Colors are used mainly for protecting themselves. Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but they cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops (庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But when the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color as crops have. Some other insects with different colors from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves in the day and appear only at night. If you study the animal life, you'll find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals cannot be easily seen by hunters (猎人). This is because they have the colors much like the trees. A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid is around, its enemies (敌人) can't find it. And it runs away at once. So it has lived for millions of years though it is not strong at all. 1. Why do different animals or insects have their special colors? A. Because they want to protect themselves. B. Because they want to attract enemies. C. Because they like changing colors. D. Because they like different colors. 2. When crops are green, locusts look ______. A. red B. brown C. green D. black 3. What do insects with different colors from plants do to protect themselves? A. They appear in the day and hide at night. B. They hide in the day and appear at night. C. If so, your teacher might have told you to stop. Many people think doodling (胡写乱画) may stop you paying attention to what you are doing. But it might be just the opposite. One study shows that doodling may help you remember things you hear. In 2009, researchers asked two groups of people to listen to a phone message. One group was encouraged to doodle, but the other was not. Neither group knew that they would be asked to remember information from the message. But the group that doodled remembered 29% more. Other people suggest other uses for doodling. Jesse Prinz a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw might actually help you solve it. When you come back, you will have a fresh idea and get an answer more quickly. An author named Sunni Brown wrote a book on doodling. She argues that doodling is a tool that can help people think. She admits that people see doodling as doing nothing but she wants to change that. In fact, she owns a business that helps companies improve management effectiveness through doodling. Brown believes doodling is helpful because it includes more than one way of learning. You learn in four ways: seeing, hearing, reading and writing. The more ways you use, the better you learn. And when you doodle while listening to a lecture, you are using all four. You might think that being good at drawing is important for doodling. But if the point of doodling is to help you think, then it does’t matter what the picture looks like. Even if you are not an artist, doodling can help you. So next time you need to focus, pick up a pen and doodle away. 1. What does the last sentence in Paragraph 1 suggest? A. Drawing might be allowed in class. B. Drawing is the first step to doodle. C. Doodling might help students focus. D. Doodling is popular with students 2. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph4 refers to the fact that __________ A. doodling can help people think B. Sunni Brown does business by doodling C. people consider doodling as doing nothing D. Sunni Brown wrote a book about doodling 3. According to the last two paragraphs, doodling __________. A. helps people become better learners B. is useless in listening to a lecture C. requires very good drawing skills D. does not attract any artists 4. The purpose of the passage is to __________. A. do research by doodling B. solve problems by doodling C. help people learn how to doodle D. introduce the benefits of doodling 5. In which section of a newspaper can we probably find this passage? A. Health. B. Education. C. Technology. D. Economy. 【答案】1. C 2. C 3. A 4. D 5. As night falls, the bright light from glass buildings attracts (吸引) the birds, who are usually guided by the light of the moon and stars. The recent collision occurred between the night of Oct 4 and early next morning, when the lights in the building were on for an event. Every year, nearly one billion birds collide with glass in the US, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. In China, bird collisions are also common. In the autumn of 2022 and the spring of 2023, the National Anti-bird Collisions Action Alliance reported a total of 190 cases of bird collision, which included several types of birds listed as second-class protected wildlife. These sad stories could have been avoided if action had been taken. Many countries and regions have put forward building design ideas to help keep birds safe. These include using less glass in building walls and adding bird-friendly materials and stickers (贴纸) onto the buildings’ walls. Turning off lights at night also helps avoid bird collisions. Apart from regulations (规定) for bird-friendly building design, we can also do our part to save birds by putting stickers on the glass windows in our homes and closing the curtains (窗帘) at night. 1. What caused the birds’ death at McCormick Place? A.The glass in the building. B.The weakness of their head bones. C.The strong sunlight and moonlight. D.The perfect images of birds on the glass. 2. Paragraph 3 mainly shows that ________. A.bird collisions with glass are common and serious B.China will take action to deal with bird collisions C.bird collisions with glass happen more often in the US D.Some bird species are endangered because of collisions 3. What is the key solution to bird collisions? A.To cut down light pollution. B.To keep birds far away from buildings. C.To train birds to avoid glass buildings. D.To change building design ideas. 