Labubu dolls
In recent months, everywhere I go,there's been one accessory on

artist Kasing Lung created. After the initial release of the book, the popular toy company Pop Mart
created the first collectible collection for sale in 2019,and since then, sales have soared as new
collections are released.
The Labubu creatures are a part of a tribe perceived as "The Monsters,"and other members

Platforms aid fairer digital economy
Leading Chinese e-commerce and food delivery players are taking a step back from discount
wars,as Meituan,Taobao and JD all announced in August to hold back 31 price-cutting,
promising to shift the focus from burning cash to building a fairer and more sustainable digital
economy.
The coordinated move follows32pressure from regulators.Just weeks earlier,
China's top market watchdog, along with four other government agencies, called in the country's
leading platforms to a closed-door meeting. The message was explicit:stop the race to the bottom,
clean up unfair practices and protect the rights of consumers, merchants and delivery workers.
In response, these major platforms33a series of promises. They promised to plan
discounts more carefully, avoid irrational promotions and stop selling goods and services far
below cost. They were also told to shoulder more social responsibility and engage in
.34
competition.
Meituan was the first to go public, guaranteeing it would firmly regulate promotional
activities and eliminate unfair competition.Discounts, the company emphasized, must follow
antitrust rules,be disclosed transparently and never distort the market by driving prices far below
cost. The company also said it would35 the interests of small and medium-sized
merchants,ensure equal access to discounts.Its stated goal:to build a multi-stakeholder
ecosystem that benefits consumers, delivery workers and the platform 36.
JD37the government's message in an internal statement."We believe in winning
users through quality, price and service not by burning cash,"it said.D promised to lean on
technology and the supply chain38 to secure long-term growth and consumer trust.
Alibaba-owned Taobao rolled out a joint statement, declaring to resolutely oppose unfair
competition and jointly foster a win-win ecosystem. They promised to make discounts more
targeted,to avoid wasteful campaigns, and to respect merchants'rights to be informed,to choose
and to set prices independently.
The wave of commitments comes as Beijing sharpens its39 of the platform
economy,at a time when the daily order volume of these platforms surged from around 100
million orders at the start of May to roughly 250 million by the month's end. This expansion wave
is 40 the industry's competitive logic, but competition itself is not the enemy.

In the early 1920s,Ernest Hemingway was a little-known journalist in Europe.Then,in 1925,
he published"In Our Time",a book of short stories;in July of that year,he started to41

Hemingway became famous"gradually and then suddenly".Eight other novels and novellas
followed,as did Pulitzer and Nobel prizes. He remains the most famous American novelist of his
century,43 mentions in Google's collection of written or spoken texts. His Wikipedia
page also gets more views than those of his contemporaries, including F.Scott Fitzgerald and John
Steinbeck (see chart).Why?
For whom the web tolls

On Dec.26,when Gelinne,60,was gazing out the back windows of his home in Edgewater,
he saw a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, losing altitude.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees,Gelinne,a former Navy commander and current
cybersecurity expert, realized it was going to land in the stream. He flashed on a moment from
more than 20 years earlier:Sept.11,2001.Gelinne was at work in the Pentagon in Washington,
D.C.,when terrorists crashed a jumbo jet into the building. He fled the chaos but has always
wondered if he could have stayed inside and helped.
"To the right was the crisis, and to the left was escape.I don't even know if I could've gone
right,but I went left,"he recalled."I always second-guessed myself about that decision."
On this day,Gelinne didn't hesitate. He ran down to the waterfront. The plane was now
sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing.Gelinne knew from his Navy training that even a few
minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it.So he
and his son,John Jr.,pulled two kavaks out from under their back deck.
The two men set off, pushing their boats across the ice.It was exhausting work. When
Gelinne reached the plane, the pilot was standing on a tail wing, submerged up to his chest,
surrounded by open water.Gelinne pushed his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling
toward the pilot and thinking,What if he panics? What if Iflip?
With his son nearby,Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking,"Just hang on to the
boat as if you were hugging your wife."The pilot grabbed the kayak's bow.Now the two men
were floating together, but Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot out of the water and up onto the
shelf of unbroken ice behind him before the man lost too much body heat. But each time Gelinne
tried to land atop the ice shelf, the kayak broke through.
By now a boat from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources appeared, breaking
through ice as it arrived. It picked up the pilot and swiftly transported him to safety.Later the boat
4
returned to help Gelinne, now exhausted,to shore.
The rescuers had arrived just in time,Gelinne recalled."I'm 60 years old,"he says."There
was no way I could get him to shore."Still,he was satisfied he'd gone the right way that day.

