第一节
Dear foreign guests,
On behalf of the Student Union, I’d like to show the welcome from my school. It’s my great honor to give a reception to you.
As is known to all, Chinese painting and calligraphy are worldwide famous. Today, we are going to attend a Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition which is organized by my school. The two art forms are historical which can dates back to 5000 years ago. The artists just use two colors, black and white, to express the spirit of Chinese culture and give visitors a large space to imagine. Without doubt, it can be a good chance for you to know more about Chinese culture.
I sincerely hope that you will have a good time here.
Thank you.
第二节 (满分25分)
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

Sign language is the main way deaf people communicate. Since they can’t hear, talking to people can be tough. Fortunately, sign language interpreters step in to bridge this gap.
Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her first language, as her parents are deaf. “I pick up sign language before I could even talk,” she recalled. From a young age, Hao has been helping her parents and other deaf individuals communicate. In 2018, she became a sign language interpreter at a law company in Chongqing, assisting deaf clients in legal matters.
Since sign language has a smaller vocabulary, Hao often encounters complex legal terms that have no direct match. In such cases, she patiently breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. “For example, the phrase’ put out a fire’ is signed as’ a fire put out’ in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first,” Hao explained.
Besides hand gestures, facial expressions and mouth movements are essential components of sign language. They work together to accurately communicate messages and prevent misunderstandings. To ensure clarity in legal interpretations, Hao sometimes repeats a sentence two or three times for deaf individual. “I feel stressed at work because I worry about being misunderstood,” she admitted.
Part of Hao’s anxiety comes from the fact that sign language has regional “dialects”. The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. “For example, people in Inner Mongolia and Chongqing use different gestures for the word’ true’,” Hao explained. She believes that patience and compassion(同情) are essential to her work. “My parents are deaf, so I understand the challenges faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them,” Hao said.
24.What can be learned about Hao Shuxin?
A.She wants to learn more sign language dialects.
B.She hopes to be a successful lawyer in Chongqing.
C.She learned sign language when she was very small.
D.She communicates with others mainly by sign language.
25.What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A.The vocabulary of sign language is very large.
B.Sign language and Chinese have many similarities.
C.It is not easy to express legal terms in sign language.
D.It is hard for deaf people to understand the sign language.
26.What does the underlined word “clarity” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Clearness. B.Awareness. C.Kindness. D.Gentleness.
27.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Sign language is the first language of the deaf.
B.A sign language interpreter guards the silent world.
C.Sign language plays an important role in the legal field.
D.A sign language interpreter significantly changes other people’s life.
C
Those who had the pleasure of watching Benny Goodman at work saw a rather ordinary-looking man in rimless glasses and a conservative business suit; but they also saw a human being who could play the clarinet(单簧管) like no one before or since. This made Benny Goodman a unique individual.
Other Americans who have stood out from the flock include Joe DiMaggio, Beverly Sill, Ernest Hemingway and Jonas Salk. They, like Benny Goodman, were recognized and honored for no other reason than excellence.
It is doing something better than other people that makes us unique. Yet a surprising number of people still see individuality as a surface thing. They wear garish clothes, dye their hair strange colors and decorate their skin with tattoos to make some kind of social statement. But an ordinary guy who has dyed his hair purple or orange is nothing more than the same person with a funny-looking head.
The whole purpose of individuality is excellence. Those who invent, who improvise(即兴发挥), who know more about a subject than other people do, and who take something that doesn’t work and make it work––these people are the very soul of capitalism.
Charles Kettering didn’t like the idea of cranking a car to make it start, so he invented the electric starter. Henry Ford figured out the assembly-line technique and made it possible to mass-produce automobiles, and Elisha Otis, inventor of the elevator, indirectly created the city sky-line. These people understood that individualism means working at the top of one’s capacity.
