Passage 4
Dealing with a nosebleed might seem simple. But recently, the British Red Cross asked parents with young children how to help a child with a nosebleed. About 65 percent of parents did not 1 the correct action to help.
Learning what to do if a little one has a nosebleed will help you 2 the situation quickly and calmly. Here, Claire shares the story of how she helped her daughter when her 3 was bleeding.
On a very hot and sunny day, Claire took her daughter Bella, aged almost three and a half, to the park. On the way home, Bella fell 4 in the car.
When they got home, Claire found something was wrong 5 Bella.
“While I 6 her down, blood started pouring from her nose. It was all over her face and down her neck and that made me scared,” Claire said.
Having already learned first aid, Claire knew 7 to do.
“Bella got nervous because of all the 8 . I sat her up and leaned (v.倾斜) her forward and pressed the sides of her nose,” Claire said.
“I knew this wasn’t wrong, as leaning her forward would stop the blood from going into her airway or stomach.”
9 , Bella’s nosebleed stopped after a few minutes.
Claire was glad that she still remembered the key 10 to help children with a nosebleed: to pinch (v.捏) the soft part of their nose and ask them to lean forward.

Passage 1
Jack Dawson is a 10-year-old boy from England. He became interested in being a paramedic (医务辅助人员) when he was only two years old. At the age of three, while other kids were playing around, Jack was busy practising performing CPR (进行心肺复苏) on his teddy bears. At the same time, as he was learning to speak, his parents taught him first aid skills (急救技巧).
When Jack turned seven, he started teaching first aid classes. He teaches people of all ages. He always tells them, “If I can save lives, then you can!” He shows them how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator (除颤器) to save lives. His classes are really popular. Sometimes, 20 to 40 people come to his classes, and sometimes even 5!
Jack also shares first aid skills online. People are often very surprised to see such a young boy teaching life-saving skills. But they really like learning from him because he explains things so well.
In the future, Jack hopes to become a paramedic. He dreams of wearing the uniform and helping people in need. With his hard work and his big heart for helping others, there is no doubt that Jack will make his dream come true and bring hope to many more people.

