Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. My spirits ebb, as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. “Just wait,” a neighbour advised. “You’ll wake up one morning and spring will just be here.”
And look on 3 May that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky, and forest revealed their purples, blues, and greens. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark twisted branches stretch out in unpruned abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled with the scent of apple.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbours opened their windows and stepped onto their porches. These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens.
My mobile-home neighbour was the first to speak. “You’re not cutting it down, are you?” she asked anxiously. Another neighbour frowned as I cut off a branch. “Don’t kill it, now,” he warned. Soon, half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living, and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder. I couldn’t help recalling Robert Frost’s words:
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods
One thaw (解冻) led to another. Just the other day, I saw one of my neighbours at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.”
4. By saying that “my spirits ebb” in paragraph 1, the author means that .
A. he feels relieved B. he is cheerful
C. he is astonished D. he feels blue
5. Which of the following is TRUE about the apple tree according to the passage?
A. No one other than the author cares about the apple tree.
B. It grows on public property.
C. It is a source of fresh fruit for the neighbourhood
D. It is carefully attended to by the author.
6. It can be inferred from the neighbour’s words in the last paragraph that .
A. He has a passion for gardening.
B. He was concerned about the safety of the tree.
C. He enjoyed the company of his neighbours.
D. He changed his mind about pruning the tree.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Beauty of Nature
B. The Secret of the Apple Tree.
C. Under the Blossoms.
D. The Spring in Maine.

