Camilla is very excited. She runs out of the house with the bottle to look for someone who is crying. Soon, she meets a little boy crying hard because he can’t find his cat. Camilla runs to the boy and collects his tears. The tears turn into chocolate at once! Camilla can’t wait to have the chocolate. But when she looks at the poor boy, she thinks she needs to do something. “Hey, don’t worry. Let’s find your cat together.” After some time, they finally find the little cat in the park. “Thank you so much!” says the boy with a big smile. Camilla smiles and feels good too.
Camilla gives some chocolate to the boy. As they eat, she feels so happy. But then she thinks: where does the happiness come from? From the chocolate? Or from making others happy? Soon, Camilla knows the answer: making people happy is much more important than finding chocolate.

Barcodes, a kind of smart code, have changed how we shop. This 77-year-old clever invention makes buying things much faster and easier.
The story began in 1948 when engineers Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver made the first barcode. 26 years later, supermarkets started using it. Before barcodes, supermarket workers needed to type prices (输入价格) by hand. They had to spend much time and often made mistakes.
a barcode
Today, stores around the world scan (扫描) barcodes more than 6 billion times every day!
These black-and-white pictures tell important information about the products (产品), such as how much they are, when they were made, where they come from and so on.
For store workers, barcodes are useful because they can tell what are in stock (有现货). For example, if a store has 100 chocolate bars and sells 20, the workers will know that there are 80 left thanks to barcodes. This saves workers hours of counting and makes sure there are no empty shelves.
But barcodes aren’t just for supermarkets. They help in many places. For example, libraries use them to track (追踪) books and hospitals scan them to give patients the right medicine.
a QR code
Now we have even smarter codes called QR codes. They can store much more information. To see them, you need a mobile phone to scan! The future of QR codes looks even more exciting. Companies are working on “dynamic (动态的) QR codes” that can change their information at any time. Some new QR codes can even work without an Internet connection.
From their beginning in 1948 to today, barcodes show how a simple idea can make life easier. The smart codes save us time every day when we shop and they keep getting better. The next time you hear that “beep”, remember—those little pictures are working hard for you!
35. When did the engineers make the first barcode?
A. In 1926. B. In 1948. C. In 1974. D. In 1977.
36. According to the passage, why are barcodes useful for store workers?
A. Because they make no mistakes.
B. Because they work without stopping.
C. Because they tell what products are in stock.
D. Because they can help to sell more products.
37. What’s the main idea (主旨) of the passage?
A. Barcodes are very easy and cheap to use.
B Smart codes are useful and getting better.
C. Dynamic codes will be more useful and important.
D. QR codes will take the place of (代替) barcodes.
D
Having difficulty getting out of bed for school on Monday mornings? This year’s World Sleep Day on March 21 shows that teenagers (青少年) are not getting enough (足够的) sleep.
Many teenagers feel sleepy during the day because of homework and too much use of phones or computers the night before. For example, in the US, 77.3% of high school students are sleep-deprived, said USA Facts.
Good sleep is important for everyone, but it is even more important for teenagers. They need nine to ten hours of sleep each day—more than adults do. This is because young people grow a lot in their minds and bodies during their teenage years.
For students, sleep helps them do better in school. It makes focus (注意力) better, memory (记忆力) stronger, and helps with thinking skills, according to Harvard Health.
Sleep also helps with creativity (创造力). Scientists in the UK studied this in the late 20th century. They looked at creative test grades between people who didn’t sleep well and those who slept enough. Those who didn’t sleep well did worse on the creative test. They often made the same mistakes and had problems thinking of new ideas.
In 2023, a team of scientists in the US found that our creativity develops (发展) a lot while we are falling asleep. When scientists asked people to dream about one topic (话题) while falling asleep, they did better on creative tasks about that topic after waking up.
To help teenagers get the sleep they need, here are some useful tips:
● Stop using phones or computers at least one hour before bed.
● Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends and holidays.
● Relax before bed by listening to soft music.
In short, getting enough sleep is important for teenagers to be creative and do well in school. By following good sleep habits, they can have a better day and be more creative.
38. According to the passage why do many teenagers feel sleepy during the day?
A. They often eat unhealthy food late at night before sleeping.
B. They watch television for many hours until very late at night.
C They spend too much time playing sports every day after school.
D. They have homework and use phones or computers too much.
39. The underlined (划线的) word “sleep-deprived” in paragraph 2 means _________.
A. having too much sleep B. not having enough sleep
C. having bad dreams D. going to bed early every day
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. A 9~10 hour sleep every day helps teenagers focus better and be creative.
B. Listening to music before bed helps teenagers sleep longer than adults.
C. Not using phones during the day helps teenagers get the sleep they need.
D. Enough sleep helps students be more focused and make no mistakes.
41. What is the best title (标题) of the passage?
A. Sleeping Is the Key to Good Grades
B. Sleeping Makes Teenagers Dream Better
C. The Importance of Sleep for Teenagers
D. The Power of Creativity for Students

Art Class: A Colorful Haven (避风港) in My Junior High
My name is Mia, and I’m a student in Grade 7. Among all the subjects at school, art is my favorite—it’s like a bright corner where I can use brushes and paints to show myself.
We have a great art teacher named Mrs. Evans. She’s a wonderful artist with a shelf full of her own paintings. I love watching her paint. Last week in her class, she taught how to use orange and pink to make a soft sunset. She usually teaches us to take the right colors for our works. When I couldn’t decide between red and pink for my flower, she said, “Try both! Creativity has no rules.” What’s more, she plays light piano music during class to make drawing and painting feel so relaxing.
We often draw or paint in Mrs. Evans’s class. We also look at pictures of great artists, like Monet’s Water Lilies. It’s interesting because those works give me new ideas. Last time, I tried to paint lilies just like Monet, and it turned out well!
We will have an art show in October this year. Our works will be in the school’s art library. Our parents and classmates will come to visit it. I am working on three paintings now—a cat, a park, and a sunset. And I hope I can show one of them in the show.
From Mrs. Evans, I know that art class is more than just a break from heavy studies. Art is a good way to tell something without words. I’m really happy to learn and create in this class every week.

B. Smart codes are useful and getting better.
C. Dynamic codes will be more useful and important.
D. QR codes will take the place of (代替) barcodes.
【答案】35. B 36. C 37. B

38. According to the passage, why do many teenagers feel sleepy during the day?
A. They often eat unhealthy food late at night before sleeping.
B. They watch television for many hours until very late at night.
C. They spend too much time playing sports every day after school.
