Two friends, Jason and Harry, lived happily on neighbouring farms. They worked together and helped each other for many years. But one day, the two friends had a big fight. Every time they met each other, they just walked away without any words.
One morning, there was a knock on Jason’s door. When he opened the door, Jason saw an old carpenter (木匠). He asked Jason if there was anything in need of fixing on his farm. Jason thought for a few minutes and asked the carpenter to build a high fence (篱笆) around the farm. “I never want to see Harry’s face again!” said Jason.
The old carpenter then learnt about what happened to the two friends. He thought quietly for a while and said, “I see.” Then Jason went to the city to buy things. When he came back in the evening, he was surprised. He didn’t see any fences, but a bridge over the small river between his farm and Harry’s!
Just then, Harry got out of his house and saw the bridge. He ran across the bridge and hugged (拥抱) Jason. They both said sorry to each other. The carpenter collected his tools and was ready to leave. “Please stay for a few more days. We have more things that need fixing,” said the friends. “I’d love to, sirs,” the carpenter smiled. “But I have many more bridges to build and things to fix in other places.”

Do you argue with your parents about making your bed or cleaning your room? Are your parents angry because you use the Internet or play with your friends outside all the time? If your answers are yes, then our new Family app can help you a lot.
With the Family app, teenagers and parents look at family arguments from both sides and solve their problems together. The app gives you advice and helps you get on well with your parents. It also helps your parents to understand you better.
How does it work? You read different kinds of problems and then choose an answer from different options (选项). The app tells you why the answer is the best and why the other options aren’t so good. For example, you’re preparing to go out with your friends, but your parents want you to visit your grandparents. Do you say “We always go there on the weekend. I’m going to play with my friends outside today.”? Or do you say “OK! We can go there today, but I’d like to play with my friends outside tomorrow.”? It’s common that parents and children disagree with each other. That’s what we call conflicts (冲突). Some of the conflicts are small and easy to end. Others may need parents to take action and help. To someone’s surprise, by solving them together, family conflicts can help children learn important life skills.
Some simple childhood games show how conflict and repair work. For example, in peek-a-boo, a baby might feel a little unhappy and worried when he can’t see his parent. But when the parent returns, everything is OK. As children grow older, they play games like hide and seek or tag. There are small moments of upset followed by great fun and joy. These games help children prepare for all kinds of problems in the future.
As children grow up, they develop their life skills by working through conflicts. When a conflict is too serious for a child, parents may step in. To set a good example, parents could try to remain cool first—don’t be too excited or angry. Next, they can say some kind and nice things to make children feel better. Now here comes the chance for parents and children to sit down. Then they can have a face-to-face communication. This helps them rebuild the love and trust for each other. In this way, children learn that sometimes things go wrong. But if they deal with them properly, they can always rebuild healthy and strong relationships with others.
A healthy process of going through conflict and repair with their parents promises children’s happiness and social success in the future.

A.By telling stories. B.By showing facts. C.By listing numbers. D.By giving examples.

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them.
The second kind of friend could also be called “guest friends”. They are not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. They will correct you when you’ re wrong, and though they may not be perfect, they at least will always care about you, and can not do anything bad to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

Do you find that your dinners with your parents are less happy than before? Do you find it easier to chat with them in the past? Do you and your parents often disagree on things? You’re not alone. Many kids and their parents have such experiences.
When you’re growing up, your body changes a lot. You might worry about getting taller or heavier than your friends, or about your voice changing or getting spots on your face. When you feel worried, you might get angry at your parents sometimes.
It’s also hard to balance (平衡) your feelings as you grow up. You get into a strange time called middle ground—no longer a small child but not quite an adult (成人). You want to do things by yourself more, but you still need your parents’ love and help. You want to make decisions by yourself, but your parents might not always agree. This can make you feel sad.
But don’t worry too much about arguments with your parents. Many kids have them too. The most important thing is to talk to your parents. Tell them how you feel, even if it's hard. They might not agree with you right away, but if you keep talking and listening to each other, you can find a way to make things better.
Remember, your parents love you and want to help you. Sometimes they forget how hard it is to grow up. But if you keep talking and trying to understand each other, you can work things out. So keep trying, and you’ll find that you and your parents can get along well.
1.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing some facts. D.By giving numbers.

