Back in 2020: One day, I was scheduling appointments in the office; the next, I broke my leg and had to stay in bed. Over time, I grew sick of video conferencing and TV marathons, and started searching for something new to fill the long and restless days.
A headline on a website caught my eyes: "This Weaving Loom(织布机) Saved Me When All My Previous Hobbies Disappeared." This was the universe speaking to me. I immediately bought all the things recommended—a small loom, a few colors of threads(线) and a weaving book.
My first weaving looked...not great. I skipped the book and free-styled a pink-and-white cloth to hang on my apartment door. It started off OK; I strung the loom successfully and figured out how to slide the threaded needle over and under the backbone of the cloth.
Then, mistake after mistake, I pulled the thread way too tight, making the sides curve in. There were lots of gaps, where I could see the white threads underneath the colored ones. I couldn't make the long fringe(穗) at the bottom. In a fit of frustration, I left it a mess.
Humbled by my pride, I opened the weaving book. I learned how to get my edges straight and my ends neat. I figured out how to sew backs onto cloths, stuff them with cotton and make colorful pillows to display on my sofa. Soon I started making some for my families and friends. I even saved up money to buy a 4-by-4-foot loom, where I worked on bigger objects.
I was officially taken with it. Actually, I've never been good at anything that requires hand-eye-brain cooperation. But weaving, somehow, feels different. It requires the same steps repeated over again and encourages you to lose yourself in the process. Every time I pick up my loom, my brain quiets down; as my needle slips between threads, I ground myself. I've never loved a hobby like this.

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu's imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life-wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn't expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction's highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It's the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917—2008), a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke's 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
"My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea," Liu said. "That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed(充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe."
But no matter how far away Liu's imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational(理性的). In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on "hard science". Liu's works aren't simply daydreams.
12.What do we know about Liu Cixin?
A. He became a full-time writer when he was young.
B. He is the first Asian to win the Arthur Clarke Award.
C. He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
D. He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
13.Liu Cixin's words are used mainly to show .
A.
his feeling after reading Clarke's work

D. his confusion when he started writing
14.Why did the author mention The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth?
A. To prove that Liu Cixinˈs works relate science to reality.
B. To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.

D. To compare the different writing styles in the two books.

When Jackie came to his first piano lesson in his mother's car, he was already 11 years old. I preferred students begin at an earlier age, but owing to his insistence(坚持), I took him as a student. As much as Jackie tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm(节奏). At the end of each lesson, he'd say, "My mom's going to hear me play someday." But it seemed hopeless. I only knew his mother from a distance as she waited in her aged car, but never stepped in.
Then one day Jackie stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to quit. I also was glad that he stopped coming—he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!
Several weeks later I mailed to the students' homes a letter on the upcoming concert. Surprisingly, Jackie received and asked me if he could be in the concert. I told him that the concert was not for dropouts, but for current pupils. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. I didn't know what led me to agree eventually.
The night for the concert came. The high school gymnastics was packed with parents and friends. I put up Jackie last in the program. I thought that any damage he would do would come at the end of the program and the negative effect would reduce to the minimum(最小值).
The concert went off smoothly. Then Jackie came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled(皱巴巴的) and his hair looked messy(凌乱的). "Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?" I thought.
Unexpectedly, Jackie chose Mozart's Concerto 21 in C Major.

此处描述客观事实,主语Parkinson's disease与mark之间是被动关系,要用一般现在时的被动语态,其结构为“be+动词-ed”,主语是单数,be动词用is,故填is marked。
根据后文“is”可知,the number of为固定短语,意为“……的数量”,符合语境,故填 the。
10. 句意:尽管如此,这项研究表明,太极拳可能对帕金森病的运动和非运动症状都有长期益处,有可能延缓疾病的发展。分析句子结构,此处修饰动词delaying,要用副词,故填potentially。

【答案】 Unexpectedly, Jackie chose Mozart's Concerto #21 in C Major. Jackie pulled out the piano bench and began his performance. As a matter of fact, I was not fully prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were dancing on keys, which made me extremely shocked. Never had I heard Mozart played so well by people of his age. After six and a half minutes, he ended up very well. Everyone at present was wild with great excitement and was on their feet, breaking into loud applause.
Immediately I ran up on stage and held Jackie firmly in great joy, asking "How did you do it?" "Well...remember I told you my mom was sick?" He explained, tears rolling in her eyes, "Actually she had cancer and passed away this morning. And she was born deaf, so tonight was the first time that she ever heard me play in heaven. I just wanted to make it special." After hearing his word, tears were welling up in my eyes. And at that moment, I realized it was he that taught me the true meaning of perseverance and love.
