My sister even couldn’t look people in the eye or speak aloud. It wasn’t until ten that I started to 2 the differences. We were at the same school, but I never acknowledged (承认) in public that she was my sister. I worried that she would 3 my image (形象). But two years ago, something happened, changing how I thought about her. Being a sixth grader, about to leave school, my sister had to give a 4 , either in a group, or alone. Because of her inability to fit in, my sister was the only one left without a group. “I’ll sing,” she told my parents confidently. Hearing that, I was 5 . “No! She can’t do that.” I cried. My parents threw me a look and I knew it was settled (决定). Secretly I hoped that something would happen, so I wouldn’t have to watch my sister lose face. “No one knows she’s your sister. It’s fine.” I kept telling myself these 6 as I was waiting for her performance to start. The lights became less bright a minute or two later and then my 7 stood on the stage (舞台). It took about a whole minute for her to speak out her name. “Why is she taking so long?” People around me asked. I sat 8 in my seat, wishing to be somewhere else. Finally, my sister started to sing. Her voice was surprisingly 9 . I listened ever so carefully and shame (羞愧) filled my heart—how could I have questioned my sister’s abilities? I had been so wrong. Although she knew I was ashamed of her and was not willing to come to her performance, she had been kind and loving to me. This helped me realize the importance of unconditional love in a family. Mom argued with him for making our family 5 trouble. Over the years, we hardly had a talk together. Years later, Dad’s business started to do well. However, the uncomfortable 6 between Dad and me continued. Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him to carry his bag into his study. 7 I turned to leave, he said, “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb?” I looked at him for a while, and then took the comb. It made me 8 then: helping my dad clean his comb meant that he was home early to spend the evening with Mom and me. It meant a happy and loving family. When I passed the comb back to Dad, I noticed something different. Dad had wrinkles (皱纹) when he smiled, yet his smile was still as 9 as before— the smile of a father who just wanted a good life for his family. If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy. Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies seem shy. These babies are a little quieter. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic. Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families. You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don't forget— if you are shy, you are not the only one. 1.The writer leads in the topic by ________. A.nothing B.pass C.change D.DNA 3.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 4.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards to the shyness? A.Worried. B.Optimistic (乐观的). C.unwilling D.critical (批判的). Passage 2 Many people today feel stressed (感到压力) by lasting competition, often called the “rat race (内卷).” This means facing too much pressure (压力) in almost every part of life. Parents feel they must give their children the best things and opportunities. Students get caught in an educational race, feeling they need to get grades and to attend the best schools to succeed. Office workers often put in very long hours, sometimes over 10 hours a day. People push themselves extremely hard to make more money or achieve big goal believing this is the only path to a good life. However, this lasting struggle often leads to more worry and unhappiness instead of achievement. Because of this heavy pressure, some people choose a different path called “lying flat. ” They decide to stop chasing those big, stressful goals like buying an expensive house, getting the highest grades, or landing the best job. They might lose interest in working or studying hard. Instead of trying new things or learning new skills, they might just stay in their comfort zone, watching videos or playing games for long hours. This can make them feel left behind as the world changes. Sadly, this choice often leads to feeling upset and losing confidence in themselves because they aren’t moving forward. Clearly, neither the exhausting (使人精疲力尽的) “rat race” nor completely “lying flat” is a healthy or happy solution. Living only for lasting competition makes people tired, stressed, and often unhappy. On the other hand, giving up completely leads to boredom, feeling worried, and missing out on opportunities. The best way forward is to find a balanced way. We should still have dreams and goals, but we can pursue (追求) them with healthy competition. Healthy competition means trying our best, learning, and improving ourselves, but without endlessly comparing ourselves to others or pushing to the point of tiredness. It’s like playing a sport: you try to win, but you also enjoy the game and respect your teammates and opponents (对手). This balanced way allows us to make steady progress, learn new things, and achieve meaningful things, while still having time to relax, enjoy hobbies, and be happy. It helps us avoid the extreme tiredness of the “rat race” and the lack of purpose in “lying flat,” leading to a more satisfying life. 1.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The “rat race” is necessary for success in life. B.“Lying flat” is a good way to avoid stress. C.Both the “rat race” and “lying flat” have their advantages. D.A balanced way to life is the best solution. 