Every summer since I was ten, Grandma would take me to her beach cottage in Port Luminelle, a coastal town in Provence. The vine-covered wooden house always smelt of salty sea breeze, and its wooden floor groaning like an old ship. She believed tides carried secrets — if you listened closely enough, the sea would whisper life’s answers that bound humans to its rhythm.
On my twelfth birthday, Grandma handed me a cracked ceramic jar. “Collect the tide’s voice,” she said, pointing to the receding waves. The beach was a mosaic of shells and driftwood, each fragment of the ocean’s story tangled with ours. I chased the water’s edge, filling the jar with bubbles that popped like soap dreams. Disappointed, I showed her the empty jar. She smiled, her wrinkles crinkling like tide pools. “Patience, little girl. The sea gives only to those who wait — it teaches us to respect its timing, as our fate is tied to its rise and fall.”
That evening, we watched bioluminescent plankton (荧光浮游生物) spark in the dark. Grandma hummed a fisherman’s tune, her voice weaving through waves that licked the shore. Suddenly, a green glow outlined my footprints — magic born from waiting, a reminder that humans and the ocean share a silent dialogue, each influencing the other.
The next morning, Grandma didn’t wake. Her jar, half-buried in sand, contained not water but dozens of tiny scrolls. Each held a tide riddle: When the moon pulls too hard, does the sea cry or laugh? The last note read: You’ve learned to hold space for wonder and to see how the ocean’s moods mirror our own.
Years later, during my college finals, I replayed that green glow in my mind. When stress threatened to overwhelm me, I became the plankton — tiny, glowing, and persistent, part of a larger ecosystem where every creature, including humans, relies on the sea’s balance. At Grandma’s cottage last summer, I buried a new jar. Inside was a pebble I’d polished for hours, smooth as the patience she taught me, a symbol of how we must nurture our bond with the ocean, just as it nurtures us.
Now, when city noise drowns my thoughts, I picture that pebble. The sea doesn’t always answer in words. It shows us that our destiny is tangled with its tides — every wave, every secret, a thread in the fabric of our shared existence.
4. In the first paragraph, the underlined word “whisper” most closely means “________”.
A. Shout loudly B. Reveal subtly C. Cover permanently D. Repeat endlessly
5. Why did the grandmother emphasize “waiting” when collecting the tide’s voice?
A. To teach patience as a way to understand the ocean’s lessons.
B. Because the sea only speaks at night.
C. To prevent the jar from breaking.
D. Because waves destroy bubbles quickly.
6. What do the tide riddles in Grandma’s jar symbolize?
A. The ocean’s unpredictable nature.
B. The need to solve complex problems.
C. The connection between human questions and the sea’s mysteries.
D. Grandma’s love for traditional folk stories.
7. How does the bioluminescent plankton scene reflect the theme?
A. It shows the ocean’s ability to create beauty independently.
B It illustrates the interdependence between humans and marine life.
C. It highlights the narrator’s fear of the unknown sea.
D. It emphasizes the importance of scientific observation.
C
Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life — including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton (浮游生物). But experts worry that this attraction could put the endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues reported on January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly enhanced by plankton’s attraction to the platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.
8. Why do whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop?
A. To admire the man-made structures. B. To get food attracted by the platforms.
C. To attract other species of marine life. D. To attack ships stopping at the place.
9. What risk can whale sharks meet when approaching oil and gas platforms?
A. Colliding with ships. B. Missing their snacks.
C. Being hunted by people. D. Being disturbed by tourists.
10. Why is it impossible to know exactly how many whale sharks are killed by ships?
A. Their bodies are quickly eaten by predators. B. Their bodies sink without leaving a trace.
C. Ship strikes are rarely reported by sailors. D. Tracking devices fail to record fatal collisions.
11. What role do the researchers hope this finding will play?
A. Promote the economy of coastal cities.
B. Improve the stability of the gas platforms.
C. Assist decision makers with structure planning.
D. Help countries to upgrade energy structures.

