Most people can’t live to 100. Those who do live so long can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old-they keep going and going! There is a great-great-grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party. she decided to go paragliding (滑翔伞运动) — an idea she got from her 75-year-old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor Kevin Hintze, and jumped down fearlessly from the sky near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, Mary encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild” and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she went on all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet. For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 feet Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100-year-old British woman. What an amazing lady!

27.Where is the text likely to appear?
A.A news report. B.An advertisement.
C.A novel. D.A science report.

There are special moments in history when the world throws up a torrent of genius. Consider how, in a single century, the world saw Descartes, Leibniz, and Newton, not to mention Shakespeare, Milton, and Bach. Or consider how, in one generation, someone could hypothetically have met Bismarck, Queen Victoria, Marie Curie, and Edison.
But all of this pales in comparison to what German philosopher Karl Jaspers called the “Axial Age”. It’s here that we find the very origins of why we think the way we do today.
Modern humans have been around for roughly 250,000 years, and we’ve lived in complex societies for at least 6,000 years. Then, within a span of merely six centuries, there was a huge explosion of thought. From roughly 800 BC to 200 BC, all of the major civilizations produced incredible people with incredible ideas.
In Greece, we saw the likes of Socrates, Archimedes, Hippocrates, Plato, and Aristotle. In the Middle East, we got Jewish prophets like Isiah and Ezekiel, as well as Zoroaster in Persia. In India, we got the Buddha and the writing of the Hindu Upanishads. And in China, Confucianism and Daoism came into their own, as well as the famous Sun Tzu.
Seen up close, these thinkers can seem about as different as chalk and cheese. What could Lao Tzu’s Dao and Aristotle’s Eudaimonia have in common? How are Yahweh and Brahman similar? For Jaspers, when you zoom out a bit and see these thinkers as a whole, there are remarkable commonalities to be found.
The greatest of these is the move toward what’s called “universalism”. Universal truths, universal religion, and universal morals. It’s the idea that there are certain values and rules that ought to apply to everyone, everywhere, no matter the circumstances.
The Axial Age was an era where empires expanded outwards to become huge, both in terms of size and population. It was a time of the Persian and Carthaginian empires, the Roman Republic, and the Zhou Dynasty. This means several important things happened.
28.What do the underlined words “pales in comparison” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Becomes more obvious. B.Becomes less important.
C.Becomes less interesting. D.Becomes more influential.
29.What was the Axial Age mainly about?
A.Great thoughts. B.Political campaigns.
C.Scientific achievements. D.Geographic discoveries.
30.What does Jaspers try to stress about these great thinkers?
A.The similarity of their ideas. B.The difference between them.
C.The diversity of their thoughts. D.The significance of their contributions.
31.What will the author continue talking about in the paragraphs that follow?
A.The problems with the Axial Age. B.The great influence of the Axial Age.
C.The historical background of the Axial Age. D.The representative figures of the Axial Age.
D
I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right?
I’m going to Scotland this year, and three different people told me I must watch “Outlander” before I go, which is like “Game of Thrones” for fans of romance novels. I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. It was dark outside, and I felt ashamed. I had spent half a day on the couch. Research for Scotland? Not exactly.
A few days later I had a library book due: The National Book Award winner The Friend, by Sigrid Nunez. I needed to finish it, so I read the last half straight through. I was absorbed in Nunez’s New York City, worrying about the heroin’s career and her future. I finished the book with tears in my eyes and stood up feeling, well, great.
I had wasted another four hours on my couch. I hadn’t eaten as much junk food because I needed my hands free — and not sticky — so I could turn pages and return the book to the library relatively clean, but I hadn’t moved and once again it was dark outside. Why did I feel so much better and guilt-free?
All the research says reading a book is good for you. It reduces stress, promotes comprehension and imagination, relieves depression, helps you sleep and may contribute to preventing Alzheimer’s (阿尔兹海默症). The act of physically turning a page creates a momentary pause for understanding to sink in. Our brains have to work to translate the black squiggles (弯弯曲曲的线条) on the page into words and then interpret the meaning and intent (意图) of those words. When a character is described as tall with brown hair, a reader creates her own picture. TV takes all that imagination away. But there’s a lot of good TV now. I’d like to say the answer to TV versus books must be, as Aristotle said, “Moderation in all things,” though he never had a television or a computer and had to read his scrolls by candlelight. I agree that too much television is bad for you. I know I feel better if I read, but it won’t stop me from watching too: My second DVD of “Outlander” has just arrived, and as soon as I get this essay done, the rest of my day is free.
32.By “I always nod and agree” (paragraph 1), the author implies that ______ .
A.she doesn’t think highly of TV either
B.she believes those who say they don’t watch TV
C.she should be polite to get the conversation to go on
D.she is not willing to admit that she watches television
33.The phrase “back to back” (paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to “ ______ ”.
A.from morning till night B.one after another without a break
C.looking at the opposite direction D.leaning against the back of the couch
34.The author felt better after reading The Friend than watching “Outlander”, most probably because ______ .
A.she didn’t feel hungry for any snacks
B.the TV series got her to cancel her trip to Scotland
C.the television series was no more attractive than the book
D.she regarded reading as more rewarding than watching TV
35.What can be concluded from all the research introduced in paragraph 5?
A.Reading is active while watching TV is passive.
B.Reading involves physical exercises while watching TV doesn’t.
C.Reading stimulates the brain to concentrate while watching TV doesn’t.
D.Reading is good for one’s mental health while watching TV is bad for it.

