One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;
3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph1: A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.
____________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph2: At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Jimmy and Tommy, good friends and adventure enthusiasts, decided to explore an unknown forest they had heard of from local legends. After weeks of planning and gathering supplies, they set off, excited yet slightly nervous.
As they entered the forest, they were struck by its beauty and mystery. Tall, ancient trees formed a natural shelter, and sunlight created a dappled (斑驳的) pattern on the forest floor. Birds chirped, and leaves rustled (沙沙作响) in the gentle breeze. Jimmy and Tommy walked along a narrow path, amazed at the colorful flowers and occasional small animals dashing through the bushes.
Deeper in the forest, they met an elderly hunter with a weather-beaten face, carrying a rifle gun and a rabbit. He looked at them with curiosity and concern. “Young men,” he said in a rough but kind voice, “where are you headed?”
“We’re exploring this forest,” Jimmy replied excitedly. “We’ve heard so many stories about it.”
The hunter nodded slowly. “It’s beautiful, but also dangerous. There are hidden dangers and animals that can harm you. I suggest you turn back while you still can.”
But Jimmy and Tommy were too excited to follow the warning. They thanked him politely and continued on, confident in their abilities.
As the day wore on, the forest became more challenging. The path disappeared, and they had to navigate (找路) through thick bushes. The air grew colder, and the forest sounds became strange and unsettling. They realized they had underestimated the forest’s complexity.
Suddenly, Tommy slipped and fell into a deep hole, twisting his ankle. He cried out in pain, and Jimmy rushed to the edge. “Are you okay?” he asked anxiously.
“I think I twisted my ankle,” Tommy replied, “I can’t climb out on my own.”
Jimmy tried to help with a stick, but it was too short. They were lost, and Jimmy didn’t know what to do next. Just then, the sound of footsteps could be heard in the distance.

On a sunny weekend, 17-year-old Tom joined a school camping trip to a remote island. Tom, an enthusiastic photographer, was also a bit of a loner who often preferred exploring on his own. He had taken a basic survival skills course but had never truly faced a real-life emergency.
As the group stepped into the thick underbrush, the air was heavy with the scent of damp moss and wildflowers, and Tom couldn’t contain his excitement. Mr. Wilson, a seasoned outdoors teacher, paused every few minutes to warn everybody to stay close. He took out a bundle of small red flags. Every 20 steps, he tied a flag to a low-hanging branch or a sturdy fern (蕨), saying, “The flags, along with the gurgling stream nearby, are your lifelines. They’ll boost your chance of survival.” Most students watched carefully, but Tom, half nodded absentmindedly, half distracted by the calls of rumored golden-winged parrots, gradually drifting away from the group.
A moment later, Tom was photographing the mouth-watering Acai berries (巴西莓) covering the mountain forests when rolling thunder crashed. Looking around, he realized there was no one around — he was all alone. Quickly Tom stuffed his camera into his bag and tried to retrace his steps. But the sky darkened abruptly, a fierce wind tore through the trees. The heavy rain came pouring into a muddy mess, washing away any signs of the trail. His phone already low on battery died completely because he pressed it in a wild manner to call for help. Tom stumbled (蹒跚而行) through the mud, his sneakers stained with dirt and water dripping from his hair.
As night fell, the downpour stopped but the temperature dropped below freezing, and the cold bit through his clothes. Through the bitter wind, he heard a chilling sound — the distant howl of wolves. Heart pounding heavily, Tom was in a complete panic, with an overwhelming longing to go home.

In 2007, I taught at a local high school. One day, I heard a colleague talking about exploring a cycling track called The Munda Biddi that runs through the bush (灌木丛). At that time, it extended from the nearby town of Collie to Mundaring in the Perth Hills — about 225 kilometres.
I researched the track and became excited about riding it during the school summer holidays. I bought some maps and began to plan my cycling. I didn’t realize how dangerous it was to ride through bushland and forests during the fire season.
The Munda Biddi Track was still new, and mobile phone coverage along it was poor. My map reading skills would be put to the test. The ground was generally flat, and few visible piloting landmarks could be seen over the towering trees.
With a week to complete the track, I began preparing my basic mountain bike for the journey. I was going to carry everything I needed.
My wife dropped me off at Collie just before midday. It was very hot, but I only had to cycle to Yarri Hut, 27 kilometres away, for the first overnight stop.
After getting lost in Collie for a long time, I finally found the track. But soon I realised how hot it was. I drank water regularly and the first thing I did when I arrived at Yarri Hut was check the rainwater tank (箱). I was relieved to find that it had water, and I refilled my bottles.
I started early the next day, following the track to my second stop at Nglang Boodja Hut. After a while the track markers became difficult to find. Many had been damaged by bushfires and, without a GPS, I was becoming concerned about getting lost. I hadn’t met any other cyclists along the journey, and there were no fresh wheel tracks.
By midday, the heat had become unbearable I tried to make sense of the maps. I tried to contact my wife, but I had no idea where I was.

