Have you ever heard about World Toilet Day? It falls on November 19th and was set up by the United Nations in 2013 with a purpose to ask people to pay more attention to personal as well as environmental health. However, because of different history and culture, toilets are called differently around the world.
In the US, you will get where you need to go if you ask where the “bathroom” is. If you’re in a public place, such as a shopping mall, you will see people normally ask for directions to the “restroom”. People also use the word “John”. It comes from the name of a British man of the 19th century. He invented the flush toilet, a kind of toilet that people can use water to clean up.

According to UNESCO, there are 740 million people unable to read or write in the world. And 250 million children of primary school age don’t have enough reading and writing skills. However, reading makes everything possible in life: education, work and stay away from poverty (贫困). Considering that, the Global School Community plans to bring digital books (电子书) to all the children of the world and their families.
Digital technology makes a real difference. It can reach across the world and is quite inexpensive. The Global School Community makes books attainable to children all around the world, either through mobile phones, iPads or computers, saving the cost of making books and transport. Technology also helps improve our communication skills. Through the use of technology, teachers and children around the world can meet online to share lessons and discuss ideas. Remote teaching (远程教学) is one example of the success of communication through the Internet.
The child’s first book will have a great influence on that child. The greater the influence, the more likely the child is to continue reading and learning throughout his life. E-books are different from paper books. They can not only provide knowledge and information, but also help people grow healthily in mind. Besides, they can provide hours of entertainment (娱乐) and can connect schools all over the world. Studies have shown that children make much progress after only five months of reading e-books. Bido Hafrag, a child from Egypt, said, “Reading e-books not only helps me learn to read and write, but also gives me much confidence. It helps me have a better understanding of the world as well.”
The Global School Community has a huge e-book library for every school to enter. It aims to bring digital books to all children and their families, and helps schools, colleges and universities to connect with each other. Please join our family of schools, write an e-book or share resources (资源) at global school community. com.
28. What is the Global School Community’s plan?
A. To make every child know the meanings of reading.
B. To bring digital books to all children and their families.
C. To offer chances for teachers to teach all over the world.
D. To build up the confidence of the children from poor areas.
29. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “attainable” in Paragraph 2?

More than 50 years ago, a famous British band called the Beatles split up (解散). They haven’t recorded any songs together since then, but Artificial Intelligence (AI) has helped to create one last Beatles song. This is just one of the ways that AI is changing the world and how we live. As technology improves, the use of AI is spreading.
The invention of AI
In the 20th century, scientists began to wonder if computers could think like us. In 1950, the British expert Alan Turing created the “Turing test” to see whether a computer is intelligent. During this test, a human tester puts questions to a person and a computer at the same time. Both answer the questions, and the tester must decide which answers came from the human. If the tester can’t tell the two apart, the computer is intelligent. Many people believe that writing AI like the ChatGPT has passed this test.
▲
AI is a part of daily life. It can study a lot of information and find out what may happen next. Self-driving cars, for example, use AI to make decisions. In hospitals, AI can study information about thousands of people to work out what might be wrong with a patient from their test results. Tools like ChatGPT can write computer code, stories and even solve maths problems.
The future of AI
Some people worry about how AI might influence their jobs. If computers can create pictures, music and text, could artists, musicians and writers one day be replaced (代替)? Many people also fear that AI could be used to invent and spread lies. Even those who work in AI say there should be rules about how it is used. However, AI can spark (激发) creativity, too. Al is very good at suggesting medicine to treat diseases, and can even invent new medicines. It can help us fight weather change by finding clever ways to reduce our energy use. One day it might even find a way to solve our energy needs completely.
32. In Paragraph 1, how does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By telling stories. B. By asking questions.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing numbers.
33. Why did Alan make the “Turing test”?
A. To wonder if computers could think like humans.
B. To show humans are more intelligent than computers.
C. To get two answers to the questions at the same time.
D. To find out the differences between humans and computers.
34. Which of the following can be put into ▲ ?
A. The use of AI B. The problems of AI
C. The safety of AI D. The predictions of AI
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell the importance of AI. B. To share the advantages of AI.
C. To explain the difficulties of AI. D. To introduce the information of AI.

If you want to write the sentences: I must run or I’ll miss the last bus. You are not fully satisfied with it because the word “run” is not enough to describe how hurried you felt at that time. But where can you find a more suitable (适合的) word?
In a situation like this, you might need a thesaurus. A thesaurus is a kind of dictionary in which words with similar meanings are grouped together. It can help you find the most suitable word to express your ideas. As for the sentence above, “fly” might be a better choice than “run”: I must fly or I’ll miss the last bus. With the help of a thesaurus, you can easily improve your writing.
However, you must be careful when you are using a thesaurus. Very few words are freely interchangeable (可互换的). Take the word “good” as an example. If you look up “good” in a thesaurus, you will get words like “superb” and “acceptable”. However, “a good meal” is different from “a superb meal” or “an acceptable meal”. “A superb meal” is far better than you would have expected. “An acceptable meal” is not bad, but it’s not good enough.
The famous writer Mark Twain once said, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning (闪电) and a lightning bug (萤火虫).” You’d better have an English dictionary on hand while you are using a thesaurus. Carefully study a word before you use it in your writing.
Using all kinds of words to make your point will make your writing more interesting. It will also help you communicate with your readers more clearly. As long as you use it properly, a thesaurus can be a great tool.
36. To show how much you are satisfied with something, which of the following is correct?
A Good>superb>acceptable. B. Superb>acceptable>good.
C. Acceptable>superb>good. D. Superb>good>acceptable.
37. What does the writer want to tell by using Mark Twain’s words?
A. Few words are truly interchangeable.
B. Some words are funnier than other ones.
C. Many English words have several meanings.
D. It takes a lot of time to choose the right words.
38. What does the underlined “It” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Having an English dictionary on hand.
B. Making your writing better day by day.
C. Communicating with your reader face to face.
D. Using all kinds of words to express your ideas.
39. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

