Have you ever run into this situation: you said something in English, but others misunderstood (误解) you? That’s maybe because you use words or sentences improperly. This is called pragmatic failure (语用失误).
What’s pragmatic failure?
Pragmatic failure refers to (指) difficulties or misunderstandings that happen in communication. If there is pragmatic failure, the listener may feel uncomfortable or not respected.
What causes pragmatic failure?
1. Misunderstanding Politeness
Someone might ask a direct question without considering politeness. This may make others feel uncomfortable. For example, you don’t say “please” when making a request.
2. Talking too much
If you talk too much in a conversation and don’t allow others to express their ideas, the communication may fail.
3. Not noticing body language
You may fail to notice body language, facial expressions, or tone of voice. So you may not understand what the other person says.
4. Not noticing cultural rules
You may have a different cultural background from the other speaker. Maybe what you say is not allowed in his or her culture. For example, you can’t ask about a woman’s age in Western culture.
5. Using too difficult words
If you talk to a kid, but use many difficult words that kids can’t understand, the communication will be a failure.
Example 1
Li Xia was talking with her foreign teacher Ms. Green from America. She asked, “How old are you?”
Example 2
Lisa wanted Tom to help her carry the heavy bag and Lisa said, “Didn’t you see the bag?”
How can we avoid pragmatic failure?
First, you need to understand the context (语境) of the communication to make sure you choose the proper words and expressions. Also, you should be an active listener. Remember to give others chances to speak and pay attention to body language and facial expressions. Third, respect others’ cultural background. Use different words according to who is your listener. By using these ways, you can improve your communication skills and reduce (降低) the risk of pragmatic failure.
34. What is pragmatic failure?
______________________________________________________________________________
35. If pragmatic failure happens, how may the listener feel?
______________________________________________________________________________
36. In Example 1, what mistake did Li Xia make? In Example 2, what should Lisa say?
______________________________________________________________________________
37. What should you do to be an active listener? (One way is OK.)
______________________________________________________________________________
38. Do you have difficulty communicating with others? How will you improve your communication skills?
______________________________________________________________________________
【答案】34. It refers to difficulties or misunderstandings that happen in communication.
35. He/she may feel uncomfortable or not respected.
36. She asked about Ms Green’s age. She should say, “Could you please help me carry the bag?”
37. I should give others chances to speak and pay attention to body language and facial expressions.
38. Yes, I do. I will understand the context of the communication./I will choose the proper words and expressions./I will choose the proper language based on the different situations and purposes of the conversation.

1 Misunderstanding Politeness
35. If pragmatic failure happens how may the listener feel?
______________________________________________________________________________
36. In Example 1, what mistake did Li Xia make? In Example 2, what should Lisa say?
______________________________________________________________________________
37. What should you do to be an active listener? (One way is OK.)

38. Do you have difficulty communicating with others? How will you improve your communication skills?
