B In the early 19th century, New England farmers, tired of wrestling with their poor land, journeyed to the Midwest. In states like Illinois and Iowa, they found rich, black soil. Unfortunately, many soon felt like thirsty sailors in the middle of the ocean—water everywhere but not a drop to drink. They were surrounded by fertile soil, but had to stop every few seconds to remove the sticky dirt off their iron plows (犁) with large wooden paddles. This dilemma caught the attention of John Deere, a blacksmith who moved to Illinois in 1836. Deere decided to look into the problem. From his previous work on plows, he knew that dirt was less likely to stick to highly polished metal. That thought was in the back of his mind when he visited a sawmill (锯木厂) in 1837 and noticed a broken saw made of steel. Deere brought it home and began making a better plow. The plow he wanted would have to cut deep into the soil at a sharp angle so that dirt would fall off, yet it could not put too much burden on the horses pulling it. After several experiments, Deere constructed a new plow that featured wood handles. It proved a success. Unlike the old iron plows, Deere’s not only had a blade from which dirt fell away cleanly, but it also turned the soil more efficiently and quickly. Demand for Deere’s plows increased sharply, but production was limited by the shortage of polished steel. Initially, Deere could only produce a few plows each year. However, Deere’s persistence paid off as he sourced cheaper steel from Pittsburgh. Amazingly, in 1857, his company manufactured and sold 10, 000 plows! Deere, a perfectionist, continually improved his plows, introducing multiple new versions in a single year. While this slowed down his production ability, it ensured Deere a solid reputation among his customers. Deere plows became world famous in the 1870s when they outshone the competition in a demonstration in France. That same decade, his company built its first riding plow and designed the leaping deer as its trademark. 4. What was the main problem the newly settled farmers met? A. A shortage of fresh water. B. A lack of rich farming land. C. The trouble in handling the soil on plows. D. The difficulty of growing plants in season. 5. Which aspect of the new plow does paragraph 2 focus on? A. Its unique features. B. Its operating method. C. Its invention process. D. Its working efficiency. 6. The last paragraph is mainly about Deere plows’____. A wide recognition B. marketing strategy C. technical standards D. production challenges 7. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. A Famed Farmer B. A Successful Company C. A Sticky Problem D. A Historical Experiment C Soratobu Medaka, a children’s book, tells the story of tiny medaka fish riding on a bird to a distant pond. It has delighted children, but now it’s revealed to be true. Researchers have long struggled to explain how fish turn up in lakes far from other bodies of water, a mystery even Charles Darwin noted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick to the feet of birds, though his bright idea remained a theory. In 2019, Yao Akifumi, a biology student then, wondered if Darwin might have been right and further wondered if fish-hunting birds might transport egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck to their feet. To test this, he set up two ponds one metre apart, one containing 36plants and the other without, both equipped with camera traps. After six months, some plants had switched ponds, and one camera captured a bird flying away with a plant on its foot. Next, Yao aimed to see if fish eggs could weather the journey being carried out of water. He attached tiny medaka eggs to aquatic plants and removed them for zero to 24hours—at favorable hatching conditions — before returning them. In a paper in Science of Nature, Mr. Yao reports that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up to 18 hours out of the water. Eggs without a plant leaf to attach to rarely survived a few hours. The big drop in survival was at 16.3 hours, when half the eggs became lifeless. Whether any egg could survive that long, given that a bird’s average flight-speed is around 39kph, is doubtful, says Mr Yao, since wind exposure during such a long journey would dry them out. Shorter journeys, however, are certainly possible. And since many other medaka-like species are found throughout Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains how they have ended up in lakes with seemingly no connection to other water bodies. Yet again, it would seem, Darwin’s theories turn out to be correct. 8. Why does the author mention Darwin’s idea? A. To introduce an academic term. B. To provide research background. C. To question a well-known theory. D. To explore new research methods. 9. What evidence did Yao find to support his assumption? A. Birds flying between ponds. B. Fish eggs surviving on plants. C. A plant growing in both ponds. D. A bird carrying a plant on its foot. 10. What may increase medaka eggs’ survival? A. Birds’ flying route. B. Wind exposure. C. Supporting leaves. D. Longer journeys. 11. What is the main idea of the text? A. Children’s book inspires research. B. Origin of fish has been uncovered. C. Fish’s hitch riding has been proven. D. Eggs and plants have a close relation. D The idea that night owls who don’t go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early. Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants’ sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (时间型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stay up late and those classed as “intermediate” had “superior cognitive function”, while morning larks had the lowest scores. Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include James Joyce and Lady Gaga. But while politicians like Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night performing best in cognitive tests. Prof Daqing Ma, the co-leader of the study, added, “We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting and safeguarding the way our brains work. We’d ideally like to see policy interventions (干预) to help sleep patterns improve in the general population.” Some experts, however, urged caution in interpreting the findings. Jessica Chelekis, a sleep expert at Brunel University London, said there were “important limitations” to the study as the research did not account for education attainment, or include the time of day the cognitive tests were conducted in the results. The main value of the study was challenging stereotypes around sleep, she added. 