Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. distinct B. rescue C. advocate D. temporary E. uncommon F. exhibit G. intense H. comments I. assess J. responses K. initial Phases of a crisis Disaster survivors normally experience a range of psychological and physiological reactions, the strength and type of which depend on several factors: • Prior experience with the same or a similar event. • The intensity of the disruption. • The length of time that has elapsed between the event occurrence and the present. • Individual feelings that there is no escape, which sets the stage for panic. • The emotional strength of the individual. Survivors’ reactions may become more ____21____ as the amount of disruption to their lives increases. That is, the more the survivors’ lives are disrupted, the greater their psychological and physiological reactions may become. Some research studies have indicated that survivors go through ____22____ emotional phases following a disaster: In the impact phase, survivors do not panic and may, in fact, show no emotion. They do what they must to keep themselves and their families alive. In the inventory phase, which immediately follows the event, survivors ____23____ damage and try to locate other survivors. During this phase, routine social ties tend to be abandoned in favor of the more functional relationships required for ____24____ response activities such as search and rescue and emergency medical operations. In the ____25____ phase, emergency services personnel, including CERTs, are responding and survivors are willing to take their directions from these groups without protest. They ____26____ a sense of trust that their rescuers will address their needs and that they can then put their lives together quickly. This is why CERT identification, such as helmets and vests, is important. In the recovery phase, however, survivors may believe that rescue efforts are not proceeding quickly enough. That feeling, combined with other emotional stressors (for example, dealing with insurance adjusters and having to find ____27____ living accommodations), may cause survivors to pull together against their rescuers. As CERT members, you should expect that survivors will show psychological effects from the impact of the event and that, at some point, some degree of psychological warfare will be directed toward you. You should expect to see a range of responses that will vary from person to person. You should not, however, take the survivors’ ____28____ and actions personally. Children also may experience psychological or physical upset following a disaster. These feelings may not last long, but it is not ____29____ to have disturbing reactions many months after the event. It is important to remember that emotional ____30____ apply to both disaster victims and rescue personnel. Be alert to signs of disaster trauma in yourself and coworkers, and take steps to alleviate stress. Also, incorporate stress-relieving elements (exercise, rest, good nutrition) into your everyday life to better prepare yourself for disaster situations. 【答案】21. G 22. A 23. I 24. K 25. B 26. F 27. Both “glocal” and “global” segments will grow in the medium term, but the “glocal” one is expected to grow at a ____38____ pace due to a greedy appetite for foreign education, and expanding middle-class in emerging economies and technological innovation. On the other hand, the “global” segment will grow at a slower pace due to a shift in institutional ____39____ or self-funded students at undergraduate level and the increasing cost and competition for recruiting international students. Transnational educational models also face several growth problems, including qualitative challenges _____40_____ from credential issues with MOOCs to regulatory and funding complexity with branch campuses, which may _____41_____ influence the expectations of “glocal” students and therefore growth. Of course, not all international students can be boxed into this framework. However, the intention is to provide a broad framework for institutions to _____42_____ the shift that is occurring in the competitive landscape and to help them make the best strategic choices. _____43_____ the dynamics of international student mobility are changing with the growth of transnational education _____44_____ in new student segments and behavior. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. A Seventeenth-century houses in colonial North America were simple structures that were primarily functional, carrying over traditional designs that went back to the Middle Ages. During the first half of the eighteenth century, however, houses began to show a new elegance. As wealth increased, more and more colonists built fine houses. Since architecture was not yet a specialized profession in the colonies, the design of buildings was left to carpenters who undertook to interpret architectural manuals imported from England. There are an astonishing number of these handbooks for builders in colonial libraries, and the houses erected during the eighteenth century show their influence. Most domestic architecture of the first three-quarters of the eighteenth century displayed a wide range of taste and freedom of application of