In March 2006, burglars broke into a zoo in Queensland, Australia. They planned to steal a koala. Everybody loves koalas, right? With their big round eyes, flat noses, thick fur and hairy ears, these cute animals have become a popular symbol of Australia. However, appearances can be tricky. The koala at the zoo was very fierce. Soon the burglars had deep scratches(抓痕) from the koala's sharp claws(爪), so they decided to steal something easier. They stole a crocodile instead!
Koalas are interesting animals. A koala mother carries her baby, called a joey, in a warm pouch, or pocket, on her stomach. Koalas eat only the oily leaves of eucalyptus trees(桉树). These leaves are harmful to many other animals, but koalas eat about two and a half pounds(just over one kilo) every night. There is enough water in these leaves, so koalas do not drink very much. In fact, in one local Australian language the word koala means “no drink”.
4. What did the burglars steal in the end?
A. A koala. B. A crocodile. C. A joey. D. A tree.
5. What will “fierce” animals probably do?
A. They show politeness. B. They always feel hungry.

A. what they look like B. when they have babies
C. what they live on D. why they seldom drink
7. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Koalas Fight Back! B. Koalas Start to Change!
C. Koalas Beat Crocodiles! D. Koalas Prefer Oily Leaves!

Fernando Trujillo, a scientist from Colombia, spends most of his life studying river dolphins, also known as pink dolphins. He tries his best to save this kind of animals and provide them with a better living environment.
Trujillo took a strong interest in wild animals when he was a kid. His grandfather often took him to the Orinoco River. With all kinds of wildlife, the Orinoco River was a perfect place to have fun. When he went on a trip to the Amazon River, Trujillo met river dolphins for the first time. “I fell in love with the river dolphins as soon as I saw them. Even now, 35 years after we first met, I still feel excited to play with them,” Trujillo said with a smile.
River dolphins mainly live in the Amazon River and they mean a lot to people living near the river. They think river dolphins are sacred(神圣的) and can bring peace and joy to them. Sadly, river dolphins are in danger because of overfishing, climate(气候) change and deforestation(滥伐森林).
“When I began to do studies near the Amazon River, an accident happened. A river dolphin and her baby were trapped in a fishing net(网). I tried to save them with some local people, but we failed,” said Trujillo. He felt heartbroken and then he built a protection area for river dolphins in the Amazon River.
Trujillo works closely with the local government and communities. He hopes his wild friends can live a safe life in the future.
8. What do we know about river dolphins from the text?
A. They live well in many rivers. B. They are red.
C. They are in danger. D. They are dangerous.
9. What causes river dolphins to be in danger?

A. ①③④ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
10. The fourth paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. what local people did to protect river dolphins
B. how Trujillo fished with local people in the Amazon River

D. why Trujillo built the protection area for river dolphins in the Amazon River
11. In which part of a magazine can we probably find the passage?

C. People & Nature. D. Music & Films.
D(2025泰州靖江期末)
①The world has done a lot to protect elephants, but many of them are still losing lives for their ivory(象牙). At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 million elephants walked around Africa(非洲). But today, there are only 450,000 left. This is mainly because of people's hunting for ivory. With the need for ivory in markets growing, people keep killing elephants. Now at least 20,000 African elephants die each year.
②People call ivory “white gold”. Because of its unusual look, people often use it to make expensive things, such as jewellery(珠宝) and works of art. And the ivory material itself is so strong that people can store it for long. That's why many people are willing to pay high prices for things made of ivory.
③However, no matter how expensive the ivory is, it's wrong of humans to kill elephants. So some scientists are working hard on making the same beauty of ivory with no killing.
④Thaddäa Rath, a scientist from a college of Austria, has created(制造) the manmade ivory called “Digory” with her team. The chemical structure(化学结构) of Digory is completely different from that of the natural ivory, but it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye.
⑤Another scientist, Fritz Vollrath from the UK, who is also working to protect elephants, felt excited that Digory could save many elephants from danger. He said, “We still need to do more work to improve Digory so that people around the world will accept Digory and like to buy and use it. And I believe that technology(技术) like this will help protect more wildlife.”
12. How does the writer tell us elephants are in danger in Paragraph 1?
A. By showing us numbers. B. By introducing Africa.
C. By telling us a story. D. By giving an example.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The elephant. B. The work of art.
C. The ivory. D. The expensive thing.
14. Which is the right structure of the article?
A. ①②/③④/⑤ B. ①/②/③④⑤
C. ①②③/④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④/⑤
15. The writer writes the article to tell us ________.
A. Digory is a fine work of art
B. a lot of wildlife is now facing great danger
C. the ivory material is really strong and expensive
D. scientists are protecting wildlife through technology

White Fang was amazed by what he saw the men do. They were the masters of things not alive. Their tent was especially strange and big to him.
White Fang explored the camp. He met a puppy, who was older than him, called LipLip. White Fang wanted to be friendly, but LipLip suddenly attacked him. They became enemies. White Fang's mother wanted him to stay with her, but White Fang was curious and soon he was exploring again.
Gray Beaver was doing something important with two sticks and some grass. Women and children carried sticks and branches to him. White Fang saw something like mist(雾状物) coming from the sticks and branches, and then, something bright like the sun appeared, and grew.
White Fang went towards this bright thing with his nose, and touched it with his tongue. Then he jumped into the air, yelping. Gray Beaver laughed, and told everybody, so they all started laughing too. Kiche started snarling loudly, but she could not get to her cub because of the rope. Poor White Fang sat there crying in the middle of the laughing men. Their laughter hurt him more than the pain.
He went back to his mother and lay down beside her. As night came, he felt sad. He missed the woods and the cave. Here, there were so many people making noise, and all the dogs. The men were always doing something, using their power. They were gods!

Dear_Simon,
Thank_you_for_your_email. I'm glad to hear about your interest in wild animals, especially golden eagles.
Golden eagles are magnificent birds with broad wings and brown feathers. They are known for their sharp eyesight and hunting skills. Unfortunately, they are facing several problems, such as reduced space and a lack of food. Human activities like deforestation and hunting have also threatened their survival. To help protect them, we should work towards creating more forests and demand strict regulations against hunting. Educating people about the importance of these birds can also make a difference.
I hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.
Best_regards,
Zhang_Hua
