For my 11th birthday, I wanted a bicycle. But my parents only gave me 5 dimes (十分硬币). I was sad but not surprised, because we seemed not to have much money.
“Happy birthday!” Dad said. I watched him leave, carrying his briefcase. I played with my neighbour George for a while and then we decided to take a walk. On our walk, we passed a woman selling oranges. I gave her my dimes and bought two oranges for George and me. Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared in front of my eyes. I saw Dad selling oranges. I couldn’t move. How I wished someone would buy an orange from him. But nobody did. I realized how he had earned my birthday dimes and felt guilty for spending them. I pretended not to see Dad and walked past him.
When Dad returned home, he gave Mom a bag of oranges and said, “I bought the oranges from an unemployed (失业的) man.” “Dad, that man is not unemployed. Selling oranges is a job,” I said. It was a difficult time for my dad. I realized how important it was for him to keep his secret.
That night, Dad asked me to walk with him. We walked quietly and tears were rolling down his cheeks. “I won’t tell Mom,” I said. Then Dad didn’t say anything and I didn’t, either.

Recently, an increasing number of young people have turned to a rather unusual method to help with their stress: they are hugging trees. Although it might sound a bit strange or even silly at first glance, there is actually a solid scientific basis behind the act of tree-hugging.
The famous US scientist Edward O. Wilson once said that humans are naturally born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is in their DNA. This deep-rooted connection, often called “biophilia,” helps to explain exactly why people generally prefer peaceful green views over concrete city views. It also perfectly explains why people are so drawn to love and care for cute pets in their daily lives.
Furthermore, there is a specific chemical called cortisol (皮质醇) working inside our body. It acts as an indicator that shows how much stress a person is currently experiencing. The general rule is that the worse a person’s feelings are, the higher his or her cortisol level will be. When the brain senses that a person feels worried, angry, or very sad, it responds by making more cortisol. Hugging trees, however, acts as a natural remedy that helps lower this cortisol level, which in turn makes us feel calmer and better.
Although hugging a tree is highly helpful to us, it is equally important to remember that we shouldn’t harm nature while doing it. Many tiny, delicate creatures and small animals make the tree their home, and they are often too small to be seen by the human eye. So, always remember to hug trees softly—just like how you would gently hug a close friend!
63. What does the sentence “Humans’ love for nature is in their DNA” mean?
A. DNA is very important to humans. B. Humans are born to love nature.
C. Humans love to do studies on DNA. D. Humans like city views better.
64. Which of the following best shows the relationship between bad feelings and the level of cortisol? (x=bad feelings, y=the level of cortisol)
A. B. C. D.
65. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How long we should hug a tree. B. Why hugging trees can reduce stress.
C. What scientists will study in the future. D. How to hug a tree without harming nature.
D
China is making big efforts to help people control their weight and live healthier lives. The government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” plan from 2024 to 2026 to fight against obesity (肥胖症). Obesity can cause serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Here’s what you should know about the new plans: First, it’s important to check your BMI (体重指数). For adults, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. A BMI of 28 or more means you are obese. Also, doctors suggest measuring your waist. Men should keep their waist under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
For exercise, try to do 150—300 minutes of activities like walking, cycling, or dancing every week, and do strength exercises twice a week. If you sit for a long time while studying, stand up and stretch for 3—5 minutes every hour. Otherwise, you will put on more weight.
Schools and communities are also helping. For example, schools in Shanghai now make sure students exercise for at least two hours every day to catch up with the national plan. By 2030, China hopes to slow down the increase of obesity through education and support.
Remember, losing weight isn’t about being perfect—just start with small changes, like drinking water instead of soda or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. With these easy steps, everyone can have a healthier future.
66. What is the main goal of China’s “Weight Management Year” plan?
A. To make traditional Chinese food popular. B. To encourage people to join sports competitions.
C. To reduce obesity and improve public health. D. To change people’s ideas about losing weight.
67. What might happen if a student sits for 4 hours without standing up?
A. They will finish homework faster. B. They might gain weight more easily.
C. They will become healthier. D. They might get relaxed.
68. Why do schools in Shanghai ask students to exercise for two hours daily?
A. To prepare them for sports competitions. B. To reduce homework time.
C. To follow the national plan against obesity. D. To spend more time to enjoy the nature.
69. What does the underlined sentence “losing weight isn’t about being perfect” mean?
A. People should never make mistakes. B. Small changes are enough to start with.
C. Only strict diets can help lose weight. D. Perfect people should be thin and slim.
E
Have you ever noticed that when someone believes in you, you intend to do better? This is called the Pygmalion Effect. It means that if people expect you to succeed, you are more likely to succeed. On the other hand, if people expect you to fail, you might not do as well.
In a famous study, teachers were told that some of their students were “gifted” and would do very well in school. In fact, these students were chosen by chance, and there was no proof (证据) that they were smarter than others. However, by the end of the year, these students did perform better than their classmates. Why? Because the teachers believed in them and gave them more attention and encouragement. The Pygmalion Effect shows that our beliefs can change how we act. If you believe you can do something, you are more likely to try harder and succeed. But if you think you will fail, you might not even try.
How can you use the Pygmalion Effect in your life? Think positively and aim high: Tell yourself that you can do it, even if it’s hard. Spend time with people who encourage you and believe in your abilities. If you aim high, you are more likely to achieve your goals. Remember, what you believe about yourself and what others believe about you can play a big part.
70. What is the Pygmalion Effect according to paragraph 1?
A. It means people should not listen to teachers.
B. It means people should not believe in themselves.
C. It means people will fail if others believe in them.
D. It means people are more likely to succeed if others believe in them.
71. How can you use the Pygmalion Effect in your life?
A. By only listening to positive people. B. By avoiding challenges and staying safe.
C. By believing in yourself and setting high goals. D. By not trying new things without enough preparation.
72. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Secret to Getting Good Grades B. The Power of Beliefs and Expectations
C. How to Build Confidence in Difficult Times D. Why Teachers Matter More Than Students

A. To make traditional Chinese food popular. B. To encourage people to join sports competitions.
