Unit 4 Being a good learner Lesson 1 How to learn physics 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Knowledge Objectives
Students will master vocabulary related to physics learning (e.g., concept, key words, gravity, force, pull, centre, challenge, study tips) and understand the conversation about learning physics between Wang Mei and Li Lin.
Students will be able to comprehend the conversation, tick physics questions, fill in blanks, tick correct answers, and discuss learning challenges in pairs.
2. Ability Objectives
Improve listening and reading skills: Extract information from the conversation to complete tasks.
Enhance speaking and collaborative skills: Discuss learning challenges with partners and share study methods.
3. Affective Objectives
Help students understand that physics learning can be challenging but manageable with proper methods, encourage them to seek help and share study tips, and foster a positive attitude towards learning physics.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key Vocabulary & Phrases
Physics - related words: concept, key words, gravity, force, pull, centre
Key phrases: study tips, learning challenge, focus on
2. Key Sentence Patterns
Talking about physics learning: “Physics is a challenge for me. It’s really difficult to understand all the concepts.” “You can focus on the key words. For example, gravity is a force. It pulls everything towards the centre of the earth.”
Asking for and giving study tips: “Can you share some study tips with me?” “You can also compare related concepts to understand their similarities and differences.”
3. Key and Challenging Points
Key Points: Understand the conversation about physics learning methods, master related vocabulary and phrases, and complete listening and speaking tasks.
Challenging Points: Applying physics learning methods to discuss and solve personal learning challenges.
III. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm - up & Lead - in
Activity: Physics Question Tick - off
Ask students: “Which of the following are physics questions? Think and tick.” Let students tick the physics questions (Why do leaves fall? Why can we stand on the ground?) and explain their choices.
Step 2: Listening & Comprehension
Activity 1: Conversation Listening and Blank Filling
Play the conversation audio. Ask students to listen and fill in the blanks about Wang Mei and Li Lin's physics learning situation. Check answers to ensure students grasp the main information.
Activity 2: Conversation Listening and Answer Ticking
Play the conversation again. Ask students to listen and tick the correct answers for questions A - C (examples Li Lin gives, tips from Li Lin, correct statement).
Step 3: Pair Discussion & Sharing
Activity: Learning Challenge Discussion
Ask students to work in pairs to talk about what they can do to solve their learning challenges, using the dialogue as a model (talking about favourite subjects, challenges, and sharing study methods).
Step 4: Summary & Homework
Activity 1: Lesson Summary
Recap key vocabulary and phrases (physics - related terms), the content of the conversation about physics learning methods, and the importance of seeking and sharing study tips.
Activity 2: Homework Assignment
Assign homework: (1) Write a short passage about your favourite subject and the study methods you use for it. (2) Share your passage with a classmate and discuss study methods for different subjects.
IV. Assessment
In - class: Assess students’ performance in listening tasks, pair discussion participation, and ability to express about learning challenges and study methods.
Homework: Evaluate students' passages about favourite subjects and study methods, and their discussions with classmates to see if they can reflect on and apply effective study methods.
V. Design Purpose
Skill Integration: Combine listening (comprehension), reading (conversation understanding), writing (short passage), speaking (discussion, sharing), and collaborative skills to deepen understanding of physics learning and study methods.
Real - life Application: Use discussion, writing, and homework to help students connect with their own subject learning experiences and apply effective study methods.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit 4 How to learn physics
Key Vocabulary & Phrases:
concept, key words, gravity, force, pull, centre, study tips, learning challenge, focus on
Conversation Summary:
Wang Mei finds physics challenging. Li Lin shares tips: focus on key words, compare related concepts. They agree to study together every Friday evening.
Homework: Write about favourite subject & study methods & share with classmate.