D. The importance of first aid
Passage 2
When you cough or sneeze, you’d better turn your head away from others and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, “Excuse me.”
This seems so simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs (细菌) along to everything and everyone they touch.
If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass through first, then you can walk through. If the door opens by pushing, hold the door after you pass through.
After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and think of others. Once they’ve been told, they’re halfway there.
When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are going to enter a lift, the underground, or a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before we enter.
After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was in the subways. I was even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places, people made effort to make way for others. On moving stairs, everyone stood to the right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side and allow others to exit before they would begin to enter.
1.When you cough or sneeze, you should ________.
A.touch everything B.cover your mouth
C.point out to the kids D.pass the germs to others
2.If you come to a door and someone is following you, you’d better ________.
A.hold the door B.pass through C.close the door D.stand to the side
3.Why should we stand to the right of moving stairs?
A.Because it’s dangerous to stand to the left.
B.Because it’s a traffic rule which we must follow.
C.Because we must wait for others to move first.
D.Because we should make way for people in a hurry.
4.From the passage we can know the writer is a _________.
A.doctor B.traveler C.parent D.teacher
Passage 3
It’s just another day at school. You and your friend are talking in the classroom. Suddenly, your friend’s nose starts to bleed. What would you do? Would you be scared? Or would you do something to help your friend?
In daily life, we run into emergencies (紧急情况) now and then. Nosebleeds are just one kind of emergency. But if you learn some basic first-aid (急救) skills, you can help people during emergencies and maybe even save their lives.
The second Saturday of September is World First Aid Day, which will fall on Sept. 13 in 2025. Right now, it is a good time for us to learn more about first aid.
First aid, as its name tells us, refers to the first steps you can take to care for someone who’s hurt. It includes keeping him safe and staying calm. It also includes getting help by telling other people or calling 120.
Every year in China, 3.2 million people die in emergencies. That’s six people per minute on average. Doctors say that the first 10 minutes after an accident can make the difference between life and death. This is why it’s important for us to learn first aid.
CPR (心肺复苏术) is one of the most useful first-aid skills. It can help people who’ve got cardiac arrest (心脏骤停). But if you want to perform CPR, you need to learn how to do it properly. You can take lessons offered by the Red Cross Society or some hospitals.
1.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By giving data. B.By making a report.
C.By doing a survey. D.By giving an example.
2.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.CPR. B.Cardiac arrest. C.Red Cross Society. D.First aid.
3.Which of the following is TRUE about the first aid?
A.Everyone is encouraged to perform CPR.
B.First aid includes keeping people nearby safe.
C.CPR is the most useful for people who are hurt.
D.The first 10 minutes after an accident is important.
4.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.Doctors Can Help B.First Aid Matters
C.CPR Works D.Emergencies Happen
Passage 4
Having a bloody nose can make some people nervous, but in most cases, nosebleeds (流鼻血) are not serious and easy to stop. Around 60% of people will experience a bloody nose in their lifetime. Nosebleeds are most common in children from 2 to 10 years and in adults aged 50-1.
Common causes of nosebleeds include dry air and wounds to the nose or other parts of the head. Blowing your nose too often when you have a cold can also lead to nosebleeds. You probably already know how to stop a bloody nose right away, but it’s important to do it properly and safely.
Always sit up straight when your nose is bleeding, and never lie on your back. One of the biggest mistakes in first aid is that you lean (倾斜) back with a bloody nose, but the best thing to do is to lean forward. The blood needs to go somewhere, and if the person leans back or lies down, it will most likely go down his throat, possibly causing choking (窒息). And try not to put tissues (纸巾) into your nose.
Pinching the nose properly stops or slows the bleeding. Hold the nose for at least five minutes. Do not let go to check for bleeding until at least the first five minutes are up. If you can, keep the pressure on for longer. After five minutes, see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, pinch again, but keep it up for 10 minutes this time.
Avoid activities such as heavy lifting, blowing or picking your nose for a day after the nosebleed has stopped. Remember that if you can’t stop the nosebleed with these methods, see a doctor immediately.
1.Who may most easily have nosebleeds?
A.A 6-month-old baby. B.An 8-year-old boy. C.A 15-year-old girl.
2.When your nose is bleeding, you should ________.
A.lean back with a bloody nose
B.sit up straight and lean forward
C.put tissues into the bloody nose
3.What does the underlined word “Pinching” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Holding. B.Blowing. C.Leaning.
4.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
Passage 5
①An emergency is a sudden situation that can harm someone’s health, safety, or property. Knowing how to handle it can make a big difference. The key is to stay calm and act wisely.
②First, don’t panic. If you feel scared or confused, stop and take deep breaths. This helps you think clearly instead of acting out of fear. Staying calm also helps others around you feel less afraid. Tell yourself you can manage the situation. Look around carefully to understand what’s happening before you do anything.
③Next, decide what kind of emergency it is. Is someone hurt, like from a car accident or a fall? Or is it something like a fire or a flood that could damage a building? For example, if someone is bleeding a lot or can’t breathe, it’s a medical emergency. If it’s a fire or a chemical spill, it might be a danger to everyone nearby. Knowing this helps you choose the right action.
④Then, call for help. In the USA, dial 911. In other places, use the local emergency number. Tell the person on the phone where you are and what’s wrong. Answer their questions clearly—they need information to send the right help fast. Even if you can’t talk much, stay on the line so they can find you.
⑤If it’s safe, help others. If someone is in danger, guide them to a safe place. But it’s too risky, wait for trained people to step in. If someone is hurt and awake, talk to him. Ask their name or tell them help is coming to keep them calm.
⑥Emergencies can change quickly, so keep watching the situation. By staying calm and acting smart, you can help yourself and others stay safe.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Someone’s health. B.An emergency.
C.A social situation. D.Safety or property.
2.How does the writer support the idea of staying calm in Paragraph 2?
A.By explaining its benefits. B.By comparing it to panic.
C.By telling a personal story. D.By giving examples of emergencies.
3.Why is it important to decide the type of emergency?
A.To know what action to take. B.To stay calm and think clearly. C.To tell others what happened. D.To call the right phone number.
4.What should you tell the person when you call for help?
A.Your name and age. B.How many people are hurt. C.Where you are and what’s wrong. D.What time the emergency started.
Passage 6
One day, I was walking on the road, with my friend Tina following. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise from behind. I looked back and found Tina lying on the ground. I quickly helped her up and asked if she was OK. Luckily, Tina wasn’t hurt badly. She cleaned her knees and said, “I was using my phone and not paying attention to the road.”
When you cross the street, it’s important to know where to look. First, look left, then right, and then left again. Start crossing if there’s no traffic. Keep watching for cars as you cross and look over your shoulder for turning cars. However, like Tina, not all of us follow these rules all the time. China Youth Daily says over 70% of people use their phones while walking on the road. These phone users are known as “smartphone zombie (低头族)”.
Cities around the world are trying to help people stop this bad habit. Honolulu passed a law in 2017. Police can fine (罚款) people using phones while crossing the street $15-99. Two years later, Wenzhou had the same rule.
My friend Tina was “lucky”. She didn’t get fined and only hurt her knees. However, not all “smartphone zombies” are so lucky. Always remember: Don’t use your phone while walking on the road, or you may face a fine and even put your life in danger.

