In 2013, Deegan was trying to take control of her life after winning the fight against drinking. She did quit, but she was having difficulty reconnecting with people. Even looking someone in the eyes proved to be difficult. “I was sort of like a shell of a person and just didn’t really have many life skills or self-confidence,” Deegan said.
However, baking was something that always brought her joy as a child. One day while helping out in the neighborhood, Deegan picked up a handheld mixer and started baking. “My life was just out of control, but baking is such a controlled thing, where if you take the right steps and follow the directions, you’ll get a pretty exact result,” she said.
Deegan started bringing her homemade baked cookies to people’s homes, which helped her reconnect with people. “Feeding people is such a universal love language,” she said. However, she was still trying to figure out how to find a career at 27 years old. She had no real work experience and she couldn’t put ‘quit drinking’ ” on her resume.
Deegan’s life shifted in 2015. Encouraged by her friends, she challenged herself to see if she could sell just one pie. She sold dozens! She began baking out of her tiny apartment and eventually launched an official business in 2017. She spent four years developing a pie crust cookie recipe, which has since become the bread and butter of her business. “People have been walking, running and lining up to get cookies, and it’s just been so magical seeing that,” she said.
When she needs more help, Deegan says she looks for anyone who is just excited to work, even if they don’t have any experience. After her own struggle, she realized that the desire to work was better than having a certain skill set. And she became a second-chance employer, hiring women out of prison or the shelter system. “You just have to walk through the door and be ready, willing and able and excited to show up and work and you’ve got a job,” Deegan told the reporter.
4. What was Deegan mainly struggling with in 2013?
A. Emotion management.
B. Interpersonal relationship.
C. Work-life balance.
D. Alcohol addiction.
5. What prepared Deegan for her bakery business?
A. Working previously in the baking industry. B. Seeing people running to get cookies.
C Wanting desperately to gain total control. D. Offering baked food out of goodwill.
6. According to paragraph 4 and 5, what is special about Deegan and her business?
A. She achieved success through baking.
B. She was ambitious about her business.
C. She has an open-door employment policy.
D. She only hired inexperienced workers.
7. Which of the following best describes Deegan?
A. Creative and smart.
B. Persistent and receptive.
C. Honest and optimistic.
D. Kind and easy-going.
B 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第三段“Deegan started bringing her homemade baked cookies to people’s homes, which helped her reconnect with people. ‘Feeding people is such a universal love language, ’ she said. (迪根开始把她自制的饼干带到人们的家里,这帮助她与人们重新建立联系。她说:‘喂饱人们是一种普世的爱的语言。’)”可知,Deegan 认为给人送食物能表达爱,所以她经常给别人送上自己做的饼干;第四段“Deegan’s life shifted in 2015. Encouraged by her friends, she challenged herself to see if she could sell just one pie. She sold dozens! She began baking out of her tiny apartment and eventually launched an official business in 2017. (迪根的生活在2015年发生了改变。在朋友们的鼓励下,她挑战自己,看能不能卖掉一个派。她卖了几十个!她开始在自己的小公寓里烘焙,并最终在2017年推出了正式业务。)”可知,也正是这种出于好意的为他人提供烘焙食品的行为,为后来Deegan 烘焙店生意奠定了基础,故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“In 2013, Deegan was trying to take control of her life after winning the fight against drinking. She did quit, but she was having difficulty reconnecting with people. (2013年,迪根在与酗酒的斗争中获胜后,试图控制自己的生活。她确实戒了酒,但她很难与人重新建立联系)”可知,迪根以前是一个嗜酒之人,但已戒了;最后一段中“When she needs more help, Deegan says she looks for anyone who is just excited to work, even if they don't have any experience. After her own struggle, she realized that the desire to work was better than having a certain skill set. And she became a second-chance employer, hiring women out of prison or the shelter system. Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy. But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.
“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘techno fossil’, because it is incredibly durable, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils. “So wherever those future civilizations dig, they are going to find plastic.”
Clothes will also make an abrupt entry into humanity’s fossil record. Today, the world’s growing population often wears mass-produced synthetic (合成的) clothing that are rapidly dumped and they are not as easily rotted as cotton and silk.
“We are making them in ridiculous amounts,” says Gabbott. “We stick them into landfills, which are like giant mummification tombs. It is already clear that much of modern fashion will end up being truly timeless.”
Fossils are not just objects left behind but also the traces of life’s activity written into the rocks. Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT. Given that similar molecules (分子) produced by bacteria have been found in rocks that are 1,600 million years old in Western Australia, these chemicals appear to be here to stay. “And there is the graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott. “It is lovable to think that it may be the drawings of children that may survive best of all: a pencil portrait, perhaps, of a family outside a house, with the sun shining and a rainbow arcing across the sky,” she says jokingly.
“The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s off the scale,” says Gabbott. All of the stuff made by humans by 1950 was a small part of all the matter on Earth. But today it outweighs all plants and animals. “This raises serious questions for us all,” she says, “Do you need that? Do you really need to buy more?”
8. What does the author think of the legacy mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Troubling. B. Short-lived.
C. Technologically weak. D. Environmentally harmless.
9. What can be categorized as techno fossils?
A. Dinosaur bones. B. Nuclear waste.
C. Cotton clothing. D. Solid landfills.
10 Why is “children’s drawings” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To highlight human creativity.
B. To celebrate modern technology.
C. To stress that warmth of life is here to stay.
D. To indicate that chemicals could be fossilized.
11. What does the underlined word “eye-watering” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. brain-crashing. B. jaw-dropping. C. tear-jerking. D. heart-sinking.
A 9. B 10. D 11. B
根据第一段“Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy. But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.(塑料和廉价衣物并非光彩照人的遗产。然而,一位科学家在探究我们科技文明中的哪些物品最有可能在数百万年后留存为化石时,却得出了一个颇具讽刺意味且发人深省的结论:塑料和快时尚(快速更迭的时尚潮流)将成为我们永恒的地质印记)”可知,作者认为塑料和廉价衣物并不是一个光荣的遗产,但它们却可能成为我们永恒的地质印记,这是一个具有讽刺意味的结论,因此可以推断出作者认为这个遗产是令人担忧的。 故选A。
根据第二段““Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘techno fossil’, because it is incredibly durable, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils.(莱斯特大学的化石专家莎拉·加博特表示:“塑料无疑将成为一种标志性的‘科技化石’,因为它具有极强的耐用性,我们正在大量生产这种材料,而且它已经遍布全球各地。”)”
根据第五段“Fossils are not just objects left behind, but also the traces of life’s activity written into the rocks.Human activities, such as oil drilling and nuclear tests, will leave lasting scars. Humankind has also created many near-indestructible chemicals, such as dioxins and DDT. Given that similar molecules (分子) produced by bacteria have been found in rocks that are 1,600 million years old in Western Australia, these chemicals appear to be here to stay. “And there is the graphite (石墨) used in pencils,” says Gabbott.(化石不仅仅是遗留下来的物体,它们还是生命活动在岩石中镌刻下的痕迹。
根据第六段““The big message here is that the amount of stuff we are now making is eye-watering — it’s off the scale,” says Gabbott.(加博特表示:“这里传达的关键信息是,我们如今制造的物品数量之多令人eye-watering——简直超乎想象。”)”
D
Many economists predict 2025 will be the time shoppers tighten their belts. That doesn’t mean people will stop spending, say retail analysts. But it will change what they choose to buy. With a slowing job market, global consumers are likely to move away from more high-priced purchases and focus instead on smaller, less expensive treats.
The economic uncertainty means that consumers are becoming more discriminating about their purchases, says Ethan Chernofsky, senior vice president of marketing at intelligence platform Placer. ai. “There are the things we decide are necessary, and then there’s another category of things that aren’t necessary but that we consider affordable luxuries,” he says. This desire for these “affordable luxuries” is common in difficult economic times. Some economists refer to the phenomenon as the “lipstick index”: a small economic increase led by budget-minded consumers seeking out relatively affordable splurges (挥霍), like small cosmetics (化妆品).
Analysts at Deloitte say consumers will spend on little luxuries like specialty coffees and snacks as well. Additionally, stressed-out shoppers are prioritizing small splurge purchases for wellness and personal care.
As retailers see shoppers turning to little luxuries, they’re offering more and more of them. Target, for example, has staked a flag in what they refer to as “affordable joy”, which includes a selection of self-care and cosmetic products, along with wellness-centric beauty products. Beyond diversifying their offerings, stores are also bringing in luxury-feeling products at lower price points to appeal to more consumers.
Ethan says not every shopper will shift their spending to little luxuries — but even those who are still longing for the “must-haves” of social media will also look to get a deal. They want the feeling of purchasing lower-priced affordable treats. To get these goods, shoppers are likely to tap into the re-sale market for designer items at a more reasonable price. They want things that make them feel good about themselves — they just want to do it without breaking the bank.
12. What can affordable luxuries be?
A. Stylish super cars. B. In-season vegetables.
C. High quality eye creams. D. Full-price brand handbags.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The joy businesses offer. B. The strategies retailers use.
C. The competition stores face. D. The products consumers buy.
14. What do most shoppers seek according to Ethan?
A. Social-media deals. B. World-famous brands.
C. Second-hand bargains. D. Budget-friendly pleasures.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Lipstick Index: Where Does It Lead Us?
B. affordable Joy: Will We Fall into The Trap?
C. Must-have Treats: A Future Spending Trend
D. Little Luxuries: A Driving Force Behind Consumption
C 13. B 14. D 15. D

