A reader wrote to say that she felt very lonely at break between classes because her best friend wasn’t around her, because no one could chat with her and nobody could play with her. She stood there feeling like everyone was looking at her, or on the other hand she might feel as if nobody was looking at her. Everyone else was in groups. She felt really left out. What would she do? Here are some tips for her—and to all children who feel lonely sometimes.
It’s hard when a best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (表达欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with. Act friendly, and say “Hi, can I play, too?” or just join in.
If you have some problems doing this or if you’re feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something new with him/ her, and you can also introduce him/ her to your new friends!

The United Nations decided that 2025 is the year of glacier protection. It set March 21, 2025 as the first World Day for Glaciers. This event encouraged people to save glaciers.
What are glaciers?
You can imagine glaciers as slowly-moving ice and snow on land. Over time, the snow adds up and turns into glacier ice. Glaciers have shaped mountains over the earth’s history. They are still moving and changing land in many places today.
▲
Glaciers are not just needed for the land. When glaciers melt, the nutrients (养料) from the water are good for life in rivers and oceans. In some places, glaciers provide water for people and animals. Glaciers in the world cover 10% of the land. They also hold 70% of the earth’s fresh water. In areas like the Himalayas, many people need glacier water to live. This water fills big rivers, such as the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra.
Why are glaciers disappearing (消失)?
Climate change is leading to serious problems for glaciers. Many glaciers have disappeared. The atmosphere (大气层) around the earth is like the glass of a greenhouse, letting sunlight in and keeping most heat from getting out. This makes the earth warm enough for life. But when we burn wood and coal, we produce a gas called carbon dioxide. Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere and causes it to keep in too much heat. As the earth’s temperature is increasing, glaciers melt faster.
The influence (影响) of glaciers disappearing
If glaciers disappear, there will be less water for us to drink and farm, while floods may happen more often. Mountains with glaciers are home to special ecosystems and a large number of animals. As temperatures rise and glaciers melt, they are not fit for these living things.
36.What can we know about glaciers in Paragraph 2?
A.They are made of icy ocean water. B.They disappear completely in summer.
C.They move slowly and change the land. D.They are mainly on high mountain tops.
37.Which sentence can be put in the blank “ ▲ ”?
A.When do glaciers melt? B.Why are glaciers important?
C.What will happen to glaciers? D.How many glaciers are there in all?
38.How does the atmosphere deal with sunlight according to the passage?
A. B.
C. D.
39.What will happen if glaciers disappear?
A.There will be more drinking water. B.The water will be better for farming.
C.Plants and animals will be in trouble. D.There will be fewer floods than before.
40.What is the main purpose (目的) of the text?
A.To call for actions to protect glaciers. B.To record glacier movement.
C.To introduce some facts about glaciers. D.To show how glaciers shaped mountains.

Dear humans,
It’s the first time that I have written to you, my children. I used to send you many messages. But you always overlooked them. So I wanted to write you a letter.
At the very beginning, let me tell you more about our family. Dear humans, not just you, I have many other children. Some of them swim in water, some fly in the sky, some live in ice-covered places and some run in the grasslands. Some are as small as your fingernails, such as bees; some are as big as cars, such as elephants; some are as high as trees, such as giraffes. They may be very close to you, or even live in your house. But there are others that you may never meet. You bring them home to be your pets, friends and helpers. You put them in zoos. You kill them for their meat and fur. And you even hunt them for fun. They bring you money and happiness, but they also bring illness and death.
I hope you can remember that wild animals are not your food or clothes. They are not killers, either. They are, in fact, not only your brothers but also sisters. We are a family.
Humans, you are clever, hard-working and filled with kindness. You have colorful cultures and advanced technologies (高科技). You can decide where you go, and where I go.
But you don’t respect me. You change my weather, my lands, my rivers. You ask so much of me more than what I can give you. I’m worried that one day you will be lonely.

根据前文“As we get older, many of us trick ourselves into thinking that we’ve missed certain chances.”以及常识可知,“It’s never too late to do sth.” hard“困难的”:too hard to do“太难而不能做”,逻辑不通;nice“美好的”、tiring“累人的”语义不通。
根据后文“he decided to step away from his studies”可知,他最初是“进入”了这所大学学习,故选entered。

故选if。
根据“one more class to get his diploma”可知,拿到文凭需要“完成”剩下的课程。
根据“walked across the graduation stage with his diploma”可知,85岁高龄拿到文凭是一件令人振奋的事,必然会得到大家的喝彩与欢呼,故选cheers。
根据后文“If you really want it, don’t give up”可知,这是老人给其他人的“建议”,故选suggestions。

29.The underlined phrase “left out” in Paragraph 1 means “________” in Chinese.
30.Some kids need help from teachers to make friends because ________.
A.they are shy or not good at making friends B.they have no time to stay with others

C.How to make friends. D.How to speak in a group.
【答案】29.B 30.A 31.C

So, humans, grow up to be more responsible I hope you and all the wildlife can live happily in my arms.