4. What can we personally do to stop bird collisions? A.Turn on lights at night. B.Add stickers on the glass windows. C.Keep curtains closed in the daytime. D.Use soft materials to cover the glass buildings. 5. What’s the purpose of having these regulations? A.To change building design ideas. B.To protect bird species. C.To cut down light pollution. Aleph Farms, a food-tech company, just created the world’s first 3D-printed ribeye steak. The thick and juicy slab (厚片) smelt and tasted just like a steak. But unlike any steak found on a menu or store shelf today, this one didn’t come from a slaughtered animal. Scientists printed it with a machine which is much like a standard 3D-printer. The difference is that this printer used cells (细胞) as a form of living ink. The technology includes the printing of real living cells that are grown in a lab. They are given nutrients (养分) and kept at a temperature that lets them keep growing. Interest in this kind of new meat has grow n in recent years, partly because the technology shows it is possible. Supporters say that if meat can be printed, then no animal would need to lose its life to become people’s food. So, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about the 3D-printed steak. However, we can’t get this new meat on the store shelf yet. Making meat this way is much harder and costs more than raising and killing an animal. One of the most expensive parts is the cell-growth medium (培养基). This mix of nutrients keeps the cells alive and dividing. If scientists can find lower-cost methods, we’ll be in with a chance of getting beef without killing. 1. What does the underlined word “slaughtered” in Paragraph 1 mean? A.Wild. B.Magic. C.Wounded. We need better transport to get around and clean energy to power our homes. How can we live more conveniently? Smart cities may help. Imagine when you are close to your home, your smart watch tells your home to turn on the lights. The Internet of things (物联网) can help to do this. It connects everything to the Internet. It’s like having lots of little smart helpers. They “send messages” to things in the city and let them work together. Big data (数据) works like the brain of the city. It helps the city make decisions. For example, data about cars running in the city shows us about the traffic condition. Data about the humidity (湿度) tells us whether it is going to rain. 5G provides high-speed wireless (无线的) Internet. It makes the Internet of things possible. The speed of 5G can be up to 10 GB per second. We can download a film in just a few seconds. AI helps to deal with the data. More importantly, it learns from the data and becomes smarter.AI can work as a teacher, a tour guide, or even help to design cars and make people work in a safe way. Can a city “see” things? With sensors (传感器) , the answer is yes. Sensors are like a city’s eyes. They are in every corner of the city. They collect data on people and the environment. A smart city can be a bit like a big, clever robot. It can “think” and make decisions to make everything work in a smart way! The bins can “tell” the rubbish trucks when they are full. The buildings can “talk” to computers to help save energy. Different technologies work together to make our city smart. 1. What does the word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.The Internet. More often than not, David leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet or watches TV instead, waiting until the last minute. “But the longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.” Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. “Some people procrastinate cleaning. Some people procrastinate by cleaning,” says Professor Peter Stone. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations,” Stone adds. Some people believe that procrastination will make them thrive. But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and it took them longer. But they thought they did better.” No matter what the cause is, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems. For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving. Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people. Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around. 1. What tasks do young people procrastinate the most? A.Studying and going to bed. B.Surfing the Internet and watching TV. C.Doing homework and cleaning. D.Exercising and planning a vacation. 2. What is one big reason for people’s procrastination? A.They want to avoid doing hard work. B.They fear to lose and let others down. C.They need to finish the top tasks first. D.They plan to do the enjoyable tasks last. 3. The underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 3 most probably means ________. A.spend more time B.give up more easily C.do things better D.make more mistakes 4. What should David do if he wants to stop procrastinating on a writing task? A.Put on some soft music to help think actively. B.Enjoy a favourite ice-cream, and then start to write. C.Search the Internet for enough ideas before starting. D.Pick up a pen and write down possible starting sentences. 5. What can be the best title of this passage? A.A day of a procrastinator. B.Procrastination: yes or no? C.Say goodbye to procrastination. D.Want to feel good now? Procrastinate! 