Despite the fact that motherhood has not been easy, Maxi Aubi believes that her son, Gianluca, has taught her much.
Gianluca was born 13 years ago with Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disease. Maxi was never afraid about the fact that she did not know what this condition was about. She had to get out there and face the music. “When he was a newborn baby, he used to cry all day long. He wouldn’t eat or sleep. It was an endless cycle. We ran some tests and doctors told us his progress depended on us. But it was evident that something was wrong with him. So we visited several doctors and ran some other tests until he was five,” she explains.
Despite all of this, Maxi designed a treatment plan for Gianluca. It did not matter what he was suffering from; she believed love was the “medicine” that could heal him. She formed a group of ten people of different ages outside her family who were willing to help Gianluca’s development. These people would come to her house in shifts from 9 AM to 7 PM with only one goal: to show Gianluca that he could achieve whatever he wanted. “We started encouraging him with games. During those two or three years, he learnt how to walk and he made huge progress,” she remembers.
Learning about her child’s diagnosis was a starting point for Maxi. To help relieve the pain of parents whose children suffered from the same condition, she created the Association for Parents coping with Angelman Syndrome (APSA) which currently has about a hundred families. Living with these children is very enriching. This is why the association is not only working to provide support and guidance for the families of children with this condition; it also wants to tell people that they can also learn from these children. “We want them to come and experience what we learnt from our children,” she says.

A. He taught his mother a lot about Angelman Syndrome.
B. He liked playing games with people.

7. According to the text, the ten people in the group ________.

Newly released findings published in the Journal of Sleep Research have found that acute (急性的) illnesses such as colds and flu are more common among healthy teenagers who get less sleep at night. In addition, the regularity of teens’ sleep schedules has been found to influence their health. The study, titled, Sleep Patterns Are Associated With Common Illness in Teenagers, was led by Kathryn Orzech, Ph.D., of the Bradley Hospital Sleep Research Laboratory.
Orzech and her team compared three things between longer and shorter sleepers: number of illness bouts (发作), illness durations (持续时间) and school absences related to illness. The team found that bouts and durations of illness decreased with longer sleep for both male and female high school students. Longer sleep also reduced school absences caused by illness. There were sex differences as well, with males reporting fewer illness bouts than females, even with similar sleep durations.
Orzech’s team analyzed total sleep time in teens for about two weeks. This analysis suggested that irregular sleep timing across week nights and weekends (very little sleep during the week and “catching up” on sleep during the weekend) and a preference for work late in the evening can both contribute to illness bouts.
“Our study collected sleep and illness data among teenagers who were living their normal lives in school instead of laboratory experiments. So we can show what happens in real life.”
“We showed that there are short-term results, like more acute illness among shorter-sleeping teenagers, that don’t require waiting months, years or decades to show up,” Orzech continued. “Yes, poor sleep is linked to obesity, depression, and so on, but for a teenager, staying healthy for the dance next week, or the game on Thursday, may be more important. The message from this study is clear: sleep more, and more regularly; get sick less.”
8. If a student got enough sleep at night, he/she ________.
A. would be more likely to get colds or flu
B. would spend less time recovering from illness
C. would find his or her health badly affected
D. might ask for sick leave more often than others
9. We can infer that with similar sleep time, ________ have more possibility of catching a cold.
A. males, rather than females
B. students who get regular sleep
C. students who prefer to study late at night
D. students who sleep during the daytime
10. According to Kathryn Orzech, what may be more important for teenagers?
A. Obesity caused by poor sleep.
B. A bad mood as a result of poor sleep.
C. A healthy body for activities.
D. Lack of sleep during the weekend.
11. What can we learn from the text?
A. Acute illness comes with poor sleep.
B. Sleep schedules are connected to teenagers’ health.
C. Oversleeping during the weekend can lead to illness.
D. The data from laboratory experiments can show what happens in real life.
D
Tears can ruin make-up, bring conversation to a stop, and give you a runny nose. They can leave you embarrassed and without energy. However, crying is a fact of life, and tears are very useful. Even when you’re not crying, your eyes produce tears. They create a film (薄膜) over the eyes’ surface. This film contains a substance that protects your eyes against infection.
Tears relieve stress, but we tend to fight them for all sorts of reasons. “People worry about showing their emotions. They’re afraid that once they lose control, they’ll never get it back,” explains psychologist Dorothy Rowe. “As children we were sometimes punished for shedding tears or expressing anger. As adults we still fear the consequences of showing emotions.”
Almost any emotion — good or bad, happy or sad — can cause tears. Crying is a way that we release built-up emotions. Tears help you when you feel you are ready to explode because of very strong feelings. It may explain why people who are afraid to cry often suffer more heart attacks than people who cry more freely.
When some people become very stressed, however, they can’t cry. They may be feeling shock, anger, fear, or grief, but they repress (抑制) the emotion. “Everyone has the need to cry,” says Professor Vera Diamond. Sometimes in therapy sessions, patients participate in crying exercises. They practice crying so that they can get used to expressing the emotion. Diamond says it’s best to cry in safe, private places, like under the bedcovers or in the car. That’s because many people get uncomfortable when others cry in front of them. In fact, they may be repressing their own need to cry.
In certain situations, such as at work, tears are not appropriate. It’s good to hold back tears during a tense business discussion. “But once you are safely behind closed doors, don’t just cry,” Diamond says. She suggests that you act out the whole situation again and be as noisy and angry as you like. It will help you feel better. “And,” she adds, “once your tears have released the stress, you can begin to think of logical ways to deal with the problem.”
Tears are a sign of our ability to feel. You should never be afraid to cry.
12 Crying can help you ________.
A. feel energetic B. release tension
C. reduce fear D. escape from reality
13. According to Vera Diamond, crying from time to time should be ________.
A. valued B. forgiven
C. avoided D. practiced
14. What are you expected to do in a tense business discussion?
A. Control your tears.
B. Be brave to express your emotions.
C. Release your stress with tears.
D. Create a comfortable atmosphere.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to release stress.
B. The value of tears.
C. Ways to repress emotions in public.
D. How to express emotions.