根据第二段中“There are the things we decide are necessary, and then there’s another category of things that aren’t necessary but that we consider affordable luxuries,” he says. This desire for these “affordable luxuries” is common in difficult economic times. Some economists refer to the phenomenon as the “lipstick index”: a small economic increase led by budget-minded consumers seeking out relatively affordable splurges (挥霍), like small cosmetics (化妆品).(“有些东西我们认为是必要的,然后还有另一类东西,它们不是必要的,但我们认为是负担得起的奢侈品,”他说。
根据第四段“As retailers see shoppers turning to little luxuries, they’re offering more and more of them. Target, for example, has staked a flag in what they refer to as “affordable joy”, which includes a selection of self-care and cosmetic products, along with wellness-centric beauty products. Beyond diversifying their offerings, stores are also bringing in luxury-feeling products at lower price points to appeal to more consumers.(随着零售商看到购物者转向小奢侈品,他们提供了越来越多的小奢侈品。例如,塔吉特已经打出了一面旗帜,他们称之为“负担得起的快乐”,其中包括一系列自我护理和化妆品,以及以健康为中心的美容产品。除了使产品多样化之外,商店还以较低的价格引入感觉奢华的产品,以吸引更多的消费者)”可知,第四段主要讲了零售商使用的策略,即提供更多的小奢侈品,并以较低的价格引入感觉奢华的产品,以吸引消费者。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。 根据最后一段中“Ethan says not every shopper will shift their spending to little luxuries— but even those who are still longing for the “must-haves” of social media will also look to get a deal. They want the feeling of purchasing lower-priced affordable treats.(伊桑说,并不是每个购物者都会把他们的消费转向小奢侈品,但即使是那些仍然渴望社交媒体上的“必需品”的人也会寻求优惠。他们想要购买低价实惠商品的满足感)”可知,根据伊桑的说法,大多数购物者寻求的是经济实惠的乐趣,即购买低价实惠的商品。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。 根据第一段“Many economists predict 2025 will be the time shoppers tighten their belts. That doesn’t mean people will stop spending, say retail analysts. But it will change what they choose to buy. With a slowing job market, global consumers are likely to move away from more high-priced purchases and focus instead on smaller, less expensive treats.(许多经济学家预测,到2025年,消费者将开始勒紧裤腰带过日子。

