Salads are much liked and are served all year round. Many Americans are trying to keep down their weight. This is shown in menus offering “low calorie (卡路里)” or “weight watchers” meals. In markets, one can find “No Cal” drinks (meaning without calories) such as cola. Many Americans drink coffee or tea with their meal. If a waiter in an American restaurant asks “Now or later?”, what he means is “Do you want coffee with your meal or later?” When eating out in the USA, we can ask for tea, milk, beer, and so on, if we prefer these to coffee. American restaurants cannot serve beer, wine, or liquor unless they are licensed to do so. The main dish in American meals is usually meat, chicken or fish, but more than one of these is hardly served at the same meal. Most Americans eat quickly during the day — that is, breakfast and lunch — unless it is a social, business, or family situation. The evening meal, however, is usually a family time. Racing through daytime meals is part of the “American pace” of life, for working hours are considered important. The nationwide fast-food restaurants are suitable for the ways of American eating. The standard (标准的) products, of nearly the same price, are served quickly, and taste the same whether bought in New York City or in Los Angeles. McDonald’s is a popular restaurant. It offers many choices of hamburgers, French fries and “cokes”. These foods are rich in fats, sugar and salt. Often, they are the major meal of the day of many young working people. 36. “Weight watchers” most probably means __________ in Chinese. A. 减肥者 B. 观察者 C. 称重者 D. 参与者 37. On the steps of the building, a group of engineering students were waiting for the last exam. On their faces was confidence. They knew the exam would be easy. The professor (a teacher at a college) had said they could bring any books and notes during the test. Right after they came into the classroom, the professor handed out the papers. There are only five questions on it. Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was nervous expression. The professor watched the worried faces before him, and asked, “How many of you have completed all five questions?” No hand was raised. “How many of you have answered four?” Still no hands. “Three? Two?” The students moved restlessly in their seats. “One, then?” Certainly someone has finished one. But the class kept silent. The professor said, “That is exactly I expected. I just want to make you know clearly that even though you have completed four years of engineering. There are still many things about the subject you don’t know. These questions you could not answer are common in everyday practice.” Then, smiling, he added, “You will all pass this course, your education has just begun.” The years have obscured the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught. 41. The good news is that this year will be longer than the previous! Although don’t get excited just yet, because if you blink (眨眼), you may just miss it. That’s because 2015 will be one second longer than 2014 -also known as a leap second (闰秒). And surprisingly, they are pretty common. But why do we need them? Over the centuries, Earth has been slowing down. This means that we must keep changing our clocks to keep in step with Earth’s time. We’ve all heard of leap years. Our calendars hold 365 days in a year. Yet Earth takes slightly longer to orbit the sun. So we save this time and every 4 years we have an extra day in February. As for the leap seconds, the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) manages the global time, known as the atomic time(原子钟时间). This is the timekeeping that’s used for every single country. To keep up with Earth’s time, they add a second every now and then. They’ve been doing this since 1972. And this year will be the 26th second they’ve added! It’ll be added just before 8:00 a.m. on July 1 Beijing time. So you will see 7:59:60 on July 1. Although adding a second sounds harmless, it can have negative effects. In 2012 when a leap second was added, it caused problems for companies like social networking sites Reddit and LinkedIn. As they weren’t prepared for the change, it caused their computers to record errors. 45. Why does a leap second have to be added in some years? A. Because this year is shorter than the previous one. B. Because we need to have more time. C. Because the Earth is slowing down. D. Because it can help make a leap year. 46. In a leap year, there is an extra day in_____. A. January B. February C. March D. December 47. In order to keep up with Earth’s time, how many seconds have been added until last year? A. 43 B. 42 C. 26 D. 25 48. What’s the negative effect of adding a leap second? A. It makes the day longer than the previous one. B. It causes some recording errors for companies. C. It makes people stay up late. D. It does harm to people’s health. 