On April 16, 2022, at an indoor sports venue in Daegu, South Korea, Kim Kyu Tae managed to break the world record for the longest paper plane flight with each one of his eight throws. The previous record of 69.14 metres set by Joe Ayoob and John M. Collins had been standing for a decade, but Kim managed to break it on all of his eight measured attempts (71.813 metres being the shortest and 77.134 metres being the farthest). But Kim was just one part of a team who worked hard on designing and building this simple-looking but remarkable paper plane.
Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. That’s where his partners, Chee Yie Jian, who designed the plane, and fellow South Korean, Shin Moo Joon, who was tasked with folding the paper, come in. Together, they became an unstoppable force. Interestingly, Chee, who comes from Malaysia, wasn’t present in Daegu for the record-breaking event, and he has never even met his two teammates in person before. The paper plane building community is apparently global, and they were able to lay out their plans online.
While paper planes are considered mere toys by a lot of people, to those who build and fly them competitively, they are complex creations that vary greatly in terms of paper used, geometry and weight. It all depends on the end goal of the designer. For their particular paper plane, the team decided to use CX22 100GSM, which is one of the highest quality 100GSM papers in the world, according to Shin Moo Joon. It was the same type of paper used by Ayoob and Collins for their world record attempt in 2012.
Now that they’ve broken the world record, the three paper plane enthusiasts have their sights set on bigger things. They are confident that their creations can fly over 80 metres, provided they can find a more spacious indoor venue, and they are also considering tackling the record for “longest flying paper aircraft (duration)”, set by Takuo Toda of Japan (29.2 seconds).
4.Which has the least impact on paper plane’s performance?
A.The player’s arm strength. B.The paper plane’s form.
C.The designer’s competence. D.The quality of the paper.
5.What do we know about Chee Yie Jian?
A.He and Shin Moo Joon are from the same country.
B.He had never met his teammates before the game.
C.He didn’t witness his partner setting the record.
D.He is better at the art of folding paper planes.
6.Which best describes the process of making paper planes for competitions?
A.Pleasing. B.Demanding. C.Competitive. D.Comparative.
7.What contributed to their successfully breaking the record?
A.Working as a team. B.Finding an ideal venue.
C.Using high-quality paper. D.Setting clear goals.
【答案】4.A 5.C 6.B 7.A
根据第二段中“Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. (Kim Kyu Tae是世界上最好的纸飞机投掷者之一,但如果飞机的设计和制作质量不佳,即使他拥有火箭般强劲的手臂,也很难打破世界纪录。)”可知,纸飞机的性能主要取决于飞机的设计、制作质量以及纸张的质量,而投掷者的手臂力量虽然重要,但相比之下影响较小。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Interestingly, Chee, who comes from Malaysia, wasn’t present in Daegu for the record-breaking event, and he has never even met his two teammates in person before. (有趣的是,来自马来西亚的Chee并没有出席在大邱举行的破纪录活动,而且他以前从未见过他的两位队友。)”可知,Chee Yie Jian并没有亲眼见证他的搭档创造纪录。故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段中“While paper planes are considered mere toys by a lot of people, to those who build and fly them competitively, they are complex creations that vary greatly in terms of paper used, geometry and weight. (虽然很多人认为纸飞机只是玩具,但对于那些有竞争力地制作和飞行纸飞机的人来说,它们是复杂的创造物,在纸张使用、几何形状和重量方面都有很大的不同。)”可推知,制作用于比赛的纸飞机是一个要求很高的过程。故选B项。
7.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. That’s where his partners, Chee Yie Jian, who designed the plane, and fellow South Korean, Shin Moo Joon, who was tasked with folding the paper, come in. Together, they became an unstoppable force. (Kim Kyu Tae是世界上最好的纸飞机投掷者之一,但如果飞机的设计和制作质量不佳,即使他拥有火箭般强劲的手臂,也很难打破世界纪录。这时,他的合作伙伴就派上用场了,设计飞机的Chee Yie Jian和负责折纸的韩国同胞Shin Moo Joon。他们一起成为了一股不可阻挡的力量。)”可知,他们成功打破纪录的关键在于团队合作。故选A项。

Some people remember beginning high school sports classes by reaching for their toes. Then, over the years, we were told it was better to stretch after exercise. It turns out that both those things can be true, but different advice has made some people mixed-up.
