Start Out Small
Hello, everyone!
We should try our best to make our hometown more beautiful and comfortable. What can we do for our hometown?
First, we can plant more trees, grass and flowers to make the air fresher. We can’t cut down too many trees. It’s bad for our environment. Second, if we go shopping, we can reuse bags. Third, in order to keep the environment clean, we shouldn’t throw rubbish everywhere. We’re supposed to keep the river clean too. Fourth, when we go out, we should ride a bike or travel on a bus to reduce pollution.
If we do the small things from now on, our hometown will be more beautiful and comfortable. Let’s try our best to make it together.

三、短文填空(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分)
Once, I saw a picture in a book which I will never forget.
The picture showed a brother and a sister who were collecting rubbish on the side of a rubbish bin on the road. The sister said, “Brother, you think 26 a way to ask people to throw garbage into the dustbin.” The younger brother took out a piece of paper 27 a pen and wrote: Civilization is only one step away! One small step forward!
After 28 (see) this picture, I was 29 (astonish)! When I go out to drop rubbish, I often see some rubbish out of the dustbin. If someone throws the garbage outside the dustbin, the garbage will be 30 (blow) everywhere and the cleaner will have to pick it up with his or her hand. Civilization is only one step away, but why can’t some people take another small step forward?
Everyone can do something for our environment.
Try to save electricity in 31 (day) life. For example, if you are the last person to leave the classroom in the evening, remember to go one small step forward to turn 32 the lights. Try to turn over the paper to u 33 the other side whenever it is possible. Try not to use paper cups or disposable chopsticks because it is seen as a 34 of limited resources. I believe that 35 (do) all these small things will improve our environment and help to make our world a better place to live in.
Although we have managed to protect the environment to a certain extent, there is still a very long way to go.
Remember: Civilization is only one step away! One small step forward!
四、阅读理解。(本大题共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)

Missing plastic
New rule about banning plastic causes heated discussions in Hong Kong
香港“限塑令”惹争议
When drinking with a paper straw (吸管), “you’d better finish it as soon as possible,” said Jin Lin, 25, who works and lives in Hong Kong, “or it might become soft quickly”.
This way of thinking has become common after plastic straws were banned (禁止) in Hong Kong because of the New Regulation on Disposable Plastic Products (管制即弃塑胶新法例). The ban covers many throwaway plastics like cotton buds (棉签), forks and plates. It started on April 22, which was also Earth Day.
But the new rule has caused some problems. On social media (社交媒体), people in Hong Kong have posted pictures of spoons that get soft before they finish their soup. When people went shopping, “plastic covers for umbrellas were given out when they walked into a mall on rainy days before. But now they aren’t available,” said Jin. This can cause rainwater to drip (滴落) from umbrellas, making the mall floors slippery (滑的) and increasing the chance of people slipping and falling.
“I think the new rule will affect (影响) tourists more because hotels in Hong Kong don’t give out free disposable (一次性的) plastic products anymore u,” said Zhou Yue, a 25-year-old who lives in Hong Kong. Travelers need to bring their own toothbrushes and even toothpaste (牙膏).
“To protect the environment and public health, we need to gradually lower the use of plastics,” said the Environment and Ecology Bureau of Hong Kong, explaining the reason for the ban.
The implementation (实施) of this policy will of course have some growing pains, Ng Mee Kam from the Chinese University of Hong Kong told the BBC. To help, the government has set the first six months after the rollout of the ban as an “adaptation period (适应期)”, during which the government will not enforce (执行) the new regulation. Choose the answer:

A.People should shorten their drinking time. B.Restaurants won’t offer straws anymore.

38.The government may agree that ________.

Water is a truly remarkable substance that is fundamental (基本的,根本的) to life on Earth. It exists in various forms and plays multiple essential roles in different aspects of our world.
One of the most obvious yet crucial (关键的) aspects is its role in sustaining life. Every living organism, from the tiniest microbe to the largest mammal, needs water to survive. In humans, water makes up a significant portion of our body mass. It is involved in countless biological processes such as digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation. Without an adequate supply of water, our bodies would quickly start to malfunction.
In the natural world, water shapes landscapes in astonishing ways. Glaciers, which are huge masses of ice (solid water), have carved out deep valleys and fjords over thousands of years. Rivers are like the life-giving arteries of the land, providing habitats for a diverse range of plants and animals. They also transport nutrients and sediments, enriching the soil in floodplains (洪泛区) and supporting fertile (肥沃的) agricultural areas.
Water is also of great importance in human activities. In agriculture, it is used for irrigation to grow crops that feed the global population. Without proper watering, food production would be severely limited. In industry, water serves as a coolant, a solvent (溶剂), and a medium for many manufacturing processes.
Moreover, water has a profound cultural and recreational (娱乐的) significance. Many of the world’s most famous landmarks, like the Venice canals in Italy, are centered around water. Water-based activities such as swimming, surfing, and boating are popular forms of recreation, bringing joy and relaxation to millions of people.
However, as our population grows and our demands on water increase, we face the challenge of ensuring a sustainable supply of this precious resource. This requires careful management and conservation efforts.
46.What percentage of the human body is made up of water according to the passage?
A.It doesn’t specify a percentage. B.20%.
C.50%. D.80%.
47.How do glaciers contribute to shaping the landscape?
A.By causing earthquakes. B.By melting quickly to form lakes.
C.By carving out valleys and fjords. D.By providing water for rivers.
48.In which two main human activities is water important as mentioned in the passage?
A.Education and entertainment. B.Agriculture and industry.
C.Construction and fashion. D.Art and music.
49.Which of the following is an example of a water-related cultural landmark?
A.The Eiffel Tower. B.The Great Wall of China.

50.What challenge do we face regarding water as the population grows?

C.People should not throw away plastics. D.Hong Kong stops single-use plastics.

A.More people will choose to buy throwaway plastics.
B.Fewer Hong Kong people will go shopping on rainy days.
C.Many people in Hong Kong don’t like the change.
D.There will be fewer tourists in Hong Kong.

C.The Sydney Opera House. D.The Venice canals.