The ones with the purple hair and the funky jewelry are just along for the ride, trying to be “different” and not knowing how to go about it.
The student who earns straight A’s on his report card has grasped the idea and has found the real meaning of individuality. So has the youngster who has designed his own spaceship, who gives piano recitals, who paints pictures of the world around him.
Benny Goodman understood it too. This is why he was at his best, blowing his clarinet, in a blue suit and black shoes.
28.The author mentions the appearance of Benny Goodman to _________.
A.show what a talented musician should look like
B.introduce an important figure in the musical world
C.contrast with his talent in music performance
D.indicate that he can’t stand out from the flock
29.The author would most probably agree that _________.
A.an individualist tends to seek difference both in character and appearance
B.the essence of individualism lies in pursuing excellence to the full
C.being different in appearance is the very first step to being individual
D.those who strive to win the recognition of others are real individualists
30.According to the passage, which individual’s actions may not truly embody the essence of individualism?
A.A scientist who conducts research solely advancing knowledge for the greater good rather than for personal recognition.
B.A social media influencer who conforms to popular opinions to maintain a large following.
C.An artist who creates unique works but fail to gain fame and recognition from others.
D.An entrepreneur who prioritizes ethical considerations over profit in his business practices.
31.For the main thread, the article is organized by way of __________.
A.specific to general B.cause and effect
C.examples and conclusion D.comparison and contrast
D
For patients with serious illness, a doctor, who understands and shares the feelings of patients, can make a huge difference. Psychologist Janine Westendorp studied the impact of communication in healthcare and emphasized the importance of showing support, even when there’s no cure available. She works at the Helen Dowling Institute, providing psychological support to cancer patients and their loved ones. From her experience, she noticed how patients often revisit what doctors said and how they said it. Poor communication, such as a rushed or inattentive conversation, can make patients feel helpless and unsupported.
Westendorp and her team reviewed 45 recorded discussions between doctors and women with incurable breast cancer. Patients filled out questionnaires before and after the discussions to assess their fears and what they remembered. The researchers also evaluated the doctors’ emotional connection using the NURSE acronym (naming, understanding, respecting, supporting, and exploring). They found that many doctors showed understanding, but there was room for improvement, especially in giving patients hope, even if a cure isn’t possible. For instance, doctors can offer hope about effective pain management or maintaining quality of life.
Westendorp also explored harmful communication. She identified four key issues: lack of personal information, lack of involvement in decision-making, not being seen or heard, and lack of continuity in care. Statements, like “There’s nothing more we can do for you” and “Your condition is too advanced for further treatment”, are particularly damaging. She stresses that doctors should always communicate ongoing support and care.
Although time pressure is a challenge for healthcare professionals, better communication doesn’t have to take much time. Simple statements like “We’re going to take good care of you” can ease patients’ anxiety and improve their experience. Westendorp believes investing time in building relationships with patients early on saves time in the long run.
32.Why is showing support important for seriously-ill patients?
A.It helps patients focus on their recovery process.
B.It contributes to patients feeling less helpless.
C.It prevents doctors from being overly stressed.
D.It improves the medical treatment outcome.
33.What can be learned about the NURSE acronym from Paragraph 2?
A.It refers to a nurse skills training method.
B.It is a doctor knowledge evaluation system.
C.It stands for a special type of cancer treatment.
D.It shows doctor-patient interaction points.
34.How does the author illustrate harmful communication according to Paragraph 3?
A.By presenting statistical data. B.By quoting from famous scholars.
C.By providing real-life stories. D.By giving examples of speaking.
35.What statement may the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A.Healthcare professionals should focus on quick treatments.
B.Early communication investment helps save time later.
C.Time pressure is a reason for professionals’ poor communication.
D.Simple statements do not ease patients’ anxiety.