A.illustrate the source of his guilt and how it fueled his determination this time
B.show his experience in the military made him qualified for rescue operations
C.emphasize the psychological trauma of the event had impacted him negatively
D.suggest individuals have the moral obligation to assist others in crisis
57.The underlined word "second-guessed"most likely means"
”in the context.
A.completely forgave
B.strongly doubted
C.constantly consulted
D.passionately defended
58.What were the challenges Gelinne faced in the rescue attempt?
①the sinking plane
②the broken kayaks
③the drowning pilot
④his panicked son
⑤the icy water
A.①②③
B.①③⑤
C.①④⑤
D.②③④
59.Which of the following may serve as the best title for the passage?
A.A pilot's icy survival:a plane crash on frozen creek
B.A veteran's attempt:overcoming past regret with a brave act
C.A family's highlight moment:how united rescue saved a life
D.Navy training in action:an emergency rescue operation saves life

Some college majors are years of all-nighters in disguise. The hardest college majors are
often mentally exhausting, time intensive, and often come with heavy course loads that challenge
even the most dedicated students.Whether you're struggling with nultivariable calculus
)or spending entire weekends on lab reports, these fields are not for the faint of heart.
■Engineering
Engineering majors are like academic marathons.Mechanical, electrical, chemical, and geological
engineering require a deep understanding of math, physics, and critical thinking. These STEM
majors demand hands-on experience,abstract thinking,and mastery of engineering principles.The
coursework covers a broad range of topics, often combining theoretical physics with practical
problem solving.
Physics
Physics majors navigate the world of quantum mechanics and theoretical physics. These students
must be fluent in multivariable calculus, differential equations, and high-level math. They often
tackle complex problems that have few real-world analogies ()Physics is a hard science that
expects students to develop strong data analysis skills and understand concepts light-years beyond
intro-level courses. The path often continues into graduate school and advanced degrees.
Fine Arts
Despite the stereotype, fine arts majors face a brutal academic grind.Their work in sculpture or
painting demands emotional energy, technical skill, and relentless critique.Fine arts majors must
constantly submit their work to critique-a process described as"nail-biting and time consuming"
by art educators-making this field emotionally demanding in addition to its technical challenges.
Like other non-STEM degrees,this path requires dedication,resilience,and deep self-reflection.
■Computer Science
This major is a steep climb from the start.Students study programming languages, algorithms,
data structures, and software systems. Each topic builds on the last, and missing a concept early on
can make later material feel impossible.Computer science demands logical thinking, abstract
reasoning, and high-level problem solving. While some computer science graduates pursue
advanced research or graduate degrees, many find success in the tech industry with just a
bachelor's degree.
60.The expression"the faint of heart in the first paragraph most probably refers to
A.those who prefer theory over practical application
B.those who have no pursuit of advanced degrees
C.those who lack courage to face something difficult
D.those who are uncomfortable with public criticism
61.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Fine arts courses have lighter workloads but are more psychologically challenging.
B.These four majors all lead to stable career paths and decent financial rewards.
C.Engineering and computer science are considered difficult for their math requirements.
D.Theory-heavy physics often leads to graduate study and advanced degrees.
62.
may be most interested in this passage.
A.Amy,an ambitious engineer who wants to perfect her hands-on skills,
B.Benjamin,a hardworking high school senior good at chemistry academically,
C.Chole,a caring mother whose son is struggling to choose a major,
D.Dave,a talented artist whose sculpture has received harsh critic criticism,