Green-Eyed Monster
It is all too human to feel a little envious of others’ success, but what can we do when those feelings threaten to overcome (困扰) us? One reader this month describes anger about a friend getting a better job: “I just can’t help feeling upset about what they’ve achieved.”
The obvious solution to envy would be to avoid comparing ourselves to the people around us, but that is easier said than done. Humans are social by nature, and our position within a group has serious influence on our well-being. As a result, we naturally use others as a measure (衡量) of our own success—a habit that can quickly kill any satisfaction we might feel from our own achievements.
We can see this in how people think about their earnings (收入). Research by Christopher Boyce at the University of Stirling, UK, and his colleagues has shown that how much people earn compared to others in their social group matters more for their happiness than the exact amount they earn. Social comparison can also affect how we see things like education or intelligence: it’s how we match up to others that shapes how good we feel about ourselves, rather than how well we do on our own.
Besides, a “focusing illusion”, which means our habit of focusing on just one aspect of someone’s life, may worsen envy. We imagine that our successful friend is always joyful, and forget that they have to face everyday difficulties like fighting with their family members or losing a pet.
In one study, Ed O’Brien at the University of Chicago and his colleagues asked participants to imagine a peer with a great life. Simply reminding them of the “small problems” this person regularly faced significantly reduced the participants’ envy. We can never know what hidden struggles someone may have, and-realizing this should make us think twice about wishing ourselves in another’s shoes. It should also encourage us to treat them with more kindness.
When we are feeling upset, we might also see another’s success as evidence (依据) that our own goals are achievable. To put yourself in this mindset, try remembering all the things within your control to improve your situation, and make a step-by-step plan of how you might achieve that.
What’s more, why not involve the successful people themselves, and ask them about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them? Learning about those difficulties will probably reduce your unpleasant feelings and increase your drive to take positive action.
We may never run away from social comparison. When life gives us sour grapes, however, we can choose to make wine from those momentarily bitter fruits.
1.Why does the writer talk about “small problems” in Paragraph 5?
A.To explain how envy is reduced by achieving similar success.
B.To suggest that envy appears when people hide their difficulties.
C.To show how envy can be reduced by understanding others’ struggles.
D.To tell us that envy is a result of caring about others’ troubles too much.
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It is easy to stop comparing ourselves to others and avoid envy.
B.It is common to measure our happiness by comparing with others.
C.It is useful to focus on just one aspect of others’ life to reduce envy.
D.It is hard to realize our goals are achievable when we see others’ success.
3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A.We should accept envy as an unavoidable part of life.
B.Social comparison will do harm to our personal growth.
C.We should compare less to deal with our negative emotions.
D.Envy can be turned into a positive force for self-improvement.
根据“Simply reminding them of the ‘small problems’ this person regularly faced significantly reduced the participants’ envy.”可知,仅仅提醒他们这个人经常面对的“小问题”就显著减少了参与者的嫉妒。由此可知,理解他人的困境能缓解嫉妒情绪。故选C。

3.词句猜测题。划线句“When life gives us sour grapes, however, we can choose to make wine from those momentarily bitter fruits.”可知,当生活给我们酸葡萄时,我们可以选择用这些暂时的苦涩果实酿酒。这是是隐喻,结合前文“use others’ success as evidence that our own goals are achievable”可知,将他人成功视为自己目标可实现的依据。由此推知,嫉妒可转化为自我提升的动力。故选D。
Vanessa and Niki had just begun a friendship. Niki was new to the school, and Vanessa had thought she was a snob (势利的人). That was mostly because Niki said little, and besides, that was the rumor (谣言) about her. But then, Niki left her notebook on the playground by accident, and Vanessa picked it up and returned it to her. Then the two girls started to talk, and they got to know each other. Now Vanessa knew that Niki wasn’t a snob, but she still didn’t understand why Niki wouldn’t talk to anyone.
One day, Niki explained herself, “I don’t really know anyone here except you, and I’m kind of shy. I know everybody thinks I’m a snob, but I’m not. I just don’t know what to say to people.”
Vanessa had an idea for helping Niki. “If my other friends get to know you,” she told Niki, “they’ll like you, too. So why don’t you sit with my friends and me at lunch tomorrow? Then everybody will see what you’re like.” Niki was very uncertain, but she was tired of everyone thinking she was a snob. So she agreed to have lunch with Vanessa and her friends.
The next day, Vanessa and Niki waited in the dining hall for Vanessa’s other friends. Niki was nervous, but Vanessa said, “Don’t worry. Just be yourself. You’ll be fine.” At last, everyone else arrived.
One of Vanessa’s friends took one look at Niki and asked, “Why are you sitting with the snob, Vanessa? Come on and eat with us.” Niki’s eyes filled with tears.
Vanessa took a breath and then said, “I’m sitting with Niki because she’s my friend and she’s nice. Don’t judge (判断) people before you know them. How about finding out for yourself instead of believing every rumor you hear?” For a moment, everyone looked at each other. Then, very slowly, the other girls sat down at the table. At first, nobody said much, but soon, they started talking. By the time lunch was over, Niki realized that Vanessa was right—all she had to do was to be herself. And what everyone else needed to do was to stop believing rumors.
1.Why did people think Niki was a snob at first?