David Behm, from Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, spoke to Associated Press to give his advice on safe stretching.
“It’s almost always good to stretch, but it’s better if you warm up first,” said Behm. He recommends activities such as jogging, walking or cycling for 5 or 10 minutes. Follow that with some static (静态的) stretching, the traditional way of reaching and holding a position. You can then do activity-specific dynamic stretching, in which you warm up the muscles with repetitive exercises like leg lifts.
Should you always stretch before exercising? If it’s traditional stretching, not necessarily. “Weight training, for example, can be a good form of stretching, if you start with weights that aren’t too heavy,” Behm said. “You probably don’t have to do extra stretching unless you’re a gymnast, a figure skater, or even a golfer.” You don’t need to stretch first if you’re going for an easy run, either. Just start with a slow jog to warm up.
After exercise, “Light stretching is OK, as long as you don’t reach a point where you’re feeling pain,” Behm said. If you’re playing a sport, static stretching before you start helps prevent muscle injury. And make sure to do the same amount of stretching on both sides of your body: Lacking flexibility on one side can lead to injury, he added.
Different studies over the years have either encouraged or discouraged stretching before exercise. Behm said that this is partly because some studies were designed with top-level athletes in mind, not regular people. “If you’re Usain Bolt, it makes a difference,” said Behm. Not so much for the rest of us.
8.What does David Behm recommend doing before static stretching?
A.Reaching for the toes repeatedly. B.Starting with heavy weight training.
C.Warming up with activities like jogging. D.Doing activity-specific dynamic stretching.
9.Which group might need extra stretching before exercising according to Behm?
A.Office workers. B.Regular joggers.
C.High school students in general. D.Gymnasts, figure skaters, or golfers.
10.What does David Behm think of stretching before an easy run?
A.It’s absolutely necessary. B.It’s enough to have a jog.
C.It should be done by professionals. D.It’s dangerous and should be avoided.
11.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To offer advice on safe stretching. B.To advocate stretching before exercising. C.To discuss the benefits of weight training. D.To compare different stretching techniques.
【答案】8.C 9.D 10.B 11.A

根据第三段“He recommends activities such as jogging, walking or cycling for 5 or 10 minutes.Follow that with some static ( 静态的 ) stretching, the traditional way of reaching and holding a position.(他建议进行诸如慢跑、散步或骑自行车等运动,每次持续5到10分钟。然后做一些静态拉伸,这是传统的到达和保持姿势的方式)”可知,大卫·贝姆建议在进行静态拉伸之前先通过慢跑等运动来热身。故选C。
9.细节理解题。根据第四段“You probably don’t have to do extra stretching unless you’re a gymnast, a figure skater, or even a golfer.(除非你是体操运动员、花样滑冰运动员,甚至是高尔夫球手,否则你可能不需要额外进行拉伸运动)”可知,瑜伽运动员、花样滑冰运动员或高尔夫球运动员在锻炼前可能需要进行额外的拉伸运动。故选D。
根据第四段中的“You don’t need to stretch first if you’re going for an easy run, either. Just start with a slow jog to warm up.(如果你只是进行轻松的跑步,那么事先也不需要做拉伸运动。
故选A。

The Netherlands is the only country in the world with more bicycles than residents. By 2022,the Netherlands had had a total of about 23 million bicycles, with an ownership rate of 1.4 bikes per person. One study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that in the Netherlands cycling prevents about 6,500 deaths each year, and that the Dutch have half-a-year-longer life expectancy (预期寿命) due to cycling.
“The time spent cycling was about 74 minutes per week for Dutch adults aged 20 to 90 years old. The time was fairly stable over adulthood and reached its apex around 65 to 70 years old, in the early days of retirement. The death rate reduction, which was a direct result of the average time spent cycling for a certain age group, was therefore also the highest among the seniors who just retired,” said Jeremy Smith, an expert from NIH.
What is it that makes cycling so beneficial? Obviously, cycling is a form of exercise. It is a great form of cardio exercise (健心体操), which gets your heart pumping and helps strengthen the heart muscles. Doing cardio exercise may also help lower your blood pressure.
Furthermore, solid evidence proves the link between cycling and better thinking skills. Even younger adults claim that a bike ride helps shift their thinking to a higher level — and research backs them up. In one small study, young men were required to cycle for 30 minutes every day for 3 weeks. They also completed a series of cognitive (认知的) tests before and afterward. After cycling, they scored higher on memory, reasoning and planning, and they were able to finish the tests more rapidly than before.
