Unit 3
I.阅读理解A
“Anxiety.”The very word invites discom
fort.Its effects-shortness of breath,pounding
heart,muscle tension -are outright upsetting.
But,as a clinician,I find that we tend to miss out
on many valuable opportunities presented by this
human emotion. In and of itself, anxiety is not
deadly,nor is it a disease.Quite the contrary:it is
an indicator of brain and sensory health.Once we
accept that it is a normal, though uncomfortable,
part of life,we can use it to help us.
We all know working out at the gym is hard.
By nature,a“good workout'”is uncomfortable,.
since it involves pushing our physical strength
past what we can easily do.The sweet spot of ex-
ercise is always a somewhat challenging experi-
ence.Similarly,if you want to be emotionally
stronger, you need to face some tension. For ex-
ample, one effective treatment for fear is exposure
therapy(疗法),which involves gradually encoun
tering things that make one anxious, reducing
fear over time.
Humans are social creatures. When my pa-
tients learn to open up to their partners about
their anxieties, they almost always report a grea-
ter sense of emotional closeness. Also,as interna-
tional relationship expert Sue Johnson teaches,
when we express our need for connection during
challenging moments (e.g.,"I'm having a hard
time right now and could really use your sup-
port.")it creates greater connection and turns
our anxiety into love.
From time to time,we find ourselves at the
end of our rope. Our responsibilities pile up,our
resources break down, and we feel uncomfortably
anxious -what we're experiencing is called
stress.Simply put,the demands placed upon us
outweigh our available resources, just like a set of
scales(天平)going out of balance.Focusing on
work and pretending everything is OK only leads
to disastrous results.Medical treatment for stress
may function for a while, but it tends to make
things worse in the long run.The only solution to
deal with stress is to do the mathematics to bal-
ance the scales.

contrary:it is an indicator of brain and sensory
health.Once we accept that it is a normal,
though uncomfortable, part of life,we can use
it to help us.(恰恰相反:它是大脑和感官健康

a 'good workout'is uncomfortable,since it in-

Have you ever felt so tired after staying up
for a night that even coffee doesn't give you the
energy that you need? You may have an energy
drink, but the benefits of drinking one are heavi-
ly outweighed by the risks.
In the past years, more and more studies
have found the deadly effects of energy drinks on
our bodies. The sugar, caffeine and energy sup-
plements(补充物)in energy drinks make up a
deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your
heart function and send you to the hospital!
A study by the University of Bonn,Germa-
ny found that frequent consumption of energy
drinks can greatly change the way our heart func-
tions. The study went on to say that consuming
energy drinks often causes significantly increased
heart contractions in adults, which has the poten-
tial of putting you at risk for irregular heartbeats.
It is possible that many people are uncon-
scious of the alarming side effects of energy
drinks because of the way they are labelled. Most
energy drinks contain between 80 milligrams to
over 350 milligrams of caffeine, sugar and energy
supplements. When an energy drink is marketed
as a diet supplement,it may be distributed with-
out a "nutrition facts"label, which would show
the harmful supplements that are in the drink.
However, even if energy drinks are Food and
Drug Administration (FDA )approved,they
don't have to show the number of supplements.
Energy drinks may be widely available but
they aren't the healthiest or safest choice for your
body.To stay naturally energized,get organized
and stay on top of your work so that you aren't
having to stay up all night to complete assigned
tasks.If you'd like a natural energy boost,you
could make time for a short workout, which will
give you all of the energy you need!

put,the demands placed upon us outweigh our
available resources, just like a set of scales

The only solution to deal
with stress is to do the mathematics to balance

gy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredi-

2.F[上文提到“When you run alone,it is har-
der to get out of the door and onto the pave-
Trainers can assist you in setting a
pace and establishing realistic and achievable
goals, and train you to be the best runner you

I strongly recommend kongzhu as a class-

and challenging way to improve hand-eye coordi-

management. As we navigate the challenges of
our academic lives,it's essential to find outlets

serves the purpose perfectly.Better yet,it's a
window into a rich cultural heritage, providing us
with an opportunity to connect with our roots
