-Solis,believe the only way to
prevent the destruction of the birds,is to introduce stricter
regulations or,at least, obey the ones already in place. For
example, while the Antarctic Treaty states clearly visitors carry
their waste back home to protect the original environment, the
regulation is rarely obeyed.Hopefully, officials will take steps to
protect the easily injured birds as soon as possible.
12.What can be said about scientists finding the waste from the
birds?
[A]This was not an easy task.
[B]This proved their conclusion.
[c]Their tempers contributed a lot.
[D]They found polluted human bacteria.
13.How does Kyle Elliott feel when mentioning reducing tourism?
[A]Hopeful.
[B]Difficult.
[c]Possible.
[D]Delighted.
14.What's the author's suggestion to protect Antarctic birds?
[A]Make new strict rules.
[B]Take measures as soon as possible.
[c]Quit the Antarctic Treaty.
[D]Encourage officials to strengthen cooperation.
15.In which part of a newspaper is this text probably found?
[A]Technology.
[B]Life.
[c]Art.
[D]Nature.

respect to the natural world and how you approach the gardening
process.
●
17
Some people may think that a garden is no more than plants,
flowers, patterns and masses of color.Others are concerned about
中
using gardening methods that require less water and fewer fertilizers
()18.However,there are a number of other reasons that
might explain why you want to garden. One of them comes from our
earliest years.
ORecall your childhood memories
Our model of what a garden should be often goes back to
childhood.Grandma's rose garden and Dad's vegetable garden might
be good or bad,but that's not what's important.19-how
being in those gardens made us feel.If you'd like to build a powerful
bond with your garden, start by taking some time to recall the
gardens of your youth.20.Then go outside and work out a plan
to translate your childhood memories into your grown-up garden.
Have fun.
A.Know why you garden
B.Find a good place for your own garden
C.It's our experience of the garden that matters
D.It's delightful to see so many beautiful flowers
E.Still others may simply enjoy being outdoors and close to plants
F.You can produce that kind of magical quality in your own garden,
too
G.For each of those gardens, write down the strongest memory you
have

A meadow in bloom cannot be more appealing for British. The
swinging wild flowers at their peak show essence()of the season
and are perfect for recording with your video camera. But that is a
thing of the past.
Motorways,new towns,factories-Britain has 21 much
damage to its natural scenery, and every year more land of the
countryside is 22 to tall buildings. While no wildlife habitat has
escaped the23 of the developer's bulldozer(推土机),none has
24 a greater impact than the meadow.Around 95%of Britain's
meadows have 25 in the past 70 years.
The blooming meadow was a much-loved 26 of the English
countryside poetry for generations,as 27 to the summer as
white snow to the winter.Nowadays, scenes of a farmer's field full
of colorful wild flowers are more 28 to be seen on greeting cards
than on country roads in July.
Although expansion of cities has 29 England's green land,
the primary cause for the loss was the post-war trend of frequent
30 practice.These wildflower-rich habitats began to decrease
23
during wartime when traditionally managed grassland was 31 to
serve as farmland. The sowing of highly productive crops, such as
potato,32 the practice after the war.More of the grassland
was,therefore,gone forever.
In terms of biodiversity, the 33 of the habitat cannot be
overstated:a common old meadow can support around 150 different
plant species. Many of them are 34,since they flower for just a
few days in midsummer. An uncut meadow is also a 35 for
many of Britain's threatened birds to keep away from enemies.

Kay Day,an 87-year-old UK woman,loves elephants.But Day,
who suffers from dementia(痴呆),rarely leaves her nursing home
room and hasn't seen a real elephant for a really long time.
Until now.
Day is so fond of elephants that her room is full of elephant
photos and toys. She dreamed of seeing an elephant up close again
but never thought it would happen. On Wednesday,August 9,
2023,Day's dream became a reality after her nursing home took her
on a special trip to the Whipsnade Zoo.
24
■
The nursing home collected money to be able to realize Day's
dream."Day doesn't join in many activities and tends to spend quite
a lot of time alone, said the nursing home manager."So when we
sat and discussed wishes,we found out she would love to see an
elephant. When we found the Elephant Experience at Whipsnade and
contacted them,we said we should make her dream come true!"
Day was so excited about going to the zoo that she marked off
the days on her elephant-themed calendar.Day's carers telephoned
her family and asked them to come along on the trip to support her
on that exciting day.
Since the Whipsnade Zoo is a protection zoo that is working to
protect wildlife as well as connect people with nature, the staff runs
a lot of programs including various animal experiences and "Be a
Keeper'”days.
Day often told people around her that she would like to pet and
feed the elephants herself as she did many years before. And she said
that the elephants'trunks (are her favourite part of the huge
animals."It's such a wonderful feeling to have an elephant take some
food out of your hand, put it in his trunk, curl (it up and put
it in his mouth,"she told the reporter when she was interviewed.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
The day for going to the zoo finally came.
The moment arrived when Day was able to meet the elephants
up close.