To put into words my time in Antarctica and South Georgia is nearly impossible. I had always described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. ___16___ I was not the only one who felt this way. About 50% of the passengers of our expedition had been to Antarctica at least once before. This goes to show just how magical the destination is.
___17___ How tiny you feel next to towering glaciers and icebergs. The blinding white blankets everything, blurring the boundary between land and ocean. The icy water moves through your body as you take the Polar Plunge. The solemn silence calms your restlessness and reminds you of heart-touching stories of survival from explorers of the past. The list goes on.
Antarctica makes you feel so small and insignificant, in the best way. Everything has a purpose, and the cycle of life is evident. You get front row seats to witness the most incredible show: nature. ___18___ For example, when you see a brown skua (贼鸥) attacking a penguin chick, your heart aches. Then your expedition guide regretfully tells you that a chick that is small in March would have very slim chances of surviving the upcoming winter. ___19___
Things move fast here, every month offering something unique and special to see. In March, the weather is a bit more unpredictable, and the sea ice is beginning to form again. Our voyage was the last of the season. In two more weeks, expedition ships would not be able to break through the ice. The penguins are completing their yearly feather-changing process. They are really weak during this time, and cannot dive. ___20___
These animals, arguably the cutest you will ever see, survive such unfavorable environments. It’s absolutely incredible to witness the challenges, the skill, the efforts, all of it. I am forever grateful to have been a visitor.
A. But that is not how it is.
B. It is as much cruel as beautiful.
C. I, years later, did return to this fascinating place.
D. The cycle continues, and you’ re left wondering who to support.
E. That all your senses will be stimulated is the best way I can describe it.
F. But immediately I stepped foot on the continent, I knew I needed to return.
G. The expedition team made sure we kept our distance and did not scare them.
F 17. E 18. B 19. D 20. G