Although websites such as Facebook and MySpace experienced increasing growth during the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, some users fail to realize the fact that the information they post online can come back to trouble them. First, employers can monitor employees who maintain a blog, photo diary, or website. Employers can look for troublesome employees’ opinions, sensitive information disclosures, or wildly inappropriate conduct. For example, a North Carolina newspaper fired one of its features writers after she created a blog on which she anonymously wrote about the characteristics of her job and coworkers.
The second unintended use of information from social networking websites is employers who check on potential employees. A New York Times article reported that many companies recruiting (招募) on college campuses use search engines and social networking websites such as MySpace, Xanga, and Facebook to conduct background checks. Although the use of MySpace or Google to investigate a student’s background is somewhat upsetting to many undergraduates, the Times noted that the use of Facebook is especially shocking to students who believe that Facebook is limited to current students and recent alumni.
Company employers are not the only people interested in college students’ lives. The third unintended use of social networking websites is college administrators who monitor the Internet— especially Facebook— for student misconduct. For example, a college in Boston’s Back Bay expelled (除名) its Student Government Association President for joining a Facebook group highly critical of a campus police sergeant. In addition, fifteen students at a state university in North Carolina faced charges in court for underage drinking because of photos that appeared on Facebook.
Although more users of websites such as Facebook are becoming aware of the potential pitfalls (陷阱) of online identities, many regular users still fail to take three basic security precautions. First, only make your information available to a specific list of individuals whom you approve. Second, regularly search for potentially harmful information about yourself that may have been posted by mistake or by a disgruntled (不满的) former colleague. Third, never post offensive material under your name or on your page as, despite the best precautions, this material will likely make its way to the wider world. By taking these simple steps, members of the digital world can realize the many benefits of e- community without experiencing some of the damaging unintended consequences.
8. The main purpose of the passage is to _________.
A. explain the growth of the digital world through from the aspect of privacy
B. discuss the risks of the digital world and suggest ways to protect yourself
C. propose steps Facebook, MySpace, and Google can take to protect user privacy
D. illustrate potential unintended uses of private information
9. The author implies that users should take all of the following actions to protect their online privacy EXCEPT _________.
A. know to whom you make your online information available
B. avoid uploading information that would be damaging if it were discovered
C. carefully select and limit who can view your electronic profile
D. speak with employers to inform them of any misinformation published about you
10. Which of the following best describes the relationship between the last paragraph and the other paragraphs?
A. It offers detailed examples to support previous point s of view.
B. It summarizes the points of view in the previous paragraphs.
C. It provides suggestions to solve the previously mentioned problems.
D. It offers evidence to make the previous point s of view clearer.
11. According to the passage, which of following does the writer imply?
A. Information obtained unwillingly from the Internet is permissible in court.
B. It is impossible to protect yourself from unintended uses of information online.
C. Even if you restrict who can view your data, the government may still access it.
D. Done properly, posting offensive information about oneself causes no risk.
D
“Know thyself” is the most famous saying of Greek philosophy. The idea of self-knowledge is so foundational to a meaningful existence. In his tragedy (悲剧) Thyestes, the Stoic philosopher Seneca writes, “Death lies heavily on him / Who, though to all the world well known, / Is stranger to himself alone.” And as Shakespeare asserts in his comedy As You Like It, “The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man /knows himself to be a fool.”
What exactly does it mean to know yourself? For neuroscientists, self-knowledge is the combination of two forms of information, your own self-beliefs and your perceptions of how others view you. This technical definition of self-knowledge concerns only the mechanisms involved and does not say anything about the quality of the information. In effect, if you think you’re a rooster and believe others see you as one too, that counts as self-knowledge. However, I strongly question that the thinkers at Greece had a bit more in mind than this; they no doubt meant “Know thyself accurately.” That is a much taller order, requiring a huge quantity of truthful information about your inner states — attitudes, beliefs, emotions, and motives. Accurate self-knowledge also means avoiding mistakes and correcting illusions, being completely honest with yourself, and predicting how you will feel and react in the future.
By this impossibly strict standard, we probably all overestimate our capacity for accurate self-knowledge. Psychological experiments have revealed that ratings of one’s own self-assessments are “moderate to poor” in accuracy and are generally less sound than external evaluations. One reason is that we’re likely to make cognitive (认知的) errors about what we see happening in our lives. Researchers have found that humans are easy to miss seeing our problems, mistakes, and opportunities.
Many things in our lives go unnoticed because we don’t know the language for them or don’t understand them. This is called hypo-cognition, a deficit of cognition. In studies exploring this phenomenon, British participants were more likely to notice cheese than Asian dumplings in their daily lives, while Chinese participants noticed the reverse. Much of our self-knowledge deficit comes from willful ignorance. Psychologists have long observed the human tendency to use motivated reasoning to reassure ourselves that our opinions are right, to ignore critical self-reflective information, and generally to maintain positive illusions and find ways to avoid facing reality-based negative emotions. So basic and necessary to our being are these traits that collectively they have been called our “psychological immune system.” This characteristic rationalizing is almost certainly based in our biology.
This human capacity to maintain ignorance in the face of potentially negative self-knowledge might make you more comfortable in the short term, but it leads to many missed opportunities for greater well-being and success in the long run. Research has shown that more honest self-awareness — of both positive and negative information — improves self-development because you know what to improve. This enables better personal decision making rooted in accurate information, especially when striving toward goals.
12. The author mentions Seneca and Shakespeare mainly to ______.
A. draw a comparison
B. give a suggestion
C explain a concept
D. strengthen an argument
13. As for the definition of self-knowledge from neuroscientists, the author is ______.
A. appreciative
B. suspicious
C. unconcerned
D. neutral
14. What does the term “hypo-cognition” underlined in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. The inability to process truthful information.
B. The refusal to reflect on negative information.
C. The lack of concepts to describe specific experiences.
D. The tendency to spot cultural differences in perception.
15. It is implied in this passage that we should ______.
A. focus on negative rather than positive feedback
B. follow the beliefs and emotions of our internal states
C. stop making excuses for unfavorable self-knowledge
D. spare no effort to get rid of imperfect self-knowledge

