教学过程
1. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show some pictures of famous people like scientists, athletes, and artists on the PPT. Ask students: "Do you know these people? Can you briefly introduce one of them?"
Then ask: "Who is your role model? Why do you choose him/her?" Encourage several students to share their ideas. This activity aims to arouse students' interest and activate their prior knowledge related to role models, preparing them for the following writing task.
2. Pre - writing (10 minutes)
Brainstorming
Divide students into groups of four. Let them discuss in groups: "What qualities should a good role model have? What achievements has your role model got?" Each group writes down their ideas on a piece of paper.
After 3 minutes, invite some groups to share their ideas with the whole class. The teacher writes the main points on the blackboard, such as "intelligence", "bravery", "winning the Nobel Prize", "breaking world records", etc.
Analyzing a model essay
Hand out a model essay about a role model to each student. Ask them to read it quickly and answer the following questions:
What is the main idea of the essay?
How is the essay organized? (Introduction, body, conclusion)
Underline the useful vocabulary and sentence structures.
After students finish reading, check the answers together. Explain the organization of the essay: the introduction part usually introduces who the role model is; the body part details the qualities and achievements of the role model; the conclusion part states why the writer admires the role model and what he/she has learned from the role model. Analyze some key vocabulary and sentence structures in the model essay, and let students take notes.
3. While - writing (15 minutes)
Outlining
Guide students to make an outline for their own writing based on the model essay. The outline should include an introduction (introducing the role model), two or three body paragraphs (each paragraph focusing on one quality or achievement), and a conclusion. Give them 3 minutes to complete the outline.
Drafting
After finishing the outline, students start to write their first draft. Remind them to use the vocabulary and sentence structures they have learned, and to write as clearly and vividly as possible. Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance when students encounter problems.
4. Post - writing (10 minutes)
Peer - review
Pair up the students. Let them exchange their drafts and review each other's writing according to the following criteria:
Is the content relevant to the topic?
Are there any grammar or spelling mistakes?
Are the vocabulary and sentence structures used properly?
Is the essay well - organized?
Each student writes down their suggestions on their partner's paper. After 5 minutes, ask students to return the papers to their owners.
Revision and editing
Students revise and edit their own writing based on their partner's suggestions. They can correct grammar and spelling mistakes, improve the vocabulary and sentence structures, and make the organization of the essay better. The teacher can select some common problems found in students' writing and give a brief reminder to the whole class.
5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this writing class, including the process of writing about role models, important vocabulary, and sentence structures. Emphasize the importance of learning from role models.
Homework
Ask students to rewrite their composition neatly on a new piece of paper and hand it in next class. They should make sure that their final composition is error - free and well - written.
Encourage students to read more articles about role models to further enrich their vocabulary and writing ideas.
教学反思
After this writing class, overall, most students showed great enthusiasm in the lead - in and brainstorming activities, which indicates that the topic of role models is quite appealing to them. The pre - writing guidance, such as analyzing the model essay and making an outline, effectively helped students clarify their writing ideas. However, during the while - writing process, some students still had difficulty in using appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to express their ideas precisely. This may be due to insufficient practice and weak language foundation. In the future, more vocabulary - building activities and sentence - writing exercises should be designed.
In the peer - review stage, students actively participated, but some of their comments were rather general and lacked in - depth analysis. Teachers need to provide more specific guidance on how to conduct peer - review, for example, by giving more detailed review criteria and sample comments. Also, in terms of time management, the while - writing part might be a bit rushed for some students. Next time, more time could be allocated to the actual writing process to ensure that students have enough time to express their thoughts fully. Overall, continuous improvement in teaching methods and more targeted guidance are needed to better meet the writing needs of students.
