B Growing up, I was one of those energetic kids who never sat still. I was always doing cartwheels, flips, and generally bouncing off the walls whenever I got the chance. At the age of 4, I started in gymnastics and used that as an outlet for my endless energy for several years. I participated in gymnastics until the age of 10, when I had a conversation with my parents that changed the direction of my life forever. When talking about my early gymnastics career, I failed to mention that I was born with fibular hemimelia (腓侧半肢畸形) — meaning I didn’t have fibulas, ankles, heels, and most of the other bones in my feet. At 18 months old, both of my lower legs were cut off, so I could be fitted with prosthetic (假体的) legs and learn to walk. Then, as a 10-year-old, my parents sat me down to tell me that at some point I would have to wear prosthetics during gymnastics because I would damage my knees from all of the force I was subjecting them to. I tried gymnastics with my prosthetics and it just didn’t feel right. At that point, I knew my future wasn’t in gymnastics. But I always felt like I was a mermaid (美人鱼) or a fish when I got into the water, so after moving on from the beam (平衡木) to the pool, I started doing competitive swimming. Through years of hard training, however, I went from the little girl who wasn’t comfortable doing gymnastics with my prosthetics to a 17-time Paralympic medalist with my eyes squarely set on the next Paralympic Games. I’m often asked by media or people I come across what advice I have for kids with disabilities or kids that might be going through issues in school. My answer is that it’s important to always be confident, find something you’re really passionate about — whether it’s reading, music, cooking, or sports, and really go for it. 4 What was the author’s initial passion? A. Music. B. Gymnastics. C. Cooking. D. Swimming. 5. Why did the author start to work on swimming? A. It was her dream to become a swimmer. B. Her parents stopped her from doing gymnastics. C. She wanted to participate in Paralympic Games. D. Gymnastics with prosthetics made her uncomfortable. 6. Which words can best describe the author? A. Talented and generous. B. Friendly and humorous. C. Energetic and confident. D. Brilliant and warm-hearted. 7. What may be the best title for the text? A. A Disabled Girl’s Sad Story B. To Win Paralympic Medals C. From the Beam to the Pool D. My Great Sports Achievements C Saltwater recreational fishing is part of Florida’s tourist economy. Anglers (垂钓者) take 40 million saltwater fishing trips each year in Florida in hopes of hooking a snapper and hogfish. But strict fishing regulations mean that most of the caught fish are safely returned to the water. On Biscayne Bay, Captain Wayne Conn’s 75-foot boat carried twenty anglers. It was not long before one fisherman made a catch. It was a mutton snapper, but it was just 17 inches long. It had to go back in the water. But it couldn’t be just thrown back in. Marine fisheries specialist Angela Collins said, “When reef fish living in deep water are brought to the surface, the gases in their bodies expand, sometimes greatly. They can experience a condition known as barotrauma. That’s when you see the fish’s eyes bulging (鼓胀) out of its head or its stomach popping out of its mouth. That gas expands and has to go somewhere, maybe detrimental to the fish.” Anglers must have special equipment on board to ensure reef fish survive once they’re returned to the water. That includes long needles to pierce the fish’s swim bladder in its body, releasing the pressure. But it’s also important to get the fish back down to its habitat on the bottom, 100 feet or more below the surface. Collins attached a weight to the fish’s lower lip before lowering it slowly back into the water. “This just shoots him down fast,” she said. “It’s closed until this gets to 100 feet. It pops open, letting the fish swim off.” The ship moved to a different spot in deeper water and someone soon got a hit. Collins gave a shout. “Check it out, that fish is special,” he said. It was a 7-or 8-pound mutton snapper. That was a great eating fish. But Lauren Hayes from the University of Miami decided to release it. “I love animals. Fishing is what it is, and the moments waiting for a fish to bite feel more real than having it in the net,” she said. 8. Why was the 17-inch-long fish thrown back? A. It was a special fish. B. It was under the limit. C. Its body expanded greatly. D. Its condition was terrible. 9. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Harmful. B. Unique. C. Familiar. D. Essential. 10. What is the special equipment used for? A. Protecting the fish’s habitat. B. Making reef fish living well. C. Monitoring the fish’s population. D. Ensuring the released fish’s safety. 