3.Why do some cities pass laws to fine “smartphone zombies”?
A.To increase government revenue.
B.To help people stop this bad habit.
C.To promote the use of hands-free devices.
D.To encourage people to buy better phones.
4.If you see someone using their phone while walking on the road, what should you say?
A.“Keep using your phone, it’s not a big deal.”
B.“Use your phone when you’re near the sidewalk.”
C.“Be careful. You might get fined or hurt yourself.”
D.“It’s OK as long as you’re not crossing the street.”
Passage 7
If you see someone fall, perhaps because of a heart attack (心脏病发作), what can you do before the doctor comes?
Chen Wenqiaochu set a good example to us when he was fourteen. He did CPR (心肺复苏术) on a person at his school, saving the man’s life for us. According to doctors, the first four minutes of a heart attack is very important, when CPR is the most helpful in saving a person’s life. On August 24, 2020, the Chinese government asked all public schools to give first-aid courses, including CPR training.
CPR is not hard to grasp. To do CPR, all we need to learn is how to decide if a person has a heart attack, where to press on the patient’s chest (胸), and how to blow air through the mouth and into the lungs (肺). However, less than one percent of Chinese adults have learned CPR, while many have never heard of it.
A 2019 study found although 64.6% of schools have provided health education courses, the teaching results are not good. Zhao Shengyu, 18, a student, described her first experience of learn CPR in class. “I found I had made lots of mistakes in the acts after I was trained in a medical school,” she said.
Most countries have known the importance of CPR training. In 2017, more than half of Americans received CPR training. Switzerland, Germany, France and some other countries also give CPR training.
1.How can we help a patient with a heart attack during the first four minutes?
A.Send him to the hospital. B.Ask him to save himself first.
C.Do CPR on him at once. D.Call the hospital and wait for the doctor.
2.What does the underlined word “grasp” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Spread widely. B.Understand fully.
C.Repeat carefully. D.Think differently.
3.Which is the right order of time of the following facts?
① Chen Wenqiaochu saved a person at his school.
② All public schools were asked to give CPR courses in China.
③ 64.6% of schools provided health education courses.
④ More than half of Americans received CPR training.
A.①③④② B.①④③② C.②①④③ D.③②①④
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.More good first-aid courses are needed in schools.
B.All schools in China must give first-aid courses.
C.Nearly one percent of Chinese don’t know about CPR.
D.Zhao Shengyu thinks first-aid courses are popular at school.
5.What does the passage mainly talk about?

Passage 1
Diana was shopping in a busy store after work one evening. Just five minutes before closing time, she heard a shop worker saying, “Someone’s having a seizure (疾病突发).” Walking quickly towards the shop worker, Diana saw a shopper on the ground. She was lying on the floor, jerking uncontrollably (控制不住地抽搐). A small group of people crowded to help the woman and a shop worker called an ambulance.
Diana knew that she could use what she had learned from her first aid training to help as well. “The seizure was very different from the way people usually move,” Diana said. “The woman’s movements were so powerful that her glasses flew off her face.”
Knowing it was important to keep the woman safe, one of the workers brought over a worker jacket and put it under the woman’s head so she wouldn’t hurt herself.
“The seizure probably lasted only a few minutes, but it seemed much longer while it was going on,” Diana said, “when the jerking stopped, a man helped turn the woman onto her side. I then tilted (倾斜) her head back to help her keep breathing. After the seizure, the woman seemed not to be able to understand what we were saying and couldn’t speak. Luckily, I learned that this could happen after a seizure and it might take some time for people to get back to feel like their normal selves. It was such a relief (宽慰) when she finally answered that she was OK.”
By this time, the ambulance was on its way, so the other shoppers who had helped left.
“As I was leaving, one of the store’s workers said, ‘Thank you for your kindness.’ I was very touched by her words, and I told her that I’d learned first aid in case something like this ever happened, and now it had,” Diana said. “Although the accident left me feeling very shaken, I was glad I knew what to do to help.”

