As I wandered out of my New York apartment, behind me someone called out, “Where can I find peaches?” I turned around to see a woman standing outside the greengrocer’s. The absurdity of the moment struck me — why would someone want peaches in the middle of winter? It is just as absurd as sitting by the pool on a blistering summer day and reaching for a warm, woolly jumper.
I was already aware of the issues facing the food system: industrial farming ruining soils, unclear supply chains leaving citizens powerless in making the right buying decisions, and the dominance of ultra-processed foods with zero nutritional value in supermarkets. But this encounter made me see how normalized it was to expect food out of season.
After graduating, I worked at Wall Street in New York, managing portfolios Despite the breathtaking view and fast-paced stock market, I was troubled by the greed underlying my work. Cooking was my escape. It had always been a passion, whether in Buenos Aires, at university, or in New York.
As I neared my 30s, I knew I needed a change and food became my north star. Through my work visiting markets and farmers around Europe, I saw first-hand why seasonality is critical in our ability to regain control of, and fix, our food system. All around me I could see how quickly flavour was disappearing from our plates. I wanted to reintroduce phenomenal flavour into people’s lives, and to re-educate and reconnect consumers with nature. In 2004, I took over Natoora, a French-founded company with a small base in London, determined to reintroduce great flavor to people’s lives and reconnect them with nature.
My two-decade-long devotion to flavor, initially a pursuit of personal pleasure, has given my work a deep sense of purpose. Flavor can emotionally connect us to food and bring joy back into our relationship with it. Changing careers opened a new world for me, filled with purpose and love for my work, and I hope it inspires others to fight for a better food-centric world.
4. Why does the author mention the encounter with a woman?
A. To illustrate an absurd shopping choice. B. To highlight a problem in the food system.
C. To compare between peaches and jumpers. D. To show people’s separation from farming.
5. What does the author think of cooking?
A. Healing. B. Troublesome. C. Demanding. D. Instructive.
6. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. People will improve flavors on their tables soon.
B. Consumers are not willing to get close to nature.
C. Our food system is in need of our great attention.
D. All the markets in Europe sell food out of season.
7. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Add a Unique flavor to Your career B. The Great Power of Seasonal Eating
C. Approaches to Fixing the Food System D. From Wall Street to the World of Flavor
C
Scientists have revealed much of the basics about earthquakes: tectonic plates (构造板块) move, causing strain energy (应变能) to build up, and that energy eventually releases in the form of an earthquake. However, forecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake. In addition to causing a tsunami that led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it resulted in more than 18,000 deaths.
In recent years researchers have been trying to figure out a possible relation between the sun and earthquakes. Based on a previous study that connected solar activity with earthquakes, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba (UT) cast light on this possibility, confirming that sunspot numbers had some influence on earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by solar heat, played a role.
“Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties and underground water movement,” said Junqueira Saldanha, leader of the research team. “Such changes can make rocks tend to break apart. For example, the changes in rainfall and snowmelt can affect the pressure on tectonic plate boundaries. While these factors may not be the main drivers of earthquakes, they could still be playing a role that can help to predict earthquakes.”
Among other findings, the researchers used mathematical and computational methods to analyze earthquake data alongside solar activity records and surface temperatures on Earth. They observed that when they included Earth surface temperatures into their model, the forecasting became more accurate, especially for shallow earthquakes. “That makes sense, since heat and water mostly affect the upper layers of the Earth’s crust (地壳),” said Saldanha.
The findings suggest the transfer of solar heat to the surface of the Earth does affect earthquakes, however minutely, and that incorporating solar activity predictions into detailed Earth temperature models may help issue earthquake forecasts. “It’s an exciting direction, and we hope our study can decipher the bigger picture of what causes earthquakes,” said Saldanha.
8. Why did the author mention Tohoku earthquake in Paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate the movement of tectonic plates.
B. To illustrate the difficulty in earthquake forecast.
C. To reveal the heavy losses caused by earthquakes.
D. To stress the necessity of weakening strain energy.
9. What does the study by UT mainly focus on?
A. The climate change caused by earthquakes.
B. The impact of solar activity on atmosphere.
C. The reasons for increased sunspot numbers.
D. The link between sunspots and earthquakes.
10. Which of the following would Saldanha agree?
A. Solar heat decides earthquake frequency.
B. Tectonic plate pressure grows constantly.
C. Earthquakes occur in the crust’s upper layer.
D. Solar activity data helps predict earthquakes.
11. What does the underlined word “decipher” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Reveal. B. Distinguish. C. Expand. D. Assess.
D
Most artwork displayed in a typical art gallery includes beautiful landscapes and people as we’re drawn to beautiful things. Artwork that does not fit typical beauty standards is reserved for terrible themes, existing only to remind us of the terrible parts of life that we prefer not to think about.