【答案】1. A 2. B 3. C 4. D 5. They are widely used in our daily lives. They can help us read small words in books and take clear photos. They are also used to help people who have trouble seeing things clearly, like those who can’t see far away or those who can’t see things up close. There are many kinds of lenses, but today we will talk about convex and concave lenses. Imagine you’re using a magnifying glass (放大镜) to read small words in a book. What happens when you move the glass closer to the words? The letters get bigger, right? That’s the power of a convex lens. Convex lenses are thicker in the middle and thinner at the sides. When light passes through a convex lens, it is brought together at a single point called the focus. This is why magnifying glasses, camera lenses, and even the lenses for some old people use convex lenses to see more clearly. Different from convex lenses, concave lenses are thinner in the middle and thicker at the sides. When light passes through concave lenses, it spreads out. You can find concave lenses in your daily life. For example, if you are nearsighted (近视的), your glasses probably have concave lenses. You are nearsighted because the light entering your eyes does not focus exactly on the retina (视网膜). When you wear glasses with concave lenses, the light spreads out first and then enters the eyes, allowing it to focus correctly on the retina. In this way, you can see things clearly. 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 1. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A.How lenses work. B.What lenses look like. C.What lenses are used for. D.How many kinds of lenses there are. 2. Which of the following have convex lenses according to the text? a. Cameras.    b. Mirrors.    c. Magnifying glasses.    d. Nearsighted glasses. A.a, c B.a, d C.b, c D.b, d 3. How does the concave lens work? A. B. C. D. 4. How does the writer mainly organize the text in the last paragraph? A.Facts→Opinions. B.Descriptions→Examples. C.Causes→Effects. D.Problems→Solutions. 5. What is the purpose of the text? A.To express feelings of using different lenses. B.To give advice on how to learn physics well. C.To offer information about science in daily life. D.To encourage students to use more modern tools. 【答案】1. C 2. A 3. D 4. B 5. Humans have no balance at birth—they can’t walk or stand. Before that can happen, their body must develop. This takes months, and for some activities, even years. You might have noticed some people are great at keeping balance. But they weren’t born with this ability. Instead, it took practice. The more you practice, the better you become, though some people are naturally skillful at it. Experts say good balance depends on information the brain receives from several body parts. These include the inner ear, eyes, muscles (肌肉), bones and joints (关节). The inner ear plays a major role in balance. The part controlling balance is the vestibular (前庭的) system with five different organs (器官). Inside these organs, there is fluid (液体). When our body and head move, the fluid sends signals to the brain, which in turn helps us know our position and stay balanced. When the vestibular system fails, we may feel dizzy (眩晕的) and fall. Eyesight also matters for balance. We need a clear sense of our surroundings to stay on our feet. If you doubt this, try standing on one foot with your eyes closed. When someone has eyesight problems, their ability to judge distances and depth can lead to loss of balance. Nerves in muscles and joints tell the brain about changes. When you step on ice, the brain quickly sends reaction instructions. If our muscles and joints are weak or slow, we are more likely to fall. Failure in any one of these three systems may result in balance problems. But when one system is affected, the other two can be trained to make up for it. 1. What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Riding skateboards. B.Standing on tiptoes. C.Keeping balance. D.Taking practice. 2. What’s the function of the inner ear in balance? A.To improve eyesight. B.To control body temperature. C.To strengthen muscles and joints. D.To send signals about balance to the brain. 3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text? A.Head plays a key role in keeping balance. B.The balance skills are naturally born in humans. C.Stepping on ice can cause people to think slowly. D.The other systems will improve balance if one doesn’t work. 4. What’s the structure of the text? A. B. C. D. 5. What is the best title for the text? A.The Secrets of Balance B.The Changes of Brain C.The Problems of Eyesight D.The Importance of Muscles 【答案】1. C 2. D 3. D 4. B 5. 根据“You might have noticed some people are great at keeping balance. But they weren’t born with this ability. Instead, it took practice.”可知,你可能已经注意到有些人很擅长保持平衡,但他们并不是天生就有这种能力,而是需要练习。这里的“it”指的是前面提到的“keeping balance”(保持平衡)。故选C。 2. 细节理解题。根据“The inner ear plays a major role in balance. ... When our body and head move, the fluid sends signals to the brain, which in turn helps us know our position and stay balanced.” 根据“Failure in any one of these three systems may result in balance problems. But when one system is affected, the other two can be trained to make up for it.” 故选A。 