From Disappointment to Purpose
I’m known for my determination. If I want something, I go for it. Over the years this 1 has worked well for me and helped me achieve my goals. When I wanted to be on the dance team at school, I learned all the dances and practiced until I could hardly 2 .
But this year everything changed. I had set my sights on a summer 3 that I was determined to get at the Water Zone, because the employees there could go on the water rides after their work and get free food at the snack bar. It was the 4 job to have on hot summer vacations. So just as I had achieved every goal in the past, I set out to 5 the job. I was certain that nothing could keep me from my dream job.
After my 6 , the manager of the Water Zone told me that he could hire only those with experience in water safety. I felt like a failure.
On the last weekend before school ended, my teacher, Mrs. Keller, asked me whether I would be interested in the kids’ summer day camp. I decided that I had nothing to 7 , so I called the manager. She was 8 by my babysitting experience and employed me. In less than a week, I had completely forgotten about wanting work at the water park. Each time I comforted a little boy who missed his mother or a little girl who needed to help tying her shoes, I felt I was doing something 9 . I realized that I had discovered my life’s purpose: to work with children. I now have a new goal.
Sometimes in life we don’t get exactly what we want. It’s natural to feel 10 . But, occasionally, when we don’t get what we want, something even better is waiting for us around the corner!

As Miller defines it, hope is not a naive approach to seeing the world, where we ignore problems and engage in “wishful thinking”. Instead, hope is a complex response, 11 (involve) “feeling, thought, action, vision, a life force, and a way of seeing or being”. Having hope, as opposed to living in fear, he argues, helps us to see possibility in present-day circumstances and not become overwhelmed. People who feel hopeful are good problem-solvers, more engaged and productive at work, more 12 (create) and adaptable, and better at recovering from adversity. For these reasons and others, inputting more hope into ourselves means we 13 (equip) to handle problems more smoothly.

“There is no way I can live out of a suitcase!” I thought as we packed up our home in Venice, Italy. At fourteen years old, I couldn’t imagine leaving my friends, school, and all my “stuff” behind to travel the world full-time with my family. That was when my mom had the idea of dropping everything to travel the world and create a deeper connection between family members. Although I absolutely loved the idea of traveling the world freely, I couldn’t imagine leaving my life behind.
To my surprise, during the travel, we have learned the most important moments are when we live happy moments with our family and friends. As we travel, we barely carry anything with us except the essential things like clothes, a laptop, notebooks, and toiletries (洗漱用品). We each carry a backpack and all five of us share two suitcases for clothes. After buying new souvenirs or new clothes, we give some of our old outfits away to people in need and it makes us so happy to be able to give back wherever we can.
At the beginning, it was difficult for us to get used to never having a closet (衣橱), constantly changing hotel rooms, and never fully unpacking before we were back on the road. But over time we have learned to appreciate the value of having less — the freedom to live for experiences and the joy of traveling “light” in mind, body, and spirit. Many of the wonderful new friends we have made on our journey have opened our eyes to how lucky we are. We have met families in many parts of the world who live in small homes with no running water, yet they always have huge smiles and are willing to share with us.
We now know that experiences and memories are the most valuable things in life and that they can only be acquired when we let go of our need for possessions and focus on what really matters in life — enjoying our lives each day with the people we love.
24.What was the author’s initial feeling about the idea of traveling the world?
A.Anxious and fearful. B.Interested but doubtful.
C.Pleased and excited. D.Confused but hopeful.
25.Why did the author’s mom decide to travel the world?
A.To build stronger family bonds. B.To escape their current life.
C.To enrich their travel experiences. D.To ease the work pressure.
26.What did the family do with their old clothes after acquiring new ones?
A.They directly threw them away. B.They kept them as souvenirs.
C.They donated them to people in need. D.They exchanged them with local residents.
27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.We should let go of every single possession.
B.Material wealth and possessions bring happiness.
C.The family used to place too much emphasis on wealth.
D.Material possessions should not be our ultimate goal.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.C 27.D