the rules laid down in these books. Increasing wealth throughout the colonies resulted in houses of improved design, whether the material was wood, stone or brick. New England still favored wood, though brick houses became common in Boston and other towns, where the danger of fire forced people to use more durable material. A few houses in New England were built of stone, but only in Pennsylvania and its neighboring areas was stone widely used in dwellings. An increased use of bricks is noticeable in Virginia and Maryland, but wood remained the most popular material even in houses built by wealthy landowners. In the Carolinas, even in the crowded town of Charleston, wooden houses were much more common than brick houses. Eighteenth-century houses showed great interior improvements over their predecessors. Windows were made larger and shutters removed. Large, clear panes replaced the gray glass of the seventeenth century. Doorways were larger and more decorative. Fireplaces became decorative features of rooms. Walls were sometimes elaborately decorated. White paint began to take the place of blue, yellow, green and gray colors, which had been popular for walls in the earlier years. After about 1730, advertisements for wallpaper styles in scenic patterns began to appear in colonial newspapers. 46. The passage mainly discusses ________. A. the improved design of the 18th century colonial houses B. the role of carpenters in building the 18th century houses C. the varieties of decorations used in the 18th century houses D. a comparison of the 18th century houses and modern houses 47. Those responsible for designing houses in the 18th century North America were ________. A. customers B. carpenters C. interior decorators D. professional architects 48. Stones were commonly used to build houses in ________. A. Virginia B. Boston C. Charleston D. Pennsylvania 49. The word “predecessors” (para.4) refers to ________. A. colonists in the 17th century B. wooden houses in Charleston C. houses before the 18th century D. interior improvements in houses 【答案】46. A 47. B 48. D 49. At first a young boy, Manolin, had shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day the boy’s father told his son to go in another boat. From that time on, Santiago worked alone. The boy loved the old fisherman and always helped him with money and food. Usually, they would talk about the fish they had taken in luckier times or about American baseball after supper, while at night, alone in his cottage, Santiago dreamed of lions on the beaches of Africa, where he had gone on a sailing ship years before. He no longer dreamed of his dead wife. On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago set off to fish before dawn. Two of his baits were fresh tunas the boy had given him. Then he set his lines which went straight down into deep dark water. As the sun rose, he saw other boats in toward shore, which was only a low green line on the sea. A hovering man-of-war bird showed him where dolphins were chasing some flying fish. This time Santiago saw tuna jumping in the sunlight. A small one took the hook on his line. Pulling the fish aboard, the old man thought it a good fortune. Toward noon a marlin, a common fish in the sea, started eating the bait which was one hundred meters down. Gently the old man played the fish, a big one, as he knew from the weight on the line. At last, he struck to settle the hook. The fish did not come out of the surface. Instead, it began to pull the boat to the northwest. The old man followed it. Although he was alone and no longer strong, he had his skill and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to be tired. It became cold after the sunset. Suddenly the marlin leaned, pulling Santiago forward on his face and cutting his cheek. By dawn his left hand was cramped. The fish had headed northward; there was no land in sight. Hungry, he cut pieces from the tuna and chewed them slowly. That morning the fish jumped. Seeing it leap, Santiago knew he had hooked the biggest marlin he had ever seen. Then the fish went down and turned toward the east. Santiago drank a little water from the bottle during the hot afternoon. Close to nightfall a dolphin took the small book he had baited. He lifted it aboard, careful. After he had rested, he cut meat from the dolphin and kept also the two flying fish he found in its stomach. That night he slept. He awoke to feel the line running through his fingers as the fish jumped. Making the line loose slowly, he tried to tire the marlin. After the fish slowed its run, he washed his cut hands in sea water and ate one of the flying fish. At sunrise the marlin began to circle. Faint and dizzy, he worked to bring the big fish nearer with each turn. Almost exhausted, he finally drew his big fish alongside and drove in the harpoon. The fish was two feet longer than the boat. No fish like it had ever been seen in Havana harbor. An hour later, he sighted the first shark, a fierce Mako, and it came in fast to chase after the dead marlin. The old man struck the shark with his harpoon. The Mako rolled and sank, carrying the harpoon with it and leaving the marlin bloody. He knew the smell would spread. Watching, he saw two sharks closing in. He