Passage 1 Boomerang (回旋镖) children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families, leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations, a study has found. The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant decline in their parents’ quality of life and well-being. The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home — the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of parents’ financial and emotional support. Daughters were happier than sons, often slipping back easily into teenage patterns of behaviour, the study found. Parents on the whole were more uncertain, expressing concern about the likely duration of the arrangement and how to manage it. But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities. The families featured in the study were middle-class and tended to view the achievement of adult independence for their children as a “family project”. Parents accepted that their children required supports as university students and then as graduates returning home, as they tried to find jobs paying enough to enable them to move out and get on the housing ladder. “However,” the study says, “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a little over half the graduates.” Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life. While parents were keen to help, they also wanted different relationships from those they had with their own parents, and continuing to support their adult children allowed them to remain close. 1. What is the finding of the previous research? A.The parents’ quality of life became worse than before. B.Boomerang children made their parents even happier than before. C.Boomerang children never did any housework. D.The parents were looking forward to their children’s return. 2. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 2 may be best replaced by ______. A.benefit B.defeat C.cause D.allow 3. What is the attitude of the college graduates towards returning home? A.They are ashamed of turning to their parents for help. B.They are proud to be independent from the family. C.They are doubtful about whether they should return. D.They are glad that they could come back. 4. What can be inferred as the reason for the “boomerang children” phenomenon? A.It is harder for the children to secure a satisfying job. B.The parents are willing to provide support to their children. C.The children want to keep in closer touch with their parents. D.There is more house work needed to be done by the children. 5. What is the side effect of the “boomerang children” phenomenon? A.Both parents and children enjoy a more harmonious relationship. B.Neither parents nor children want to do the chores at home. C.There are occasional quarrels between parents and children. D.Not only parents but also children want to be independent eagerly. 【答案】1. A 2. C 3. D 4. A 5. 根据第二段“The findings contradict research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant decline in their parents’ quality of life and well-being.(这一发现与今年早些时候发表的一项研究结果不一致,早些的研究显示,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感显著恶化)”可知,以往的研究显示,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感比之前更差。故选A。 2. 词句猜测题。根据划线词所在的句子“The findings disagree with the research published earlier this year showing that returning adult children trigger a significant worsening in their parents’ quality of life and wellbeing.(这一发现与今年早些时候发表的一项研究不一致,该研究显示,成年子女回国会trigger父母的生活质量和幸福感显著恶化)”可知,通过新旧研究对比,以往的研究表明,返乡的成年子女会导致父母的生活质量和幸福感显著下降。由此可知,划线词trigger与cause“导致,致使”意义一致。故选C。 3. 细节理解题。根据第三段“The young adults taking part in the study were “more positive than might have been expected” about moving back home — the shame is reduced as so many of their peers are in the same position, and they acknowledged the benefits of parents’ financial and emotional support.(参与这项研究的年轻人对于搬回家“比预期的更积极”——他们的羞愧感减少了,因为他们的许多朋友都处于同样的处境,而且他们承认父母在经济和情感上的支持是有好处的)”可知,大学毕业生对回家的态度是积极的,很高兴能够回家,故选D。 4. 推理判断题。根据第四段“But they acknowledged that things were different for graduates today, who leave university with huge debts and fewer job opportunities.(但他们承认,如今的毕业生情况有所不同,他们毕业时背负着巨额债务,工作机会也更少)”可推知,孩子们很难找到一份满意的工作是“回巢族”现象的原因。故选A。 5. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段““However,” the study says,  “day-to-day tensions about the prospects of achieving different  dimensions of independence, which in a few extreme cases came close to  conflict, characterised the experience of a majority of parents and a  little over half the graduates.”(“然而,”该研究称,“实现不同层面独立前景的日常紧张关系,在一些极端情况下接近冲突,是大多数父母和略高于一半的毕业生的经历。”)” 及第最后一段“Areas of disagreement included chores, money and social life.(分歧领域包括家务、金钱和社交生活)”可知,在少数极端情况下,这种紧张情绪接近冲突。由此可知,“回巢族”现象的副作用是在少数情况下,紧张情绪会导致父母和孩子之间偶尔发生争吵。故选D。 Passage 2 A cafe owner has been delivering free soup for one year to a stranger going through chemotherapy (化疗). He serves up much more than meals — he has spent the last year serving up kindness to a stranger who loved his cooking. Juan Carlos Beristain runs JC’s Cafe in Cary, Illinois. In addition to making coffee, the 49-year-old man is famous for serving up many delicious soups. Noah Dionesotes is just one of the local people who adore Beristain’s soups. Being in poor health, Dionesotes has been depending on the soups as a valuable source of nutrition (营养来源) throughout his chemotherapy treatments. Beristain learned of Dionesotes’s health problems sometime last year after he saw a neighbor’s Facebook post about the man’s condition — and his love for the cafe’s soups. Beristain filled up a few cups of fresh soup at once and brought them to Dionesotes’s house. Dionesotes was surprised to find Beristain on his doorstep with food in hand — and he was even more shocked when Beristain told him not to worry about payment. Ever since that first meeting, Beristain has been delivering free soup to Dionesotes’s house as often as four times per week for the last year. “I really feel it when other people are in pain,” Beristain said. “I felt that I could help him at least by delivering the soup that he likes, with the nutrition that is going to help him.” Though Dionesotes’s friends are now trying to raise money for his next round of chemotherapy treatments, he says that Beristain’s kindness has been a very helpful kind of treatment for his illness. “I think he’s a great human,” said Dionesotes. 