Unit 4 Changing and Growing-Wrapping up the Topic-Project
This project in Unit 4 of the Ren’ai Science Edition (2024) English textbook for Grade 8 focuses on the theme of "Changing and Growing". Students are required to integrate the language knowledge and skills they have learned in this unit to complete a project task. The project encourages students to explore the changes in their own lives, such as physical, emotional, and social changes during adolescence. It also involves researching and presenting information about the growth and development of plants or animals, which helps students deepen their understanding of the concept of "changing and growing" from different perspectives. Through this project, students will practice various language skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as critical thinking and cooperation abilities.

教学过程
A. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show some pictures of a baby growing into an adult, a seed growing into a plant, and a caterpillar turning into a butterfly on the PPT.
Ask students: "What can you see from these pictures? How do you feel about these changes?"
Invite several students to share their ideas, and then lead in the topic of today's project - exploring the changes in our lives and the growth of living things.
B. Knowledge Review (8 minutes)
Vocabulary review
Flash some key words on the screen, and ask students to read them aloud and explain their meanings in English if possible.
Play a vocabulary game, such as "vocabulary bingo". Prepare a bingo card with the key words for each student. Read out the definitions or example sentences, and students mark the corresponding words on their cards. The first one to get a bingo (a row, column, or diagonal of marked words) wins.
Grammar review
Use some simple sentences on the PPT to review the present perfect tense and the simple past tense. For example:
"I have learned a lot of English words this semester." (present perfect tense)
"I visited the zoo last weekend." (simple past tense)
Ask students to analyze the differences in meaning and usage between the two tenses in these sentences. Then, give them some more sentences and let them identify the tenses.
C. Project Introduction (7 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 4 - 5.
Present the project task: Each group needs to choose one aspect of "changing and growing", such as the physical and emotional changes of students in adolescence, the growth process of a specific plant or animal, or the social changes in the community in recent years. Then, make a poster and a short oral presentation about it.
Provide some resources for students, such as relevant books in the school library, online articles, and videos. Also, give them a project checklist and a rubric to clarify the requirements and evaluation criteria.
Explain the time arrangement: Today in class, they will plan and start to collect information. The poster and oral presentation will be due in the next class.
D. Group Work (15 minutes)
In their groups, students discuss and decide on the specific topic they want to explore.
They start to collect information from the provided resources. They can take notes, print out relevant pictures, or copy important sentences.
While students are working, the teacher walks around the classroom, providing guidance and answering their questions. For example, if a group has trouble finding information, the teacher can suggest some useful websites or books; if there are conflicts in the group discussion, the teacher can help them resolve the issues and promote effective communication.
E. Summary and Homework Assignment (10 minutes)
Each group briefly reports on their progress so far.
Summarize the key points of today's class, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in group work and the correct use of language knowledge in the project.
Assign homework:
Each group continues to complete the poster and practice the oral presentation at home.
Individually, students write a short reflection on what they have learned and what difficulties they have encountered in today's group work.
教学反思
Successes
The lead - in part with pictures effectively attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in the topic, which smoothly led to the following teaching content.
The vocabulary and grammar review in a game - based and practical sentence - based way helped students review the knowledge in an active and interesting way, laying a good foundation for the project implementation.
The group work provided students with a platform to practice their communication and cooperation skills. Most groups actively discussed and started to collect information, showing a high level of enthusiasm.
Deficiencies
In the group work, some students were too dominant, while some were relatively passive, not fully participating in the discussion and information collection. The teacher may not have paid enough attention to these individual differences and failed to guide every student to actively engage.
The time for group work was a bit tight. Some groups did not have enough time to fully discuss and plan their projects, which may affect the quality of their final products.
Improvement Measures
In future group work, before starting, clearly define the roles of each group member, such as a leader, a note - taker, a researcher, etc., to ensure that every student has specific responsibilities and actively participates.
When arranging group work time, make a more reasonable estimate and allocate more time for students to fully discuss and plan, or consider allowing students to start some of the work in advance, such as collecting information after class before the project class.