26.细节理解题。根据第二段中“After buying new souvenirs or new clothes, we give some of our old outfits away to people in need and it makes us so happy to be able to give back wherever we can.(在买了新的纪念品或新衣服后,我们会把一些旧衣服送给有需要的人,能够在任何地方回馈他人让我们非常开心)”可知,作者一家在获得新衣服后,会把旧衣服捐赠给有需要的人。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We now know that experiences and memories are the most valuable things in life and that they can only be acquired when we let go of our need for possessions and focus on what really matters in life — enjoying our lives each day with the people we love.(我们现在知道,体验和记忆是生活中最有价值的东西,只有当我们放下对物质的需求,专注于生活中真正重要的事情——与我们所爱的人一起享受每一天的生活时,我们才能获得它们)”可知,体验和记忆是生活中最有价值的东西,物质财富不应是我们的终极目标。故选D项。
C
The Power of a Smile
In a world where technology has become an integral part of our lives, it's easy to forget the simple pleasures that come from human interaction. One such pleasure is the power of a smile. A smile is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. It is a simple yet powerful gesture that can change the mood of a room, brighten someone's day, and even improve one's own mental well-being.
The science behind smiling is fascinating. When we smile, our brain releases endorphins (内啡肽), which are natural mood elevators. These endorphins help to reduce stress and create a sense of happiness and relaxation. Moreover, smiling can also be contagious. Studies have shown that when one person smiles, it can trigger a response in others to smile as well, creating a positive feedback loop.
However, in today's fast-paced world, people often forget to smile. The hustle and bustle of daily life can leave us feeling stressed and disconnected from others. But it's important to remember that a smile can be a powerful tool for connection. It can break the ice in social situations, ease tension in difficult conversations, and even help to build trust and rapport.
In addition to its social benefits, smiling also has health benefits. Regular smiling can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and even improve one's physical appearance. It's a natural anti-aging remedy that can make one look younger and more approachable.
So, the next time you're feeling overwhelmed or disconnected, try smiling. It might just be the small act that makes a big difference in your day and the days of those around you. Remember, the power of a smile is not just a saying — it's a scientifically proven fact.
28.What is the main idea of the article?
A.The importance of technology in our lives.
B.The universal language of a smile and its benefits.
C.The negative effects of a fast-paced lifestyle.
D.The role of endorphins in reducing stress.
29.According to the article, what happens in our brain when we smile?
A.We feel more stressed.
B.Our blood pressure increases.
C.We release chemicals that elevate our mood.
D.We become more prone to illness.
30.Why can smiling be considered contagious?
A.Because it's a cultural norm.
B.Because it's a natural anti-aging remedy.
C.Because it's a sign of good health.
D.Because it triggers a response in others to smile as well.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D

D
I watch documentaries, not movies. I read history books, not fiction. I use every free moment to accomplish one of the tasks on my never-ending checklist, and I am completely filled with thoughts of productivity. An hour sleeping is an hour wasted. And like the rest of 21st century America, I like it. But this fixation on productivity is increasingly destroying character and transforming men into robots.
New York Times columnist David Brooks warned American University students of this cultural decline in a speech. “We cut off all things spiritual and emotional in a competitive urge to stand out”, he said, “The pressure to succeed professionally, to acquire skills, to do the things you need to do to succeed in an information age economy really became the overwhelming(难以应付的)pressures, and it sort of weakens the thinking about character and morality.”
Many students happily go to college, viewing it as a next step on their rise to professional achievement. Forcing as many success-building activities into their schedules as they can, they enjoy keeping busy with little sleep. “Today’s outstanding kids are likely to spend their afternoons and weekends shuttling from one skill-improving activity to the next,” Brooks wrote in an article, “We fear failure more than we desire success.”
A century ago, college was about character building. Today, our characters are in decline. We are experts on economics, material things and professional skills. We fail to discuss and understand relationships, emotions and all things spiritual.
Philosopher Karl Popper divided the world into two categories: Clocks and Clouds. Clock problems are those that can be taken apart, examined and solved through deductive reasoning(演绎推理). Clouds cannot be taken apart. Cloud problems represent whole systems that need to be understood in a different way.
“When we have a Cloud problem, we try to turn it into a Clock problem,” Brooks said. And in a reason-centered culture, adding titles to one’s resume becomes a trend. At American University, 85 percent of seniors (and 89 percent of business majors) graduate with at least one practical experience which is often helpful to a student’s future career, but can sometimes draw focus away from academics.
To prevent the death of man’s character, Brooks urges rediscovering our human natures through falling in love. And by love he means love for a task, job, or another person. “Synchronicity is key to happiness,” he said. Rather than crazily increasing our long lists of accomplishments, we need to lose ourselves in what we do, and success will come on its own.
31.From Paragraph 1, we can learn that people ________.
A.are controlled by time B.are eager to achieve
C.are changing their characters D.are keen on reading books more
32.What is the author’s attitude towards colleges that existed a century ago?
A.Tolerant. B.Uncertain. C.Approving. D.Curious.
33.The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.success comes from devotion to work
B.the focus on human natures counts
C.more work contributes to happiness
D.love is more important than focus
34.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.criticize students’ desire for achievements