12. Why are James Joyce and Lady Gaga mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To provide examples of intermediate people. B. To suggest most successful artists are night owls. C. To prove artists have superior cognitive function. D. To show the link between late hours and creativity. 13. Which statement will Prof Daqing Ma probably agree with? A. All sleep lengths equally improve brain function. B. Parents shouldn’t intervene in children’s sleep pattern. C. Schools should start later to fit teens’ body clocks. D. Sleep duration is more important than sleep quality. 14. What does the underlined word “stereotypes” mean in the fourth paragraph? A. Scientific discoveries. B. Personal preferences. C. Fixed beliefs. D. Recent trends. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards the new study? A. Objective. B. Skeptical. C. Appreciative D. Critical. I’ve always disliked getting up in winter. School books were tough for her, and when it came to free time, she stuck to picture books and listened to “Harry Potter” audiobooks. None of these really got her into deep reading, where you stare at words on paper and let your imagination fly. For a while, I had to face the truth: I hadn’t passed on the joy of reading to her. I tried telling her how reading makes life richer, but she shrugged (耸肩) and said, “Lots of my friends don’t like reading either. It’s no big deal.” Things went worse when she got a smartphone last year. Suddenly, my lively child became lazy, always on her phone. I suggested other fun activities, but she just found theme “boring.” I still held out hope for reading, seeing it as a developmental escape. But the problem was that she chose the colorful, noisy world of her phone. Then, right before we left for an 8-day holiday on a beautiful Greek island, we talked about reading again. “Novels are the best way to understand how people feel,” I told her. “I can learn more from social media,” she replied. I mentioned storytelling and history, and she said, “I can watch movies and use the internet.” I even promised to buy her any books she liked, but she smiled and said, “Mama, welcome to your dream.” I realized I couldn’t win. She had good reasons and I couldn’t say she was wrong. Sure, reading opens up new worlds, but so does the whole internet. Still, deep down, I wished she’d experience the pure magic of reading—those special moments when an author says exactly what you’ve always felt but never knew how to express. So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025~2026学年第一学期河源高级中学、东莞第六高级中学、 中山实验中学、惠州博罗中学联考(一) 英语试卷 说明:本试题共8页,满分120分,考试用时120分钟。 A To some, sunglasses are a fashion choice... B 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段“Researchers have long struggled to explain how fish turn up in lakes far from other bodies of water, a mystery even Charles Darwin noted in 1859, when he suggested that aquatic (水生的) hatchlings might stick to the feet of birds, though his bright idea remained a theory.(长期以来,研究人员一直在努力解释鱼类是如何出现在远离其他水体的湖泊中的,甚至查尔斯·达尔文(Charles Darwin)在1859年也注意到了这个谜,当时他提出水生幼体可能粘在鸟类的脚上,尽管他的聪明想法仍然是一个理论)”以及第三段“In 2019, Yao Akifumi, a biology student then, wondered if Darwin might have been right and further wondered if fish-hunting birds might transport egg-bearing aquatic plants stuck to their feet.(2019年,当时的一名生物学学生Yao Akifumi想知道达尔文是否正确,并进一步想知道捕食鱼类的鸟类是否会将产卵的水生植物粘在脚上)”可知,作者到达尔文的观点是为了提供研究背景。 根据第三段“After six months, some plants had switched ponds, and one camera captured a bird flying away with a plant on its foot.(六个月后,一些植物换了池塘,一台摄像机捕捉到一只鸟脚上踩着一棵植物飞走了)”可知,Yao发现了一只脚上衔着植物的鸟来支持他的假设。 根据第四段“In a paper in Science of Nature, Mr. Yao reports that the medaka eggs can successfully hatch after up to 18 hours out of the water. Eggs without a plant leaf to attach to rarely survived a few hours. The big drop in survival was at 16.3 hours, when half the eggs became lifeless.(在发表于《自然科学》期刊的一篇论文中,Mr. Yao报告称,medaka的卵在脱离水体长达18小时后仍能成功孵化。而未附着在植物叶片上的鱼卵,通常仅能存活数小时。尤为关键的是,在脱离水体16.3小时这一时间节点上,鱼卵的存活率出现大幅下降——此时,半数鱼卵已失去生命迹象)”可知,可附着得叶子提高medaka卵的存活率。故选C项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Shorter journeys, however, are certainly possible. And since many other medaka-like species are found throughout Asia, the chances are high that hitchhiking (搭便车) explains how they have ended up in lakes with seemingly no connection to other water bodies. Yet again, it would seem, Darwin’s theories turn out to be correct.(然而,更短的旅程当然是可能的。而且,由于在亚洲各地发现了许多其他类似medaka的物种,搭便车很有可能解释了它们最终如何进入看似与其他水体没有联系的湖泊。达尔文的理论似乎又一次被证明是正确的)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了鱼类搭便车传播的现象已被证实。故选C项。 D The idea that night owls who don’t go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. Critical. D 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第二段中“Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. “If you finish one novel during this trip, I’ll buy you that art set you’ve been wanting,” I proposed, pointing to the book I’d secretly packed: The Secret Garden. To my surprise, she hesitated but agreed. The Greek island, with its limited Wi-Fi, became the perfect setting. With fewer digital distractions, she reluctantly picked up the book by the pool. Gradually, the vibrant descriptions of the garden and the resilient characters drew her in. By day three, I found her reading under an olive tree, completely absorbed, her phone forgotten beside her. By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. Her eyes sparkled as she discussed Mary’s transformation and the magic of the hidden garden. “Can I get A Wrinkle in Time next?” she asked. I smiled, overwhelmed with relief. Later, she even used her phone creatively—taking photos of scenic spots that reminded her of the story and sharing her reading journey online. Watching her connect literature to her world, I realized the true reward wasn’t just the art set; it was witnessing her discover the quiet magic of words, a joy no screen could replicate. Tears welled in my eyes—she’d finally felt what I could never fully explain. 1】Her eyes sparkled as she discussed Mary’s transformation and the magic of the hidden garden.(运用了as引导时间状语从句 ) 【高分句型 2】Watching her connect literature to her world, I realized the true reward wasn’t just the art set; it was witnessing her discover the quiet magic of words, a joy no screen could replicate.(运用了现在分词 Watching 作伴随状语,以及省略 that 的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
