Unit 3 Fit for life 医疗健康 话题阅读精练 单元引言解读 The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head. For over 1,800 years, doctors have used silk to sew wounds. Now, biomedical engineers are using it to make different types of medical implants(植入物). Doctors like silk for a variety of reasons. First, silk is a natural material that will break down in the body over time. So any implanted parts made of silk don’t have to be removed by surgery. Plus, not many people are sensitive to it. The materials currently used to make silk parts are made of proteins called silk fibroin. They are typically dissolved(溶解) in water until needed. But like all proteins, silk proteins can break down over time. Besides, all that water adds a lot of weight and volume to the silk materials as they’re stored, which makes those materials expensive to ship from place to place. David Kaplan from Tutts University and his colleagues set out to solve those problems. First, they put the silk proteins into salt. Next, they added water to the mixture. They then added a chemical called liquid nitrogen. Afterward, they put the icy mix into a place where the air pressure was very low. That combination of very low temperature and pressure caused water to disappear. Finally, the researchers turned the freeze-dried material into a powder. Powdered silk could help make really strong medical implants (such as the tools used to hold a broken bone together), which is a great breakthrough in the medical field. Besides, being biocompatible(生物相容的) is just the icing on the cake. It enables powdered silk to have another possible use: putting drugs into the implants. The implants could slowly release a drug over time. That way, patients might not need to take pills or get painful injections. Powdered silk is easy to work with, too. It is chemically stable and can last up to two years on the shelf. Plus, it’s lightweight because a lot of the water has been removed. So it doesn’t cost as much to ship the material. 1. Some of them said it was because financial barriers kept them from seeing a doctor. But almost a majority of them said it was because health care was too far or difficult to get to. To address this problem, the Wyoming Center on Aging at the University of Wyoming created a program called Healthy U. Based on a program originally developed at Stanford University, it supports people with a chronic disease and their caregivers by teaching self-management skills and offering a support group. “In a rural area, if someone can manage their own health better and go to the doctor less often, then that’s a win for everybody,” says Janet Korpela, who works for Healthy U as program development specialist and runs workshops with volunteers for the program. “The volunteers, called ‘leaders’, don’t need a medical background and they just need to be willing to do the 40 hours of free training. Then they will go back into their communities to teach patients living with chronic conditions how to better manage their health,” she says. “Over the course of six weeks, volunteers lead Healthy U participants in weekly meetings. Each meeting focuses on a single topic, like how to make the most of a visit to the doctor. There’s also time set aside in each week for participants to talk about their small weekly goals. That way participants can celebrate their successes sometimes. It’s also an opportunity for them to brainstorm solutions with their peers when they struggle.” Marcia Ory, a professor and public health researcher, published a paper on how chronic disease self-management programs work. “It’s effective because most health happens at home,” she says. “Basically you teach people how to set small goals for healthy living. You teach them how to problem-solve. The program is an especially good fit for rural patients since it can be delivered where people live. And the population is less, but the need is just as great.” 1. What does “this problem” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Doctors tend to be beyond reach. B. Caregivers lack a medical background. C. Get the chance to share their ideas. C. Explain how to better manage their health. D. Have conversations with friends and family 3. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A. The way of solving problems. B. The effectiveness of the program. C. The process of helping patients. D. The cause of the program’s success. 4. How does the author support the theme of the text? A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments. C. By explaining statistical data. D. By providing research results. Passage 2 (2025-2026学年山东省日照市高二上学期开学考试英语试题)At any given moment, millions of people suffer from undiagnosed(未确诊) health conditions—diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or even early signs of neurological diseases—that could be detected earlier with better monitoring. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that delayed diagnosis contributes to nearly 20% of preventable health complications(并发症). What if there was a way to continuously track key health markers without invasive blood tests or frequent doctor visits? Researchers have developed a groundbreaking smart contact lens(隐形眼镜) that can analyze tears to monitor health in real time. Inspired by the natural composition of tears, the lens uses ultra-thin sensors to detect changes in these substances. Their waves can indicate dehydration, high blood sugar, or even signs of stress. The new technology is built on a flexible hydrogel(水凝胶) equipped with biological sensors that react to specific biomarkers. When these substances interact with the sensors, the lens sends out light signals that can be captured by a smartphone camera. An accompanying app then translates these signals into easy-to-understand health data, warning the