Time Management
What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s very likely that you can find out. 35 ; there may be clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard (仪表板).
36 even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby. Humans have an internal clock that regulates the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.
37 . Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “Who’s in charge?” 38 . Or we can take control of it and make it our partner.
By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests.
The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. 39 . Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.
A.We are the master of time
B.Your body keeps its own beat
C.You can find timepiece everywhere
D.There may be a watch on your wrist
E.Time is something from which we can’t escape
F.Instead, the aim is to inform us how we use time
G.We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy
【答案】35.D 36.B 37.E 38.G 39.F
【分析】这是一篇议论文。文章主要讲述了时间通过时间管理让时间成为我们的朋友,并介绍了管理好时间的重要性与好处。
35.下文there may be clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard(或许墙上、桌子上或电脑屏幕上有时钟;也或许你正在开的车的仪表盘上有时钟)与D. There may be a watch on your wrist(你手腕上或许有一只手表)承接自然,上下文形式明显的并列结构,而且话题一致,clock是关键词,故选D项。
36.下文even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby. (即使你身边没有某种钟表)与B. Your body keeps its own beat(你的身体保持自己的节奏)承接自然,因为身体有自己的节奏,所以即使身边没有钟表它也会有规律地自动运转,故选B项。
37.下文Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour.(即使我们忽略它,它仍然在滴答走着,一秒一秒,一分钟一分钟,一小时一小时)与E. Time is something from which we can’t escape(时间是我们不能逃避的东西)承接自然,escape和ignore是关键词,故选E项。
38.下文Or we can take control of it and make it our partner.(或者我们可以控制它,让它成为我们的伙伴)与G. We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy(我们可以让时间流逝,让它成为我们的敌人)承接自然,上下文构成明显的并列关系,都讲述了对时间的控制,let和make是关键词,故选G项。
39.上文The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of timetable that governs every waking moment of the day.(时间管理的目的不是安排每一个时刻,然后成为支配着一天中每一个醒着时刻的时间表的奴隶) F. Instead, the aim is to inform us how we use time(相反,它的目的是告诉我们如何使用时间)承接自然,上下文构成明显的转折关系,aim是关键词,故选F项。
第三部分 书面表达(共两节, 32分)
第一节(共4小题; 第40、41题各2分, 第42题3分, 第43题5分, 共12分)
阅读下面短文, 根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
I was sitting in math class; my teacher, Mrs. Gratz, was trying to get the attention of everyone arriving before the bell that would start the fourth period. As most of my classmates sat down and waited for our teacher to begin the lesson, a student walked in right after the bell rang. He was a real troublemaker. It was painfully obvious to anyone who knew him that he didn’t care much about school or authority. He continued walking through the classroom, sat down next to one of his friends and began talking loudly with him. At this point our teacher had attempted to quiet everyone down several times, succeeding with just about everyone except for him. By him arguing with a teacher for seemingly no reason and causing a scene, I could see on my teacher’s face that she was getting more and more upset as time went on, because her class time was being wasted.
It’s important to present yourself in a positive way to people that can have an effect on your life. Parents, police officers, teachers. Those in positions such as these are the ones who should be respected most, even if you don’t think so. Watching a young man argue back and forth with a teacher, a person of authority, taught me a valuable lesson about how to act when in a situation like this. If you disagree with someone, you should find the proper time and place to deal with it. Truly, the time for wasting time is not during school hours and the place for disrupting (扰乱) a teacher’s lesson is not in school itself.