根据上文“I had always described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.(我一直把它描述为一个一生一次的经历。)”
根据下文“How tiny you feel next to towering glaciers and icebergs.(在高耸的冰川和冰山旁边,你感觉多么渺小)”和“The solemn silence calms your restlessness and reminds you of heart-touching stories of survival from explorers of the past.
根据上文“For example, when you see a brown skua (贼鸥) attacking a penguin chick, your heart aches. Then your expedition guide regretfully tells you that a chick that is small in March would have very slim chances of surviving the upcoming winter. (例如,当你看到一只棕色贼鸥攻击一只企鹅雏鸟时,你的心会痛。然后你的探险向导遗憾地告诉你,一只在三月出生的小企鹅在即将到来的冬天存活的机会非常渺茫。)”可知,自然是残酷的,其中有弱肉强食,经历着一次次生命循环,D选项“循环仍在继续,你不知道该为谁加油。”能够承接上文,描述自然生命的循环。故选D。
【20题详解】
根据上文“The penguins are completing their yearly feather-changing process. They are really weak during this time, and cannot dive. (企鹅正在完成一年一度的换羽过程。这段时间它们真的很虚弱,不能潜水。)”可知,企鹅在的换羽过程中很虚弱,G选项“探险队确保我们保持距离,没有吓到他们”能够承接上文,企鹅在的换羽过程中很虚弱,所以探险队确保保持距离,不要吓到它们。此处them与上文The penguins呼应。

The vocabulary of tea tasting can seem abstract to the point of poetry. When ____36____ (season) tea lovers comment on a cup of tea, they might comment on its qi and yun. In a 2021 paper, Zhang Jinghong notes that in Chinese culture, food and drink are not judged only by taste or smell. When ____37____ (cite) the ancient saying, “Medicine and food have the same origin”, she says that the impact of food and drink on the body remains ____38____ important factor in how Chinese perceive taste and quality. Just to name one example, common food descriptors like “hot” and “cold” do not describe specific temperatures, ____39____ how a dish is perceived to affect a person’s inner temperature.
Keeping that ____40____ mind, what exactly do tea lovers mean when they talk about qi and yun? Deng Shihai, an early expert on Pu’er tea, praised its “flavorless flavor” as the highest level Pu’er can attain. If that sounds needlessly contradictory, you’re not alone, but to Deng, it was a way to distinguish beginners at tea, ____41____ focus on taste, from experts who see tea more ____42____ (whole).
Qi and yun are thought to be more advanced than any simple description of taste, in part because they imply an indescribable sense of connection between people and things, and even to the far ____43____ (expand) natural world. As Zhang notes, “Qi and yun ____44____ (consider) to more accurately and thoroughly express what people feel when they are touched by things, and to better reflect the ____45____ (unit) of people and things, and people and nature.”
36. seasoned
37. citing 38. an
39. but 40. in
41. who 42. wholly
43. more expansive
44. are considered
45. unity

故填an。
故填but。
故填in。
故填who。
故填more expansive。
故填are considered。

An Unforgettable Experience of Labour
During the National Day holiday that had just finished, I spent one day participating in a local environmental clean-up initiative.
On that day, I joined a group of volunteers to pick up litter in the wetland park. Armed with gloves and trash bags, we spent hours collecting discarded bottles, cans, and plastic waste. It was a laborious task, but the sense of purpose was inspiring. As we cleaned, we also educated visitors about the importance of environmental conservation.
The experience was not only about physical labor but also a lesson about community spirit and personal responsibility. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing that my efforts, however small, contributed to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to
doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show, Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. His fluid movements combining strength and grace drew gasps of admiration. When he demonstrated a dragon-style sequence, the British students clapped enthusiastically. Sensing their genuine interest, Li Ming offered to teach basic stances. In return, they taught him popular dance steps, blending Eastern and Western elements into their performance. Gradually, Li Ming found himself laughing naturally during rehearsals. The cultural exchange dissolved his anxiety, replacing it with collaborative joy. By performance day, their routine had transformed into a vibrant fusion of martial arts and modern dance.
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Classmates greeted him warmly in corridors, asking about kung fu philosophies. In literature class, group members actively sought his interpretations, patiently listening to his accented English. At lunch breaks, students invited him to join conversations about cultural differences. The once-daunting school parties became opportunities to share Chinese pop songs. Most importantly, Li Ming stopped overthinking every interaction. He realized communication wasn’t about perfection, but sincere effort. Slowly, his initial adventure transformed into meaningful connections built on mutual curiosity and respect.

Plastic and cheap clothes are not a glorious legacy. But a scientist exploring which items from our technological civilization are most likely to survive for many millions of years as fossils (化石) has reached an ironic and instructive conclusion: Plastic and fast fashion will be our everlasting geological signature.
“Plastic will definitely be a signature ‘techno fossil’ because it is incredibly durable, we are making massive amounts of it, and it gets around the entire globe,” says Sarah Gabbott, a University of Leicester expert on fossils.
Fossils are not just objects left behind, but also the traces of life’s activity written into the rocks.
10. Why is “children’s drawings” mentioned in paragraph 5?

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
