B. Key Sentences
The Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, falls on the first day of the first lunar month.
There is a legend about the Spring Festival.
Nian, the monster, came out on the last night of every year.
Nian was afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the colour red.
So people set off fireworks and firecrackers, hung red lanterns, and put Spring Festival couplets on the doors.
Family members gather together, enjoy a meal, and celebrate the New Year!
Many people stay up late and set off firecrackers at midnight for good luck.
C. Grammar - Adverbials
Adverbials are words or phrases we use to give more information about verbs, adjectives, adverbs or sentences. They often tell how, where, when, or why something happens. For example:
It is the most important traditional festival in China. (in China is an adverbial of place)
Nian, the monster, came out on the last night of every year. (on the last night of every year is an adverbial of time)
This way, they could drive away Nian and bring good luck for the coming year. (This way is an adverbial of manner)
教学过程
A. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of different festivals around the world on the PPT, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, the Mid - Autumn Festival, etc. Ask students to name these festivals and briefly talk about what they know about them. Then lead in the topic of this lesson - the Spring Festival.
B. Pre - reading (10 minutes)
New Words Teaching
Present the new words one by one on the PPT, along with pictures or short videos to help students understand the meanings. For example, when teaching "firecracker", show a video of people setting off firecrackers.
Read the words aloud for students to follow, paying attention to the pronunciation. Then let students read the words in groups or individually to practice.
Use some simple sentences to help students understand the usage of new words. For example, "The noise of the firecrackers is very loud." "We hang red couplets on the doors during the Spring Festival."
Background Introduction
Briefly introduce the importance of the Spring Festival in Chinese culture. It is a time for family reunions, celebrations, and looking forward to a new year.
Ask students some questions to activate their prior knowledge, such as "When is the Spring Festival usually celebrated in China?" "What do you usually do during the Spring Festival?"
C. While - reading (15 minutes)
Fast Reading
Let students read the passage quickly to get the main idea. Then ask them to answer the following questions:
What is the other name for the Spring Festival?
When does the Spring Festival fall?
What is the legend about the Spring Festival?
Check the answers with the whole class and clarify any misunderstandings.
Careful Reading
Ask students to read the passage carefully again and complete a mind - map on the blackboard or on their worksheets. The mind - map can include aspects such as the time of the Spring Festival, preparations (clean homes, buy new clothes, make delicious dishes), customs (set off fireworks, hang red lanterns, put couplets, give lucky money), and celebrations (family gatherings, temple fairs, dragon and lion dances).
Analyze some long and difficult sentences in the text, such as "Family members gather together, enjoy a meal, and celebrate the New Year!" Explain the sentence structure and the function of each part.
Teach the usage of adverbials. Let students find adverbials in the text, such as "always", "with care and love", "almost", "together", "late", "at midnight", etc., and analyze what kind of information they provide (time, place, manner, etc.).
D. Post - reading (10 minutes)
Group Discussion
Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. Ask each group to discuss the following topics:
What are the most interesting customs during the Spring Festival in your opinion?
Do you think the Spring Festival traditions will change in the future? Why or why not?
Each group selects a representative to report the discussion results to the whole class.
Writing Practice
Ask students to write a short passage about their favorite part of the Spring Festival. They can use the information and expressions they have learned in this lesson. Provide some writing hints on the PPT, such as "My favorite part of the Spring Festival is... because... During this time, I usually... It makes me feel..."
Walk around the classroom to offer help and guidance while students are writing. After they finish, ask some students to read their passages aloud, and give some positive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson with the students, including new words, phrases, key sentences, the knowledge about the Spring Festival, and the usage of adverbials.
Emphasize the importance of understanding and inheriting Chinese traditional culture while learning English.
Homework
Ask students to make a poster about the Spring Festival. They can include pictures, words, and their own descriptions of the festival.
Let students tell their foreign friends (imaginary or real) about the Spring Festival in English through email or online chat if possible.
教学反思
After this lesson, students have shown great interest in learning about the Spring Festival in English. Most students can master the new words, phrases and key sentences, and are able to talk about the Spring Festival to a certain extent. The use of pictures, videos and group discussions has effectively activated students' enthusiasm and participation in class.
However, there are also some areas that need improvement. When teaching the cultural connotations behind the Spring Festival customs, some students may still have difficulties in fully understanding and expressing them in English. In future teaching, more real - life examples and cultural background knowledge can be added to help students better understand. Also, in the writing practice, some students' language expressions are relatively simple. Teachers can provide more model essays and writing skills training in the following classes to improve students' writing ability. Overall, this lesson has achieved most of the teaching objectives, but continuous improvement is needed to better meet the learning needs of students.