2.What does the passage suggest about people who “lie flat”? A.They are more successful in life. B.They feel more relaxed and happy. C.They may lose confidence and feel left behind. D.They are more likely to achieve their goals. 3.What does the author mean by “healthy competition”? A.Competing with others to make more money. B.Managing to improve yourself without lasting comparison to others. C.Working extremely hard to achieve big goals. D.Trying to be the best in everything you do. 4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A.To suggest a balanced approach to life as the best solution. B.To ask people to stop competing and “lie flat.” C.To explain why the “rat race” is the only way to succeed. D.To encourage people to work harder and achieve more. Passage 3 Learning to love yourself helps you overcome (克服) challenges. Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Imagine your best friend is worried or upset, then think about how you’d support them and try to make them feel better. Self-love means giving yourself the love, care and respect you might give your friends and family. Becky Goddard-Hill, the writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says self-love means cherishing yourself at all times. “It’s speaking to yourself with kindness and encouragement, and it means taking really good care of your body and mind.” Learning to love who you are makes you believe in yourself and feel that you deserve (值得) good things — such as kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you meet challenges, they’ll be easier to overcome. Studies show that self-love can help friendships, schoolwork and health. “There is always someone looking out for you,” says Goddard-Hill, “because that person is you.” If you make a mistake, tell yourself that everyone gets things wrong sometimes instead of being angry. Then think about what you could do differently next time. Try not to compare (比较) yourself to others and remember that no one is perfect. Goddard-Hill advises to write down your good points and asking your family and friends for their thoughts. “Keep the list somewhere safe and look at it often to remind yourself you are special,” she says. Before you go to bed, think about three things that went well for you that day. “This will help you live more happily in your life,” says Goddard-Hill. Goddard-Hill also thinks it’s a good idea to have a positive (积极) self-talk three times every morning or spend 15 minutes a day for yourself. 1.What does self-love mean according to the passage? ①Being kind to yourself                 ②Caring less about others ③Cherishing yourself all the time        ④Giving yourself love, care and respect A.①②③ B.①③④ C.②③④ D.①②④ 2.In Paragraph 3, what does Goddard-Hill mean? A.Friends and family will always support you. B.Self-love means being your own supporter. C.People should ask others for help often. D.Everyone needs to look after others. 3.How can you practice loving yourself better? A.By correcting your mistakes. B.By being angry at yourself. C.By comparing yourself to others. D.By looking at the list of good points. 4.What’s the purpose of the passage? A.To explain how to make new friends B.To teach people how to improve their friendship. C.To encourage people to love and care for themselves. D.To discuss the importance of being kind to others. Passage 4 ①You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps you do things like making plans and controlling your feelings. It can help you do better in different areas like school, sports and work. ②Do you sometimes talk to yourself when you think? It can be really awkward (尴尬的) if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself is good for you in many ways. ③When encouraging words come out of your mouth, it adds to self-confidence (自信心). A 2009 study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group. ④Talking to yourself, especially in the third person (第三人称), can also help you deal with bad feelings. “Referring to (指代) yourself in the third person leads you to think about yourself more similar to how you think about others,” said Jason Moser, a professor from Michigan State University, the US. This can help you see things in a different way, especially when you’re feeling sad or angry. ⑤Self-talk also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to remember things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud could think of the information the best, researchers said in their study published (发布) in the magazine Memory. 1.For the brain, which of the following does thinking not help with? A.Planning a trip. B.Being good at basketball. C.Controlling feelings. D.Talking to yourself. 2.According to paragraph 3, what can self-talk help to do? A.Find out who the best players are. B.Develop a player’s skills. C.Improve one’s confidence. D.Change a person’s habits. 