Want a relaxing but fun challenge at home? 36 Puzzles have been around for more than 250 years and the challenge of working out where each piece goes and carefully recreating the scene on the box lid can keep you busy for hours, days or even weeks.
Puzzles come in a huge range of sizes and difficulty levels. For beginners, a 100-piece puzzle is usually a good starting point. 37 Try grouping pieces with the same colors or design because they will probably go in the same area once the puzzle takes shape.
38 Those pieces are easier to find because they have a straight side. Stay patient as you search through and try to make it fit together. You may not find any connecting pieces for ages but then several may suddenly appear.
For a real test, puzzles that have 1, 000 pieces or more are a tough task and it’s best to complete them with friends or family if you can. Choosing a scene that interests you, such as a favourite film, sport or location, can help keep you interested and determined to work to the final piece. You can get fun educational puzzles, too. 39
Some of the best places to pick up puzzles are charity shops. They’re often on sale for less than £5. Once you have completed a puzzle, it’s nice to exchange it with a friend. 40 You just upload an image, such as a family scene, and they will make a puzzle from it and post it to you. It makes lovely and unusual present.
A.So others can have a go.
B.Some companies make personalized puzzles.
C.It can get you used to sorting out how the shapes, patterns and colors go together.
D.However, a good start doesn’t always lead to a good result.
E.For example, you may try a map of the world or historical timelines.
F.A good puzzle is a better choice.
G.Most people like to start by getting the four edges of a puzzle laid out.

It was a cold winter day.
The school was buzzing with excitement for the upcoming Reading Festival. Tom, a passionate English teacher, was determined to make this year’s festival the best yet. His co-worker, Rose, a dedicated librarian, shared his enthusiasm. They planned to organize a series of activities to promote reading and learning among the students.
“Rose, what do you think about adding a book exchange to the festival?” Tom asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
“That’s a great idea, Tom!” Rose replied. “We can also have a storytelling session and a quiz competition.”
However, they faced a significant challenge. Some students were not interested in reading, especially during the winter when they preferred to stay indoors and play video games.
“We need to think of something that will really grab their attention,” Tom said, scratching his head.
“How about a treasure hunt game?” Rose suggested. “We can hide clues in books, and each clue leads to the next. The final clue will reveal the location of a special prize.”
“Yes, we will create a treasure hunt game where clues are hidden in books,” said Tom.
They hoped this would spark the students’ curiosity and encourage them to explore the library.
The day of the Reading Festival arrived, and the school was decorated with colorful banners and posters promoting the joy of reading. Tom introduced the treasure hunt to the students, encouraging, “Remember, the more you read, the more clues you’ll find!”
“Let’s see who can uncover the mystery of the special prize!” Rose added, her voice filled with excitement.

The book exchange and storytelling session attracted many students, but the treasure hunt became the highlight.

第一节
Dear Chris,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to share with you an enlightening experience I had at our school’s Psychology Club event called “Know Yourself” last week.
The event started with self-assessment questionnaires. I then engaged in emotion management training, which equipped me with the skills to recognize, express, and regulate my emotions effectively. I found the experience incredibly inspiring, as not only did it facilitate my deeper understanding of myself but it also contributed to better emotional resilience.
Overall, this is a rewarding activity that motivates me to embrace my uniqueness. Have you attended any similar activities recently? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Lily was one of those who were interested in the treasure hunt. She decided to give it a try. As she read the books, she discovered a world of knowledge and imagination she had never known before. Each book she read not only brought her closer to the prize but also enriched her mind and expanded her horizons. However, the competition was fierce. She had to take her time to read and understand each book. Her patience and dedication paid off, and she was the first to reach the final clue.
Tom and Rose awarded her the prize in front of the entire school. Holding a golden bookmark and a set of classic novels, Lily beamed with pride. “Reading opens doors to endless adventures,” she shared, her voice trembling with excitement. The students cheered, their earlier reluctance replaced by curiosity. Tom and Rose exchanged a satisfied glance — their plan had worked. By blending fun with learning, they had ignited a passion for books in many hearts. The festival ended, but the love for reading it sparked would last far beyond that winter day.