wearer if any levels fall outside the normal range. The hydrogel material is comfortable for extended wear and minimizes wear-related stress, making it suitable for daily use. Additionally, the lens is designed to maintain clear vision while performing its monitoring functions, ensuring no damage to the wearer’s sight. In tests, the lenses successfully detected abnormal sugar levels in diabetic patients within seconds. When the smartphone app processes the light signals, it provides instant feedback, allowing users to take immediate action if necessary. “While further clinical testing is needed before this technology can be widely adopted, our work represents a major step forward in non-invasive health monitoring,” said Dr. Elena Vasquez from Stanford University. “Future versions could integrate additional features, such as drug delivery for conditions like glaucoma, which will be a key focus of our next research phase. We are also exploring partnerships with healthcare providers to make this technology accessible to underserved populations.” 5. What does the author stress in paragraph 1? A. The urgency for early detection of health issues. B. The inefficiency of traditional diagnostic methods. C. The growing burden of deadly diseases worldwide. D. The high cost of monitoring people’s health condition. 6. Why is a hydrogel used in the smart contact lens? A. To change the contact lens’ color. B. To replace the smartphone camera. C. To store real-time health data. D. To ensure comfort and clear vision. 7. What is Dr. Elena Vasquez’s suggestion about? A. The future plans of the research. B. The limitations of future version. C. The challenges of producing the lenses. D. The practical applications of the technology. 8. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Tears Uncover Your Health Secret. B. Contact Lens cure Diseases. C. Smart Lens detect Diseases Early. D. Hydrogel Improves Eyesight. Passage 3 (安徽省芜湖市第一中学2025-2026学年高二暑期返校测试英语试卷)In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have brought both excitement and concerns to various fields. One area where AI is making a profound impact is the medical field, particularly in the domain of diagnostics. AI-powered diagnostic systems leverage deep learning algorithms to analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. These algorithms can detect subtle patterns and anomalies that might be missed by human radiologists, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses. However, the integration of AI in medical diagnostics raises complex ethical questions. For instance, who should be held responsible if an AI system misdiagnoses a patient’s condition? Should AI algorithms be treated as medical professionals, with legal and liability implications? These questions become even more intricate when considering that AI systems learn from vast datasets of medical information, which might contain biases or inaccuracies. Furthermore, the adoption of AI diagnostics could impact the role of healthcare professionals. Some argue that AI could enhance doctors’ capabilities by providing them with additional insights, while others fear that it might replace human expertise, leading to job losses and a potential decrease in the quality of patient care. Despite these challenges, advocates of AI diagnostics emphasize its potential to improve healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved regions where there is a shortage of skilled medical professionals. AI-powered diagnostics could provide preliminary assessments and recommendations, helping to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers. 9. C. AI diagnostics could primarily serve regions with sufficient medical professionals. D. AI diagnostics could replace the need for skilled radiologists. Passage 4 (2024-2025学年山东省泰安市高二下学期7月期末英语试题)A boy couldn’t wear shoes until the age of 13 due to a childhood accident that left his foot seriously injured. He has recently undergone a life-changing surgery. Thanks to the floating medical charity Mercy Ships, Tera is now able to wear shoes for the first time and play football with his friends. From a fishing village in Madagascar, Tera’s family was unable to afford proper medical treatment after he accidentally tipped over a pot of boiling water onto his left leg at the age of one. He suffered third-degree burns, which caused his leg to grow attached to his ankle, making it difficult to walk and impossible to wear shoes. His family had previously sought help from three local traditional healers, each offering their own methods, but none of them proved effective. Later, his mother learned that the international hospital charity Mercy Ships had docked(停靠) its floating hospital, Africa Mercy, in Madagascar. After applying and strict pre-surgical screening, Tera was confirmed fit for surgery. So when volunteers from Mercy Ships informed Tera’s mother about the free surgery available on board, she wrapped Tera’s baby brother on her back and began a two-day journey with her children to reach the ship. Tera was given an appointment on the Africa Mercy and underwent surgery on June 27th,2024, to release the burn contracture(挛缩). He is now able to wear shoes for the first time since he was a baby. “He should have a normally functioning ankle now, which means he will be able to wear regular shoes and play like any other child,” said Dr. Venter, the physician who performed the operation. Before the surgery, Tera was often teased for going barefoot and couldn’t join his friends in football — his favorite sport. “Now I am happy,” he said. “My friends don’t make fun of me anymore. We all play together now.” Since the surgery, not only has Tera been making up for lost games on the pitch, he’s also been able to go fishing with his dad. 13. C. 【答案】5. A 6. D 7. A 8.