2.What was wrong with the woman on the ground?
3.How did Diana help the woman?
4.What can we learn from Diana’s experience? (at least 2 points)
Passage 2
Accidents often happen in schools around the world. For this reason, the ICRC (红十字国际委员会) began its education program in 2017. First aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kalida is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan (阿塞拜疆). She took part in ICRC’s first aid training in 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in accidents everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since attending the training, Kalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught some students and her cousins some of the skills. “The training is important, ” Kalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”
Marisela teaches at a school in Venezuela (委内瑞拉). The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training was to stay calm in order to make her safe at the moment. The training has made her a strong and confident person and an excellent first aider (急救员). She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides, they have taught their students some first aid skills.
Thanks to the ICRC’s first aid training, many students and teachers, like Kalida and Marisela, have become professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience (韧性) within themselves.
1.Why did the ICRC begin its education program around the world?
2.When did Kalida take part in ICRC’s first aid training?
3.What was the most important thing Marisela learned from the training?
4.What do you think of the training and why?
Passage 3
Natural disasters can hit anywhere, anytime, and being prepared is the key to staying safe. Earthquakes, typhoons (台风), and floods are common natural disasters that can cause terrible damage (破坏) and bring serious threats (威胁) to safety.
Earthquakes suddenly shake the ground, often without warning. To stay safe during an earthquake, people had better “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” until the shaking stops. You can find a strong table to hide under and hold on.
Typhoons, known as hurricanes or cyclones in other parts of the world, can lead to strong winds and too much rain. Before a typhoon arrives, storing necessary things like food, water, and batteries is important.
Floods can happen when rivers run over because of too much rain. To prepare well, avoid building homes in the areas where floods often happen and place important electrical appliances (电器) up off the ground in your home. Having an emergency plan is also a must.
By understanding these disasters and taking action, communities and people can reduce the risk of harm and recover (恢复) more quickly after disasters happen.
1.How many kinds of natural disasters are mentioned in the text?
2.Why are people advised to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” until the shaking stops?
3.What can typhoons cause according to the text?
4.Which other disaster do you know and how can you keep safe in it? Write 30 words or more.
Passage 4
This great book, The Great Penguin Rescue (救援), is a true story.
On June 23, 2000, a ship called MV Treasure sank (沉没) near Cape Town, South Africa. More than a thousand tons of oil (原油) went into the ocean. It polluted the natural home of nearly half of the total world population of African penguins. About 20,000 African penguins were covered with oil and as a result couldn’t swim or walk properly. It was very possible that they would die. A huge rescue began, and it lasted for twelve weeks. Up to 1,000 people a day came to help save these birds. The rescue was successful because 45,000 people offered to give their time and energy, for free, to the project.
The rescue was a success, but it wasn’t easy. First, people had to catch the penguins and took them to a special rescue centre. When the penguins got there, they stayed in a quiet place for several days so that they could get used to their new “home”. During this time and the next three months, people had to feed the penguins. It wasn’t easy to find enough fish to feed 20,000 penguins, and feeding penguins wasn’t easy either: the penguins have very sharp beaks and many people got wounds (伤口) on their arms from penguin bites.
After that, they had to take the oil off the penguins’ feathers. People tried to wash each penguin and then made it dry. They did it again and again until there was no more oil on the penguin. It took two people at least an hour just to clean one penguin. Then they put the penguins in pools to swim every day until their feathers got well completely. “The Great Penguin Rescue” is the world’s biggest rescue of live animals. It’s a moving story because so many people took part in the rescue and showed that they really cared about saving wild animals.
1.How many African penguins were covered with oil?
2.What were the two problems with feeding the penguins?
3.How long did it take two people to clean one penguin?