【答案】18.C 19.A 20.B
【原文】Hello, everyone. Welcome to my channel FM 101.3. I am Tim Woods. Today I’ll share some tips on how to make friends. Firstly, if you want to make friends with someone you meet, you should show an interest in them and make them want to get to know you. Next, instead of complaining, start with a positive topic like your local sports team’s performance if you and that person both like sports. Moreover, you can talk about your neighborhood. People often like to talk about where they live and the things they love to do in that area, so if you live in the same neighborhood, you can build friendships through shared interests or activities. Most importantly, you can talk about places where you used to live, and then the conversation can go on. Last but not least, if you have mutual friends, talk about how you met that friend. Then you can share some funny stories about the person you both know.

C
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中“Consider how, in a single century, the world saw Descartes, Leibniz, and Newton, not to mention Shakespeare, Milton, and Bach. Or consider how, in one generation, someone could hypothetically have met Bismarck, Queen Victoria, Marie Curie, and Edison.(想想看,在短短一个世纪里,世界见证了笛卡尔、莱布尼茨和牛顿的诞生,更不用说莎士比亚、弥尔顿和巴赫了。或者想想看,在一代人的时间里,理论上一个人有可能见到俾斯麦、维多利亚女王、玛丽·居里和爱迪生。)”可知,在短短一世纪中可以见到诸多伟大的人物。根据划线词所在句子“But all of this pales in comparison to what German philosopher Karl Jaspers called the “Axial Age”(但所有这一切与德国哲学家卡尔·雅斯贝尔斯所称的“轴心时代”相比都……。)”以及下文“ It’s here that we find the very origins of why we think the way we do today.(正是在这里,我们找到了我们如今思维方式的真正起源。)”
根据第三段中“Then, within a span of merely six centuries, there was a huge explosion of thought. From roughly 800 BC to 200 BC, all of the major civilizations produced incredible people with incredible ideas.(然后,在仅仅六个世纪的时间里,思想发生了巨大的爆发。从大约公元前800年到公元前200年,所有主要文明都涌现出了拥有非凡思想的不凡人物。)”可知,“轴心时代”的最大特点是诞生了很多伟大先哲以及他们的杰出思想。故选A。
30.细节理解题。根据第五段“Seen up close, these thinkers can seem about as different as chalk and cheese. What could Lao Tzu's Dao and Aristotle's Eudaimonia have in common? How are Yahweh and Brahman similar? For Jaspers, when you zoom out a bit and see these thinkers as a whole, there are remarkable commonalities to be found. (从近距离看,这些思想家的思想似乎大相径庭。老子的“道”和亚里士多德的“幸福观”有什么共同之处?耶和华和梵天有何相似之处?对于雅斯贝尔斯来说,当你稍微拉远一点距离,把这些思想家看作一个整体时,就会发现它们有显著的共同之处。)”可知,雅斯贝尔斯试图强调这些伟大思想家之间的相似性。故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“The Axial Age was an era where empires expanded outwards to become huge, both in terms of size and population. It was a time of the Persian and Carthaginian empires, the Roman Republic, and the Zhou Dynasty. This means several important things happened. (轴心时代是一个帝国在面积和人口上都向外扩张成为巨大帝国的时代。这是波斯帝国、迦太基帝国、罗马共和国和周朝的时代。这意味着发生了几件重要的事情。)”可知,本段介绍了轴心时代的历史背景,并暗示接下来将讲述这个时代的重要事件。因此,可以推断出作者接下来将继续讲述轴心时代的历史背景。选项C“The historical background of the Axial Age.(轴心时代的历史背景)”符合题意。故选C。
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.D 35.A
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了阅读与看电视的不同体验及对人的影响。
32.细节理解题。根据第一段中“I know people who say they don’t watch television, and I always nod and agree. Reading requires intelligence, and television is merely entertainment, right?(我知道有些人说他们不看电视,我总是点头表示同意。阅读需要智力,而电视仅仅是娱乐,对吗?)”可知,作者通过“总是点头同意”暗示自己也不看好电视。故选A。
33.词句猜测题。根据第二段中“I watched the first four-hour-long episodes back to back. When I stood up from the couch I felt sick, and it wasn’t just the cookies, popcorn and peanut butter sandwiches I’d had without noticing. TV takes all that imagination away.(我们的大脑必须努力将页面上的黑色曲线翻译成单词,然后解释这些单词的含义和意图。当一个角色被描述为棕色头发的高个子时,读者会自己想象出她的样子。电视把所有的想象力都带走了)”可知,从第五段介绍的所有研究中可以得出:阅读是主动的,而看电视是被动的。故选A。

Dear Chris,
I hope this letter finds you well.
Yours,