11. Which statement may Lauren Hayes agree with? A. Big fish should be kept for eating. B. Strict regulations make fishing less fun. C. The main purpose of fishing is to catch fish. D. The meaning of fishing lies in the experience. D Northwestern University chemists have developed a novel method to break down plastic waste by using moisture (水分) from air, offering a sustainable solution to the global plastic crisis. This non-toxic and solvent-free process starts with an inexpensive catalyst (催化剂) that breaks the chemical bonds in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) — the most common plastic in the polyester family, widely used in food packaging and drinking bottles. After the bonds are broken, researchers simply expose the broken plastic to surrounding air; the moisture in the air then converts these pieces into monomers (单体), the essential building blocks of plastics. These monomers can be recycled into new PET products or even transformed into more valuable materials, paving the way for a circular plastic economy. Published in the journal Green Chemistry, this technique is cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable than existing recycling methods. Naveen Malik, the study’s first author. emphasized that their approach addresses one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Unlike traditional recycling methods, this method is both environmentally friendly and highly practical for real-world use. PET plastics account for 12% of global plastic usage and are a major source of pollution due to their resistance to degradation. They often end up in landfills or break down into microplastics that pollute waterways. Building on their previous work developing solvent-free catalytic processes, the team used inexpensive, abundant, and non-toxic molybdenum (钼) catalyst and activated carbon. Heating PET with these materials breaks its chemical bonds; exposing the result to air then uses atmospheric moisture to produce terephthalic acid (TPA). The process is fast and efficient: 94% of TPA is recovered in just four hours. The catalyst is durable and recyclable, maintaining effectiveness through repeated use. Tests on real-world materials like plastic bottles, shirts, and mixed plastic waste confirmed its effectiveness, even breaking down colored plastics into pure, colorless TPA. As Malik noted, this innovation is a practical step toward a bright prospect, showing how chemistry can align with nature to solve global challenges. 12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. How the method works. B. Why the method is efficient. C. How plastic waste is recycled. D. Why plastic needs developing. 13 What features does this method have? A. Widespread and practical. B. Inexpensive and eco-friendly. C. Complex and uncontrollable. D. Energy-consuming and costly. 14. What is the function of paragraph 4? A. To give similar examples. B. To explain more reasons. C. To introduce detailed definition. D. To provide further clarification. 15. What can we know about the method’s future? A. It’s uncertain. B. It’s ordinary. C. It’s promising. D. It’s challenging. How to Offer Constructive and Effective Advice Giving advice can be a delicate task.____16____. Here are some tips to help you give advice in a way that is both constructive and well-received. Listen actively ____17____. Active listening involves giving your full attention to the person speaking, acknowledging their feelings, and asking clarifying questions. Show empathy by putting yourself in their shoes and acknowledging their emotions. For example, you might say, “I can see how disappointing this must be for you.” This approach helps build trust and shows that you care about their perspective. ____18____ Sometimes, people just need someone to listen to their problems, and they may not be looking for advice. Before jumping in with your suggestions, ask if they would like to hear your thoughts. You might say, “Would you like some advice on this, or do you just need someone to talk to?” This gives them control over the conversation and makes them more receptive to your input. Be sensitive to timing and context The timing and setting of your conversation can greatly affect how your advice is received. Choose a quiet, private place where you won’t be interrupted, and ensure that the person is in a receptive state of mind. Avoid giving advice in the heat of the moment.____19____ Be specific and practical ____20____. You should offer specific suggestions that the person can easily implement. For example, instead of saying “You need to be more organized”, suggest “You might try using a planner to keep track of your tasks and deadlines.” Practical advice is more likely to be useful and can help the person feel empowered to take action. A. Ask permission to offer advice B. Discuss the solution with the person concerned C. Imprecise advice can be discouraging and unhelpful D. The way the strings vibrated under the fingers, producing beautiful melodies, seemed almost magical to him. He had seen his older brother play, and the joy on his brother’s face whenever he played a chord (和弦) had inspired Jack to give it a try himself. Jack dreamed of one day being able to play his favorite songs and maybe even write his own music. So, with a mix of excitement and nervousness, Jack bought his first guitar and began his journey into the world of music. The first few days were difficult. Jack’s fingers hurt from pressing down on the strings, and his attempts to play even the simplest chords often resulted in some unpleasant sounds. He spent hours trying to get the right finger placement, but it seemed like no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t get it right. His fingertips were sore and red, and his hands felt clumsy (笨拙的). Frustration began to set in. He started to doubt whether he had any talent for playing the guitar at all. There were times when he felt like giving up, thinking that maybe it was just too difficult for him. One evening, after another particularly discouraging practice session, Jack sat on his bed, staring at the guitar leaning against the wall. He felt defeated and discouraged. His older brother, noticing his depressed mood, came over and sat beside him. He asked Jack what was wrong, and Jack sighed, telling him about his struggles with the guitar. His brother listened patiently and then said, “Jack, I know it’s hard, but you’ve only been at it for a few weeks. It takes time and practice. You can’t expect to be perfect right away. Remember why you started in the first place. It’s supposed to be fun! I went through the same thing when I first started, and look at me now. You just need to keep going.” What Jack’s older brother said touched him deeply. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Months passed, and Jack’s persistence (坚持) began to pay off. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高三上学期开学考 英语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? 4. What was the author’s initial passion? A. Music. B. Gymnastics. C. Cooking. D. Swimming. My Great Sports Achievements 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“At the age of 4, I started in gymnastics and used that as an outlet for my endless energy for several years. (4岁时,我开始练习体操,并在接下来的几年里把它作为我无尽精力的发泄途径)”可知,作者最初的热情是体操。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“I tried gymnastics with my prosthetics and it just didn’t feel right. (我试着用假肢做体操,但感觉就是不对劲)”以及第四段“At that point, I knew my future wasn’t in gymnastics. But I always felt like I was a mermaid (美人鱼) or a fish when I got into the water, so after moving on from the beam (平衡木) to the pool, I started doing competitive swimming. (那时,我知道我的未来不在体操上。但当我下水时,我总是觉得自己像一条美人鱼或一条鱼,所以从平衡木转到游泳池后,我开始进行竞技游泳)”可知,作者开始游泳是因为用假肢做体操让她感到不舒服。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Growing up, I was one of those energetic kids who never sat still. (我从小就是那种精力充沛、从不安静坐着的孩子之一)”以及最后一段“My answer is that it’s important to always be confident, find something you’re really passionate about — whether it’s reading, music, cooking, or sports, and really go for it. (我的回答是,重要的是要始终保持自信,找到你真正热爱的事情——无论是阅读、音乐、烹饪还是运动,然后全力以赴)”可知,作者是一个精力充沛且自信的人。故选C。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段“At that point, I knew my future wasn’t in gymnastics. But I always felt like I was a mermaid (美人鱼) or a fish when I got into the water, so after moving on from the beam (平衡木) to the pool, I started doing competitive swimming. (那时,我知道我的未来不在体操上。但当我下水时,我总是觉得自己像一条美人鱼或一条鱼,所以从平衡木转到游泳池后,我开始进行竞技游泳)”以及文章内容可知,文章主要讲述了作者从体操转向游泳的经历,以及她如何通过努力训练成为残奥会奖牌得主的故事,所以“从平衡木到游泳池”最能概括文章的主题,适合作为文章标题。故选C。 C Saltwater recreational fishing is part of Florida’s tourist economy. A It was a special fish. B 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第二段“It was a mutton snapper, but it was just 17 inches long. It had to go back in the water. (那是一条羊鲷,但只有17英寸长。它必须回到水里)”可知,这条鱼被扔回水中是因为它没有达到捕捞的尺寸标准,即它小于规定的尺寸限制。故选B。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“When reef fish living in deep water are brought to the surface, the gases in their bodies expand, sometimes greatly. They can experience a condition known as barotrauma. That’s when you see the fish’s eyes bulging (鼓胀) out of its head or its stomach popping out of its mouth. That gas expands and has to go somewhere, maybe detrimental to the fish. (当生活在深水中的暗礁鱼被带到水面时,它们体内的气体会膨胀,有时会膨胀得很大。它们会经历一种被称为气压损伤的情况。这时你会看到鱼的眼睛从头部鼓胀出来,或者胃从嘴里弹出来。气体膨胀,必须有个去处,也许对鱼detrimental)”可知,气体膨胀会使得鱼类经历气压损伤,对鱼的身体是有害的,推测划线单词detrimental的意思是“有害的”,与Harmful意义相近。故选A。 根据第四段“Anglers must have special equipment on board to ensure reef fish survive once they’re returned to the water. (垂钓者必须在船上配备特殊设备,以确保珊瑚礁鱼在放回水中后能够存活)”可知,特殊设备的作用是确保放生的鱼能够安全存活。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“But Lauren Hayes from the University of Miami decided to release it. “I love animals. Fishing is what it is, and the moments waiting for a fish to bite feel more real than having it in the net,” she said. (但迈阿密大学的劳伦·海耶斯决定释放它。“我爱动物。钓鱼就是这样,等待鱼上钩的时刻比鱼在网里的感觉更真实,”她说)”可知,劳伦·海耶斯认为钓鱼的真正意义在于体验等待鱼上钩的过程,而不是仅仅为了捕获鱼,因此,她可能会同意“钓鱼的意义在于体验”这一说法。故选D。 D Northwestern University chemists have developed a novel method to break down plastic waste by using moisture (水分) from air, offering a sustainable solution to the global plastic crisis. 13. What features does this method have? A. Widespread and practical. B. Inexpensive and eco-friendly. C. Complex and uncontrollable. D. Energy-consuming and costly. 14. What is the function of paragraph 4? A. To give similar examples. B. To explain more reasons. C. To introduce detailed definition. D. To provide further clarification. 15. What can we know about the method’s future? A. It’s uncertain. B. It’s ordinary. C. It’s promising. D. It’s challenging. 12. A 13. B 14. D 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: What Jack’s older brother said touched him deeply. He realized that he had let his frustration overshadow his love for music. He decided to give it another try, but this time with a different approach. Instead of trying to master everything at once, he broke down his practice into smaller, more manageable goals. He focused on one chord at a time, practicing it until he could play it smoothly before moving on to the next. He also started to listen to more music, paying attention to how different chords flowed together in songs. Months passed, and Jack’s persistence (坚持) began to pay off. His fingers grew stronger and moved quickly. The once awkward movements became fluid, and he could finally play a lot of chords continuously without hesitation. He felt a wave of pride and accomplishment. All the hours of practice, the frustration, and the moments of doubt had led to this moment. He had not only learned to play the guitar but had also discovered something about himself: With determination, he could overcome challenges that once seemed impossible. 意识到:realize/be aware of ②.掌握:master/control ③.专心于:focus on/concentrate on 情绪类 ①.爱:love/affection ②.沮丧:frustration/disappointment 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