Besides all the benefits mentioned above, cycling, as many of the Dutch put it, is a way of life. In their simplest form, bikes are tools for travelling. But they’re so much more. They represent cognitive improvement, environmental protection, satisfaction and an expression of freedom. They bring people of the same passion together and connect them to a greater journey of life.
12.Why does the author list figures in paragraph 1?
A.To compare the number of residents and bikes.
B.To illustrate the link between health and cycling.
C.To indicate the demand for green transportation.
D.To emphasize the accuracy of the study by NIH.
13.What does the underlined word “apex” in paragraph 2?
A.Target. B.Peak.
C.Destination. D.Potential.
14.What do we know about the study in paragraph 4?
A.It justifies the mental benefits of cycling.
B.It stresses practical skills about cycling.
C.It demonstrates the critical thinking of young men.
D.It compares levels among different age groups.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Netherlands: The Bicycle Capital of the World.
B.The Netherlands: A Country with Better Living Conditions.
C.Cycling: An Activity Bringing People Together.
D.Cycling: An Activity Improving Your Health and More.
【答案】12.B 13.B 14.A 15.D
根据第一段中“By 2022,the Netherlands had had a total of about 23 million bicycles, with an ownership rate of 1.4 bikes per person. One study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that in the Netherlands cycling prevents about 6,500 deaths each year, and that the Dutch have half-a-year-longer life expectancy due to cycling.(到2022年,荷兰共有约2300万辆自行车,人均拥有率为1.4辆。美国国立卫生研究院(NIH)发表的一项研究报告称,在荷兰,骑自行车每年可以防止约6500人死亡,而且由于骑自行车,荷兰人的预期寿命延长了半年)”可知,这些数字体现了骑行在预防早逝和延长预期寿命方面的积极影响,表明骑行对于健康有重要意义。由此推知,作者列举数字是为了说明健康和骑行之间的联系。故选B项。
13.词句猜测题。根据第二段中划线词上文“The time was fairly stable over adulthood (成年期的时间相当稳定)”和下文“around 65 to 70 years old, in the early days of retirement. The death rate reduction, which was a direct result of the average time spent cycling for a certain age group, was therefore also the highest among the seniors who just retired, (……在退休初期,大约65至70岁。因此,死亡率的降低是某一年龄段平均骑自行车时间的直接结果,在刚刚退休的老年人中也是最高的)”可知,此处描述荷兰不同年龄的人骑行的时间,退休初期骑行时间的情况让死亡率降幅最大。由此推知,这一年龄段的人骑行时间最长,即达到峰值,划线词apex与peak“顶点,最高点”意思接近。故选B项。
14.推理判断题。根据第四段中“In one small study, young men were required to cycle for 30 minutes every day for 3 weeks. They also completed a series of cognitive tests before and afterward. After cycling, they scored higher on memory, reasoning and planning, and they were able to finish the tests more rapidly than before.(在一项小型研究中,年轻男性被要求连续三周每天骑30分钟自行车。他们还在测试前后完成了一系列认知测试。骑自行车后,他们在记忆力、推理和计划方面得分更高,而且他们能够比以前更快地完成测试)”可知,测试结果显示骑行改善了认知能力,提升了记忆力、推理能力和计划能力。由此可知,该研究证明了骑行对思维能力的益处。故选A项。
通读全文,特别是根据第三段“What is it that makes cycling so beneficial? Obviously, cycling is a form of exercise. It is a great form of cardio exercise, which gets your heart pumping and helps strengthen the heart muscles. Doing cardio exercise may also help lower your blood pressure.(是什么让骑自行车如此有益?显然,骑自行车是一种锻炼形式。它是一种很好的健心体操,能让你的心脏跳动,有助于增强心脏肌肉。做有氧运动也可能有助于降低血压)以及第四段“Furthermore, solid evidence proves the link between cycling and better thinking skills.(此外,确凿的证据证明了骑自行车与更好的思维能力之间的联系)”和第五段“Besides all the benefits mentioned above, cycling, as many of the Dutch put it, is a way of life.(除了上述所有好处外,正如许多荷兰人所说,骑自行车是一种生活方式)”可知,文章主要介绍了骑行对健康的益处以及骑行在荷兰人生活中的意义,故D项“骑行:一项改善你的健康及其他方面的活动”适合作为本文标题。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项
Conversational running refers to maintaining a pace at which you can comfortably speak in complete sentences as you move. It usually involves exercising at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate.