When I was 15, I climbed my first high mountain near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia.I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the top. But I loved the challenge of overcoming something bigger than myself. Soon I’d climbed nearly 60 mountains.
Last year, on 15 February, my friend Mel Olsen and I went to Oregon to climb 11, 240-foot Mount Hood. That day, we started at 3 a.m. It was about -10℃. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together. Before the final push to the top, my face felt as if it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead.
As we went higher, it became more difficult to climb on. At around 9 a.m., we reached an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. I was sure that I was safe, so I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a sound, and a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In a second, I fell backwards. I could hear Mel calling my name as I was rolling down the mountain. After a few seconds, I found I’d fallen 50 feet. Then I took a survey of my body to see where I was hurt, starting with my head, then my neck and arms. For the most part, I was fine, except that I was suffering from a huge pain in my left leg and couldn’t move.

Mr. Smith and his 12-year-old son, John, had gone hiking on the Red Mountain track in southern Utah. Mother, Allen, began to worry after the pair failed to show up hours later at a spot where she was supposed to pick them up, and phoned Sgt. Jacob Paul, who manages the volunteer search and rescue team for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The red rock mountains of southern Utah are popular among adventure seekers, offering splendid sand dunes (沙丘), narrow canyons and sandstone cliffs that can be forbidding to inexperienced hikers because of dangers from rough terrain (地形) and terrible weather. Mr. Smith decided to take the hike the previous night. “It’s a typical track that we have taken so many times,” he said. On a navigator (导航仪) app on his phone, he showed his wife their expected route. “Look, we’re going to start right here. We’re going to end up out there. And we’ll meet each other in the park around this time.”
The boy and his father set out on their hike shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday. Everything was going well. They got to the overlook that they were trying to check out. The plan was to meet Allen at a parking lot at the foot of the mountain by 6 p.m. at the latest. They were actually walking back, talking about what they were going to do the moment they got home. On the way back Mr. Smith decided to use the navigator app on his phone. On previous hikes, the father always relied on a compass, footsteps and tracks to guide him. However, this time Mr. Smith was depending on his GPS, and came to find out GPS took them somewhere on the most rocky places. It didn’t turn out the way they wanted. The application ended up sending them somewhere else on the other side of the mountains where they ended up getting trapped.
The navigator app not only led them lost but also drained (耗尽) the battery on their only phone. It was dark and the weather was getting cold.

Ava, a high-spirited 17-year-old, was thrilled when her parents gifted her a brand-new mountain bike for her birthday. The shiny bike was a symbol of freedom and adventure to her. She couldn’t wait to take it on a challenging trail (小径) in the nearby forest.
One sunny weekend, Ava packed a small backpack with a water bottle, a sandwich, and a map, then set off on her bike. The forest trail was filled with twists and turns, and the tall trees provided a cool shade. As she rode deeper into the forest, the beauty of nature around her made her feel at peace.
However, after a while, Ava realized she had taken a wrong turn. The trail she was on looked unfamiliar, and the map in her backpack seemed to be of no help. Panic started to set in as she rode back and forth, trying to find a recognizable path.
Suddenly, she heard a loud growl(咆哮)from the bushes. Her heart pounding, Ava froze in her tracks. A large, angry-looking bear emerged from the bushes, standing on its back legs and showing its sharp claws. Ava knew she was in a life-threatening situation.
She quickly remembered what she had learned about bear encounters: don’t run, make yourself look big, and back away slowly. With trembling hands, she opened her backpack and took out her water bottle, waving it in the air while shouting as loudly as she could. The bear roared again, taking a step closer.
At that moment, a thought crossed Ava’s mind. She had to protect not only herself but also her precious bike. But how could she possibly do both?
Ava’s mind raced as she tried to come up with a plan. She knew she couldn’t outrun the bear, and leaving her bike behind was not an option she was willing to consider easily. Then, she noticed a large tree a short distance away. If she could lead the bear away from her bike and towards the tree, she might be able to use it to her advantage.

Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson? Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.