struck at one with his knife and watched it sliding down into deep water. He killed the other while it tore at the flesh of the marlin. When the third appeared, he thrust it with the knife. The other sharks came at sunset. At first he tried to beat them with the tiller from the boat, but his hands were bleeding and there were too many in the sea. In the darkness, as he steered toward the harbor of Havana, he heard them hitting the boat again and again. But the old man thought only of his steering and his great tiredness. He had gone out too far and the sharks had beaten him. He knew they would leave him nothing but the stripped skeleton of the big marlin. All lights were out when he sailed into the little harbor and beached his boat. He could just make out the white backbone and the upstanding tail of the fish. Once he fell under their weight and lay patiently until he could gather his strength to go on. In his cottage he fell on his bed and went to sleep. 53. According to the text, which statement is NOT true about Manolin? A. The boy left Santiago at last. B. The boy had mercy on Santiago. C. The boy was Santiago’s adopted son. D. The boy showed his great concern to Santiago. 54. Why does Santiago let the marlin lead his boat instead of pulling the big fish up? A. He was too tired and hungry to pull the big fish up. B. He wanted to use the marlin as a bait to catch the sharks. C. His experience told him not to do so before the fish was tired out. D. He wanted to kill the marlin first before he pulled it up to the boat. 55. Which sentence below can be used to best describe Santiago’s character? A. “He no longer dreamed of his dead wife.” (in Para.1) B. “Although he was alone and no longer strong, he had his skill and knew many tricks.” (in Para.4) C. “Almost exhausted, he finally drew his big fish alongside and drove in the harpoon.” (in Para.5) D. “Once he fell under their weight and lay patiently until he could gather his strength to go on.” (in Para.6) 56. According to the text, what will be talked about next? A. People’s reflection when they saw the giant marlin’s skeleton outside. B. A funeral held by the boy and the local people after his death. C. Santiago’s action to realize his dream about the lions. D. Santiago’s struggle against sharks. 【答案】53. C 54. C 55. D 56. 根据第一段“At first a young boy, Manolin, had shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day the boy’s father told his son to go in another boat. From that time on, Santiago worked alone. The boy loved the old fisherman and always helped him with money and food.(起初,一个名叫马诺林的小男孩分担了他的不幸,但在倒霉的第四十天之后,男孩的父亲让他坐另一条船去。从那时起,圣地亚哥独自工作。男孩很爱老渔夫,总是给他钱和食物。)”可知,选项A(男孩最终离开了圣地亚哥)、B(男孩同情圣地亚哥)、D(男孩非常关心圣地亚哥)均符合原文;原文未提及“男孩是圣地亚哥的养子”,选项C与原文不符。故选C。 【54题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Although he was alone and no longer strong, he had his skill and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to be tired.(虽然他孤身一人,身体也不再强壮,但他有自己的技巧,也懂得很多诀窍。 根据最后一段“He could just make out the white backbone and the upstanding tail of the fish. Once he fell under their weight and lay patiently until he could gather his strength to go on. In his cottage he fell on his bed and went to sleep.(他只能辨认出那条鱼白色的脊骨和直立的尾巴。有一次,他被他们的重量压垮了,他耐心地躺着,直到他能集中力量继续前进。在他的小屋里,他倒在床上睡着了。)”可知,圣地亚哥带着马林鱼的骨架回到港口并入睡,接下来最可能讲述的是他人看到这副巨大骨架时的反应。故选A。 Section C 8% Directions: Read the following passage. III. A. colonists in the 17th century B. wooden houses in Charleston C. houses before the 18th century D. interior improvements in houses B Self-driving Capabilities Sensor and camera-equipped models from Audi and Volkswagen, among others, don’t just automatically brake to prevent minor accidents; they can actually navigate (行驶) around highway traffic and into garages without a human at the wheel. C For eighty-four days old Santiago had not caught a single fish. 53. Biological Clock When the sun rises on a warm and sunny day, you can see some flowers open up. When they close late in the afternoon, other flowers open. Biological rhythms, like the opening and closing of flowers, happen all over nature. But not all of them are daily rhythms. Some, like the beating of our hearts, happen every second. ________57________ Scientists use the term biological clock to describe the timing that controls biological rhythms. ________58________ In some animals it is probably controlled by the brain. In plants and other living things that have no brain, it must be something else. The migration of animals happens when a signal is sent out. For example, when days become shorter, birds leave the northern parts of the world and fly south where it is warm. In the summer they fly back to have babies. Humans also have biological clocks that control their daily rhythms. When people travel by plane from one continent to another, they often cross many time zones. Their internal clocks don’t seem to work correctly. We call this jet lag. ________59________ People who work night shifts also have problems with their biological clocks. They may not be as active as people who work during the day time. Biological clocks control many rhythms of life. ________60________ Doctors are looking for new ways to make traveling more comfortable and medical treatment more effective. A.
