Students will be familiar with the key sentence patterns used to describe past events, like "What happened...?", "When did it happen?", "I was doing... when...". B. Ability Objectives Develop students' listening skills by listening to dialogues and passages about past events. They should be able to catch key information such as who, what, when, where, and how of the events. Improve students' speaking ability. Students are expected to use the learned vocabulary and sentence patterns to describe past events in their daily lives or historical events they know. Enhance students' reading skills. They can read texts about past events with comprehension, understand the main idea and details, and be able to answer relevant questions. Train students' writing skills. Students should be able to write a short passage to describe a past event they remember, using the simple past tense and the learned expressions. C. Emotional Objectives Arouse students' interest in learning about historical events and their curiosity about the past. Cultivate students' awareness of cherishing the present and learning from past experiences. Encourage students to share their own experiences and listen to others' stories, promoting communication and cooperation among classmates. 教学重难点 A. Key Points Mastery of new vocabulary related to historical events and experiences. Correct usage of the simple past tense, including the formation of regular and irregular verbs, and its application in sentences. Sentence patterns for asking about and describing past events. B. Difficult Points Distinguishing the usage of the simple past tense and the past continuous tense. For example, understanding the difference between "I watched TV last night." and "I was watching TV when she called." Using irregular verbs in the simple past tense accurately, as the forms of irregular verbs are not formed according to regular rules and need to be memorized. Organizing ideas and writing a coherent passage to describe a past event, which requires students to arrange sentences in a logical order and use appropriate transitional words. A. New Words and Phrases land v. 着陆;降落 e.g. The plane landed safely at the airport. moon n. 月亮;月球 e.g. The moon looks very bright tonight. earthquake n. 地震 e.g. An earthquake hit the city last week. accident n. 事故;意外遭遇 e.g. He had a car accident on his way to work. hero n. 英雄;男主角 e.g. The firefighters are the heroes in the fire. first of all 首先 e.g. First of all, let's review what we learned yesterday. at that time 在那时 e.g. I was a little girl at that time. B. Simple Past Tense Formation of Regular Verbs Add "-ed" to the base form of the verb. For example: work - worked clean - cleaned play - played For verbs ending in "e", just add "-d". For example: live - lived use - used For verbs with a consonant + vowel + consonant pattern and stressed on the last syllable, double the last consonant and add "-ed". For example: stop - stopped plan - planned Formation of Irregular Verbs There are many irregular verbs, and their past forms need to be memorized. Some common ones are: go - went see - saw come - came do - did have - had Usage To describe an action that happened and was completed in the past. e.g. I visited my grandparents last weekend. To talk about past habits. e.g. She often walked to school when she was a child. C. Key Sentence Patterns Asking about Past Events What happened + (地点 / 时间)? e.g. What happened in the park yesterday? When did it happen? e.g. When did the earthquake happen? Describing Past Events Subject + verb (past form) + other elements. e.g. He bought a new book last week. I was doing... when... e.g. I was doing my homework when the phone rang. 教学过程 A. Warming - up (5 minutes) Greet the students as usual. Show some pictures of famous historical events on the PPT, such as the first flight of the Wright brothers, the founding of the People's Republic of China, etc. Ask students to look at the pictures and try to say something about what they see. Encourage them to use simple English words they know. For example: T: Look at this picture. What can you see? S: I can see a plane. T: Do you know what's special about this plane? S: Maybe it's the first plane. T: Yes, it's the first plane invented by the Wright brothers. It was a very important event in history. B. Presentation (12 minutes) New Words Teaching Present the new words one by one on the PPT. Use pictures, real objects (if possible), or short video clips to help students understand the meaning. For example, when teaching the word "earthquake", show a short video of an earthquake scene. Then read the word aloud, ask students to repeat after you several times, and explain the pronunciation and spelling. After presenting all the new words, play a word - guessing game. Describe the meaning of a word in English, and let students guess which word it is. For example: "This is a natural disaster. The ground shakes and buildings may fall down. What is it?" Students should answer "earthquake". Simple Past Tense Introduction Write some sentences on the blackboard, such as "I play basketball every day." and "I played basketball yesterday." Ask students to compare the two sentences and find out the differences. Then introduce the concept of the simple past tense, explaining that it is used to describe actions that happened in the past. Show some more examples of the simple past tense on the PPT, both with regular and irregular verbs. Point out the formation rules of regular and irregular verbs in the simple past tense again. C. Listening (8 minutes) Let students open their textbooks to the listening part in Section A. Tell them to look at the pictures and the questions first to get some ideas about what they will hear. Play the recording for the first time. Students just listen and try to get a general idea of the conversation. Play the recording again. This time, ask students to listen carefully and fill in the blanks or answer the questions in their textbooks. Check the answers with the whole class. Play the recording one more time if necessary, pausing at the key points to help students understand better. D. Speaking (10 minutes) Pair Work Divide the students into pairs. Ask them to make up a conversation about a past event they remember using the new words and sentence patterns they have learned. They can choose from historical events or their own personal experiences. For example, one student can start like this: "What happened to you last weekend?" The other student answers: "I had an accident. I fell off my bike." Walk around the classroom, listen to their conversations, and offer help and guidance when needed. Group Presentation Select several pairs to come to the front of the class and present their conversations. The rest of the students listen carefully and can ask questions after the presentation. Give praise and encouragement to the students who perform well. E. Reading (5 minutes) Present a short passage about a historical event on the PPT. It can be about the first moon landing or another event related to the unit. Ask students to read the passage quickly and find out the main idea. Then let them read it again more carefully and answer some detailed questions on the PPT, such as "When did the event happen?", "Who was involved?", etc. Check the answers with the students and explain any difficult sentences or new words in the passage. F. Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary Summarize what has been learned in this class with the students. Review the new words, the simple past tense, and the key sentence patterns. Ask students to share what they have learned and what they are still confused about. Homework Ask students to write a short passage about a past event they remember. They should use at least 5 new words and 3 sentences in the simple past tense. Ask students to review the new words and sentence patterns, and prepare for a dictation in the next class. 教学反思 In this class, the use of pictures, videos, and games in the warming - up and presentation stages effectively attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in learning. However, in the future, more diverse teaching materials can be prepared to meet the different learning needs of students. During the listening practice, some students still had difficulty catching the key information. In the following classes, more listening training should be carried out, and different listening strategies can be taught, such as predicting before listening and taking notes while listening. In the speaking activity, most students actively participated, but a few students were a bit shy and did not express themselves fully. More encouragement and individual guidance should be given to these students in the future to build up their confidence in speaking English. Regarding the teaching of the simple past tense, although examples were given and rules were explained, some students still made mistakes in using irregular verbs. More exercises and review are needed to help students master this important grammar point. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