Glen powell,a Hollywood icon, likes 1x listening speed:"I want to hear people talk at a
normal human rate."Bowen Yang,an American comedian, prefers his narration fast and
loose--"You can round up to 2x"--though he reckons 1.8x is the perfect"Goldilocks"pace.
Such remarks appeared in an advertisment by Audible,an audiobook platform, which
featured various celebrities talking about the speed at which they listen to their chosen titles. It
provoked fierce debate online for implying that those who make haste are weird."I listened to
your judgmental ad on 2x speed,"one TikTok user said. Some claimed to feel "shamedby the
advert and threatened to cancel their subscriptions.
The online controversy points to the changing way in which audiences, particularly young
ones, engage with digital media.Polling by The Economist and YouGov found that 31%of
Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 listen to audio at playback speeds faster than 1x,
compared with 8%of people aged 45 and over.
6
Both Apple and Spotify offer users the option to dash through podcasts.YouTube has a
similar feature and recently rolled out a 4x option for its premium subscribers, apparently by
popular demand. The time-saving benefits can be enormous:YouTube claims that its viewers
collectively save more than 900 years per day thanks to its fast-playback feature.
Speech acceleration does not seem to affect listeners'ability to concentrate. The average
person speaks at a rate of about 150 words per minute, but most brains are capable of processing
information faster than that, says Marcus Pearce,a cognitive scientist at Queen Mary University of
London.A recent meta-analysis led by academics at the University of Waterloo in Canada looked
at the test scores of students who had watched lectures back at varying speeds. They found that up
to 1.5x there was not much of a difference in performance, although scores started to decrease
noticeably as playback speeds approached or exceeded 2x.
For audio and video platforms, there is no downside to offering different playback options:
the more books or episodes a subscriber gets through, the better the advertising and sales revenues.
But for listeners, the experience differs greatly between 1x and 2x."There's an art of pacing, tone
and suspension"to reading aloud, says Kimberly Wetherell,an audiobook narrator."If you speed
that up too much, you're losing that part of the performance."
Rhetoric often relies on rhythm and pauses for emphasis and meaning:few actors race
through the lines in"Hamlet",for instance.Yet for many,to speed or not to speed is no longer a
question.
63.What can be inferred from the University of Waterloo research findings?
A.Students should always use 1.5x speed for optimal knowledge review.
B.Each individual has a unique optimal playback speed for learning
C.Lecture content is basically unsuitable for accelerated playback.
D.Comprehension and playback speed are not positively related.
64.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Audible appreciates the diversified preferences for accelerated playback speeds
B.Platforms offer faster playback speeds to increase user engagement and revenue.
C.Whether for platforms or subscribers, different playback options make little difference.
D.150 words per minute is the limit of the human brain's capacity for processing information.
65.What is the author's attitude toward speeding playback?
A.Indifferent.B.Supportive.
C.Objective.
D.Disapproval.
66.The main purpose of the passage is to
A.expose how technology companies profit from changing media habits
B.document the rising popularity of accelerated media consumption among youth
C.advocate for the use of playback speed settings based on content type
D.analyze the psy chological effects of different playback speeds on comprehension

This indicates that the health burden of frequent nightmares could be substantial.
Are nightmares bad for your health?
Sleep has long been a demon-haunted world. In olden days such visitations were thought to
drain the dreamer of life-energy and, though modern science dismisses the notion of actual
demons, the fear that bad dreams somehow weaken a dreamer's health has not vanished.
67
Almost everyone has nightmares. But it is among those who have them weekly that
connections with ill-health seem to arise. Some links are to be expected.Depression, anxiety, and
chronic pain,for example,all have nightmares as a common symptom.68
Research by abidemi Otaiku suggests that nightmares may warn of neurological illnesses, such as
Parkinson's disease and dementia(老年痴呆).
Worst of all, nightmares may kill.Dr Otaiku's most recent work shows that frequent
nightmares are stronger predictors of early death than smoking or obesity.
69
Those with frequent(at least weekly)nightmares were three times more likely to die before the
age of 70 than those who had them less than once a month.
All this suggests paying attention to nightmares is a good idea.Where they are a symptom,
they can warn of trouble ahead. And where they are a cause, treatments to reduce nightmares can
be undertaken as a priority.
70 In the cases of depression and anxiety, nightmares are both symptom and
cause. In conditions such as Parkinson's and dementia, though, which are the results of
neurological damage, nightmares are unlikely to be anything other than symptomatic.
Treating nightmares is harder than spotting them.Psychotherapy may help some. And certain
drugs may assist. But the study of nightmares remains an underexplored field of medicine. That
needs to change

Intermittent Fasting:A New Approach to Health and Longevity
In recent years, intermittent fasting (IF)has gained popularity worldwide as a lifestyle choice
to improve health.Unlike traditional dieting,IF does not focus on what people eat but rather when
they eat.The most common patterns include the 16/8 method, which limits food intake to an
eight-hour window each day,and the 5:2 method,in which people eat normally for five days but
restrict calories on two non-consecutive days.
Advocates of IF believe it benefits the body in multiple ways.Firstly,it may support weight
management.By limiting eating hours, people often consume fewer calories, which helps reduce
body fat.For example, someone who usually snacks late at night might naturally avoid extra
calories by following IF.Moreover, fasting periods allow the body to use stored energy more
effectively,promoting metabolic flexibility.
Secondly,IF may reduce the risk of chronic diseases.Studies suggest that fasting can lower
blood sugar, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation-factors closely linked to
type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Some studies have even noted improvements in blood
pressure and cholesterol, though more long-term evidence is still needed.Additionally, fasting
may enhance cellular repair processes, such as autophagy, which removes damaged cells and
promotes longevity.
Thirdly,IF is often easier to follow compared with strict diets that ban certain foods.Since no
food groups are forbidden, individuals can enjoy a balanced diet during eating windows, making
the approach more sustainable in the long term. For instance,a person can still enjoy family meals
or social gatherings without feeling restricted,as long as these fall within the eating period.
Nevertheless,IF is not suitable for everyone.Pregnant women, children,or individuals with
certain medical conditions may experience negative effects. Some people may also struggle with
hunger, fatigue,or overeating during eating periods. Therefore,it is recommended to consult a
healthcare professional before starting an intermittent fasting plan.