Charisma
Are leaders born or made? Many leaders throughout history—such as Gandhi, Churchill, Napoleon, and Martin Luther King—seem to have a special quality that made them powerful and persuasive. We can identify that quality as charisma, but can we explain it?
Charisma means a natural ability to attract other people and make them admire you. It is a complex mixture of social and emotional (情感的) skills. _____16_____ Richard Wiseman, a famous psychologist, points out that there are three key qualities of a charismatic person: They feel their own emotions strongly;they inspire strong emotions in other people; and they are unaffected by the influences of other charismatic people.
You needn’ t worry if you don’ t have these qualities. _____17_____ Wiseman says that when you come upon someone who is charismatic you can copy his or her body language and facial expressions without realizing it. This is called mirroring, and it works partly because people’ s behavior influences their emotions. _____18_____ He proves his point by giving the example of smiling back at someone who smiled at you. Your smiling back suggests that you accept the goodwill from the other person and hope to give it back to him.
_____19_____ For example, if you stand up straight and raise your chest, you are more likely to feel confident and inspire others to feel confidence in you. Another expert says that the most charismatic people are usually good listeners. They give others the impression of being focused and modest.
Charisma plays a large part in success because it is linked to self-confidence. _____20_____
One successful leadership coach points out that you need to come by your skills and techniques naturally, she warns—if the personality you project is not real, you may come across as insincere.
A. This type of physical presence can be used to great effect.
B. Today there is growing evidence that charisma can be learned.
C. Charismatic persons should be active and sensitive to their surroundings.
D. It needs to be recognized that charisma is more than just being optimistic.
E. It helps to make strong personal connections and communicate effectively with others.
F. But it is worth noting that charisma can’ t be a pretended ability although it can be learned.
G. He adds you’ re unaware of picking up others’ gestures, but you know it makes you feel good.

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer.
Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory. As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
Para 1: Before he realized it Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room.
Para 2: The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

根据第一段中“Every April I am troubled by the same concern that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing grey. (每年四月,我都会被同样的担忧所困扰,担心今年春天不会到来。风景看起来单调乏味,山峦、天空和森林都是灰色的。)”以及“as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine. (就像我第一次来到缅因州时四月的降雪一样。)”可知,作者初到缅因州时,四月的景色单调灰暗,甚至还下过雪,这样的景象让作者情绪低落,因此,“My spirits ebb ”指的是“he feels blue (他感到沮丧)”。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighbourhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. (它坐落在我家附近的一块未开发的土地上。它不属于任何人,因此属于每个人。)”可知,这棵苹果树生长不属于任何人地方,因此属于大家,即生长在公共土地上,属于公共财产。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighbourhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that apple tree again.” (他提到这个冬天格外漫长,还抱怨说很久没和邻里的人好好见个面、聊聊天了。接着,他看着我说:“我们得再修剪一下那棵苹果树了。”)”可知,邻居抱怨冬天漫长,没有和社区的人长时间交流,然后提出再修剪苹果树,由此可推知,他享受和邻居在一起的时光。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第三段中“Then there was the old apple tree. (还有那棵老苹果树。)”以及第五段中“Soon, half the neighbourhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living, and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder.

A. know to whom you make your online information available

_____17_____ Wiseman says that when you come upon someone who is charismatic, you can copy his or her body language and facial expressions without realizing it.

故填was denied。
故填that。
故填the。
故填how。

Labor -A Traditional Virtue
Good morning, everyone.
Today, I would like to talk about the theme “Labor-A Traditional Virtue” in the context of the upcoming Labor Education Week at our school.
Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a labor experience program organized by our school. We spent a whole day working at a local farm, planting vegetables, and doing various physical tasks. Although it was tiring, I felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the value of labor. Labor not only helps us develop a strong work ethic but also teaches us essential life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance.
Thank you for your attention.

Para 1: Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room.
Para 2: The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room. At the sight of Hector, Mr. Adler mumbled “Where did I put that sheet of Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers?” Hearing this, Hector lowered his head. Noticing his nervousness, Mr. Adler inquired what had happened. At that time, Hector nervously took out the envelope, submitted it to Mr. Adler and confessed that he had cheated by reading the questions on it. To his surprise, Mr. Adler didn’t blame him but praised him. Instantly, a wave of relief seized Hector.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. Having been up late studying, Hector looked exhausted but excited. So did the other competitors. All the eyes fixed on the stage, Hector felt his heart beating fast. Unfortunately, the questions Mr. Adler rewrote were so tough that he was knocked out in round three. But Hector realized that he didn’t feel bad about losing. Whether others knew he was smart was of no significance. He’d set out to learn everything about the world and ended up learning more about himself.