1. Experiments suggest that people who are shown pictures of their clogged arteries (动脉阻塞)  may be more likely to stay healthy than people who are not. Researchers studied just over 3,500 people. These people were between 40 and 60 years of age. Each person had at least one risk for heart disease, but no signs. The researchers divided these subjects into two groups. The first group received what was called usual care like taking medicine or talking with health care workers about heart disease. However, the members of the other group were shown pictures of their arteries. Researchers also gave them special guidance on why those pictures might be a sign of future health problems. One year later, the people who watched the images of their own arteries had less risk for heart disease than those who weren't shown the pictures. That is where the “pictures” part may help. Doctors warn that many people think they have healthy hearts but, actually, they do not. Clogged arteries can be a silent killer. It takes many years to develop and patients may show no signs until the condition is serious and difficult to treat. Because it is a silent killer, experts say patients only remember a small part of what their doctor tells them to do Seeing a picture is much more effective. To use a popular English expression, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Smoking, an unhealthy habit, and being short of exercise increase the risk of heart attacks. Exercising for at least 30 minutes every day of the week will help to prevent heart disease. Eating at least five servings(份) of fruit and vegetables a day, and limiting your salt intake to less than one spoon a day, also helps to prevent heart attacks. 1. What can we learn from the second paragraph? A.Both of the two groups received so-called usual care. B.More than 3,500 people of all ages took part in the study. C.Those people who attended the research might have heart disease. D.Heart disease is more difficult to treat without medicine. 2. What is the influence of seeing the arterial picture on heart disease? A.It can make people eat more. B.It can be a silent killer. C.It can lower the risk of heart disease. D.It has no effect on heart disease. 3. Why are clogged arteries a silent killer? A.Because some people are doubtful about what doctors say. B.Because the illness has a bad influence on people's brain health. C.Because clogged arteries can kill a person in a short time. D.Because people can’t feel the development of the disease. 4. What should we do to prevent heart attacks according to the text? A.Stop or avoid smoking. B.Take as much sugar as salt. C.Exercise once a week. D.Eat as many nuts as possible. 5. Which of the following is most likely to benefit from the findings? A.A food provider. B.A health helper. C.A safety researcher. D.A medicine seller. 【答案】1. C 2. C 3. D 4. A 5. 根据第二段“Each person had at least one risk for heart disease, but no signs.(每个人都至少有一个患心脏病的风险因素,但没有症状。)”可知,参与研究的人可能有患心脏病的风险。故选C项。 2. 细节理解题。根据第二段“One year later, the people who watched the images of their own arteries had less risk for heart disease than those who weren’t shown the pictures.(一年后,看过自己动脉图像的人患心脏病的风险比未看图片的人更低。)”可知,看动脉图片能降低心脏病风险。故选C项。 3. 细节理解题。根据第三段“Clogged arteries can be a silent killer. It takes many years to develop and patients may show no signs until the condition is serious and difficult to treat.(动脉阻塞可能是无声的杀手。它需要多年发展,患者可能在病情严重且难以治疗之前没有任何症状。)”可知,说“动脉阻塞可能是无声的杀手”是因为人们无法感知疾病发展。故选D项。 4. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Smoking, an unhealthy habit, and being short of exercise increase the risk of heart attacks.(吸烟,一种不健康的习惯,和缺乏锻炼会增加心脏病发作的风险。)”可推断,戒烟或避免吸烟有助于预防心脏病。故选A项。 5. 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“When it comes to having a healthy body, seeing may be believing. Experiments suggest that people who are shown pictures of their clogged arteries (动脉阻塞)   may be more likely to stay healthy than people who are not.(说到拥有健康的身体,眼见为实。实验表明,看到动脉堵塞照片的人可能比没有看到的人更有可能保持健康。)”再结合第三段“Seeing a picture is much more effective(看图片更有效)”可知,文章主要讲“看动脉图片有助于提高健康意识、降低心脏病风险”,所以健康辅助工作者(如提供健康指导或影像检查服务的人)最可能从该发现中受益,故选B项。 Passage 5 As well as impressive physical characteristics, elephants have rich cultural customs, passed down through customs and social behaviour which is learned, remembered, and shared within their herds (种群). This is possible partly because of their social structure. Elephants live in complex, tightly knit, multi-generational societies, led by older females known as matriarch (女家长). Younger elephants observe and imitate the behaviour of their elders, learning through experience. It helps that the herd does almost everything together, from feeding to raising each others’ young. These communications lead to deep long-lasting relationships, which can last for decades. Possibly because of these links, elephants seem to have emotional capability. Just like humans, the creatures have been seen displaying signs of grief. When an elephant dies, others in the herd have been observed to repeatedly return to where the individual passed, which is said to be part of a mourning (哀悼) ceremony. They may sniff and touch the body and bones and cover the site with leaves and sand. Moreover, a 2020 study by researchers Goldenberg and Wittemyer found that “elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”, which may indicate advanced sensation, the scientists say. There’s a saying found in many languages — “an elephant never forgets”. In fact, memory has been necessary to the survival of some elephant herds. A study within Great Kruger National Park found that, during an extreme drought in 2016, elephant groups led by matriarchs who had previously lived through a serious drought, had higher survival rates. Researchers concluded that the matriarchs likely remembered where sources of water could be located. So, count yourself lucky that you live on the same planet as these large majestic animals. 