Is there anybody who likes doing housework? For some children, doing housework may be the last thing they want to do. For many parents, getting their children to help with housework is also one big headache (令人头痛的事). However, Nurafiza, a mother from Malaysia, planned out a creative way.
Nurafiza came up with a reward system (奖励机制) for her two sons. She made a list of housework for her kids and gave them money for every task they finished. The list included cleaning up the house and putting away the toys, doing the dishes and washing the plates, and even not fighting with each other! Nurafiza also opened a “mini mart” at home where her kids could go shopping. Her three-year-old and six-year-old sons could buy snacks like biscuits (饼干) at her “mini mart” from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The money she gave to her kids was fake (假的) money. She had bought it online.
Because of this system, both of her children are almost always glad to help with housework. Her Facebook post has got over 15,000 likes and has been shared over 27,000 times. Many parents have begun to imitate (模仿) her.
In fact, doing housework plays a very important part in children’s development. First, housework teaches children basic skills for living, like cleaning up rubbish and cooking. Second, doing housework is a good way to exercise children’s bodies. Third, doing housework makes it possible for parents to share more happy moments with their kids.
23. Why did Nurafiza come up with the reward system?
A. Because she wanted her sons to help with housework.
B. Because she wanted to open a real mini mart at home.
C. Because she wanted to sell snacks to other kids.
24. What can we learn about the money Nurafiza gave to her kids?
A. It was real money bought online.
B. It could be used to buy snacks at the mini mart.
C. It was given to them once a month.
25. How did other parents react (反应) to Nurafiza’s idea?
A. They laughed at her idea.
B. They asked her for money.
C. Many of them followed her example.
26. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The fun of housework.
B. The importance of housework.
C. The ways to do housework.

The Yangtze finless porpoise (江豚) is a special animal living only in China’s Yangtze River. People call it the “smiling angel” because of the shape of its mouth — it appears to be smiling all the time. This creature plays an important role in the river’s ecosystem.
Sadly, the number of finless porpoises was once dropping very quickly. In fact, there were only about 1,000 in 2012. Scientists were worried because another animal, the baiji dolphin (白鱀豚), used to live in the same river. But in 2006, scientists found that the baiji dolphin had disappeared. For this reason, the government decided to take action to protect the finless porpoise.
First, the government stopped fishing in the Yangtze River for ten years. They also made new environmental laws. These steps helped a lot. By 2022, the number of finless porpoises had grown to about 1,249.
Scientists also moved some Yangtze finless porpoises to Tian’e Zhou Lake. At first, there were only five in the lake. Now there are more than 100. Besides, scientists set up a special place in Wuhan to take care of them. Here, baby Yangtze finless porpoises are born and grow up safely.
Actually, the finless porpoise is not just a cute animal. Its living places and health can tell us how clean the river is. So protecting the porpoise also means protecting the Yangtze River.
Successfully protecting the finless porpoise is a good example of how people can help save endangered (濒危的) animals. Imagine a world without this smiling animal — that would be truly sad. But with care and effort, we can keep these lively creatures swimming happily in the river for many years to come.
27. Why do people call the finless porpoise the “smiling angel”?
A. Because it often smiles at people.
B. Because the shape of its mouth looks like a smile.
C. Because it brings people good luck.
28. What happened to the baiji dolphin in 2006?
A. It moved to Tian’e Zhou Lake.
B. Its number grew to about 1,249.
C. Scientists found it had disappeared.
29. What does the underlined word “dropping” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. 下降 B. 增长 C. 稳定
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Yangtze River: Home to Many Animals
B. The Disappearance of the Baiji Dolphin
C. Saving the Smiling Angel of the Yangtze

◇ 33
When you chat with your friends, share something positive. Talk about a holiday plan, a fun trip or an interesting story. Discussing happy things makes gossip less interesting and keeps conversations friendly.
◇ Change the topic
34 Ask about hobbies, movies or news. For example, “Have you seen the new movie?” Another more direct (直接的) way is to say, “This conversation is starting to feel like gossip to me, so let’s talk about something else.”
◇Stay away from conversation with gossip
“You know, I'd love to chat, but ...” might be the easiest way to deal with those who gossip. 35
By using these tips, you can avoid gossip and build better friendships!
A. If your friends start gossiping, turn to a safe subject.
B. In this way, you can leave them without an ear to hear the things that may make you unhappy.
C. For example, you can say, “I don’t feel good about discussing others’ private lives.”

Lily’s parents gave her a list of chores to do at home. On her bedroom wall, they put up a board with ten pictures of different chores. Every day, Lily had to pick two pictures and put them in a box to show which chores she would do. Lily was not happy about it. “I’m not doing anything,” she said.
She told her teacher, Ms. Martin, about it. Ms. Martin listened and smiled. “Your parents do many chores too,” she said. “After a long day at work, they cook and clean so that you can live in a nice home. If everyone helps out, home will be a happier place.”
Lily thought about Ms. Martin’s words. After she got home, she watched her parents carefully. She saw her mum cooking dinner while her dad was cleaning up. They looked tired but still smiled at her. That night, Lily took a deep breath and decided to try.
The next day, she chose some chores: picking up her toys, cleaning the table and feeding the cat. At first, it was not fun, but soon she found the work was not as hard as she had thought. She also noticed that the rooms looked tidier and that her parents seemed happier.
A few days later, Lily found she could do more than three chores easily. Helping at home became something she did with joy, and she even asked her parents to add new chores to the board.