When you are telling someone how to get to some places, you should know how to give good directions. In fact, giving directions is harder than just telling someone how to get to a certain place. Let’s learn how to guide others better.
First, tell the person about important landmarks (地标) instead of directing him from beginning to end. It will let the person know if he’s still on the way you advised him to take.
If you can’t describe the route (路线) clearly in words, draw a map. A map allows the person to imagine where he’s going. You can also include details (细节), such as the location of landmarks, on your map. Also, the map can give the person something to hold on to, so he won’t forget your directions.
Although it might be convenient to give someone directions to your favorite shortcut (近路), it could increase the chance of getting lost. Instead, give the simplest directions. When considering the simplest route, choose ones with fewer turns, even if the person takes a bit longer, or pick routes where the person can stay on one road for a long time. Also, don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken before.
Finally, don’t rush when giving directions. Take time to explain important details, such as possible dangers. If you don’t speak slowly or clearly, the person may miss important information. At the same time, don’t use words, expressions, or names that only locals know.
45. Is giving directions as easy as telling someone how to get to a certain place?
_____________________________________________
46. Why is it a good way to tell the person about important landmarks when giving directions?

47. What kind of routes are not suggested?

Spring Festival couplets, also known as “door couplets”, are a symbol of Chinese culture. Putting up Spring Festival couplets is also an important part of Chinese New Year customs.
Spring Festival couplets came from Taofu, an inscription (碑文) on boards made from peach trees in the Zhou Dynasty. People believed that hanging peach boards on the door frames of the houses could drive away bad things. Spring Festival couplets didn’t take shape until the wooden boards were replaced by red paper in the Song Dynasty. Then in the Ming Dynasty, they became a kind of decoration (装饰) and were popular all over the country. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, had a special love for writing Spring Festival couplets. In order to spread (传播) this cultural activity, he ordered all people to put up couplets during the Chinese New Year. Later, the tradition spread to many other countries and still continues today.
However, do you know how to put up couplets? It is not a simple job. There are rules for both the time and the right order. Usually, they should be put up before New Year’s Eve, and the best time is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the 29th of the lunar of December. Each couplet consists of (由……组成) three parts, known as the upper couplet, the lower couplet and the top scroll (横批). The upper couplet is usually on the right side when facing the door and the lower on the left. The couplets also have special meanings, showing people’s wishes for wealth, health and happiness in the new year.

In the US, you will get where you need to go if you ask where the “bathroom” is. If you’re in a public place, such as a shopping mall, you will see people normally ask for directions to the “restroom”. People also use the word “John”.
In the 20th century scientists began to wonder if computers could think like us.

A. To tell the importance of AI. B. To share the advantages of AI.

A. Good>superb>acceptable.

Ⅵ.任务型阅读。(65~67每小题2分,68小题3分,共9分)
阅读下文并回答问题。
_____________________________________________
47. What kind of routes are not suggested?
_____________________________________________
48. If someone asks you for directions impolitely, would you give him directions? Why?
_____________________________________________
【答案】45. No, it isn’t./No.
46. Because it lets the person know if he’s still on the way you advised him to take.
47. Routes with many turns, shortcuts, or routes you haven’t taken before.
48. 开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案为:Yes, because helping others is more important than their manners.
【解析】

【46题详解】
根据第二段“It will let the person know if he’s still on the way you advised him to take.”可知,提及重要地标可以帮助对方确认是否仍在正确路线上。故填Because it lets the person know if he’s still on the way you advised him to take.
【47题详解】
根据第四段“When considering the simplest route, choose ones with fewer turns… Also, don’t suggest routes you haven’t taken before.”可知,应避免推荐转弯多、近路或未亲自走过的路线。故填Routes with many turns, shortcuts, or routes you haven’t taken before.

My friend asked me ________ I ________ go to Beijing for my holiday.
【答案】 ①. if##whether ②. would
【解析】
【详解】句意:我的朋友问我:“你会去北京度假吗?”原句是直接引语,可以改为宾语从句,直接引语是一般疑问句,故用if/whether“是否”引导宾语从句;根据“asked”可知主句是一般过去时,故此处从句用过去将来时would do。故填if/whether;would。
52. 作为学生,我们应该努力把所学和所见联系起来。
As students, we should try to ________ what we learn ________ what we see.