Not too long ago, on a cold winter night, there was a teenager who wanted more screen time and a parent who said no. The teenager was advocating for her right to scroll (刷屏) for an extra 30 minutes. The parent argued that none of her friends’ parents let them have screens after 9 o’clock. “I thought, in this family, we don’t compare ourselves with other people, Dad?” the teenager replied. The parent — who was me, by the way — just got served. Since they were young, I have told my kids not to compare themselves with other people. I have argued countless times that comparisons are the “thief of joy”.
Although my daughter didn’t win, she did help expose one of the worst pieces of advice I have ever given. In my defence, I did what we’ve all done before, which is to repeat received wisdom without exploring the fine differences. But now is the time to set the record straight, which starts with questioning the idea that all social comparison is unhealthy.
Social comparisons do, of course, often get us into emotional trouble. But they can be harnessed (利用) for our betterment if we understand how they work. The social comparisons we make — ones that lead us to feel good or bad about ourselves — are vital to our ability to thrive (成长). Science provides a guide we can use to harness the way we perform these comparisons to reduce their negative emotional impacts.
Comparing yourself with someone who is outperforming you could result in feelings of envy if you focus on the things they have and you don’t, or it can be energizing and inspiring if you use these comparisons as a source of motivation, for example, “If they can achieve that, so can I.” Comparing yourself with someone who is doing worse than you could result in fear and worry if you think about how you could fall into similar circumstances, or it can draw out feelings of gratitude and appreciation if you use that comparison to broaden your views—for example, “Wow, things could be much worse; I’m doing great.”
What I wish I taught my daughter earlier are these nuances. How we feel about ourselves rests not just on whom we compare ourselves with but also on how we think about that comparison. That’s something we all have control over.
12. How did the author feel about his daughter’s argument?
A. Excited. B. Inspired. C. Energized. D. Relieved.
13. According to the passage, which best explains why social comparisons can be beneficial?
A. They help people avoid emotional trouble completely.
B. They provide motivation when viewed from a positive angle.
C. They allow people to control others’ opinions effectively.
D. They eliminate the fear of falling behind others permanently.
14. Which of the following social comparison examples would the author most likely agree with?
A. A student who stops checking classmates’ test scores to avoid feeling bad.
B. An employee who feels discouraged after seeing a colleague’s promotion.
C. A fitness enthusiast who uses a professional athlete’s training routine as inspiration to improve their own workouts.
D. A person who frequently compares their lifestyle with influencers’ selected posts on social media.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Become a Healthy Habit
B. Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Strengthen Family Ties
C. Social Comparisons Can Get Us into Emotional Trouble
D. Social Comparisons Can Be Controlled by Science

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We sometimes take our loved ones’ concern for granted and show our worst mood to the family. During my growth, an experience in senior high school stood out in my memory.
As a taxi driver, my dad drove through chaotic streets with heavy traffic. Sometimes he had to deal with rude passengers and struggle with thin income. Despite these, he never complained. Dad was devoted to our family and cared much about us. The sunflower keychain I had given him as a Father’s Day gift in fifth grade had long lost its shine. Yet he had it attached to his leather belt everywhere he went. Every day, he simply headed out early in his worn-out uniform with two patches (补丁) and returned late with a tired but warm smile. When we joked about his “fashionable patches”, he’d laugh and say, “These are my medals of honor!”
As I entered senior high school, my world became overwhelming. Math problems danced in my head. My grades didn’t improve but even declined. School pressures skyrocketed. Even small things would set me off. Dad’s daily “How’s school today?” felt like another weight on my back. I was mean to his inquiries, even though I knew he meant well.
One day after a frustrating exam, I returned home, my backpack strap (肩带) cutting into my shoulder. Dad was calculating the taxi bills then. “Hey,” he said, with a smile on his face, “How is …”
“STOP IT!” The words exploded out of me. “You’re always in my business! Can’t you just...leave me ALONE?”
He froze. The pen he was holding rolled off the table. His face fell, as if I’d thrown cold water on him. Then he stood up slowly and walked to his room. The door shut softly—not a slam (砰地关上), just a quiet click—that somehow hurt me worse.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing.

【答案】 My Views on Stray Cats at School
Recently, there have been several stray cats on our campus, and many students feed them during breaks. While it shows students’ kindness, it also brings some problems. Feeding stray cats may attract more of them, and they could carry diseases that pose a threat to students’ health.
To solve this, I suggest setting up a feeding area outside the school. We can also organize volunteers to take the cats to the vet for regular checks. This way, we can show our love for animals while keeping the campus clean and safe.

【答案】Paragraph 1
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. The faded sunflower, once golden and bright, now mirrored Dad’s silent sacrifices. Memories flooded in: him skipping meals to pay for my textbooks, his cracked hands gripping the steering wheel, and the way he proudly called his patches “medals.” My outburst replayed in my head, sharp and ugly. Guilt gnawed at me as I realized his questions weren’t prying—they were his lifeline to my world. The quiet click of the door echoed louder than any argument.
Paragraph 2
I knocked at the door and it opened. Dad sat on the edge of his bed, the sunflower keychain trembling in his hands. “I… I’m sorry,” I choked out. He looked up, eyes weary but soft. “I just wanted to know you’re okay,” he murmured. Tears blurred my vision as I hugged him, his patched uniform rough against my cheek. “Your medals are real,” I whispered. He laughed, a warm sound that melted the tension. From then on, his “How’s school?” became a bridge, not a burden.