3.Which way of self-talk can help people deal with bad feelings? A.Is there anything we can do for her? B.I have tried my best. Just do what I can. C.What can Annie do to make the situation better? D.You are the strongest person I’ve ever met. 4.Which of the following shows how the passage goes? A. B. C. D. Passage 5    It’s very important to know yourself. It’s helpful to choose your own jobs in the future. Everyone goes through mental and physical changes during adolescence (青春期). If you know yourself, you’ll deal with different kinds of stress more easily and you’ll be more successful as well. Although adolescence is difficult, it’ll be much easier if you try to manage your feelings better. Here are a few skills for you to deal with your feelings. Know about your feelings What feelings are you experiencing? For example, are you sad, stressed, angry, joyful or excited? You must know your own feelings now. Accept your feelings Many people don’t want others to know their feelings. They always hide their true feelings. They think these feelings will go away over time. But they aren’t right. Remind yourself that it’s OK to feel your feelings. Be familiar with your feelings How to understand your own feelings better? You can record how you’re feeling in the morning, afternoon and at night on a notebook. And you should also write down the changes in your body at different times. Express your feelings Expressing your feelings in the right way is one of the best ways to make them disappear. You can cry, exercise, go shopping or talk to someone you trust. But no matter how you express your feelings, you can’t hurt yourself or others. In your life, you may experience many different feelings. But as long as you deal with these feelings in the right way, you’ll be able to live comfortably. 1.What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about? A.How to choose your jobs. B.Some changes in adolescence. C.Some skills to deal with your feelings. D.The importance of knowing yourself and how to make adolescence easier. 2.How is adolescence according to the passage? A.Happy. B.Excited. C.Difficult. D.Lively. 3.What’s the structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph) A.P1 / P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 B.P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 / P6 C.P1, P2 / P3, P4, P5 / P6 D.P1 / P2, P3, P4, P5 / P6 4.What’s the best title for the text? A.A few skills to deal with your feelings B.How to spend adolescence C.How to express yourself better D.How to deal with different kinds of stress more easily Passage 6 In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Zurich told 50 people they’d be receiving about $100. Half of the people were asked to spend that money on themselves, and half were asked to spend it on someone they knew. Before giving out any money, the researchers brought everyone into the lab and asked them to think about a friend they’d like to give a gift to and how much they would spend. They then performed functional MRI scans (扫描) to get to know activity in three parts of the brain related to social behavior, generosity (慷慨), happiness and decision-making. Their choices and their brain activity seemed to depend on how they had promised to spend the money earlier. Those who had promised to spend money on other people were likely to make more generous decisions throughout the experiment (实验). They also had more interaction between the parts of the brain related to altruism (无私) and happiness, and they reported higher levels of happiness after the experiment was over. Another piece of good news was that planning to give away just a little bit of money had the same effects on happiness as giving away a lot. “At least in our study, the amount spent did not matter,” says lead author Philippe Tobler. “Even little things have a beneficial effect—like bringing coffee to one’s workmates.” “It’s not yet clear how long these warm feelings last after being generous. But studies have shown that older people who are kind more likely to have better health,” says Tobler, and another research has suggested that spending money on others can be effective at lowering blood pressure. “Moreover, there is a positive connection between helping others and life expectancy(预期寿命),” he adds. Next time you think that the best way to make yourself feel better is to buy yourself a treat, consider that the opposite is likely true. “It is worth giving it a try, even if you think it would not work,” Tobler says. “Repeated practice is probably needed so that giving becomes second nature.” 1.What happened to those promising to spend money on other people? A.They were much happier. B.They had less brain activity. C.They were slower at making decisions. D.They experienced higher levels of stress. 2.What does Tobler want to explain by mentioning bringing coffee to workmates? A.It isn't hard to behave generously. B.Being generous will pay off in the end. C.The amount of kindness did not matter. D.Small acts of generosity can be seen everywhere. 3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us? A.Ways to show generosity. B.Health benefits of being generous. C.Reasons for performing acts of generosity. D.Influences generous people have on others. 4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Understanding the magic of the Brain Through Generous Acts B.The Deep Effect of Money: Self-centered or Altruism? C.Spending Money on Others Can Bring People Happiness D.Health Benefits Hidden Behind Generous Spending Habits Passage 7 Sometimes the hardest thing about feelings is sharing them with others. Sharing your feelings helps you both when your feelings are good and when they aren’t so good. Sharing also helps you get close to people who you care about and who care about you. Before you can share your feelings with someone, you have to know what feelings you have. Making a list of your feelings can help. You can do this in your head or by writing them down on a piece of paper, or even by drawing pictures. If you’re feeling sad, worried or upset, you’d better tell someone. If you keep such feelings locked inside, they can even make you sick! So if you talk with someone who cares about you, like your mom or dad, you will start to feel better. But what if you don’t want to talk with your mom or dad? Then find another trusted adult. Maybe