The University’s Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) exhibited“Beyond Beauty”, an exhibition showcasing artwork that does not fit the “perfect” beauty standards of other art. Preconceived (先入为主的) views of art and beauty are what “Beyond Beauty” seeks to change by surrounding visitors with uncomfortable descriptions of the human condition. Each piece describes humans as less-than-perfect in the traditional sense, with the collection including the “ugly side” of society like interpretations of death and social ills, and has an enormous power, producing strong emotional responses.
Some artists are found not to steer clear of the depressing themes modern society and museums rarely choose. One striking work displayed in the exhibition is “Constellated in Brief and Darkly” by printmaker Rosemarie Bernardi, which shows deep insight into the realities of medical practice and stimulates conversation around the complex and painful theme of congenital (先天性的) abnormality.
The development of“Beyond Beauty” started with the installation of a clown (小丑) painting. Visitors were forced to consider a colorful, unconventional painting alongside old master artworks. The MAG received comments from visitors who suggested keeping the terrible art away from their beloved traditional landscapes. Others found the painting to be engaging, which improved their museum experience.
Now, Condo’s “The Clown” sits at the front of the exhibition, welcoming visitors in. After this visit, they may consider “ugliness” not as something to be rejected, but something that is to be welcomed. As today’s society sets impossible beauty standards, it’s as important as ever to remember beauty does not exist in just one form, and public views of “ugly” do not tell the whole story. Without the inclusion of the “ugly” side, we lose the descriptions that define entire groups of people and time periods.
12. What is the feature of artworks in the exhibition?
A. They are completed imperfectly. B. They show negative aspects of humanity.
C. They fit preconceived views of art. D. They focus on the unnoticeable social ills.
13. What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Appreciate. B. Understand. C. Avoid. D. Criticize.
14. What can be known about the clown painting?
A. It is from an old master. B. It receives mixed reviews.
C. It sets a new standard for art. D. It is about society’s problems.
15. What does the author say about ugliness?
A. It takes several different forms. B. Welcoming it is simple for the public.
C. It is more common than beauty. D. The general opinion on it is one-sided.

根据第二段“I was already aware of the issues facing the food system: industrial farming ruining soils, unclear supply chains leaving citizens powerless in making the right buying decisions, and the dominance of ultra-processed foods with zero nutritional value in supermarkets. But this encounter made me see how normalized it was to expect food out of season. (我已经意识到食品体系面临的问题:工业化农业破坏土壤,不透明的供应链让市民在做出正确购买决定时无能为力,以及超市中零营养价值的超加工食品占据主导地位。但这次相遇让我看到,人们对反季节食品的需求已经变得多么正常。)”可知,作者提到与女士的相遇是为了突出食品体系中存在的问题,即人们对反季节食品习以为常。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Despite the breathtaking view and fast-paced stock market, I was troubled by the greed underlying my work. Cooking was my escape. It had always been a passion, whether in Buenos Aires, at university, or in New York. (尽管有令人惊叹的景色和快节奏的股票市场,但我工作背后的贪婪让我烦恼。烹饪是我的避风港。无论是在布宜诺斯艾利斯、大学期间,还是在纽约,烹饪一直是我的爱好。)”可知,在工作带来烦恼时,烹饪能让作者逃离这种负面情绪,所以作者认为烹饪具有治愈作用。故选A。
根据第四段“Through my work visiting markets and farmers around Europe, I saw first-hand why seasonality is critical in our ability to regain control of, and fix, our food system. All around me I could see how quickly flavour was disappearing from our plates. I wanted to reintroduce phenomenal flavour into people’s lives, and to re-educate and reconnect consumers with nature.
