Do you know when restaurants were invented? The first restaurant was invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. People didn’t order food from a menu. Everyone used to share the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. All of these people had to eat. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the Imperial Way, a very big street in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat the same food as everyone else.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food on the street or at inns—small hotels. Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to restaurants we know today. There was a bigger variety (种类) of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.
Now, restaurants are everywhere. You can buy a variety of different kinds of food. You can have food sent to your door. But remember it wasn’t always like that.

On a cold January morning, a man sat at a subway station in Washington DC and started to play the violin. He played for about 45 minutes.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to take care of his own things.
A minute later, the violinist received his first tip: a woman threw some money without stopping, and walked away.
Only a 3-year-old boy took the music seriously, going over, sitting down and soon losing himself in the wonderful performance. His mother wished to hurry along, but the kid kept looking at the violinist.
When he finished playing, no one noticed it. No one applauded (鼓掌).
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the most talented musicians in the world. He had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Joshua Bell played the same music with the same violin and the seats each cost 100 dollars at a theatre two days before.
Joshua Bell’s playing in the subway station was a social experiment. It asks questions: in a common environment at a wrong hour, do we enjoy beauty? Do we stop to make a response (反应)? If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music, how many other things are we ignoring (忽视)?
31. What’s the man’s purpose of playing the violin at the subway station?
A. To make some money. B. To see people’s response.
C. To practice his skills. D. To teach a music lesson.
32. How many people stopped to listen to the music carefully?

33. The word “tip” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

34. What does the writer suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Don’t be always in a hurry. B. Stop to enjoy street performance.
C. Enjoy beautiful music at a theatre. D. Don’t miss the wonderful moment in life.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. A subway story. B. A music survey. C. A social experiment. D. A talented musician.

Lima, the capital of Peru (秘鲁), is located in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking (俯瞰) the Pacific Ocean. With a population of more than 9 million, Lima is one of the largest cities and the only capital in South America that faces the ocean.
Lima has a long history. The lost Inca civilization is thought to be a mystery. There are many museums, where you can learn how the ancient American Indians founded (建立) the Inca Empire (帝国) and built Machu Picchu (马丘比丘), and why over 90% of Peruvians speak Spanish. Visiting the historic center, you may find you are communicating with both the past and the present.
Lima is also a place where you can find the life styles and fashions, created by its people and culture. You will see Peruvian clothes, dances, and taste their delicious foods. You can see buildings in different styles, enjoy the fantastic sunset over the ancient ruins (废墟), climb the mountains, fly over the ocean, or sit in the restaurants and bars to experience Peruvians’ relaxing life.
You may have heard “It never rains in Lima”. In fact, the special geographic feature makes it not as dry as it is said to be. It is warm all year round. Though it seldom rains in summer, it sometimes drizzles (下毛毛雨) on early winter mornings. The drizzle and the wet air “water” the ground. This makes the crops and the plants grow. Moreover, modern technology helps to bring water from the snow and ice on the top of the Andes (over 6,000m high) for the city to use. People there never waste water.
Lima is such an amazing place that you will never regret visiting it!
36. According to the passage, where is Lima?
A. In South Africa. B. In the eastern coastal part of Peru.
C. In the north of Spain. D. In the central coastal part of Peru.
37. What can we know from the passage?
A. People can learn Inca culture in Lima. B. Lima is the only capital in South America.
C. Lima is rich in water resources. D. Lima has a population of 9 million.
38. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?
A. Lima is said to be very dry, and it is very dry indeed.
B. Lima never rains because of its geographic feature.
C. Lima is said to be very dry, while it is not so dry as it is said to be.
D. Lima’s geographic feature makes Lima sometimes drizzle on early winter mornings.
39. According to the passage, you can’t ________ in Lima.
A. visit the Inca Empire B. enjoy the sunset over the ancient ruins
C. see unique Peruvian clothes and dances D. talk with Peruvians in Spanish
40. Which is probably the best title for the passage?
A. The Lost Inca Civilization B. The Adventures (冒险) of Lima
C. A Great City Worth (值得) Visiting D. Peruvians’ Relaxing Life

七、阅读表达(共5小题,计10分)阅读短文,根据要求完成下面各小题。
In a classroom in any countries, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language. He or she teaches something behind the culture of the country. There are different educational ideas in different cultures.
In a country such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they pay much attention to personal ideas. Teachers try to make each student special. 3 Students don’t have to remember a lot of information, instead, they try their best to find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to have their own ideas. Their education encourages personal thoughts.
In most Asian countries, most people have the same language, history and culture. For this reason, the education there pays more attention to group goals (目标) than personal ideas. Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the ways of teaching are often very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.
In many ways, these differences come from educational ideas. In Western countries teachers are taught to help students to learn. They make it easier for the students to learn by themselves. 4 In some Asian countries, however, teachers often feel that their job is to pass knowledge to students.

Dear Mom,
Happy birthday to you! As your birthday is coming, I want to say how much I love you.
I still remember last month, you asked me to finish homework before playing games, but I got angry and shouted at you. Later, I saw you quietly folding my clothes with red eyes, and I felt so sorry. Thank you for always waking me up gently in the morning and making my favorite dumplings when I’m tired. You always support me when I’m down.
From now on, I’ll listen to you more and study harder. Wish you healthy and happy every day!
Love,
Li Hua