this person can help you talk with your mom and dad about your problem. When you have known who you can talk with, you need to pick a time and a place to talk. If you think it’s hard to say what’s in your mind, write it down on a piece of paper. If the person doesn’t understand what you mean, try explaining it in a different way. Is there anything you think could be done to make things better? If so, say it. 1.Sometimes sharing feelings with others is the most ________ thing about feelings. A.important B.popular C.useless D.difficult 2.Para. 3 mainly tells us ________. A.how to say what we think about B.where we can talk about our feelings C.why we need to share our feelings D.what we need to talk with parents about 3.What advice does the passage give for talking about feelings well? A.Only talk about your feelings when things are already better. B.Write down your thoughts if it’s hard to say them clearly. C.Always speak to strangers about your problems. D.Don’t explain your feelings again if others don’t understand. 4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.It isn’t helpful that you share your good feelings with others. B.Keeping bad feelings locked inside can make you sick. C.Sharing feelings helps you to get close to people. D.You’ll feel better if you share your bad feelings with someone. 题型3 阅读表达 Passage 1 Do you feel sad or lonely at the end of a day? Many of us look for ways to make ourselves feel better, perhaps by exercising, cooking or reading. But experts (专家) say keeping a diary can improve our health. “Just write down your thoughts and feelings and then you will understand them more clearly,” said Julia Samuel, an expert who helps people with their mental (精神的) health problems. “Talking to your diary by writing things down can be as good as talking to another person when you feel bad.” Keeping a diary is also good for people’s physical (身体的) health. A new study has found that people who keep a diary make fewer doctor visits, because it helps them become more relaxed. Spending too much time on the smart phone may cause stress (压力). So keep away from the smart phone and keep a diary from now on. The more time you spend in writing, the less time you will spend on your smart phone. Experts advise people to write something in the diary every day, or at least every week. “Keeping a diary is one of my relaxations. If you want to write something, you’d better find a place where you feel relaxed, such as a teahouse or a cafe,” said Samuel. 1.In experts’ opinion, is keeping a diary helpful for health? 2.If people keep a diary, why do they make fewer doctor visits? 3.According to Samuel, what’s the better place for writing something? 4.Show your way to make yourself feel better when feeling bad. Write 30 words or more. Passage 2 Feeling joy is good for you, not just because you’re happy in the moment. It can be saved and used again. When you feel joyful, you’re in a positive mood (情绪), which helps you deal with challenges and solve problems. Suzy Reading, a psychologist, says experiencing joy benefits your health. It protects you from illness, and reduces pain, worry and stress. Joy spreads quickly, benefiting not only you but also those around you. A joy journal is a special place for you to record anything that brings you joy. It’s your journal, so you can put whatever you like in it. Taking time to make a note of what’s giving you joy helps you pay attention to that experience and draw even more happiness from it. Suzy Reading says your joy journal can help you remember happier times when you are feeling a bit sad, lonely, and worried. Turning the pages can help those same feelings of joy flood back, making you feel better. It can remind you that this moment will pass and joy will come again soon. How do you keep a joy journal? Choose a notebook and decorate (装饰) the cover. It is up to you how often you add to it—perhaps every day after school or only at weekends. You can keep all your joyful things together or divide your journal into areas such as family, friends, school, and hobbies. To best express yourself, you can write, draw, use colorful pens, and stick things in. In your joy journal, you can write lists of your favorite things: your favorite foods, TV shows, or animals, and what you like about them. You can record a moment from each day that gave you joy: who was there, what happened, and what you could see, hear, and smell. This will help you feel the joy again and remember it more easily. You could also make a joy journal with your family to record what makes you all happy. Perhaps you are too busy to keep a joy journal every day, or you have other ways to treasure your happy moments, such as social media posts and video diaries. These are really good ways, but if possible, try writing down the things that bring a smile to your face in your joy journal. 1.How does experiencing joy benefit your health? 2.What is a joy journal? 3.How can you best express yourself in a joy journal? 4.Would you like to keep a joy journal? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.) Passage 3 Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (栀子花) was sent to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flower shops were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to discover the sender’s name and was just very pleased with the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper. But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged this imagining. She’d ask me if there was someone for whom I had done a special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man whom I looked after when he was ill. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy. One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt very sad and didn’t want to go to the coming graduation dance at all. And I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In truth, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia – lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery. My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming. 1.What color was the flower the writer received? ____________________________________________________ 2.How did the writer feel when she daydreamed about the giver? ____________________________________________________ 3.Why didn’t the writer want to go to the graduation dance? ____________________________________________________ 4. Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term in your classes and now it’s the time to prove what you have learned. In fact, it’s common for most of us to have exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing. If we have proper (适当的) stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can help us to focus (聚焦) on the preparation of exams. However, if we can’t deal with stress well, we may make things worse. When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some of them stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! But the most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path (路线)— stay calm, eat healthy and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one! So, what should you do? Set a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally, cat healthy foods that fuel (提供能量) your body and mind. It does no good to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on exams. That’s not true. Instead, just see the exams as another difficulty you will overcome (克服). You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors! 1.When is the most stressful time of the year for the students? 2.What is the most important thing to remember when studying? 3.Why should we get plenty of sleep during exam time? 4.What do you think of exam stress? What should students do to deal with exam stress? (Give at least two points.) Passage 5 Farming has always been a countryside thing. But now, farms are coming to the balconies (阳台) of city flats. According to a recent report, sales of vegetable seeds (种子) on the Internet in the first quarter of 2022 doubled compared with the same period in 2021. Of these buyers, most were born after 1995. Zhang Chao from Anhui Province is one young “city farmer”. The senior high school student said his love for planting was formed in primary school, when he lived with his grandpa in the countryside. He learned to grow vegetables from his grandpa, who has been a farmer for life. Though farming takes hard work, Zhang said he felt excited when he saw seeds turn into plants. Now Zhang still keeps up his hobby with a balcony garden. He grows strawberries and carrots. “Growing fruits and vegetables not only brings delicious food, but it also reminds me of the happy times with my grandpa.” said Zhang. Unlike Zhang, Fang Minke from Shenzhen thinks that planting a garden is a good way to relax and develop patience. The 16 - year- old girl sometimes felt stressed (压力大的) so she started planting vegetables on her balcony in 2021. Most of the seeds were given to her by friends. Not knowing what plants the seeds were from, she just planted them and waited patiently. After half a year, her balcony became a small garden. Every day it takes her long hours to do homework. Then she likes to walk around her balcony garden. “Seeing different colors and breathing fresh air, I feel closer to nature.” Fang said. Planting vegetables is now more than just a way to live. It also brings joy to the lives of the young. 1.According to a recent report, who are the main buyers of vegetable seeds on the Internet? 2.What does Zhang Chao grow in his balcony garden? 3.Why did Fang Minke start planting vegetables on her balcony? 4.Would you like to be a “city farmer”? 根据第二段中的“This can make them feel left behind as the world changes. Sadly, this choice often leads to feeling upset and losing confidence in themselves because they aren’t moving forward.”可知,选择“躺平”的人可能会随着世界的变化而感到被落下,并且因为不前进而感到沮丧和失去自信。因此,选项C“他们可能会失去信心并感到被落下”符合题意。故选C。 3.词义猜测题。根据最后一段“Healthy competition means trying our best, learning, and improving ourselves, but without endlessly comparing ourselves to others or pushing to the point of tiredness.” A。 Passage 3 Learning to love yourself helps you overcome (克服) challenges. (Please give two reasons.) 【答案】1.It protects from illness and reduces pain, worry and stress. 2.A joy journal is a special place for you to record anything that brings you joy. 3.You can write, draw, use colorful pens, and stick things in. 4.Yes, I’d like to. I had a hard time with my math in Grade Eight. One day, I got a very low score and felt sad. In the evening, I couldn’t hold back my tears and told my dad about my trouble. He comforted me and studied my math test paper carefully. Then he spent about an hour helping me with all the difficult problems. He was so patient and his eyes were full of encouragement. I was greatly moved because I learned that no matter how hard things get, my parents always love me and can give me as much support as possible. [亮点词汇] ①hold back 忍住 ②trouble 麻烦 ③spend time doing sth. 花费时间做某事 ④help sb. with sth. 帮助某人做某事 ⑤encouragement 鼓励 [高分句型] I was greatly moved because I learned that no matter how hard things get, my parents always love me and can give me as much support as possible.