When I was about three years old and my sister was six, we lived in a high-rise apartment building. As usual, my mom was helping my sister with her maths homework.
I was being naughty in general, so my mom shut me in another room to let me calm down. Her idea was that I must quietly watch TV or entertain myself somehow while she could finish teaching my sister without any distractions.
But I couldn’t be quiet. Whatever things I could get my hands on, I quickly began to throw them out of the window. I couldn’t tell the value of them. Out went my mom’s expensive watch, various silver forks, the week’s mail, the TV remote…
When my mom let me out later, I carried on with whatever it was that three-year-olds did, not telling anyone anything, except to my big sister, who was trustworthy, or so I thought.
A few hours later, my dad was on his way home from work. As he neared our block, he noticed some familiar-looking things lying around on the grass.
As he came closer, he found mail addressed to him, so he picked it up. A little further, and, “Oh! Aren’t those our cups?” And finally, “Wait a minute!! Isn’t that our TV remote?!”
Fearing the worst, he hurried upstairs, only to see all of us carrying on with business as usual. Puzzled, he asked my mom what had happened, and why all of our belongings were lying around outside. She had no clue, and I, of course, pretended to be an innocent angel.
My sister’s laughter gave everything away. I had told her everything earlier and the poor girl was now giving away my secret!

12. Crying can help you ________.
A. feel energetic B. release tension
C reduce fear D. escape from reality
13. According to Vera Diamond, crying from time to time should be ________.
A. valued B. forgiven
C. avoided D. practiced
14. What are you expected to do in a tense business discussion?
A. Control your tears.
B. Be brave to express your emotions.
C. Release your stress with tears.

【答案】范文:
Good communication is the cornerstone of any relationship. But is texting the best way to communicate? The answer is “No”.
Texting hides emotions. No one can hear emotion in your voice. In matters of the heart, letting your fingers do the talking can cause more harm than good.
We may make embarrassing mistakes when texting on our phones, such as sending messages to the wrong people.
However, we can delay answering questions until we think out a good answer on our phones. While in face-to-face situations, we need to give an immediate response, otherwise it would be thought rude.
As far as I am concerned, text messaging is unavoidable, but it is advisable to mix it up with some face-to-face interactions.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Whatever things I could get my hands on I quickly began to throw them out of the window.
I had told her everything earlier, and the poor girl was now giving away my secret!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2: The best part of the whole incident was that my parents just laughed it all off.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文:
I was very afraid that I would be punished. So I jumped in to give my own explanation, which, of course, seemed reasonable. I said, “While I was just minding my own business in the room, the TV remote grew its own wings and just flew out! It flew just right in front of my own eyes!” “Seeing it fly out, the other things, the forks, the mail and my mother’s watch, all followed it,” I continued my stupid explanation.
The best part of the whole incident was that my parents just laughed it all off. Maybe they thought it was hard to think of a way to punish an innocent three-year-old boy. They just tried their best to find all the things that I had thrown on the grass out. To this day, we all can’t help bursting into laughter when recalling that thing. We never did find that watch though.