Passage 5
Hi, I am Tom. I have some experiences about the importance of first-aid training. One day, I was having lunch in the park with my grandparents, my sister and her one-year-old daughter. Rose was sitting on my sister's knees and eating. My sister was watching her carefully because her teeth just started to grow. Then my sister's phone started to ring. She left Rose with my grandparents so she could focus on the call. I did not think anything about this and started to play a game on my phone.
Suddenly I heard Rose coughing. I looked up and found that Rose was breathing difficultly. My grandparents were standing up and looking worried.
"We just gave her one nut," my grandfather said.
Immediately I ran to get my sister. She has had first-aid training and knew just what to do. She used the Heimlich Manoeuvre (海姆利克氏急救法), which pushed the nut out of Rose's throat so she could breathe again. Accidents happen quickly and can cost a loved one's life if you do not know how to respond (做出反应). After that scary day, I decided to take first-aid classes. My training has since helped me save a life too.
One morning, my father was up a ladder (梯子) painting our house. I heard a loud noise and rushed outside. He was lying on the ground. He must have hit his head because his eyes were closed. I was scared but knew what to do. I moved his body into the recovery position (复苏体位), put a blanket over him and called an ambulance. If you get knocked out, your brain cannot help you breathe or stay warm. The fall could have caused some bleeding (失血) so the recovery position helps the throat clear. The ambulance men said I had done the right thing.
I think everyone should have first-aid training.
1.Is it helpful to take first-aid classes for Tom?
2.Why did Rose cough and breathe difficulty?
3.What will happen if you don't know how to respond to accidents?
4.Why did Tom keep his father in the recovery position?
5.According to the passage, what advice do you think Tom will give us?

A.To know what action to take. B.To stay calm and think clearly. C.To tell others what happened. D.To call the right phone number.

【答案】1.Three/3. 2.To stay safe during an earthquake. 3.Strong winds and too much rain. 4.Fire. When a fire breaks out, we should keep calm and call 119 as soon as possible. Do not take the elevator or stairs. Also, we should cover our mouths and noses with a wet cloth to protect ourselves from the harm of thick smoke. (开放性试题,答案合理即可)

4.What do you think of the rescue? Why do you think so?
【答案】1.About 20,000. 2.It wasn’t easy to find enough fish to feed so many penguins and the penguins had very sharp beaks. 3.At least an hour. 4.It is great because it shows that people care about wild animals.
【导语】本文主要介绍了2000年的一场沉船事故导致非洲的众多企鹅被原油覆盖,人们对企鹅展开积极救援的真实故事。
1.根据“About 20,000 African penguins were covered with oil”可知,大约有2万只非洲企鹅被石油覆盖。故填About 20,000.
2.根据“It wasn’t easy to find enough fish to feed 20,000 penguins, and feeding penguins wasn’t easy either: the penguins have very sharp beaks and many people got wounds on their arms from penguin bites.”可知,要找到足够喂养2万只企鹅的鱼并不容易,企鹅的喙非常锋利,喂养企鹅也不容易。故填It wasn’t easy to find enough fish to feed so many penguins and the penguins had very sharp beaks.
3.根据“It took two people at least an hour just to clean one penguin.”可知,清理一只企鹅,需要花费两人至少一小时的时间。故填At least an hour.
4.本题是开放性试题,答案言之有理即可。故填It is great because it shows that people care about wild animals.
【答案】1.Yes, it is. 2.Because she had one nut which stuck in her throat. 3.It will cost a loved one's life. 4.Because it can help the throat clear. 5.He will advise us to have first-aid training.
【分析】本文主要讲述了作者通过急救训练救了家人生命的经历以及感受。
1.细节理解题。根据第4大段“My training has since helped me save a life too.”我的训练也帮助我救了一条生命。可知,急救课对Tom有帮助。故答案填Yes, it is.
2.细节理解题。根据第3大段“"We just gave her one nut," my grandfather said.”我爷爷说,我们就给了她一个坚果。可知,是因为吃了坚果,以及下文“which pushed the nut out of Rose's throat”坚果卡在了喉咙里。故答案填Because she had one nut which stuck in her throat.
3.细节理解题。根据第4大段“Accidents happen quickly and can cost a loved one's life if you do not know how to respond (做出反应).”事故发生得很快,可能会使你所爱的人丧命,如果你不知道怎么做出反应。故答案填It will cost a loved one's life.
4.细节理解题。根据第5大段“The fall could have caused some bleeding (失血) so the recovery position helps the throat clear.”这个跌落可能引起了失血,所以这个复苏体位能帮助清理咽喉。可知,复苏体位能帮助清理咽喉。故答案填Because it can help the throat clear.
5.细节理解题。根据第6大段“I think everyone should have first-aid training”我觉得每个人应该接受急救培训。可知,Tom建议我们接受急救培训。故答案填He will advise us to have first-aid training.

Dear Peter,
I’m very happy to share something about keeping safe on the way to school with you. I often go to school by underground. The reason is that it’s fast and not affected by traffic jams. Also, it’s less dangerous compared to riding an e-scooter on busy roads.
To keep safe on the road, my advice is to always be attentive and follow traffic rules. If you must use an e-scooter, wear a helmet and reflective clothing to increase visibility. Also, avoid riding at night or in bad weather conditions.
