三、阅读理解
Have you heard of the saying “If you fall off the horse, get back on.”? It means that things may get difficult, and you may make many mistakes. But you should have the passion (激情) and energy to keep going. This is called perseverance (毅力). It can help you get a lot of things.
Perseverance means keeping doing something for a long time. It doesn’t matter whether it is easy or difficult. For example, you practise a trick on your bike again and again. Or you finish a picture without giving up. These show perseverance. Florence, a 13-year-old girl, says, “It means never giving up and trying hard to push yourself. I go running with my mum three times a week. Sometimes I feel good and sometimes I don’t. But I still do it because I want to be the fastest in my class. Whether in good situations or bad ones, we need perseverance.”
Studies show that when you feel hopeful and work for a goal you really want, it can reduce stress (压力) and make you feel happier. When you get something you worked hard for and face difficulties on the way, it can develop your confidence and make you feel braver to try new things. Angela Duckworth is an expert (专家) on people’s thoughts and feelings. She studies perseverance and calls it “grit”. She thinks that having grit is really important for us to succeed. She says, “No matter how talented (有天赋的) you are at something or how well you do in school, you must have grit. When things are hard, perseverance is even more important. It can help you get past the hard times and reach your goals.” Duckworth believes perseverance is something anyone can learn. The best way to learn it is to have a growth mind. This means believing that your brain can grow. You can get anything if you put your mind to it. As the book The Big Life Journal says, “People with a growth idea know they can get better by working hard. They keep trying even when things are difficult.”

Cooperation comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kindness. It's easy to tell that kindness is very important. What is kindness then? To be exact, kindness is the quality of being friendly. If we give up our seats on the bus, help a classmate solve a math problem, or welcome a new member into a group activity, we are showing kindness. Actually, these acts are done without expectation of reward (回报).
We begin to realise that while helping others, we’re in fact helping ourselves. Showing kindness benefits us in different ways. It helps us know about ourselves. It develops our problem-solving skills. It also gives us the chance to be thankful.
We can never imagine the power of one simple act of kindness. It may change our day. And that day may change our week. That week may change the rest of the year—or even our whole life.
In short, we rise by lifting others.
Here are some teenagers’ acts of kindness. Linda: I sat next to a new student at lunch. I was pleased because I made her day.
Kayla: In order to raise money and protect wild animals, I held a singing competition. I was proud of it.
Peter: I opened the door for an old lady. I felt happy because I could help other people.

Chen Jingwen, a 21-year-old junior student at Tianjin University in North China, started to livestream (直播) her studies after she arrived in Japan in July for a one-year exchange program. ★ , she came up with the idea of setting up a virtual (虚拟的) study room through livestreaming.
The sound of a pen on the paper and the rustling of the turning pages sounded in the rooms of her viewers across the screen as they joined Chen’s study group through the livestream. Sometimes, comments (评论) floated at the top of the screen saying, “Good luck for the exam tomorrow!” or “Don’t push yourself too hard at school!”
“The small talk and caring comments between me and my audience make me feel like I am studying with my classmates. I am no longer lonely.” Chen said.
What her livestream, silent like a mime show, presents is quite different from those found on other popular video-sharing platforms. However, in just a few months, the number of followers of Chen’s Watermelon’s Study Room has grown from dozens to several thousand.
On one side of her livestream page, Chen has set up a timer to divide her study period into 45-minute focus sessions followed by 10-minute breaks, as well as a checklist, which serves as a reminder to her and the viewers to produce a more efficient study experience.
Zhong Binglin, president of the Chinese Society of Education, said, “Long periods of studying alone can bring a great feeling of depression (沮丧) . Having some role models as study partners, whether it’s offline or online, will give you a more productive and enjoyable mindset.”

Do you know Zhang Jing? She is from Hangzhou. She was sure about her job when she was at middle school. “I want to be a diplomat (外交官) when I grow up. I am going to work for the government,” she said to all her friends.
To make her dream come true, she always worked much harder than others. Every morning, after she got up, she read English and listened to English news. She spent lots of time doing different kinds of English exercise. Sometimes, if she couldn’t do something well, she would always tell herself, “I will do better next time.”
Zhang’s teacher once said, “She was a good student and always got good grades. She went to China Foreign Affairs University (中国外交学院) at last, although she could go to some more excellent university, like Peking University and Tsinghua University.”
Now Zhang Jing is one of the greatest interpreters (口译者) in China. In fact, it’s not easy to work as an interpreter at all. You should be good at English. At the same time, you must think fast. Zhang does a good job, and it helps her become successful.
