Imagine being told that you will never walk again! That was what doctors told the world-famous gymnast (体操运动员) Kieran Behan after they removed a cancerous tumor (肿瘤) from his leg when he was only ten years old. The operation went so badly that he woke up crying in terrible pain. Up to then, he had been crazy about gymnastics and was determined to become an Olympic champion. But how could he do that when he could not even walk now and was sitting in a wheelchair?
Kieran was going to show them and he started on the long road to recovery. He was 15 months in a wheelchair but he kept on exercising and was back in the gym. But within a few months he fell from the high bar and suffered a serious head injury, which caused frequent blackouts. Thus, he missed a whole year at school but the gym was beckoning (召唤) again. This time though, he had to overcome the challenges of that awful injury and getting back his balance. He returned to school using a walking stick but was cruelly laughed at by his classmates.
It took him three years to get back to where he had been before he injured his head. But unfortunately, he then suffered more injuries. Even just after he had been chosen for the European Championships, his knee was broken. Behan has said that was when he was about to give up.
But he never gave up and finally succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup floor champion in 2011, and his greatest moment of honor was when he attended the London 2012 Olympics. He had become an Olympic athlete after being through such sufferings. He is really a glorious example of the Olympic spirit.

Stephen Hawking’s final fear was that DNA manipulation would lead to a master race of superhumans. The physicist, who died aged 76 in March, 2018, thought the development could destroy the rest of human beings. His last prediction is revealed in a new book of his collected articles and essays called Brief Answers to Big Questions.
Hawking feared rich people would soon be able to edit their children’s DNA to improve attributes like memory and disease immunity. And he said that would pose a crisis for the rest of the world even if politicians tried to illegalize the practice. In an extract (摘录) published by The Sunday Times, he wrote: “I am sure that during this century people will discover how to modify both intelligence and instincts such as aggression. “Laws will probably be passed against genetic engineering with humans. But some people won’t be able to resist the temptation to improve human characteristics, such as memory, resistance to disease and length of life.” And he said that would cause huge problems for humans who have not undergone the same process, leaving them unable to compete. The professor even warned it could lead to the extinction of humanity as we know it. He said of normal humans: “Presumably they will die out, or become unimportant. Instead, there will be a race of self-designing beings who are improving at an ever-increasing rate.” The Brief History of Time author also refers to techniques like Crispr, which enables scientists to modify harmful genes and add in others. And although such procedures could be a boost for medical science, some critics are worried that they could cause a eugenics-style (优生方式) movement, where the weak are weeded out of society.
The new book, published by Hodder & Stoughton on Tuesday, also collects his writings on what he thought were the big questions facing science and wider society. In it, he examines whether aliens exist, colonize space and whether humans will ever go beyond our Solar System.

When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to The Times.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this ... They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen. Wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how heartbreaking, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.
32.What has led to a heated media discussion?
A.Some penguins sufferıngs ın a gully. B.People’s various opinions on penguins.

B.When the animal is in a man-made danger.
C.When the animal is trapped in a natural disaster.
D.When the situation involves a predator hunting its food.
35.What can be the best title for the text?

When Ms. Chow announced the coming “Battle of the Books”, we were so excited. She said, “You’re going to be in teams of three, and you’ll need to set a reading goal for your team. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”
That sounded pretty good to me. Wyatt turned to me, saying, “Teammates?”
“Oh, sure!” I said. Wyatt and I liked a lot of the same books, so we could set a goal like reading every graphic novel (漫画小说) in a series.
The lunch bell sounded before Ms. Chow could explain any more rules. Liya came to our desk and said “Teammates?” to Wyatt and me.
“Yeah, teammates!” Wyatt and I answered happily. Liya could read super-fast in both Hindi and English. If we set a goal like reading books by authors from different countries, she could help the team for sure.
Over lunch, we discussed what we needed to do for the contest (竞赛) when Kash came to us.“Do you have ideas for us?”I asked him.
Kash said, “Why would I give you guys ideas? I’ll save them for my team. ”
“Kash, come on, ”I said. “It’s teams of three. Wyatt and Liya said something to me first. If you had, then it would be different. ”
“I see how I rank (属于某等级) in the friendship lineup, ”Kash said angrily, and left.
We were very surprised, but we understood him. The four of us always did things together. I felt the only way to fix this was to allow four people on a team.
So, in the afternoon we went to see Ms. Chow. Guess what? She told us she was going to draw names to assign random groups (随机分配组).
As we walked out of the office, we became silent. We knew even if Ms. Chow had let us form a four-person group, Kash knew we had first teamed up without him. We knew we wouldn’t be able to enjoy any prize if one of our best friends felt bad about being left out. What could we do to clear up this misunderstanding?

Dear Tom,
Thanks a lot for your inviting me to take part in the volunteer work in the nursing home this Saturday morning. But I am terribly sorry to tell you that I can’t participate in it as planned. I have just found that I have to attend an important class meeting during that period. I hope the change will not cause you too much trouble.
Shall we go on this Sunday morning? We can set out early so that we’ll have more time to prepare for the show. If it’s convenient for you, let’s meet at 8:30 outside the school gate. If not, let me know what time suits you best. I should be available at any time after school this month.
Sorry again for the inconvenience caused by my absence.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
That night as I read a graphic novel, I had an idea. I think I did something wrong about it. I felt greatly guilty. He was my best friend and I shouldn’t have ruined my friendship with Kash because of the game. So I wanted to give Kash a copy of my favorite comic book and invite Kash to join our group. In the comic book, I wrote a letter in which I reflected what Kash and I had experienced together. We helped each other read and grow together, which left us a lot of wonderful memories during the school days.
At the beginning of the next day, I handed the pages to Kash in an envelope. I bowed my head in embarrassment, not daring to meet Kash’s eyes. I felt so nervous that my whole body was shaking. Wyatt and Liya also fell into silence and had no idea how to deal with it. Moments later, Kash opened the envelope and read the letter I had written to her. With the tears slowly flowing down, suddenly, Kash said happily:“ I forgive you, I think we can be friends forever! ” The four of us just hugged each other and applauded our friendship. Of course, in this activity, we successfully won the first place, and more importantly, we once again gained friendship.