【答案】45. C 46. B 47. D 48. However, today, Chinese people may be leading the world in mobile payment, mainly WeChat Pay and Alipay. Foreigners feel amazed when Chinese people buy everything with their phones. At least, this was the case for Lim Swee Say, Manpower Minister of Singapore. When Lim was waiting in line to buy some snacks at a street stall(货摊)in Shanghai, he saw other customers show their phones and take the food without giving over any cash. Soon after, he realized that the customers were using mobile payment. "Singapore is actually backward(落后)" , said Lim The popularity of mobile payment in China has pushed many foreign countries and agencies to accept them. And several reasons might make this mobile payment spread in the whole world. ● Quite a few Western mobile payment services require businessmen to install(安装)expensive machines before customers can use them. While using Chinese mobile payment, all it takes is a QR code(二维码)and a smart phone. ● Nowadays, almost everyone has a smart phone, even teenagers. And the mobile payment has helped people save the trouble of taking wallets with them. Our lives are full of them, from the small ones to the life-changing. The right to choose is central to everyone. Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy or full of regret. Can science help? Most of us know little about the mental processes that lie behind our decisions. Luckily, what psychologists (心理学家) are finding may help us all make better choices. Here are some of their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind. Consider your emotions. You might think that emotions are the enemy of decision making, but in fact they are a part of it. Whenever you make up your mind, your brain’s emotional centre is active. University of Southern California scientist, Antonio Damasia, has studied people with damage to only the emotional parts of their brains , and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what to wear or eat. Damasia thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past choice, which we use to help the present decision-making. However, making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result. Take anger, for example. A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than considering other choices. It seems that anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much thinking. All emotions affect our thinking and motivation (动机), so it may be best to avoid making important decisions under their influence. Yet strangely there is one emotion that seems to help us make good choices. The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the various choices on offer, and ended up making the best choices. In fact many studies show that people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world. 54. According to the text, what may help us make better decisions? A. To think about happy times. B. Ⅳ.阅读理解 A Generally speaking, American food is not very thick in taste. A. 减肥者 B. 观察者 C. 称重者 D. 参与者 37 In American restaurants which of the following is NOT true? A. Many American people like salads. B. Coffee can be served after a meal. C. One can order tea if he doesn’t like coffee. D. All restaurants can sell beer and wine. 38. At the same meal, American people usually __________. A. have meat, chicken and fish together B. have either meat or chicken or fish C. drink a lot of beer, wine or liquor D. sit down together around a table 39. In American restaurants, the standard foods __________. A. have different prices B. taste different from place to place C. are very expensive D. can be served quickly 40. This passage mainly talks about __________. A. American restaurants and people B. American eating culture C. American working situation D. American food and price B It was the last day of the final examination in a college. 41. Why did the students think the exam was easy at first? A. Because it was their last exam in the college. B. Because they knew there were only five questions. C. Because they thought they were clever and talented. D. Because they were allowed to bring any books and notes during the test. 42. What does the underlined word “obscured” mean in the last paragraph? A. Make something not clear. B. Make somebody think of something. C. Remind somebody of something. D. Make something change. 43. What could the students learn from the last exam? A. He laughs best who laughs last. B. A good beginning is half done. C. One is never too old to learn. D. The early bird catches the worm (虫子). 44. What’s the best title for the article? A. Some Confident Students B. A Difficult Exam. C. An Interesting Professor D. An Unforgettable Lesson C Sometimes we wish that we could have more time. D While Westerners were getting used to paying with credit cards(信用卡)or bank cards at the very beginning of the 21st century, most Chinese people still liked to pay in cash (paper money) out of habit. However, today, Chinese people may be leading the world in mobile payment, mainly WeChat Pay and Alipay. Foreigners feel amazed when Chinese people buy everything with their phones. At least this was the case for Lim Swee Say, Manpower Minister of Singapore. It's not only safer, more convenient, but also environmentally friendly. ● Most shops in China, from a tiny shop in villages to a huge shopping center in big cities, all offer the service of mobile payment. And by the end of last year, Hangzhou Public Transportation System installed the mobile payment machine on 8,000 downtown buses. ● With Chinese travelers throughout the world, it's now common to see the familiar green or blue QR codes in tourist sights around the world. 49.
