When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States,Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself,“I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.” No one could have had a more active old age. She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State,at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children,of whom five survived;her husband died in 1927. Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery (刺绣) pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff (僵硬的) to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted.Three of the pictures were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art,and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York.Between the 1930's and her death, she produced some 2000 pictures:careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form.“I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it.” she said. 1.What can we learn about Grandma Moses? A.She stopped painting in her late seventies. B.She still led an active life when she was old. C.Her marriage life was not happy. D.She painted oils as a child. 第一段的最后“No one could have had a more active old age.(没有人的晚年能过得比 Moses更积极。)” B 2.What did Grandma Moses spend most of her life doing? A.Embroidering. B.Farming. C.Nursing. D.Painting. 第二段的“They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State,at Eagle Bridge.(他们一生大部分时间都在耕种,先是在弗吉尼亚,然后是在纽约州,再是在鹰桥。)” B 3.What does the underlined word “portrayals ” in the last paragraph mean? A.Directions. B.Stages. C.Surveys. D.Descriptions. 第三段中的“Between the 1930's and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures:careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form.(从20世纪30年代到去世,她创作了大约2000多幅画:仔细而生动的描绘她所熟知很久的乡村生活,是色彩和形式感的奇妙结合。)” D 4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Grandma Moses:the Best Woman Painter B.Grandma Moses and Her Farm Life C.Grandma Moses and Her Exhibition D.Grandma Moses:A Famous Woman Painter of 20th Century 文章一开头“When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States,Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies.(当谈到美国最著名的20世纪画家,Grandma Moses应该被提及,虽然她直到七十多岁才开始绘画。)” A painting 1. (create) in the 13th century and found in a kitchen in France has sold for £20 million at auction. This makes 2. the most expensive medieval(中世纪的)painting ever sold.Famous for 3. (be) one part of a polyptych(多联画屏),the painting, called The Mocking of Christ,is painted by the Italian artist Cimabue. The painting 4. (see) if there were any valuable items that could be sold, otherwise they would have been thrown away. When she saw the painting,Wolf 6. (immediate) realized it was valuable, although she didn't know it was by Cimabue. It was only after several 7. (profession) tests were carried out that similarities were found with the artist's works. It was predicted that the painting would sell for around £5 million. However,on the day of the auction,8. attracted a crowd of 800 people,an unnamed 9. (buy) paid four times that amount. The auctioneer,Dominique Le Coent, said,“When 10. unique work by a painter as rare as Cimabue comes onto the market, you have to be ready for surprises.” 2.it it指代前一句中的A painting。故填it。 故填being。 故填was discovered。 故填to see。 故填which。 故填a。 Ⅲ. Barry,a promising young man, made a hit recently. His boss awarded him a nice car for the contribution he made to the company. With the new car shinning,he could not wait to have a ride, and try its speed. Barry was used to a fastpaced life and did not like the way his parents lived.“Slow down.”“Watch your step.” These words,in his eyes, mean nothing to a big guy in big cities. He really had benefited a lot since he left his hometown for this city:houses, money and this prize car.For these,he had to work around the clock. While driving,he recalled the days and nights that made what he was now.“Busy hours behind, cozy life ahead.Bug beneath the mud, rocket in the sky.” Being a happy man,he rapped all the way and drove his car fast down the neighborhood street. Everything went quite smoothly at first, but then the road was becoming rougher. “Nothing to worry about, man.” Barry said to himself, speeding down the street. “Watch out!” There seemed a shout somewhere. “I am good!” Barry comforted himself as he always did in such situations. Suddenly,he noticed a figure, who was trying to throw something at him.The next moment,a stone crashed into its back door on the right.Shocked,he pulled up and jumped out, only to find a large dent (凹坑) in his car.A few steps away stood an old man. “What's wrong with you?” Barry shouted at him.“Oh,my car!” “Calm down, young man.” Old man replied. “Calm down? You made that dent in my car!” “Sorry, nothing else I could do.” Old man pointed over Barry's shoulder,“Look!” Barry turned around, and was surprised to find a big hole on the wall of a house a few yards away.“This road is not designed for speeding. The other day,a car rushed into the house,” Old man added,“No one was dead, but the driver of your age was badly hurt.” Staring at the big black hole,Barry broke into a cold sweat. Back to the office,Barry threw himself into his armchair, deep in thought. One possible version: Staring at the big black hole,Barry broke into a cold sweat. He might have run into the house like the badly injured driver had it not for the old man's kind reminder. He thanked the old man millions of times. As they parted, the old man gently squeezed Barry on the shoulder and said softly,“young man, learn to slow down and a host of careless accidents can be avoided.” “Absolutely,I will keep that in mind.” Barry nodded heavily as he turned away. Back to the office,Barry threw himself into his armchair, deep in thought. The old man's words kept ringing by his ear, which he felt made a huge sense. In fact,so quickpaced was he that Barry hardly noticed the No Speeding sign on the roadside,in which case he might have crashed into the same hole and knocked the house down, whose ruins would swallow his car as a whole and bury him alive. At the thought of this,Barry felt the familiar cold sweat returned.“Slow down,” he jotted down the two words on his note sticker and put it up where he could see it easily.
