Unit 1 Life Choices
Lesson 3 Your Life Is What You Make It
内乡菊潭高级中学 刘俊
Introduction
I was built to be a mountain
not a creek, rising to the high peaks
with the small valleys,
at my feet.
I was born to be great,
not worthless,
standing on the shoulders
of the giants,
the petty cowards beneath me.

Show time
My first year was almost over and it’s time to say goodbye. Whispering to myself, it has been a tough year, but I has enjoyed working with the children. What made me feel satisfied was that students were able to read, speak and write in English, and learned confidently. Besides teaching, I was glad to see the village’s changes with the joint effort of charity organizations and laborious villagers. Owing to the little contribution I made, I earned their determined trust and heavy love. Gently putting down the pen and slowly closing my diary, I began to pack and phone to a pedicab.
When I was ready to get on the pedicab, the crowd came. Led by the two teachers, villagers and children rushed towards me with shouting, "Mr. Zhang, wait!" They extended the gratitude to me for educating the kids and appreciated efforts I made for village’s development. Children cried in choked voices, "Please stay here longer, and we’ll study harder.” Without words, the two teachers came forward, patted my shoulder, and gave me a big hug. Tears rolling, a year of volunteer teaching life vividly floated in my mind. Although I had only intended to stay for one year, I now change my mind. Delighted that I followed my heart when choosing what to do with my life, and realized self-fulfillment.
