教学过程
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of famous cities in China on the PPT, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an. Ask students to name these cities and briefly describe one thing they know about each city. For example, for Beijing, students may say the Great Wall; for Shanghai, they may mention the Oriental Pearl Tower. Then lead to the topic of today's lesson - two special cities along the Silk Road, Lanzhou and Dunhuang.
2. Pre - reading (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Introduction
Present the new words on the PPT one by one. For each word, show its pronunciation, spelling, and an example sentence. For example, when teaching "bridge", show a picture of a bridge and say, "Look, this is a bridge. The bridge over the Yellow River in Lanzhou is very famous. Bridge, /brɪdʒ/, b - r - i - d - g - e." Let students read the words after the teacher several times, first in unison and then individually to correct their pronunciation.
Do a simple vocabulary game. Divide the class into two groups. The teacher shows a word on the PPT, and the two groups race to pronounce and spell the word correctly. The group that answers first and correctly gets a point.
Background Knowledge Introduction
Briefly introduce the significance of the Silk Road. "The Silk Road was an important trade route that connected China with the West in ancient times. It was not only for trading silk but also for the exchange of cultures, technologies, and ideas. Along this long road, there were many important cities. Today, we are going to learn about two of them, Lanzhou and Dunhuang."
Show some pictures related to Lanzhou and Dunhuang, such as the Yellow River in Lanzhou, the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. Ask students if they know anything about these places and let them share their knowledge briefly.
3. While - reading (15 minutes)
Fast Reading
Let students read the passages about Lanzhou and Dunhuang quickly. Set two questions: "What are the two main stops introduced in the text?" and "What are the famous places in Lanzhou and Dunhuang respectively?" Give students 2 - 3 minutes to read and find the answers. Then ask several students to answer the questions.
Careful Reading
Divide students into groups of four. Let them read the passages again carefully and discuss the following questions in groups:
For the passage about Lanzhou:
What is special about the Zhongshan Bridge?
Why do people call the Yellow River the Mother River?
Why do many people take pictures at the Yellow River Mother Sculpture?
For the passage about Dunhuang:
What can you see in the Mogao Caves?
What can you do on Mingsha Mountain?
After the group discussion, ask each group to send a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class. The teacher gives comments and supplements if necessary.
Then, on the PPT, show some fill - in - the - blank exercises related to the detailed information in the passages. For example:
The Zhongshan Bridge was the first bridge over the ________ River.
You can see ancient ________ and sculptures in the Mogao Caves.
Let students do these exercises individually and then check the answers together.
4. Post - reading (10 minutes)
Role - playing
Divide the class into pairs. One student acts as a tourist and the other acts as a tour guide. They choose either Lanzhou or Dunhuang as the destination. The tour guide should introduce the famous places and interesting things in that city to the tourist using the information from the text and the learned language. The tourist can ask some questions. For example:
Tourist: Hello, I'm very interested in Lanzhou. Can you tell me something about it?
Tour Guide: Sure. Lanzhou is the capital city of Gansu. There is a very famous bridge called the Zhongshan Bridge. It was the first bridge over the Yellow River...
Give students 5 minutes to prepare and then ask several pairs to come to the front of the class to perform their dialogues.
Writing
Ask students to write a short passage about a place they have visited or a place they want to visit. They should use at least three new words and two new phrases learned in this lesson. Give students 5 minutes to write. After they finish writing, ask some students to read their passages aloud to the class. The teacher gives praise and suggestions for improvement.
5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson with the students. Review the new vocabulary, phrases, and sentence patterns. Also, emphasize the importance of understanding different cultures and historical heritages.
Homework
Ask students to make a postcard about either Lanzhou or Dunhuang. They should draw a simple picture on one side and write a short introduction of the city (about 50 - 80 words) on the other side. They can use the information from the textbook and add some of their own ideas.
Let students search for more information about other stops along the Silk Road on the Internet and share it with the class next time.
教学反思
Positive Aspects
The use of pictures and videos in the warming - up and pre - reading stages effectively attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in the topic. Students were actively involved in sharing their knowledge about the cities they knew, which created a good atmosphere for the following learning.
The group work in the while - reading and post - reading stages promoted students' cooperation and communication skills. Students actively discussed in groups and were eager to share their ideas with the class, which improved their understanding of the text and language application ability.
Areas for Improvement
In the vocabulary teaching part, although the game was helpful for students to remember words, some students still had difficulty in using the words correctly in sentences. In the future, more sentence - making exercises can be added to strengthen students' understanding and application of vocabulary.
During the role - playing activity, some students were a bit shy and did not perform very actively. Next time, more encouragement and guidance can be given before the activity to help these students overcome their shyness and participate more actively.