A sudden shake made Anna White awake. Rubbing her eyes, she noticed the vase on the corner table shaking. It was just going to fall from the corner, but she managed to catch it just in time. Then she realized that it must be an earthquake. She rushed downstairs to look for her parents and brother. But everyone was sleeping soundly as it was just 3 in the morning. She screamed, “MOM! DAD! CHASE!” Her heart pounded as the quake continued. She knew what was happening, but what should she do?
“CHASE ...!” she called her elder brother Chase again. Chase had got up and was on the stairs. He was very scared when he felt the stairs shaking. He was about to fall on the stairs but quickly grabbed the railing (扶手)for support. “What was that?” he asked and looked towards Anna who was sitting under a table in the dining room and he quickly joined her.
Their mother, Lisa, soon appeared in the dining room. She’d felt the shaking from her room. Realizing it was an earthquake, she quickly came under the table with them and asked Chase and Anna if they were OK. Her eyes stared nervously at the door.
“Where’s Dad?” Chase asked after a moment, his voice tense. Anna’s stomach tightened with worry. They knew their father, a doctor, was often called away for emergency cases, sometimes even at night.
Lisa hesitated, her voice trembling, “He went on an emergency call ... We just need to stay safe. Dad will be fine. Don’t worry about him.”
Tears welled in her eyes as the weight of the situation sank in. The idea of him being out there, in the middle of an earthquake, was terrifying.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the building next door. Through the window, they saw a nearby building shaking violently, sending clouds of dust into the air.
“This is too dangerous,” Chase said, glancing around. Without another word, they grabbed each other’s hands and ran out of the building.
Paragraph 1: They managed to arrive at the street and saw a scene in chaos.

Paragraph1: A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.
____________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph2: At that very moment, the helicopter arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________【满分范文】
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp, then we realized the spray had only angered him even more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not knowing what to do. At this critical moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the fence. It worked! The bear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he eat up all the bread and came back again.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. “Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried out. Once the helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we were safe on the helicopter up in the air, I was amazed to the spot that the bear had finally tore down the fence and ran towards the food we left behind. I quickly took out the camera and photographed the rare scene- we were robbed by a polar bear.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jimmy looked up and saw the elderly hunter approaching them. The hunter’s face softened as he saw Tommy in the hole. “Don’t worry,” he said calmly. He quickly took out a long rope from his bag, tied one end around a strong tree, and lowered the other end into the hole. “Hold on tight, and I’ll pull you up,” he instructed. A moment later, Tommy was carefully lifted out. Jimmy breathed a sigh of relief. Jimmy and Tommy were grateful for his help. Seeing Tommy’s injured ankle and the fading light, the hunter shook his head. “It’s getting late, and it’s not safe to travel in the dark.”
The hunter suggested taking them to his cottage to rest for the night. Jimmy and Tommy gratefully accepted the offer. The hunter’s cottage was cozy and warm, with a fire burning in the fireplace. He applied some ice to Tommy’s ankle and gave them some hot food. As they sat by the fire, the hunter shared stories of his own adventures in the forest. Jimmy and Tommy listened in awe. The next morning, they left with a newfound respect for nature and a promise to be more cautious in their future adventures. This experience taught them the value of kindness and the importance of respecting the unknown.

With an empty stomach, Tom felt his strength slipping away. Desperately, Tom scanned his surroundings and found some Acai berries. After a brief rest, a sense of urgency propelled him to action. With newfound strength, he recalled Mr. Wilson’s words about the red flags and the stream. He delved into the dense underbrush, his gaze darting around in search of the tell-tale red flags. All the while, he pricked up his ears, trying to catch even the slightest murmur of the stream, acutely aware that it was his lifeline.
After what seemed like hours, Tom heard shouts in the distance. His heart raced with hope as he mustered his strength to shout back, “I’m here!” Finally, he emerged from the thick underbrush and saw his teacher and classmates. Mr. Wilson ran to him and hugged him tightly. “Good boy,” Mr. Wilson whispered, his voice thick with emotion. Tom felt a mix of relief, gratitude and regret. This experience had not only tested his survival skills but also made him realize that following the rules and staying calm were not merely virtues, but the lifeline to navigate the unpredictable wilderness.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just then, I saw smoke rising in the distance. I was full of fear and hope. I knew that smoke could mean danger, especially during fire season, but it also meant there might be people nearby. I rode carefully, keeping an eye on any signs of fire. As I got closer, I saw a group of hikers gathered around a fire. They were surprised to see me but immediately kindly shared their water and food. One of them even helped me contact my wife to let her know I was safe.
Finally, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. It was my wife! She had organized a search party after I failed to reach my second stop on time. When they received the telephone, they came to rescue me in a hurry. I felt a wave of relief as I saw her and the search team. I was so glad to see them. After a few days of fear, I was finally safe. The experience taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of preparation and the kindness of strangers.