W: Yes, but I’m good at that.
M: You’re lucky. There’s so much to remember studying law!

24.What can we infer about Kieran Behan in the first paragraph?
A.He was a famous gymnast when he was ten.
B.He was unable to walk after the operation.
C.He lost one leg because of the operation.
D.He decided to give up gymnastics.
25.How long did it take Kieran to stand up again after the cancer operation?
A.A few months. B.Fifteen months. C.One year. D.Three years.
26.What happened after Kieran was chosen for the European Championships?
A.He totally lost heart. B.He hurt his head. C.He broke his knee. D.He was laughed at by others.
27.Which words best describe Kieran Behan?
A.Unfortunate but smart. B.Talented but weak. C.Curious and positive. D.Brave and determined.
【答案】24.B 25.B 26.C 27.D
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。本文主要介绍了体操运动员Kieran Behan虽经历种种病痛和磨难却仍坚持追求梦想最终取得成功的故事。
24.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“But how could he do that when he could not even walk now and was sitting in a wheelchair”(但是,当他现在甚至不能走路,坐在轮椅上时,他怎么能做到这一点呢?)可知,手术后他不能走路。故选B项。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“He was 15 months in a wheelchair but he kept on exercising and was back in the gym.”(他在轮椅上坐了15个月,但他继续锻炼,回到了健身房。)可知,他在轮椅上度过了15个月,由此推断他是术后15个月才重新站起来。故选B项。
26.细节理解题。由文章第三段“Even just after he had been chosen for the European Championships, his knee was broken.”(就在他被选入欧洲锦标赛之后,他的膝盖就裂了。)可知,他当时伤到了膝盖。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“But he never gave up and finally succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup floor champion in 2011, and his greatest moment of honor was when he attended the London 2012 Olympics. He had become an Olympic athlete after being through such sufferings. He is really a glorious example of the Olympic spirit.”(但他从未放弃,最终在2011年成功成为挑战世界杯场地冠军,他最伟大的荣誉时刻是参加2012年伦敦奥运会。
C
28.Stephen Hawking’s views don’t include _________.
A.DNA manipulation could lead to the extinction of human beings.
B.There exist techniques to modify harmful genes and add in good genes.
C.People cannot resist the temptation to improve human characteristics.
D.Humans who haven’t undergone genetic engineering may die out.
29.Which one is the hook published by Hodder & Stoughton?
A.Brief Answers to Questions. B.The Sunday Times.
C.The Brief History of Time. D.Solar System.
30.What’s Stephen Hawking’s attitude towards human genetic engineering?
A.Supportive. B.Impartial. C.Favorable. D.Concerned.
31.What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A.Crispr can enable scientists to get harmful genes changed.
B.DNA manipulation will create a master race of superhumans.
C.Humans will colonize space and go beyond our Solar System.
D.DNA manipulation may lead to the extinction of human beings.
【答案】28.C 29.A 30.D 31.D
【导语】这是一篇说明文。物理学家斯蒂芬·霍金去世前的最后担忧是:操纵DNA将催生超级人类优等种族,他认为这一发展趋势可能会毁灭人类。
28.细节理解题。根据第二段第四句“But some people won’t be able to resist the temptation to improve human characteristics, such as memory, resistance to disease and length of life.”可知是some people而不是people,故C选项以偏概全,不是霍金的观点。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句中“The new book published by Hodder & Stoughton on Tuesday”使用了定冠词the可知是对应上文第一次提到的a new book of his collected articles and essays called Brief Answers to Big Questions,故Brief Answers to Big Questions 是由Hodder & Stoughton 出版的,A选项正确; The Sunday Times是霍金曾经在上面发表过文章的报刊,故B选项排除;The Brief History of Time是霍金之前的书,故排除C选项;Solar System不是书,D选项不正确。故综上选A。
30.观点态度题。从文章第一段第一句“Stephen Hawking’s final fear was that DNA manipulation would lead to a master race of superhumans.”;第二段第二句“And he said that would pose a crisis for the rest of the world even if politicians tried to illegalize the practice.”;与第二段中“The professor even warned it could lead to the extinction of humanity as we know it.”
文章中没有提及,排除C选项;从文章的第一段第二句“The physicist, who died aged 76 in March, 2018, thought the development could destroy the rest of human beings.”可知操纵DNA可能会导致人类灭绝,故选D。
D
C.The rescue of penguins from a gully. D.Ways of filming the series Dynasties.
33.What’s David Attenborough’s attitude towards human interference?
A.Supportive. B.Unfavorable. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
34.According to Paul Nicklen, when should humans NOT interfere with wildlife?
A.When the animal is a race species.
B.When the animal is in a man-made danger.
C.When the animal is trapped in a natural disaster.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
That night as I read a graphic novel, I had an idea.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At the beginning of the next day, I handed the pages to Kash in an envelope.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】

24.What can we infer about Kieran Behan in the first paragraph?

D.When the situation involves a predator hunting its food.
35.What can be the best title for the text?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为 150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
That night as I read a graphic novel, I had an idea.
