How do you usually sleep — barefoot or with socks on? Scientists have found that wearing socks to bed can help you fall asleep more quickly. Isn’t that amazing?
The temperature of your internal organs (内脏器官) is called your core (核心) body temperature. During the day, your core body temperature stays around 37 degrees. Over the course of seven or eight hours of sleep, it drops by as much as 1.2 degrees. How does this happen? Well, when your brain decides that your internal organs should cool down, it will widen (扩张) your blood vessels (血管). The warmer blood from your body’s core will then go to the other parts of your body. In this way, your core body temperature gradually drops.
This is important for falling asleep. In fact, the faster your body’s core cools down, the faster you will get to sleep. According to scientists, wearing socks can help widen your blood vessels. And this lowers your core body temperature and helps you fall asleep more quickly.
If you have trouble getting to sleep, why not give it a try? Take a warm foot bath before bed and put on your socks. You’ll probably fall asleep fifteen minutes faster than usual!

Wild cheetahs used to live all over the grasslands in Africa and the Middle East. A century ago, there were over 100,000 cheetahs in the wild. Today that number has dropped to about 7,000. Their living place is becoming smaller and smaller. Less wilderness means less space to hunt. It also brings cheetahs closer to lions, who hunt cheetah cubs (幼崽). And cheetahs are sometimes killed by hunters or farmers who try to protect their cows and pigs.
San Diego and other zoos have started programs to make sure cheetahs won’t die out. They also study cheetah behaviour and support programs to protect cheetahs in the wild.
Most zoo cheetahs were born in zoos. In the wild, cheetah moms usually have 3 to 5 cubs at a time. The cubs grow up together and play together.
But sometimes zoos will get a cheetah cub with no brothers or sisters. If so, they will try to find another cheetah family for it. If they can’t, zoos will find a dog for the lonely cub.
Finding a dog for the single cheetah seems to help. Those little dogs are energetic and like to play and discover, just like cheetah cubs. So they can make good friends.
What does it take to become a cheetah’s partner? The dog must be the right age, and about the same size as a cheetah cub when both are young. The dog also needs a calm, confident, and friendly personality.
At first, zoos thought that cheetahs and dogs would stay together for life. Now, they are learning that as cheetahs grow up, they spend more time alone. When cheetahs grow up, they remain friendly with the dogs, but they don’t need to stay with dogs as long as they used to.
As adults, some cheetahs have a special job at the zoo. They might take part in programs to educate the public about cheetahs. Most people will never get to see a cheetah in the wild. But zoo cheetahs can help visitors learn about the speed and beauty of their wild kin (亲属) in some ways.
Sometimes the dog comes along. When there are a lot of visitors, having a friend nearby can help the cheetah feel more confident.
1. What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A. The history of cheetahs. B. The problems cheetahs face.
C. The writer’s pity on cheetahs. D. The zoo’s protection for cheetahs.
2. What mainly helps a dog to make good friends with a cheetah cub?
A. Its habit and age. B. Its habit and size.
C. Its habit and personality. D. Its size and age.
3. What does “they” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A. Zoos. B. Dogs. C. Cheetahs. D. The public.
4. What’s the main reason for zoos to keep cheetahs?
A. To find dogs as their friends. B. To educate the public about cheetahs.
C. To keep them away from lions. D. To make sure they still live on the earth.