1. What is the main idea of the second paragraph? A.How elephants develop cultural traditions through social structure. B.The physical characteristics of elephant herds. C.The dangers faced by young elephants. D.The diet of elephants in different seasons. 2. What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph mean? A.physical strength. B.ability to feel emotions. C.hunting skills. D.communication methods. 3. According to the 2020 study, what behavior did elephants show toward the dead? A.They only mourned close family members. B.They avoided the remains of dead elephants. C.They showed interest regardless of past relationships. D.They buried the dead immediately after death. 4. Why does the author mention the 2016 drought in Great Kruger National Park? A.To prove elephants have poor survival skills. B.To show the importance of memory in elephant survival. C.To criticize human interference in nature. D.To explain how elephants find food. 5. What is the author’s attitude toward elephants in the last sentence ? A.Indifferent. B.Admiring. C.Doubtful. D.Negative. 【答案】1. A 2. B 3. C 4. B 5. 根据第二段“This is possible partly because of their social structure. Younger elephants observe and imitate the behaviour of their elders, learning through experience.(这在一定程度上是因为它们的社会结构。大象生活在复杂、紧密结合、多代同堂的社会中,由年长的雌象领导。年轻的大象观察并模仿它们长辈的行为,通过经验学习。)”可知,第二段主要讲述了大象如何通过社会结构发展文化传统。故选A。 2. 词句猜测题。根据上文“Possibly because of these links, elephants seem to have emotional capability.(或许由于这些联系,大象似乎具备情感能力。)”和下文“which may indicate advanced sensation(这可能表明它们具有高级的感知能力)”可知,大象似乎具有感受情绪的能力,由此可知,划线句子的“elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”意为“感受情绪的能力”。故选B。 3. 细节理解题。根据第三段“a 2020 study by researchers Goldenberg and Wittemyer found that “elephants show broad interest in their dead regardless of the strength of former relationships with the dead individual”(2020年,研究人员Goldenberg和Wittemyer的一项研究发现,“大象对它们的死者表现出广泛的兴趣,无论它们与死者之前的关系如何。”)”可知,根据2020年的研究,大象对死者表现出了无论过去的关系如何,它们都表现出兴趣。故选C。 4. 推理判断题。根据第四段“A study within Great Kruger National Park found that, during an extreme drought in 2016, elephant groups led by matriarchs who had previously lived through a serious drought, had higher survival rates. Researchers concluded that the matriarchs likely remembered where sources of water could be located.(大克鲁格国家公园内的一项研究发现,在2016年的一场极端干旱中,由经历过严重干旱的母象领导的象群具有更高的存活率。研究人员得出结论,母象可能记得水源的位置。)”可知,作者提到大克鲁格国家公园2016年的干旱是为了展示记忆在大象生存中的重要性。故选B。 5. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“So, count yourself lucky that you live on the same planet as these large majestic animals.(所以,你应该庆幸自己和这些大型威严的动物生活在同一个星球上。)”可知,作者对大象持钦佩的态度。故选B。 Passage 6 Ashley Liberto and her dog Bentley have been inseparable since she got him eight years ago. When Bentley had trouble walking a few years ago, Liberto was worried. “I took him to the pet hospital. He was diagnosed (诊断) with an amputated (截肢) right elbow and would need a prosthetic leg,” Liberto says. Luckily, the surgery (外科手术) was a success. After Bentley started moving again on three legs, Liberto decided to get a custom prosthetic leg (定制的假肢) for him. When she saw the cost of custom dog prosthetics, the teacher at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina reached out to some of her former students for help in finding a more affordable choice. Providence Day School has a class focused on computer- aided design (计算机辅助设计) and 3D printing. The teacher, Todd Johnson, says, “It’s an introductory level class that teaches students to make basic shapes using the technology. But when Liberto suggested trying to make a prosthetic leg for her dog, the students were excited to help and try something new.” “I thought it was a chance for the students to see a real- world application of what they were learning at school. I knew once the students started thinking about it seriously, they would come up with excellent designs,” Johnson says. The class broke up into small groups to come up with designs for Bentley. Team leader Brandon Hollis and his group came up with the winning design. Hollis group spent weeks creating a prosthetic leg for Bentley. “It fit way better than I could have hoped for. It still needs some small changes, and then it should fit perfectly,” Hollis says. The students hope to have a finished custom ( adj.量身设计的) and comfortable prosthetic leg for Bentley in the next few weeks. Even though the class has ended, the young designers have continued the project on their own time. 1. What happened to Bentley? A.He was hit by a car. B.He had a terrible illness. C.He got lost on his way home. D.He got separated from his owner. 2. What did Liberto do for Bentley? A.She provided some students to play with him. B.She tried to get a new leg for him. C.She gave him some walking training. D.She found a new home for him. 3. How did the students feel about making a leg? A.It was a piece of cake to them. B.They were excited to try something new prosthetic C.They didn’t take it seriously. D.It was too hard for them to finish. 4. What does Johnson expect of his students? A.They can put what they’re learning in the classroom into practice. B.They can think carefully about what they want to learn. C.They can pay some attention to animal protection. D.They can develop new 3D printing technology. 