The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds. The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route — a l5-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddrig Leonardo. People have given Cao many nicknames, such as “fastest man in China” and “Chinese Spider-Man”. According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can differ every time due to its highly demanding and stressful nature. In this race, two climbers compete at the same time, and since it’s a sport that finishes within seconds, achieving success requires perfection. Athletes must have the right balance of focus, confidence and courage to take risks. “Keeping a level head is the key,” Cao said. “Everyone wants to win. But the more you want it, the more likely you’ll mess up. Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won’t do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight.” Cao went on to note, “You just have to find the right balance.” But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport. Cao took his first step into the world of climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids starting out, he mainly focused on bouldering (抱石岩) and lead climbing (先锋攀岩), doing well in both. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, Cao bad surgery after injuring his left arm in a competition. It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts. It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. “I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top.” said Cao. 4. What can we learn from the passage? A. Cao focused on bouldering and lead climbing at the age of 18. B. Cao is nicknamed ”fastest man in China” for creating a world record. C. Cao thinks speed climbing can be influenced by the tough natural environment. D. Cao is the first person in China to finish the speed climbing 15-meter-tall route within 5 seconds. 5. What does “keep a level head” mean in paragraph 4? A. Expect to win. B. Keep body balance. C. Keep the head up. D. Stay calm. 6. Why did Cao choose speed climbing? A. Speed climbing affects his body less. B. He did much better in speed climbing. C. He thought speed climbing was more attractive. D. It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing. 7. Which of the following can best describe Cao? A. Outgoing and confident. B. Brave and creative. C. Determined and strong-minded. D. Modest and curious. C Ehrman Crest Elementary and Middle School, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated its opening in August,2022. TIME magazine put the school on its yearly list of best inventions. The honor focused on Ehrman Crest’s inventive design. There are mathematical designs on the floors and big magnetic (磁化的) maps on the walls. Some classrooms connect to the outdoors. There’s also a garden. “We didn’t set out to be a best invention,” Seneca Valley School District superintendent Tracy Vitale said. “We set out simply to take the place of an 84- year- old building. That building needed too much work to be saved,” Vitale says, “so a decision was made to start fresh. We said, ‘This is our chance to build the school of the future.’ And that’s what we did.” After adults made decisions about basics, such as the budget and the number of classrooms needed, the architects (建筑师)met with students. Michael Corb is with the architecture company CannonDesign. “We really pushed hard on, ‘What do you imagine a new school to be?’ and ‘What kind of environment would you love to learn in?’” he explains. “We wanted students’ opinions on how the school should look and feel.” CannonDesign partnered with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on the project. Anne Fullenkamp, a director at the museum, said the design started with“ visioning sessions (设想会议)”, where kids could express their ideas. The kids were given a lot of strange materials for their designs. “The kids made it clear that the environment should be fun. The result is a school with all the excitement of a children’s museum. There are traditional classrooms, but there are also places for exploration and cooperation. Every space in this building is for learning,” Corb says. Ehrman Crest hopes that the physical space will have a positive influence on student achievement. “We built our dream school,” Vitale says. “I think the lessons learned here are ‘Be creative as adults’ and ‘Listen to children’. ” 8. Why was the school honored by TIME magazine? A. It has a very special design. B. It focused on many inventions. C. It has many outstanding students. D. It is considered the best school in Pittsburgh. 9. What final decision was made on the school building plan? A. To start the improvement of the old building. B. To make the new school the best invention ever. C. To build a school of the future. D. To protect the old building well. 10. What did Michael Corb value most about the school’s design? A. The space of classrooms. B. The materials used. C. The school’s size. D. Students’ ideas. 11. What is the main idea of the passage? A. An old building was replaced by a new school. B. Kids at a new school taught adults a lesson. C. Architects learned a lot from school children. D. Kids helped design a school of the future. D Around one million cuneiform tablets (楔形文字泥板) have been found worldwide, on which cuneiform — the oldest known form of writing — was carved. Deciphering (破译) those cuneiform tablets helps know about the incredible stories of men, women and children in the early period of history. However, they are heavily weathered and thus difficult to decipher. A new artificial intelligence (AI) software is now able to explain difficult-to-read texts. It was developed by a team from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Hubert Mara, a professor at MLU, and his research team came up with the idea of developing an AI system that applied 3D models. Instead of photos, the researchers first used 3D models of nearly 2,000 cuneiform tablets, including around 50 from a collection at MLU, achieving significantly more dependable results than previous methods. The new system deciphers characters better than previous methods. In principle, the AI system works along the same lines as OCR software, which turns the images of writing and text into machine-readable text. “OCR usually works with photographs. This is no problem for ink on paper. In the case of cuneiform tablets, however, things are more difficult because the lighting conditions greatly influence how well certain characters can be recognized,” explains Mara. The team trained the new AI software and did succeed in recognizing the symbols on the tablets. “We were surprised to find that our system works so well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered,” says Mara. The work by the researchers makes a major step forward in the study of ancient writing systems and opens up many new lines of scientific exploration. Up until now, it can only translate symbols from two languages. However, a total of twelve cuneiform languages are known to exist. In the future, the software could also help to decipher weathered inscriptions (碑文), for example in cemeteries, which are three-dimensional like cuneiform. 12. What do we-know about cuneiform tablets? A. They are greatly damaged over time. B. They record many prehistoric stories. C. They show big progress in writing. D. They are quite small in number. 13. What is special about the new AI system? A. It uses OCR software. B. It is based on 3D models. C. It can translate 12 languages. D. It can turn texts into symbols. 14. What impressed Mara during the research? A. The difficulty in saving cuneiform tablets. B. The discovery of a new writing system. C. The achievements in computer science. D. The effectiveness of the new AI system. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. 3D models are useful in researches B. OCR software deciphered cuneiform C. AI software helps read ancient symbols D. Scientists use AI to find cuneiform tablets 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We all know that fish tanks bring comfort and peace for adults—or at least, we are in a better mood after staring at our fish for a while.