In China, the year 2024 is famous as long nian. For a long time, it has been called the Year of Dragon in English. But actually, there are a lot of differences between the Chinese long and the Western dragon.
The Chinese long is made up of parts of some kind animals, such as a rabbit’s eyes and an ox’s ears. In Chinese mythology (神话), long is able to fly. Besides, it can also spray (喷洒) water from its mouth to create rain.
However, in Western culture, a dragon breathes fire and has the body of a snake and big wings of a bat. What’s more, you will find most of the Western dragons in dark colors because they usually mean evil. As a result, normally at the end of the stories, the superheroes will eat the evil dragon.
What makes such differences? Maybe because of the cultural differences. In Chinese Confucian (儒家的) ideas, kindness and harmony (和谐) are very important. Western culture, on the other hand, prefers individual heroism (个人英雄主义). Whenever something terrible happens, there will be a brave superhero standing out and saving the whole world.
In recent years, Chinese have tried to spell long in a new way. For example, Zhejiang’s Long Air has already written long as Loong because Loong sounds the same as the Chinese character long. Besides, the letters “oo” in the word Loong look like the two big eyes of the animal, which makes it easier to memorize this word.
Anyway, there is one thing for sure: the Chinese long is different from the Western dragon, and it is a symbol of good luck.
1. Which of the following is the picture of a Western dragon?
A. B. C. D.
2. According to the Chinese Confucian ideas, what might be the reason for long to spray water?
A. To fight against the evil dragon. B. To help the farmers in the dry weather.
C. To show its power and ability. D. To make itself the superhero in this world.
3. What does the underlined word “evil” in Para 3 mean in English?
A. Good things. B. Bad things. C. Meaningful things. D. Meaningless things.
4. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. A Chinese dragon breathes fire and has the body of a snake.
B. 2024 is the year of long in the traditional Western lunar calendar.
C. The Western dragon is a symbol of good luck.
D. The pronunciation and spelling make Loong easier to remember.
5. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Chinese long is better.
B. Western dragon is better.
C. The differences between Chinese long and Western dragon.
D. The similarities between Chinese long and Western dragon.

China now has more than 30,000 kilometers of high speed rail, and this is expected to increase to 38,000 kilometers by 2025. Fully two thirds of the world’s high speed rail (by length) is in China. Here, we are going to find out the exciting technological developments in high speed rail and consider their cultural influence.
While the main advantage of the high speed rail lines is convenient for people to go from one city to another as quickly as possible, some of these high speed lines have become popular tourist attractions (places that many tourists visit). A good example of this is the Hefei-Fuzhou high speed line. The amazing views are wonderful, as the train goes through some of China’s most beautiful mountainous areas, including the Huangshan and the Wuyi Mountain Ranges.
As China has got skills and knowledge in high speed rail, it is trying to extend its technology to other countries. Its first project on the international market was the line connecting Istanbul (伊斯坦布尔,土耳其城市名) with Turkey’s capital, Ankara (安卡拉,土耳其首都), 530 kilometers away. This was followed by projects among other countries. Perhaps its most challenging project is a Trans Asian network (横贯亚洲铁路网) connecting China with Europe. Although it is difficult, China will make every effort to take on this plan. It is hoped to be completed by 2030 as a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路的倡议).
Thanks to high speed rail, the travel time between main cities in China has already been reduced to only a few hours. So this convenience should improve the development within and out of China. No doubt, it will also bring people closer together, and bring about deep social changes.
1. How many kilometers of high speed track is China expected to increase by 2025?
A. 38,000. B. Over 30,000. C. 45,000. D. Over 57,000.
2. Why does the writer talk about the Hefei-Fuzhou line in Paragraph 2?
A. To prove how fast the high speed lines can be.
B. To stress how convenient the high speed lines are.
C. To show the technical development of the high speed lines.
D. To explain high speed lines can be popular tourist attractions.
3. What does the underlined word “extend” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. sell. B. spread. C. hide. D. return.
4. What is the most challenging project that China plans to take on?
A. Inventing faster trains. B. Connecting China with Europe.
C. Designing and building its own trains. D. Connecting the whole country in 2030.
5. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Rising China in the World B. Great Changes in China
C. Racing to the Future D. High Speed Rail in the World

Do you find it hard to keep your promise of not overspending?
It all started with a promise not to overspend. And for the first couple of days, I managed to keep it. But then... oops! On the fourth day, I took out my credit card (信用卡) and did it again!
Do you have such experience? If you are too young to spend freely, think about your favorite snack. We often know what we should do, but why do we keep doing the opposite?
Many people turn to experts for advice. They tell you to keep away from social media and friends who overspend to control the stimulus (刺激). Then, the experts suggest you control your spending: Cut up your credit cards.
Such advice helps at first, but soon it stops working. Let’s face it: You can’t avoid every advertisement pushing you to buy something.
Here’s a secret that has helped me break my terrible spending cycle. There is a space between the stimulus and answer to it. And our choice lies in the space.

When I see an interesting book, I put it on a list. If I still want it 72 hours later, I’ll go ahead and buy it.
How you create this little “spending space” depends on you, but I think you can give the “72-hour rule” a try.