5. What is Hollis and his group’s plan for the next few weeks? A.Sharing their design with others. B.Offering free design courses. C. They hide themselves day and night. D. They move quietly. 4. Why has the fish lived for millions of years? A. Because it is strong. B. Because it has the same color as the sea. C. Because it can change its color when in danger. D. Because it can send out a kind of liquid and run away when in danger. 5. What can we learn from the passage? A. Some birds can easily catch locusts. B. When the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown color. C. Bears and lions can be easily seen by hunters. D. While the black liquid is around, enemies can find the fish. Passage B (2024.1・广东春季高考)Have you ever drawn pictures on your notebooks when you are siting in class? A. Health. B. Education. C. Technology. D. Economy. Passage 1 Once upon a time, there was a poor man living in an old and small house. There were mice and spider (蜘蛛) webs everywhere. It’s very famous not only because it’s a simple yet heart-warming dish, but also because it carries a touching story of respect for the elderly and love. Long ago, there was a kind woman who cared deeply for her mother-in-law, because the old lady often coughed, especially on cold days. She tried hard to help her mother-in-law. Finally, she and her sister came up with a good idea. They created a special dish—ginger milk. The old lady’s health improved because of the dessert. People were so   moved by their care and respect for the elderly that they began to remember the sisters by showing their story in art. To make ginger milk, you start by washing fresh ginger, then cut it and extract (提取) its juice. Next, pour milk into a pot, add sugar and heat it, but be careful not to let the milk boil. Pour the ginger soup into a bowl and then carefully pour the heated milk into the bowl from a slight (轻微的) height, which helps the milk and ginger mix together. Don’t move it! Keep it still for ten minutes. Now the ginger milk is ready to be enjoyed. Ginger milk is more than just a dessert. It’s a symbol of love, care and tradition. It’s covered in glass, which is enjoyable for humans but deadly for birds. On Oct 5, nearly 1000 birds were found dead after having collided (碰撞) with the building’s glass walls. Most of them died on the spot because of broken bones in their heads. One key reason is the glass. The birds get fooled by it. During the day, the birds fly toward it as it reflects (反射) a perfect image of the sky and nearby trees. D.To protect glass buildings. Passage 2 Can you imagine people will enjoy a mouth-watering, delicious ribeye steak (肉眼牛排) without harming a single animal? A.Wild. B.Magic. C.Wounded. D.Killed. 2. How was the 3D-printed steak created by the food-tech company? A.It was grown from living cells in the lab. B.It was given nutrients by killing an animal. C.It was produced by a standard 3D-printer. D.It was kept at a low temperature to grow. 3. According to the passage, the writer’s opinion about 3D-printed meat may be ________. A.doubtful B.hopeful C.curious D.disappointed 4. Why can’t we buy 3D-printed steak in the store yet? A.Because it’s not easy to grow cells needed to produce it. B.Because it takes long to keep the cells alive and dividing. C.Because it’s difficult and expensive to make this new meat. D.Because it’s hard and expensive to raise and kill an animal. 5. What’s the passage mainly about? A.The development of 3D-printed steak. B.The introduction of 3D-printed steak. C.The delicious taste of 3D-printed steak. D.The advantages of 3D-printed steak. Passage 3 Today, cities are getting bigger and busier, which brings us challenges. B.The smart watch. C.The Internet of things. D.The smart home. 2. What are the advantages of big data according to the passage? a. Showing the traffic condition.              b. Helping people make decisions. c. Working like the cars of the city.         d. Telling whether it is going to rain. A.a and b B.c and d C.b and c D.a and d 3. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 is written to show_____. A.what 5G is B.how 5G works C.how fast 5G is D.what the price of 5G is 4. Which is the right structure of the passage? (① =Paragraph 1  ② =Paragraph 2,…) A. B. C. D. 5. What’s the best title for the passage? A.How Can We Live Safely? B.What Makes a City Smart? C.Where Are the Smart Cities? D.Why Do We Need the Internet of Things? Passage 4 The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics are coming. As we look forward to the event, there is much to be learned about it. According to a new report, the organizers promise to do less harm to the environment by minimizing the number of newly-built facility (设施). In Paris, 95 percent of stadiums (体育馆) are either already built or will be set up for short-term use. About 11,000 seats in two stadiums, Arena at Porte de la Chapelle in Paris and the Olympic aquatic center in Saint-Denis, will use recycled plastic chairs. The decision was made after local manufacturers (制造商) found there weren’t enough plastic materials, which led them to turn to recycled waste. The organizers began working with Lemon Tri and Le Pavé. The two companies got an idea of getting plastic waste from recycling bins around the city. Over 100 tons of plastic is needed to make the seats and 80 percent of it is collected from local schools and street-side bins in Seine-Saint-Denis. It is also where the plastic waste is processed into new materials. “We ask children to put their plastic bottles in the bins and tell them they’ll become the seats of the Olympic swimming pool. This helps them learn about the importance of recycling waste and how small actions can lead to big changes,” says Augustin Jaclin from Lemon Tri. Of course, collecting plastic is one thing and turning it into Olympic chairs is another. After all, making them is not as easy as making normal chairs. 