According to Kristen Hislop, a certified coach, you rarely choose and achieve this pace because it doesn’t feel like a “hard” workout. 16 But even though it doesn’t feel especially challenging, low-intensity training is great for your overall health.
Doing low-intensity exercise on a regular basis is going to build up endurance (忍耐力) so you’ll be able to go longer and further. 17 And, compared to high-intensity exercise, which uses sugar as fuel, low-intensity exercise burns fat more effectively. Beyond physical benefits, conversational running can improve mental clarity and reduce stress by increasing blood flow to the brain.
18 While running, you are near somebody but not necessarily facing them, so there might be a little bit more willingness to open up. This is also a phenomenal way to break interpersonal anxiety barriers. One reason may be that running stimulates endorphins, the body’s natural feel — good chemicals. 19 A stronger bond with those you run alongside may thus be formed.
Joining a running club can strengthen these positive effects. Finding the right club that matches your pace is crucial. You know the club is the right “fit” after the first outing and talk about meeting up for runs later. You meet people you have dinner and go on vacation with. 20 It’s beautiful to be a part of the running group.
A.You are likely to become lifelong friends.
B.It’s often much slower than you’d anticipate.
C.However, its effect may not be felt immediately.
D.Everything around you starts to seem more positive.
E.You also recover faster and reduce the risk of injuries.
F.High-intensity running is thought to provide more benefits.
G.Conversational running holds significant social advantages.

When I was young, my parents often took me to the swimming pool near our home and taught me how to swim. At first, I was afraid of water and didn’t dare to jump into the water. But later, I overcame my fear of water and fell in love with swimming. While swimming, I’m just like a lively and free fish. I really enjoy that great feeling.
“Participants, please gather behind the red flag,” a man’s voice came from the loud speaker.
Hannah tightened her helmet (头盔) and felt very excited since she was determined to win a blue mountain bike, the reward for the champion in the Five-mile Junior Fat-tire Race.
“On such a bike, I’d fly in more important races in the future,” she thought.
“Good luck, junior mountain bikers,” the man’s voice came again. “Three, two, one, and go!”
Standing in front of the flag was a teacher who would lead the way. When the teacher rode down the dirt road, all the racers followed closely. Riding beside Hannah was her classmate Ruth, who was known for her dangerous competing behavior.
About ten minutes later, Ruth made an unexpected sharp turn and cut into Hannah’s track. Hannah was forced to slow down and ride behind her.
When they came to a slope (坡), Hannah slowed down, but Ruth was still gaining speed and disappeared behind a thick forest. Looking back over her shoulders, Hannah saw nobody in sight. Hannah biked through the forest. She still could not see her only competitor.
“Oh, Ruth wins,” she thought, without slowing down. “The blue mountain bike is hers, not mine!”
Hannah crossed a wooden bridge and then saw the girl at the edge of the forest. The teacher was helping her to sit down beside her bike.
“What happened?” Hannah wondered. “Perhaps, this is the best chance for me to win the race.”
Hannah dried the sweat on her forehead and pushed on. But the teacher noticed her and jumped on his bike to lead the way again. When he caught up, Hannah asked what was the matter with Ruth.
“She fell off her bike and hurt one of her legs. I hope I could stay with her now,” the teacher said. “But, don’t worry too much. I have called the medical team and they are on the way.”
On hearing this, Hannah came to a sudden stop and turned around her bike.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“What are you doing, Hannah?” the teacher asked in surprise. Hannah did not reply and rushed toward the place where Ruth was left. When she approached Ruth, she could see fear and pain in her eyes. Hannah got off her bike and sat down beside Ruth who asked why her victim came to her rescue. “Maybe, it is a good chance to win this race. But I don’t want my enemy to become food for the animals in the forest,” Hannah joked. “I want to defeat her later.”
Ruth’s face became very red. She apologized for her dangerous behavior on the way and urged Hannah to continue her race. But Hannah refused to give in. “The teacher said that the medical team is coming soon. I will wait here until they come,” Hannah comforted her. Just then the teacher arrived. On hearing this, he said, “You are already the champion of this race in terms of sportsmanship, even if you wouldn’t be the first to cross the finish line.”

C
D