From Wall Street to the World of Flavor

根据第一段中的“However, forecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake.(然而,地震预测仍然是一项重大挑战,2011 年的Tohoku大地震就证明了这一点)”可知,提及该地震是为了论证前文“地震预测困难”的观点。
根据第二段中的“Based on a previous study that connected solar activity with earthquakes, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba (UT) cast light on this possibility, confirming that sunspot numbers had some influence on earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by solar heat, played a role.(基于之前的一项将太阳活动与地震联系起来的研究,UT大学的研究人员进行的一项研究揭示了这种可能性,证实了太阳黑子数量对地震和受太阳热量影响的地球气候有一定影响)”可知,该研究聚焦太阳黑子与地震的关联。
根据最后一段“The findings suggest the transfer of solar heat to the surface of the Earth does affect earthquakes, however minutely, and that incorporating solar activity predictions into detailed Earth temperature models may help issue earthquake forecasts.(研究结果表明,太阳热量向地球表面的转移确实会影响地震,尽管影响很小,而且将太阳活动预测纳入详细的地球温度模型可能有助于发布地震预测)”可知,萨尔达尼亚认为太阳活动数据对预测地震有帮助。
故选 A。

B 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第二段中“Preconceived (先入为主的) views of art and beauty are what “Beyond Beauty” seeks to change by surrounding visitors with uncomfortable descriptions of the human condition. Each piece describes humans as less-than-perfect in the traditional sense, with the collection including the “ugly side” of society like interpretations of death and social ills, and has an enormous power, producing strong emotional responses.(“不止于美”试图通过用令人不舒服的描述包围游客改变对艺术和美的先入为主的看法,每一件作品都描述了传统意义上的不完美的人类,包括对死亡和社会弊病的解释等社会“丑陋的一面”,具有巨大的力量,产生强烈的情感反应。)”
根据划线短语句中“Some artists are found not to…the depressing themes modern society and museums rarely choose.( 一些艺术家被发现并没有……现代社会和博物馆很少选择的令人沮丧的主题。)”以及下一句“One striking work displayed in the exhibition is “Constellated in Brief and Darkly” by printmaker Rosemarie Bernardi, which shows deep insight into the realities of medical practice and stimulates conversation around the complex and painful theme of congenital (先天性的) abnormality.( 展览中展出的一件引人注目的作品是版画家Rosemarie Bernardi的《constated in Brief and Darkly》,它展示了对医疗实践现实的深刻洞察,并引发了围绕先天性异常这一复杂而痛苦的主题的讨论。)”
根据倒数第二段中“The MAG received comments from visitors who suggested keeping the terrible art away from their beloved traditional landscapes. Others found the painting to be engaging, which improved their museum experience.( MAG收到了来自游客的评论,他们建议将这些可怕的艺术品远离他们喜爱的传统风景。其他人则认为这幅画很吸引人,这改善了他们的博物馆体验。)”可知,关于这幅画的评价褒贬不一。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“As today’s society sets impossible beauty standards, it’s as important as ever to remember beauty does not exist in just one form, and public views of “ugly” do not tell the whole story. Without the inclusion of the “ugly” side, we lose the descriptions that define entire groups of people and time periods.( 由于当今社会设定了不可能的审美标准,所以我们必须记住,美并不只有一种形式,公众对“丑”的看法并不能说明一切。如果不包含“丑陋”的一面,我们就失去了定义整个人群和时间段的描述。)”可知,公众对“丑陋”的看法并不能说明事情的全貌。如果没有包含“丑陋”的一面,我们就会失去定义整个群体和历史时期的描述。由此可知,作者认为公众对丑陋的看法是片面的。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下列短文,从短文中的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

G. Why shouldn’t she put others’ expectations second if feeling completely overwhelmed?
D 17. A 18. F 19. G 20. B
A tiny, yet mighty word. To hear it can make us feel childlike; sheepish or in trouble.(‘不’,一个微小却有力的词。听到这个词,我们可能会感到幼稚、羞怯或陷入麻烦)”可知,前文聚焦“听到‘不’的感受”,此处应自然过渡到“说‘不’的感受”,形成逻辑上的呼应与延伸。D选项“How does it make you feel to say “no”? Strong? Nervous? Guilty?(说“不”会让你有什么感觉?是坚定?紧张?还是愧疚?)”符合语境。故选D项。
【17题详解】
根据前文“her “no” was absolutely unexpected.(她的“不”完全出人意料)”以及后文“White, male sports experts used the word “selfish”.(白人男性体育专家用“自私”来形容她)”可知,此处需体现外界对拜尔斯“说不”的不同反应。A选项“Reactions were largely supportive, but opinions were divided along political lines in the US. (反应在很大程度上是支持的,但在美国,观点因政治立场而存在分歧)”符合语境。故选A项。
根据前文“For both women, after a lifetime of intensive training, in the world’s gaze, the risks of saying no were huge. (对这两位女性而言,经过一生的高强度训练,在全世界的注视下,说‘不’的风险极大)”以及后文“A superstar athlete such as Biles pulling away from the most honored sporting event... (像拜尔斯这样的超级巨星运动员,为了优先考虑自己的精神状态而退出最受尊崇的体育赛事……)”可知,此处需解释二人“冒巨大风险说不”的核心目的——保护自身。F选项“But the message was that they were removing themselves from systems that might not protect them.(但核心信息是,她们正将自己从可能无法保护她们的体系中抽离出来)”符合语境。故选F项。
根据前文“A superstar athlete such as Biles pulling away from the most honored sporting event in the world to prioritize her state of mind felt culturally influential, yet remarkably simple.(像拜尔斯这样的超级巨星运动员,为了优先考虑自己的精神状态而退出最受尊崇的体育赛事,这在文化层面具有影响力,但其本质却非常简单)”可知,此处需对“简单的本质”进行反问式强化,进一步肯定“优先自身状态”的合理性。
根据后文“According to Steve Magness, an Olympic athletics coach and performance scientist, “You spend years building towards a moment and have external pressure coming at you which transforms into unbelievable internal pressure. I don’t think the everyday person understands that.” Magness has spent a decade researching toughness, namely, our “deep misunderstanding” of what it really means. “The easy dec. was to push onwards no matter what. You can always defend ‘trying’. B选项“The Olympic games are emotionally exhausting. (奥运会在情感上是令人疲惫的)”符合语境。故选B项。