I try to respect all figures of authority, especially when they treat the people under them fairly and with equal respect. Back in this 7th grade, this event changed my life, and that’s the reason why I still remember and learn from it to this day. Sitting in class and listening to the teacher every day can get boring, but it is also worth quieting down for, because of what you can take away from the class, and what you can gain from just showing some respect.
40.Use one word to describe the student who walked in right after the bell rang? (不多于 1 个单词)
41.What examples does the writer give to show who should be respected most? (不多于 4 个单词)
42.When should a student deal with a problem he/she has with a teacher? (不多于 4 个单词)
43.What is the main idea of the passage? (单词数不限)
【答案】40.Impolite. / Rude. / Troublesome. 41.Parents, police officers, teachers. 42.Not during school hours. 43.Respect all figures of authority. / Show respect to authorities.
根据第一段中“He was a real troublemaker. It was painfully obvious to anyone who knew him that he didn’t care much about school or authority. He continued walking through the classroom, sat down next to one of his friends and began talking loudly with him. (他真是个捣蛋鬼。认识他的人都痛苦地意识到,他不太在乎学校或权威。他继续穿过教室,坐在他的一个朋友旁边,开始大声地和他说话)”可知,上课铃声一响走进来的那个学生非常没有有礼貌,爱制造麻烦。故答案为Impolite. / Rude. / Troublesome.
41.考查细节理解。根据第二段“It’s important to present yourself in a positive way to people that can have an effect on your life. Parents, police officers, teachers. Those in positions such as these are the ones who should be respected most, even if you don’t think so. (以一种积极的方式向那些对你的生活有影响的人展示自己是很重要的。家长,警察,老师。在这些职位上的人是最应该受到尊重的人,即使你不这么认为)”可知,作者认为在生活中最应该受到尊重的人是家长,警察,老师。故答案为Parents, police officers, teachers.
42.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“If you disagree with someone, you should find the proper time and place to deal with it. Truly, the time for wasting time is not during school hours and the place for disrupting (扰乱) a teacher’s lesson is not in school itself.(如果你不同意别人的意见,你应该找到适当的时间和地点来处理它。的确,浪费时间不应在课堂上,扰乱老师讲课的场所也不在学校。)”可知,作者认为学生不应在上课时间处理与老师之间的问题,这样会浪费别人的时间。故答案为Not during school hours.
Respect all figures of authority./Show respect to authorities.

A.are controlled by time
B.are eager to achieve
C.are changing their characters
D.are keen on reading books more
32.What is the author’s attitude towards colleges that existed a century ago?
A.Tolerant. B.Uncertain. C.Approving. D.Curious.
33.The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.success comes from devotion to work
B.the focus on human natures counts
C.more work contributes to happiness
D.love is more important than focus
34.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.criticize students’ desire for achievements
B.stress the importance of productivity
C.warn about the pressure to seek success
D.bring awareness to character building

(不多于 4 个单词)

A.are controlled by time
B.are eager to achieve
C.are changing their characters
D.are keen on reading books more
32.What is the author’s attitude towards colleges that existed a century ago?
A.Tolerant. B.Uncertain. C.Approving. D.Curious.
33.The last paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.success comes from devotion to work
B.the focus on human natures counts
C.more work contributes to happiness
D.love is more important than focus
34.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.criticize students’ desire for achievements
B.stress the importance of productivity
C.warn about the pressure to seek success
D.bring awareness to character building