1. The underlined word “minimizing” in Paragraph 2 means “________”. A.making something smaller B.making something cheaper C.making something cleaner D.making something safer 2. Why did local manufacturers decide to make recycled plastic chairs? A.They produced less waste. B.They were cheaper to produce. C.They were short of plastic materials. A.how the plastic waste is processed B.where the recycled plastics come from C.how many chairs will be made of plastic waste D.why the organizers work with Lemon Tri and Le Pavé 4. What does Augustin Jaclin think of collecting children’s plastic bottles? A.It is challenging. B.It is tiring but creative. C.It educates children about recycling. D.It makes children interested in the Olympics. 5. What is the best title for the passage? A.Two Companies Behind the Paris Olympics B.New Stadiums Are Ready for the 2024 Olympics C.A Good Way to Teach the Public About Recycling D.Paris Olympics Use Recycled Plastics to Make Seats Passage 5 Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. Passage 6 Recently, DeepSeek has become very important in the technology world. It has caused a lot of excitement in the AI industry. DeepSeek uses an open-source strategy. This means it doesn’t share all its training data, but it does share important parts like the model structure, parameters, and training methods. This offers a great opportunity for developers, including the young talents from universities such as the University of Hong Kong and Peking University. They can now make use of these resources to explore the limitless possibilities of AI and carry out innovative (创新的) research. What really makes DeepSeek different is its great improvement in adapting (适应) to the domestic situation. Because of the possible technology limits from other countries, especially the strict controls on chip exports by some Western countries. This has influenced companies like Nvidia. For example, DeepSeek has worked with the domestic (国内的) chip maker Hygon. They have successfully made the DeepSeek models match the domestic DCU chips well. This achievement reduces our reliance on foreign chips to a certain degree. It also greatly helps the development of China’s domestic AI and chip industries. It builds the base for a more independent and creative future in the tech field. In short, DeepSeek is playing an important role. It is inspiring a new generation of young people to get involved in and contribute to the exciting world of AI. 1. What strategy has DeepSeek adopted in its AI development? Passage 7 Lenses (镜片) are useful tools that help us see things more clearly. 1. Passage 8 No one is born with skills like surfing, skateboarding or standing on their tiptoes. A.The Secrets of Balance B.The Changes of Brain C.The Problems of Eyesight D.The Importance of Muscles Passage 1 Boomerang (回旋镖) children who return to live with their parents after university can be good for families, leading to closer, more supportive relationships and increased contact between the generations, a study has found. Passage 2 A cafe owner has been delivering free soup for one year to a stranger going through chemotherapy (化疗). 1. Passage 3 A man known for his generous acts of mowing lawns (修剪草坪) for free has sparked an extraordinary wave of kindness, raising over$700,000 for an elderly woman named Beth. Spencer, from CS Mowing, was contacted by a friend at the city about Beth, who was struggling with an overgrown lawn. The city had issued a warning, threatening to charge her $240 for maintenance — a fee she couldn’t afford. Spencer visited Beth’s home, where she shared her struggles in finding help. Moved by her situation, he transformed her lawn for free. Beth was overwhelmed (溢于言表的) with gratitude, brought to tears by the kind gesture. Spencer shared the heartwarming transformation in a video titled “Her Tears Said It All: “My Prayers Have Been Answered””, and the response was overwhelming. Viewers were eager to help Beth beyond her lawn, suggesting donations to address accessibility issues at her home, such as installing a ramp, repairing her driveway, and adding a chair lift. Spencer set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of $100,000, but the donations quickly surpassed expectations. Over 28,000 people contributed; with one donor giving $2,500. Messages poured in from donors who were inspired by Spencer’s kindness and Beth’s story. “I love this story. This is everything that is good in the world. Beth, I hope you get all the upgrades you can and are able to enjoy them,” one donor wrote. Spencer recorded the moment he informed Beth about the fundraising efforts. Her reaction was pure and emotional, as she tearfully asked, “Why?” Spencer replied; “They kind of fell in love with you and your story. D.Beth’s improved living situation will inspire more positive social actions. Passage 4 When it comes to having a healthy body, seeing may be believing. Passage 5 As well as impressive physical characteristics, elephants have rich cultural customs, passed down through customs and social behaviour which is learned, remembered, and shared within their herds (种群). B.Admiring. C.Doubtful. D.Negative. Passage 6 Ashley Liberto and her dog Bentley have been inseparable since she got him eight years ago.