How to Show Your Friends You Love Them
Psychologists have long thought that humans need meaningful social connections to survive. In fact, it’s connected to our mental and physical happiness. 36 . Here are some tips on how to strengthen the existing friendships in our lives.
Give them your skills and talents

Think about how good it feels to tell a friend you secretly like a trashy TV show and hear them answer “me too!” We feel a deeper connection to our friends when our vulnerability (脆弱) is met with support. It means they accept us for who we really are, the good and the bad.
Don’t sweep your disagreements under the rug (毯子)
40 . People often see them as something that’s supposed to be fun and lighthearted, or less formal than romantic or family relationships, so they downplay problems when they arise. But being able to deal with disagreements with friends in a healthy way can strengthen your friendships. Try talking about them.
A.Sing high praise for them
B.Say your struggles and joys
C.Tell them how much they mean to you

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us?

【原文】 W: Look at the first picture. It’s the London Tea Trade Centre. As you can see, it is on the north bank of the river Thames. It is the center of an important industry in the everyday lives of the British people. Tea is the British national drink: every man, woman, and child over ten years of age has on average over four cups a day or some 1,500 cups annually. Now, in the second picture you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Center before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea tasters before they’re sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work. Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on long tables. The tasters generally taste teas with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price for each tea.

Being generous (慷慨的) with your friends — sharing your time, attention or resources with them — is an easy way to keep your friendships. People want to be and stay friends with people who value them, and generosity is a way to express that. Think about what your skills and talents are. 37 .
Shower them with admiring
We often think of admiring as the sort of love we show in romantic relationships. But admiring is more than holding hands and kissing. It’s about communicating love and appreciation. There are many ways you can show love to your friends. 38 . Tell them when you think of them in passing. These simple acts provide a layer of safety in the relationship.
39
C.Tell them how much they mean to you
D.It can be scary to be open with our feelings
E.And find a way to turn that into a generous act
F.It’s hard to deal with disagreements in friendships
G.Knowing that we have people to care for us makes us feel confident
【答案】36.G 37.E 38.C 39.B 40.F

36.根据上文“Psychologists have long thought that humans need meaningful social connections to survive. In fact, it’s connected to our mental and physical happiness. (心理学家长期以来一直认为,人类需要有意义的社会关系才能生存。事实上,它与我们的身心幸福有关)”以及空后“Here are some tips on how to strengthen the existing friendships in our lives.(以下是一些关于如何加强我们生活中现有友谊的建议)”可知,空处进一步说明人类需要有意义的社会关系——人和人之间的友谊——的原因。G项“知道有人关心我们会让我们感到自信”符合语境,G项中的“have people to care for ”和下文中的“the existing friendships ”相呼应。故选G。
37.根据上文“Being generous (慷慨的) with your friends — sharing your time, attention or resources with them — is an easy way to keep your friendships. (慷慨地对待你的朋友——与他们分享你的时间、注意力或资源——是保持友谊的简单方法)”以及“Think about what your skills and talents are. (人们希望与重视他们的人成为朋友,并与他们保持友谊,慷慨是表达这一点的一种方式。想想你的技能和天赋是什么)”可知,前文说明我们需要和朋友分享我们的时间,注意力等,然后想想你有什么天赋和技能,这就说明空处需要解释为什么需要这些技能和天赋能——我们可以利用这些天赋和技能去帮助我们巩固友谊。E项“想办法把它变成一种慷慨的行为”符合语境。E项中的that指代前文中的skills and talents。故选E。
38.根据空前“There are many ways you can show love to your friends. (有很多方法可以向你的朋友表达爱)”以及空后“Tell them when you think of them in passing.(当你想到他们时,告诉他们)”可知,空处是在陈述向你的朋友表达爱的方式。C项“告诉他们他们对你有多重要”符合语境。故选C。
39.根据“It means they accept us for who we really are, the good and the bad.(这意味着他们接受我们的真实身份,好的和坏的)”可知,本段主要讲述只有当朋友接受我们的优点,也接受了我们缺点,我们的友谊才能巩固。B项“说出你的挣扎和喜悦”适合作本段的小标题。故选B。

Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

【答案】