C.Because she spread rumors about others.
D.Because she seldom spoke and others believed the rumor.

Free time is a great chance for teenagers to have fun. But what about free time when parents are around? Some teenagers want to play freely without parents watching over them, while parents and experts might think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, believes teenagers should be able to play freely. “Last time I played with my parents nearby, I had a knot in my stomach and was unable to have a really good time,” Lin says. “My friend Chen Xiaoxin has the same kind of experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates, and everyone felt uncomfortable because his mother was watching.”
Wang Min, Lin Tao’s mother, thinks playtime needs parents’ supervision (监督). She says, “People often say I like to restrain my child, but that’s not true. I’m just worried he might get into trouble. Some kids might have a bad effect on him, and some games like LARP (剧本杀) might lead him the wrong way. He could even lose himself into the stories and have a hard time getting back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a social studies doctor, says it’s easy to understand that teenagers want freedom. Playing freely helps them learn to be independent (独立的). Parents can give them more space. They don’t have to watch them all the time. But teenagers should know all the details (细节) about the activities before they go to play. Then they can talk with their parents and decide together if they can go out to play by themselves.
In my view, both teenagers’ freedom and parents’ supervision are important. They need free time, and they also need parents’ proper (恰当的) supervision.

Have you heard of (听说) dazi? Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with Chinese young people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we haven’t known him or her before.

An about 2-metre-wide alley (小巷,胡同), or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts (吸引) a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui. There is an ancient story behind it.
During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarrelled with their neighbour Wu and his family over the boundary (分界线) between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved. Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could get the Wu family to give in.
However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, thousands of li away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one metre or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Oinshihuang.”
His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbour was more important. So they decided to move their wall back about one metre. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another metre while building their wall. It made an about two-metre-wide narrow “alley” come into being between the houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley deeply reflects the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谐) that are widely admired in China.

A.Only the Wu family moved their wall back about one metre.
B.Only the Zhang family moved their wall back about one metre.
C.Both the Zhang family and the Wu family moved their walls back about one metre.
D.Neither the Zhang family nor the Wu family moved their walls back about one metre.

Practice speaking to yourself in front of a mirror for a period of time. Speak aloud and act as if you are speaking to another person.

D.Xie Hao told his parents where to go and whom to play with before playtime.

A.Teenagers need free time to be independent.
B.Parents should keep an eye on their children all the time.
C.Teenagers can’t play LARP without parents’ supervision.
D.Teenagers need both freedom and parents’ proper supervision.
Have you heard of (听说) dazi? Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with Chinese young people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we haven’t known him or her before.
The dazi culture is about finding the right person to do the right activity with. Xiaoyue, a young woman from Ningxia, has met many dazi because of her love for basketball and biking. Having a dazi not only gives her company (陪伴) but also helps her enjoy sports more.
These dazi relationships are very different from close friendships. As for close friends, we need to stay in close contact. With a dazi, you don’t have to do so. Many dazi may not meet again after a trip or a game together. So, many people believe having a dazi makes their social life easier and more comfortable.
Finding a dazi shows that Chinese young people want clearer boundaries (界限) in their social relationships. Dazi will not talk or ask a lot about their personal lives. And they hope these relationships can let them share their hobbies and interests, or that they can help them to improve themselves.
Although finding a dazi has many good points, we should be careful and put our safety first.