The pain spread all over my body. I shouted for help. Immediately Mel and other climbers came to help me and called Mountain Rescue. Then I was taken to a hospital where I stayed for ten days. I was treated well both in hospital and at home. The doctors told me it would be a year before my leg was well again. When lying in the bed, I was always thinking what I should do to prevent such an accident. I was constantly learning how to do it better next time.
I started climbing again half a year later. Of course, my parents and friends have been worried about me and have been advising me not to take risks any more. I know the fall has made me more careful. But the experience also made me grow as a person. Since the accident, I’ve climbed another 10 mountains. I love it. I’m not going to let one fall stop me from doing my favorite thing.

They were trying to look for shelter when they came across a backpack with a note inside. John opened the backpack. Inside lay a flashlight, an blanket, and matches left by a previous hiker with a note: “For whoever needs hope.” Mr. Smith’s tense face softened, with relief shining in his eyes. “We’ll make it, son,” he murmured. Kneeling on the rocky ground, they struck a match and its tiny flame danced bravely against the wind. They piled dry branches around the flame to keep it burning through the night. Under the blanket, John pressed closer to his father, listening to his steady heartbeat — a rhythm that whispered courage. Above, stars blinked through the clouds, silent witnesses to their stubborn hope.
Early the next morning, father and son saw the rescue teams who were sent by Paul. “Over here!” Mr. Smith shouted, waving his jacket. John’s heart leaped, tears blurring his vision as rescue teams emerged. Paul, leading the group, grinned, “Your fire’s smoke guided us!” Exhausted but excited, John stumbled forward, hugging his mother who had insisted on joining the search. Mr. Smith clasped Paul’s hand, gratitude choking his words. As sunlight bathed the canyon, John glanced back at the charred matchsticks, now symbols not of desperation, but of humanity’s chain of kindness — broken tracks mended by shared light.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Gathering all her courage, slowly she started backing away from her bike and towards the tree. The bear hesitated for a moment, watching her movements carefully. Ava kept waving the water bottle and shouting to maintain her presence while moving sideways. Her heart was racing, but she forced herself to stay focused. As she reached the tree, she quickly climbed onto the lowest branch and pulled herself up. The bear, now more curious than aggressive, sniffed around her bike but did not go after it immediately. From her safer position, Ava took out her phone and dialed for help, whispering as quietly as she could.
As the loud helicopter sound on her cell-phone filled the air, the bear looked frightened. It raised its head, clearly confused by the sudden noise. Within minutes, a rescue helicopter appeared above the forest, circling around to locate Ava’s position. The bear, startled by the powerful wind and noise, ran back into the bushes. Ava breathed a sigh of relief and waved frantically at the helicopter. She pointed to her bike, signaling that she wanted it rescued too. The crew understood and lowered a rope. With great effort, they secured both Ava and her beloved mountain bike and lifted them safely aboard. As the helicopter flew away, Ava looked down at the forest with gratitude, knowing she had faced danger bravely — and hadn’t lost her sense of adventure.

In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight. The water had already seeped into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung tightly to her parents’hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all huddled together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
Suddenly, a bunch of searching light from a rescue boat flashed across Mrs. Thomson’s window. “Look!” Mary exclaimed, pointing excitedly. Dad grabbed the flashlight and waved it back and forth, signaling for help. Within minutes, they heard the sound of voices and the gentle lapping of the boat against the building. The rescue team arrived just in time, helping them all into the boat and to safety. As they sailed away from the flooded apartment, Mary looked back, feeling grateful for the bravery and love that had kept them together through the storm.

They managed to arrive at the street and saw a chaotic scene. People were rushing past, many with faces pale with fear, while others were helping those who had fallen or were injured. A young man was supporting an elderly man, and a woman was comforting a child who was crying. Despite the panic and chaos, there was a sense of unity-neighbors helping neighbors, strangers offering assistance. Anna noticed volunteers and rescue workers pushing through the crowd, and found comfort in these small acts of kindness - a brief glimmer of hope in the chaos.
In the middle of the rescue workers, Anna spotted a familiar face - her father. He was helping an injured man, his medical bag open beside him. “Dad!” she shouted, running toward him. He looked up, his face covered in dust, but his expression calm and focused.“ Stay back and keep safe,” he said, gently guiding Anna and her family to safety.“ I ‘ m helping these people. We need to stay away from the worst - hit areas.” Anna ‘ s heart swelled with relief and pride as she watched the surrounding people. Though the world around them seemed to fall apart, Anna knew they would survive the disaster with love.
