阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you’ll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It’s also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three-day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere-hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters-just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven’t been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you’ve probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor (港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor-side markets. Don’t leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It’s delicious.
21.Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta?
A.In the Ludlow Castle. B.In the Foodie Center of England.
C.In the Hereford Cathedral. D.In the Black and White House Museum.
22.What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center?
A.It’s situated near a big island. B.It’s almost surrounded by water.
C.It’s known for its flower festival. D.It’s easily accessible from London.
23.What does the author suggest visitors do in Mevagissey?
A.Try the Cornish pie. B.Watch a British TV show.
C.Go fishing in the sea. D.Take pictures of the harbor.

While English is getting more important in our schools, Chinese has become popular among foreign kids. But Chinese can be more difficult to learn. At least 16-year-old Piao Chenglong thinks so. “English is easier for me. Chinese characters (汉字) have too many strokes (笔画),” said Piao. “But I want to learn it. I want to study at Beijing University when I grow up.” Piao is from Korea. He came to China in 2008.
In Korea, there are more than 300, 000 Chinese learners like Piao. Some Korean students begin to learn to write the language on their first day at school. To help students learn Chinese, Korea holds speaking competitions for high school students every year.
Chinese isn’t just popular in Korea. People from all the world want to learn it. The Ministry of Education of China says that nearly 130 million people from 85 countries are learning Chinese. This number will be increasing to 800 million in the coming years.
In America, Chinese is the second most popular foreign language after Spanish. Some American middle schools have Chinese classes. Students learn to make jiaozi and tie Chinese knots (中国结). Some even try to write and draw in the Chinese way!
People want to learn Chinese because China is becoming such an important country. Foreign countries want to understand China better to help them with business. The Chinese government is also helping the world learn Chinese. It has sent more than 200 Chinese teachers to more than 60 countries in the world. Many more Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) will be set up in the world. These institutes will teach Chinese to foreign students.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects about 10% of adults in the United States. It is characterized by difficulty with falling asleep, or waking up too early, at least three times per week for a period of three months or more. If you happen to struggle with insomnia, you can try a weighted metal chain blanket (毯子), one that might sound a little strange but effective.
A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.
They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.
The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It’s almost like a baby’s wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you’re anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.
“While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness,” says the lead researcher.
28.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By giving an example. B.By raising a question.
C.By analyzing causes. D.By describing symptoms.
29.What does paragraph 2 focus on concerning the research?
A.Its background. B.Its process. C.Its findings. D.Its limitations.
30.Why can a weighted metal chain blanket promise a better sleep?
A.Its pressure calms people down. B.Its material reduces people’s anxiety.
C.It monitors people’s heart rate. D.It gives off comforting chemicals.
31.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the research?
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
D
Back in 2018, scientists at Duke University discovered that each time our eyes move, our ears make a squeaking (吱吱声) noise, which is hard or unable to hear. Now, the researchers have developed a method of telling where a person is looking by analyzing those sounds. Although we don’t consciously hear the noises, they can be picked up by a highly sensitive microphone placed in the ear canal.
Lead scientist Professor Jennifer Groh believes that they may occur as eye movements trigger the brain to contract either the middle ear muscles or the hair cells — doing the former helps dampen loud noises, while doing the latter amplifies (放大) quiet ones. This arrangement could help us make sense of our surroundings, by automatically adjusting the sensitivity of our hearing based on what we’re looking at.
In a recent experiment, Groh’s team and Professor Christopher Shera from the University of Southern California recruited 16 adults, all with good vision and hearing, to take a simple test. The volunteers started by visually tracking the movements of a green dot on a computer screen, without moving their heads. As they did so, an eye-tracking camera recorded the direction of their gaze, while microphones in their ear canals recorded their ear sounds.
When the eye video and ear audio recordings were subsequently cross-referenced, it was found that eye movements in specific directions produced specific types of ear noises. The scientists were thus able to tell where a participant’s gaze was focused, simply by identifying what sort of noise “signature” their ears were making. It was also possible to do the opposite — the researchers could accurately tell what sort of sounds the volunteers’ ears were making, by tracking the direction of their gaze. It is hoped that the team’s findings will contribute to a better understanding of human perception (感知), possibly leading to more accurate and informative hearing tests.
“If each part of the ear contributes individual rules for the eardrum signal, then they could be used as a type of clinical tool to assess which part of the anatomy in the ear is malfunctioning,” said Stephanie Lovich, one of the lead authors of the paper and a graduate student in psychology& neuroscience at Duke.
32.Why do the ear noises occur according to Professor Jennifer Groh?
A.Some noises echo in the ear canal occasionally.
B.The head moves too quickly along with the ears.
C.A highly sensitive microphone usually causes the noises.
D.The brain contracts muscles or hair cells with eye movements.
33.What potential outcome do the researchers anticipate from their findings?
A.Creating a new type of hearing aid.
B.Enhancing the design of microphones.
C.Understanding human perception better.
D.Replacing traditional vision tests with new technology.
34.What does Stephanie Lovich think of these findings?
A.Complex. B.Promising.
C.Faulty. D.Primitive.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.The human perception is complex.
B.Eye movements lead to brain responses.
C.Scientists know what your eyes talk to your ears.
D.The evolution of hearing is discovered by scientists.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Smile: It Is Good For You
Research reveals that showing you’re happy can enhance both physical and mental health. And here is why.
Smiling is a stress reliever. A University of Kansas study found that participants who were asked to smile during stressful tasks had lower heart rates during stress recovery. So it seems even forcing yourself to look happy helps to manage tricky situations.
Smiling may lower blood pressure. The benefits of smile go beyond stress reduction. 36 Another research has shown that blood pressure doesn’t rise when people are exposed to humour.
Smiling boosts immunity. A smile releases certain hormones in the brain, including serotonin, which is associated with an improvement in immune function. Depression, meanwhile, can weaken your immune system. 37
A smile can reduce your pain. Being amused also prompts the release of endorphins (内啡肽) in the brain. 38 In one study, participants who smiled while being injected reported 40 percent less pain.
39 It seems smiling really can boost your mood, rather than simply being a response to feeling happy. A 2022 study of 3,878 participants in 19 countries found people’s happiness rating was higher when they smiled.
Of course, smiling endears you to others and helps you to connect with them. 40 Give yourself cues to remind you to smile — when you see someone laughing or you’re making a cup of tea — or put a note on your phone as a reminder. Think of something pleasurable, such as a favourite person, place or memory when you smile. You will harvest the rewards of your continuous efforts.
A.Looking happy encourages positivity.
B.Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers.
C.Those who have the broadest smile live longer.
D.If you practise enough, it’ll become second nature.
E.So, it makes sense to smile more if you want to stay well.
F.It is also likely to have a knock-on effect on blood pressure.
G.It not only releases endorphins but also boosts your immune system.

My great-grandfather my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I don’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

第二节 (满分25分)
This time I would not hide my desire any more. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how I felt. I told him that I wanted to go to a college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer. After saying this, I waited nervously for his reaction. To my surprise, he approved my request, and he told me he was moved by my perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college.
At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I, as “Best Pilot”, had to deliver a speech. In my speech, I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream. Faced with difficulties, I took a path that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice. I also owed my success to my father’s support. Without his understanding, I couldn’t have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech, I spotted my father’s watery eyes, and said, “Dad, I made it!” His face lit up with pride.

阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】(One possible version)
